http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/blog/eye-on-college-basketball/21917977/msu-fans-buying-south-dakota-state-gear-to-wear-during-michigan-game

There is a decent chance South Dakota State will appear to have more fans than Michigan in Auburn Hills come Thursday night.

How? Here's how.

Michigan and Michigan State share a pod site. Both are in Auburn Hills for the Thursday games. Michigan State gets Valpo in the afternoon, while Michigan gets No. 13 South Dakota State just after dinner.

So, in the spirit of rivalry and in a very creative effort to get as many Jackrabbits "fans" in the building as possible, Sparty faithful have taken out their wallets and purchased SDSU gear to be part-time Jackrabbits honks on the side. They are having it expressed-delivered to their houses. So despite the early tip for Tom Izzo's team, some MSU fans clearly plan on sticking around, changing their wardrobe and hollering like hell for Nate Wolters and Co. at the 7:15 tip.

Keloland.com with more:

In the downstairs shipping area, workers have been busy boxing up orders, getting ready to mail them out. "One of the interesting things is just where you see everything going. We track that and it's all over the country," Bookstore Marketing Coordinator Stephen Brua said. Brua says Internet traffic to the bookstore's website has doubled and some of those orders are from alumni now living in Michigan.

"We've had a couple of fans who want to make sure they get everything for Thursday, so what they're doing is paying $50 for overnight shipping just for some T-shirts," Brua said. "We've actually have had some people, Michigan State fans calling in," Brua said. "Michigan and Michigan State are playing in the same arena, so what the people are doing, buying some stuff so they can go to that game and cheer against Michigan."
The report states SDSU has quadrupled its merchandise sales as of late. It's going to be really interesting at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

When a lower-seeded team has a shot against a big boy, the arena normally will really move and sway and cheer for the upset. Now, MSU fans are taking that to a material level. Safe to say, South Dakota State will never have more fans at a game than Thursday. I love this story.

If Duke and UNC were both playing Rounds 2 and 3 in, say, Greensboro, and I went, and Duke played first and UNC played a flashy potential Cinderella team second, you're goddamn right I'd buy some Cinderella gear and suit up.

Nothing wrong with that.

(And I realize maybe this post is about how Michigan doesn't consider Michigan State its rival or something... but comparing relative successes in basketball over the last decade or so, I don't really know that that's a card that can be easily played... in the basketball world anyway.)

ended up going to Michigan. Still live in Ann Arbor.

I stand by what I said - actual Michigan alumn don't care about MSU anywhere near as much as MSU fans and alumn care about Michigan. And it goes far beyond sports. Most of the MSU alumn that I know HATE Michigan because they resent the fact that there are so many people in the state that didn't go to either school but root for Michigan. That's why I said "actual Michigan alumn." There are plenty of obnoxious Michigan fans that never went to Michigan that hate on State hard. But the actual Michigan students and alumn that I went to school with and work with daily view MSU as an annoyance because of their fans, but our rival is OSU.

MSU fans worry about Michigan way more than vice versa. We get up during rivalry week and talk a little trash, but outside of that, we don't think about MSU that much. MSU fans always worried about what Michigan is doing outside of rivalry week.

We may not show it the same way that OSU fans show their hate towards us (for example, a Michigan fan going to an OSU road game is gonna have a MUCH more rough trip than an OSU fan coming to Michigan for a road game.)

But yeah...eff OSU.

I've had MSU you fans try to argue passionately that they were a bigger rival to us than OSU and that makes absolutely no sense. Certain MSU radio hosts have made this same stupid argument when saying that The Game shouldn't be at the end of the season. The Michigan-OSU rivalry was not too long ago named the best in all sports, to try to make Michigan-MSU a bigger rivalry is just idiotic.

I was born in 79 and as long as I can remember the ND rivalry was second only to OSU. But with ND not wanting to join the Big Ten for all these years, and then them ending our series of playing each other every year, and the fact that there really isn't a ton of history in the rivalry pre 1978 when it started back besides the programs being the two with the most wins, it's at "whatever" status at this point to me.

i personally haven't witnessed anything all that bad. this past year it was just too fucking cold and early in the day to get into any major fights.

i think part of the discrepancy in feel for the visiting fans is that there are just a lot more OSU people attending AA games then the other way around. naturally you're gonna feel safer when traveling in a pack.

i think we'll see the game pushed back to 330pm and eventually some 8pm starts. a full day of drinking and shit talking could get a little messy, lol.

I didn't see any fights or anything like that. Just some hard trash talk. The trash talk in Columbus is a bit more explicit than what I've heard in Ann Arbor when OSU fans come through. The Ann Arbor trash talk is moreso jokes than anything that bad.

Good point. Another factor is I think the crowd at the Big House is way older than the crowd in Columbus, at least from the one game I saw there.

after the riots in 2002 i think they've progressively gotten a better handle on things and people have chilled out a bit and know to act at least somewhat humane. in 2013 there's just too much $$ wrapped up in OSU football and too much national exposure on the brand to let people act like animals.

and this falls under that umbrella.

