Lakers center Dwight Howard shaping up after his slow start

By Mark Medina, Staff Writer
Posted: 03/09/2013 09:14:51 PM PST
Updated: 03/09/2013 10:47:43 PM PST

Too much frustration surrounding his injuries, a diminished role and heightened expectations clouded Dwight Howard's mind.

So he used the NBA All-Star break to reassess his goals.

He talked with Hall of Fame center Hakeem Olajuwon about his play. Howard teamed with strength and conditioning coach Tim DiFrancesco to accelerate his conditioning progress. The Lakers center sat by himself thinking about what he needed to change.

Howard enters today's game against the Chicago Bulls averaging 15.44 points on 55 percent shooting, 14.11 rebounds and 2.44 blocks per game.

Those numbers actually are a decrease to his similar average (16.2 points on 57.4 percent shooting, 12.9 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game). But Howard has shown improvement in his conditioning, defense and pick-and-roll execution.

His progress since the All-Star break three weeks ago starts with his diet. He's stripped away candy in favor of Whole Foods.

"All the sugar is bad for us," Howard said. "It causes us to get fatigued."

Howard said he changed his pregame preparation.

"You go home and, despite playing video games, I just thought about what we're trying to accomplish as a team," Howard said. "I really want to win a championship. That's the reason why I'm in L.A. Me and the trainers talked about ways I could get myself into better shape."

Howard revealed he's also shown more appreciation for Kobe Bryant's brutally honest feedback and devotion to his craft. Howard followed Bryant's advice to shoot 1,000 jumpers a day to assuage his fear of missing.
"He doesn't care about nothing but going out there and playing hard," Howard said. "I'm sure when he first got to L.A., that was something that really got to him. But he just got in the gym and worked at it."

Despite these changes, Howard said he kept the same personality.

"The stuff we go through in life isn't always going to be peaches and cream," Howard said. "But we have to learn from it."

Also

The Lakers assigned seldom-used reserves Darius Morris and Robert Sacre to the D-Fenders, their development league affiliate.

Bynum's up in some halfway house bathtub straight outta 'The Reader' getting strychnine-and-sulphuric-acid cocktails injected into each knee, Sixers called for the transcript later & German authorities said they have no knowledge or record of him ever being there.

i know it's been a rough time for him and with the possibility of not even making it out of the 1st round when we do make the playoffs, he could question whether he can actually win a ring here...but we'll do pretty much anything to get him to stay, and that includes handing D'Antoni his pink slip. plus we got a skilled 7 foot trade chip who's 19 mil off the books in 2014.

just too many factors in our favor, the fact that financially it's in his best interest to stay since we can offer him more dough than any other team, not to mention all the off the court Hollywood endorsement money, the fact that the one team he reportedly wanted to play for above all others can no longer afford him, also his chick is out here, i met her when she performed at the poetry lounge in hollywood and dwight came to see her, LA born and bred + aspiring singer/actress = that bitch ain't tryna leave, and obviously the weather and beaches aren't half bad either.

I think he finally realized the magnitude of playing for the Lakers through seeing the reaction to Dr. Buss's death and seeing all the history/players/coaches gathered together.

I'm not buying this...I mean, I'm glad Kobe is passing more...And even a cat like me who has little use for dude can more than admit that he's been GREAT in terms of his all around game...

But Howard was putting up crazy numbers with a shoot-first-ask-questions-later PG in Orlando...

Let's slow down...

He's never put up anything resembling "crazy" numbers offensively, especially considering the lack of credible opposition at his position. If anything, a shoot first point guard could account for him putting up god offensive numbers and not stellar ones, but when you look at how limited he is in the post in comparison to true greats at his position, you see things more clearly.

Plus... I've got no clue who this shoot first point guard you're talking about is, because he's never had one. You can't be talking about Jameer, because he's never been a gunner of note and shoots at a decent clip.

You can't be talking about Gil either, because he barely played.

If only all defensive centers could average nearly 23 points a game one season and 20 in 3 other seasons...Yeah...we all know dude has one go to move...

But chill with acting like Kobe has made him into a new center (we all know that D. Howard playing that good cop role....)

Of course that's not to discount what Bean has been doing on the court...Like I said, his all around game and shooting percentage has been pretty sick...Hell EPIC at times....He's shutting a lot of people up, including me...

But Howard is putting 16 and at times grabbing 19 plus rebounds with a bad back and crappy shoulder...