I am being dead serious right now, I couldnt care less if state wins or loses in the tournament unless we were playing them.

Same it ohio the state, i have zero reason to openly cheer against them.

Im not cheerin FOR them but to make an effort to show support for another school is just lame imo.

Having said that, GO GAELS!!!!!!!!

Are you really taking shots at Michigan State in March?

This is not MD-Duke. MSU has dominated UM in basketball for a long time now.

These schools are in the same conference, the same division, have huge fan bases, and are an hour apart. Both have had recent success in fball and bball.

To say this is not a rivalry is disingenuous.

Will UM make it out the first round this year?

Nah, it was created by Mike Hart and adopted by UM fans.

True story: A couple months ago I was walking across the street to my car. My neighbor, a UM alumna, stopped her car in the middle of the street and yelled "HEY LITTLE BROTHER" at me. She has done this on more than one occasion.

fan brings up MSU it's usually to talk about something MSU is doing in reference to Michigan - in other words "look, MSU fans are making T shirts after beating us" or "MSU fans are upset that Trey Burke got player of the year honors" or like this post "MSU fans are buying our opponents gear so they can root against us."

You're very rarely gonna see someone that went to Michigan bringing up MSU in a non-Michigan context. Or hear about Michigan fans rooting hard against MSU in games that have nothing to do with Michigan. If there's a situation where an MSU win helps us in conference Michigan fans are gonna root for MSU with no questions - because it helps us. Flip it the other way around though? I see State fans root against Michigan ALL the time when it hurts MSU for Michigan to lose. I've even talked to some MSU fans that have specifically said that they enjoy seeing Michigan lose more than seeing MSU win.

It's clearly a rivalry, so don't get me wrong. But the HATE that MSU has for Michigan is pretty much one-sided. Has nothing to do with success and I am not trying to knock MSU at all. We just don't HATE you like you HATE us.

You're generalizing. I'm a MSU alum (surprise) and I am generally neutral when I watch UM. I have plenty of friends that went to MSU who are also neutral. I wish they would win in the tourney and in bowl games to raise the B10's profile.

Now football season is difficult because UM fans think that their team is God's gift to sports, and want to totally discount MSU's recent success. That arrogance carries over to bball season also.

It's also a pain in the ass arguing with fervent 'fans' that never went to UM.

No hate here. MSU fans, myself included, do get frustrated with arrogant, dismissive UM fans tho.

that I talk to are also frustrated with the same thing you mentioned - arrogant Michigan fans that never went to the school, and MOST State fans that I talk to absolutely hate Michigan because of it.

http://www.mlive.com/lansing-news/index.ssf/2013/03/michigan_state_spartan_statue.html

Michigan State Spartan statue defaced with Valparaiso gear hours before NCAA tournament game

EAST LANSING, MI -- Someone apparently wanted to start the NCAA tournament game between Michigan State and Valparaiso about 12 hours early.

Under the cover of darkness, an unknown person decorated Michigan State University's iconic Spartan statue in Valparaiso paraphernalia about 11 p.m. Wednesday night. A sign and basketball-themed hardhat both bearing the letters "VU" had been placed on the ceramic monument.

Jourdan and Garrison Rasmussen, a pair of brothers from Lakeview who attend MSU, removed the props from the statue and posted pictures to Twitter. They speculated that fans of the Spartans' arch-nemesis Michigan were responsible for the iconoclasm, perhaps in retaliation to Michigan State fans' support of the Wolverines' opening opponent in the NCAA tournament, South Dakota State.

The brothers did not find who was responsible, but Garrison Rasmussen, a 21-year-old junior majoring in English, said he spotted someone in a yellow shirt running away from the scene.

The pair took down the Valparaiso gear and kept it for themselves as souvenirs.

Jourdan Rasmussen, a 23-year-old student at the MSU College of Law, said after restoring the Spartan statue he's "never been prouder to be a Spartan."

Standing where Kalamazoo Street and Chestnut Road meet at the entrance to MSU's athletic neighborhood, the Spartan statue is a 10-foot-6 bronze statue mounted on a 5-foot-4 base. A popular attraction on campus, the posing Spartan warrior weighs three tons, and its current incarnation has been in place since 2005.

The first Spartan statue, which was the same effigy but made of terra cotta, was established in 1945. After 60 years, it had to be replaced due to ill effects of Michigan weather.

The original statue now stands inside a windowed vestibule on Spartan Stadium's west side.

The monument has long been the target of vandalism. Each year, members of the MSU Spartan Marching Band take turns protecting the statue during the week leading up to the Spartans' rivalry game with Michigan. The tradition has become known as "Sparty Watch."

and how they think they are "above" hating MSU...

Yet, every time I'm around UM fans and alum, they do nothing but talk shit about MSU before a game and get so upset whenever MSU beats them. God forbid UM wins and MSU loses in the same weekend - they don't shut up. But, no, no, no... they have no vested interest in MSU. My favorite is when MSU beats them - they go silent for a couple weeks. I loved working in Ann Arbor.

And I'll answer the questions ahead of time...

Lived in Warren, Clinton Township, Ypsilanti, East Lansing, Pontiac, and Howell. Worked in Ann Arbor. Went to MSU. Friends went to UM.

For fuck's sake - it's a rivalry. Guess what? You can have more than 1.

Gotta love the tired "Walmart Wolverine" insult. It must be news to a ton of fans of ohio, Notre Dame, USC, or virtually any other school with a major football or basketball program that they need to have actually attended the school to be allowed to root for them. It's not our fault that virtually nobody outside of your alumni base gives a shit about your sports programs. On the rare occasion that you come across a sparty fan that is neither a student or alumni, do you tell them to fuck off and only root for their own school? I highly doubt it. The only thing that should matter is that the person is a fan through thick and thin, and there are a ton of diehard Michigan fans who never attended the school.

And I am a Michigan grad, so don't even try to insinuate some hit dog bullshit.

In response to Reply # 0

http://www.mlive.com/lansing-news/index.ssf/2013/09/university_of_michigan_athleti.html

EAST LANSING -- University of Michigan athletics paid thousands of dollars for a skywriter to etch "Go Blue" in the skies over East Lansing before Michigan State kicked off against Youngstown State on Saturday.

Suzanne Asbury-Oliver, who runs Oregon Aero SkyDancer skywriting with her husband Steve, told MLive the Wolverines' athletic department hired her business to put Michigan slogans into the air above Ann Arbor then East Lansing on Saturday.

Michigan athletic department spokesperson Dave Ablauf acknowledged his department paid for Saturday's skywriting but said no specific locations were targeted.

"We hired the skywriters to canvas southeast Michigan with slogans and numbers prior to our game last Saturday,"he said in a statement. "There were no locations targeted."

Asbury-Oliver, who has been skywriting with her husband for 33 years, said it was the fourth time Michigan athletics has hired her business, but it was the first time U-M asked her to skywrite over East Lansing.

She declined to disclose the specific price she charged Michigan for the job and also declined to disclose with whom she dealt, although she acknowledged it was "œsomeone who works for the University of Michigan's athletic department."

"It's a multi-thousand-dollar job," Asbury-Oliver said. "First, it's $2 per mile for how far we have to take the plane, then the lightweight oil we use (to skywrite) is expensive, and we use about a gallon and a quart each letter. Then for these kinds of jobs you have to throw in hotels and all that."

Thousands of Michigan State fans looked skyward about 12:30 p.m. Saturday in East Lansing as Asbury-Oliver's skywriting apprentice, Nathan Hammond, spelled out over MSU's campus the phrase most loathed by Spartans. Hammond also skywrote over Ann Arbor on Saturday.

Asbury-Oliver said she noticed from media reports the uproar it caused among Spartan fans, although she had no premonition of that beforehand as she's not from Michigan and didn't understand the nature of the MSU-UM rivalry. Spartans athletic director Mark Hollis on Wednesday called the pro-Wolverines aerial calligraphy "an irritant."

"My husband and I, we're not sports fans. We didn't know what it all was about," said Asbury-Oliver, who lives in Tucson, Ariz.

RELATED: MSU AD says no apology necessary from U-M

MSU Alumni Association Executive Director Scott Westerman channeled Spartan fans' indignation, challenging them Saturday night to put money to a better use than goading a rival by donating it toward ovarian cancer awareness.

Westerman, who is a private pilot, estimated the cost of Saturday's skywriting at $3,000. He asked his fellow MSU alumni to match that amount in donations for ovarian cancer, a disease his wife, Colleen, has battled twice. He also challenged his counterparts at the U-M Alumni Association to equal what Michigan State raises.

Spartan fans and alumni responded emphatically, donating upward of $27,000 by Thursday afternoon, impressing even the enthusiastic Westerman in the process.

"This is taking on a life of its own, an outcome that I could never have hoped for," he said. "I'm feeling very proud to be a Spartan today."

Michigan's athletic department procured Asbury-Oliver's skywriting services months in advance, she said. She didn't think anything was out of the ordinary when the Michigan athletic department official asked for additional skywriting--specifically "Go Blue" near Spartan Stadium--in East Lansing this time.

"He gave me his wish list of what he wanted done," she said. "We just did what we were hired to do.

"He asked me not to say how much it cost if I got questions about it."

University of Michigan athletics is funded independent of university funds, meaning no tuition or taxpayer dollars support it. The department has multimillion-dollar surpluses regularly.

The Rose Bowl win, the insanely weird/inferiority-complex
laden skywriting fiasco, and the utter domination of UM
by MSU over the course of 5 years on the field actually make
the label more fitting for UM.

It's weird, I used to be really charged up about this rivalry, hate
on MSU, and bask in their "sparty no!" failures. But I thoroughly
enjoyed watching them win and get to celebrate a program-
defining Rose Bowl championship. Maybe I'm just getting old
and boring.