Just saying...

However, there are numerous cats who tried to attribute Dwight's early struggles to Kobe...so for those dudes, FOH, can't have it both ways.

things would be a whole lot diferent.

him and Kobe are playing a good role, though they gotta do a whole lot to just be average and to me with the expectations in La La land is a bad joke.

nobody will ever take away from Kobe being a Great player, however it ain't like he is allowing Dwight to just do his thing. and Nash ain't the answer for Dwight nor Pringles.

how he came to LA not wanting to talk to anybody. Just putting up a wall. Personally, I felt that more than anything was what was affecting the chemistry of the team. I feel like he came into this situation automatically assuming he and Kobe would but heads based on personalities. Plus the whole Shaq thing. I'm glad he got off that bullshit. I think Mitch going all in in the media helped too.

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- It was four days in a season that at times has felt four years long. But amid the festivities of All-Star weekend in Houston last month, Dwight Howard says he found time to make some very important changes.

"I'm a big thinker," Howard said during a wide-ranging, candid interview after the Los Angeles Lakers practiced Saturday afternoon. "So I just stayed in the hotel and thought about the first half of the season and how I could do better for our team.

But you look at a guy like Kobe and he doesn't care about nothing but going out there and playing hard. That's a lesson a lot of us have to learn -- especially young guys.

"And I just told myself, 'I'm going to commit myself to being better for the second half of the season.' "

That meant cutting sugar completely out of his diet so he could get into the kind of shape he needed to be in to be the Lakers' defensive anchor and run coach Mike D'Antoni's pick-and-roll sets.

That meant acknowledging that he was trying to be somebody he wasn't the first half of the season.

And, yes, it meant admitting to himself that playing alongside the hard-driving Kobe Bryant was something that he needed both personally and professionally.

"It's going to make me a better man and a better player from watching Kobe," Howard said.

Playing in Los Angeles, for a franchise with expectations as high as the Lakers, is "a lot different," Howard said.

"Besides just the expectations," he said. "In games, I mess up and there's somebody in the crowd saying something and I'm ready to snap at 'em. That's not what we're supposed to do.

"But you look at a guy like Kobe and he doesn't care about nothing but going out there and playing hard. That's a lesson a lot of us have to learn -- especially young guys."

Howard said he and Bryant always have had a good relationship, but it's deepened this season, particularly since the All-Star break.

"I told him : 'I'm afraid to miss. When I get out there, I don't want to miss, and I end up missing.' And he was like: 'You know what? Shoot 1,000 jumpshots a day. You're going to miss a lot of those shots. But that's OK. Because you're teaching yourself it's OK to miss.'

"Now I see it. He gets out there and he might miss a couple 3s, but then he'll make nine in a row. You see that and it just kind of gives you more inspiration."

Howard and Bryant are coming off their best two games as Lakers, with the latter becoming the first Laker since Jerry West in 1970 to post back-to-back 40-point, 10-assist games in wins against New Orleans and Toronto, respectively. Howard has dominated defensively while averaging 22 points, 14 rebounds and 4.5 blocks.

In nine games since the All-Star break, Howard is averaging 15.4 points, 14.1 rebounds and 2.4 blocks a game. Moreover, his energy and attitude seem markedly different.

"He jumped three or four times after one ball," D'Antoni said of Howard's defensive performance Friday night, when he blocked five shots and intimidated several Raptors. "His conditioning didn't allow him to do that .

"I think he was harshly judged because he wasn't 100 percent. There's all kind of little factors, but the further away he gets away from the operation, the better he will be."

Whatever the case, Los Angeles (32-31) will take it. With Utah's loss Saturday night to the Knicks, the Lakers are now tied with the Jazz for the eighth and final Western Conference playoff berth.

"When I first , I wanted to come here and not talk to anybody and act completely different," Howard said. "But that's not who I am. I've never been that way. I shouldn't ever shut myself off to the world. I don't think that's good for the team or for me and what I want to accomplish in life.

"I thought about it and said, 'No, I can't change. I've got to mature in certain areas,' and I think I have. But I can't change who I am."

When did that change take place?

"At the All-Star break," Howard said. "I just thought about what we're trying to accomplish as a team and I really want to win a championship. That's the reason why I'm in LA."

Granted they are trending upward, but even still as it stands they're clinging to a frail spot as the 8 seed in the West...
