Mar 05th 2013
3
Kobe is not better than Bird, get the entire fuck outta here.
Mar 05th 2013
4
lol my nigga you are all over the board when it comes to Kobe
Mar 05th 2013
14
Those are two different statements. He could be goat scorer and
Mar 05th 2013
20
I think Kobe's offensive repertoire is better
Mar 05th 2013
24
soooooo you're basically saying Kobe's better on offense and defense
Mar 05th 2013
53
yeah, Kobe is prolly the most skilled scorer we'll ever see
Mar 05th 2013
130
his skill set has nothing over mike's
Mar 05th 2013
132
man, i despise both those dudes, but Kobe is a scoring machine
Mar 06th 2013

                yeah, dude...

Mar 05th 2013
37

Mar 05th 2013
40
      History is fundamental
Mar 05th 2013
44
More shots went up, but more also went in
Mar 05th 2013
41
what are you going to believe, his eyes or your fancy number tricks?
Mar 05th 2013
I'm not arguing he wasn't a better rebounder
Mar 05th 2013
56
the number of add'l rebs to be had is not statistically significant
Mar 05th 2013
58
there are more rebounds to be had. he's a 3 and 6'9". it matters
Mar 05th 2013
62
but he was an elite rebounder by any measure so i just dont get it
Mar 05th 2013
67
first of all, I brought up rebounding to put in Birds' plusses over Kobe
Mar 05th 2013
85
and then turned around and tried to de-legitimize it 2 sec later
Mar 05th 2013
87
nuance is not delegitimizing.. It's providing some perspective
Mar 05th 2013
92
so he's getting dinged now for being tall?!?!
Mar 05th 2013
95
WTF? Is there anything in this post where I said Kobe was a comparable
Mar 05th 2013
99
let me be more specific with the numbers, instead of league averages
Mar 05th 2013
101
Kosher..please read my original post about the rebounds
Mar 05th 2013
106
Bird is the best rebounding small forward since the merger
Mar 05th 2013
80
Kobe is, if not the best, one of the best pure scorers ever...
Mar 05th 2013
88
must be why he has a whole 1.2 ppg more than bird
Mar 05th 2013
90
                     huh?
Mar 05th 2013
                          take those seasons away and...
Mar 05th 2013
97
*sigh* does this shit upset you so much that you can't read?
Mar 05th 2013

148
RE: well, if you had left it at that without taking shots at bird
Mar 06th 2013
170
yeah and bird played 3 seasons with spine problems
Mar 05th 2013
102
huh? I'm just pointing out Bird's rebounding is more than just a result ...
Mar 05th 2013
94
I don't disagree with you. But his position and height matter when
Mar 05th 2013
96
so does the amt of time Kobe has the ball play into his assisting?
Mar 05th 2013
98
Why are you guys talking about his assists? I've given Bird the edge
Mar 05th 2013
103
so what does kobe do better? lol
Mar 05th 2013
107
score, defend, win, and play at a higher level for a much longer
Mar 05th 2013
113
lol...false, false, false, true...1/4 isnt bad
Mar 05th 2013
116
Oh I agree. But Bird was an elite rebounder even for his position/era
Mar 05th 2013
118
                                    fair enough nm
Mar 05th 2013
123
I'd take Bird by a centimeter, eh, honestly it's a toss up
Mar 06th 2013

Mar 05th 2013

Mar 05th 2013
9
      so whats your point bro?
Mar 05th 2013
10
are you making an argument for Bird being a better defender than
Mar 05th 2013
38
u said "ignore his defense" as though it brings his overall game down
Mar 05th 2013
42
ur arguing with a lakers fan. it ain't worth it
Mar 05th 2013
50
not true. I love Bird. I think Kobe is better. Not by much. But better
Mar 05th 2013
63
I said "ignore his defense" because Kobe is a better defender
Mar 05th 2013
54
he was at some point, but thats simply not true in 2013.
Mar 05th 2013
55
I've made my point. I believe Kobe is better. I'm still trying to figure

Mar 05th 2013
120

Mar 05th 2013

Mar 05th 2013
93
so why not measure that in....achievements?
Mar 05th 2013
104
because it's a team sport? because the best player doesn't always win?
Mar 05th 2013
112

Like, not even close really.

Bird shot better. Bird passed better. Better player.

Kobe just gunned more. That's it.

but Bird is better overall and its not even close? did we not watch Kobe lead his team to back to back championships with softest and mentally fragile sidekicks in league history?

him, magic, MJ, & Kareem are the only cats to have 5+ rings and 2+ finals mvps. i'd say him and Bird is a push.

Kobe defended better. like WAAAAAAAAY better. like even at this stage of his career where he's ball watching ALOT. He is still better defensively than Bird ever was. Bird shot better, passed better and rebounded more as a 6'9" forward in an era where more total shots went up and less shots from behind the arc were taken.

>Kobe just gunned more. That's it.

*shrugs* His style of play may not be the most desirable. But the career result speaks for itself.

2010-11 (last completed full season): NBA Average of 6660 FGA .459 FG% 3394 rebounds

1986-87 (random season from Bird's Era): NBA Average of 7281 FGA .480 FG% 3610 rebounds

the difference in average team rebounds is 216, which is only 2.6 more per TEAM per game, which is pretty negligible when spread out across a team's rotation. Bird was just a better rebounder.

Bird just by position and size should have been a better rebounder. Add to the fact that those stats show that there were more rebounds to be had, I'm not sure where there is a disagreement here. What Bird extremely extraordinary for his position was shoot and pass. He rebounded extremely well. But it's not something that should be shocking considering his position and era. That was my only point.

cool. He wouldn't be an elite rebounder at 6'5" or 6'6" playing mostly on the perimeter. period. There is nothing that will convince me otherwise.

rebounder to Bird? I'm merely saying it's an odd attribute to use when comparing the two. That's it. It would be like using Ray Allen's ability to shoot 3s in comparing who was the better player between him and Patrick Ewing.

Kobe's best rebounding season ever was 2002-03, at 6.9

that year, the Lakers as a team got 3632 rebounds, 4th best in the league.

Lakers shot .451 and their opponents shot .443, providing a combined 7514 missed shots. Kobe played in all 82 games, grabbing 15.5% of the team's boards per game.

Bird's WORST rebounding season was 90-91 when he got 8.5 (I'm not counting the year he played in 6 games)

that year, the Celtics as a team got 3785 rebounds, 3rd best in the league (153 more than the 02-03 lakers, or less than 2 per game).

The C's shot .512(!!!) and their opponents shot .452, providing 7659 missed shots. The difference of 145 missed shots is about 1.5 more per game, which is negligible. Bird played in 60 games, grabbing 18.4% of the team's boards per game. and that was his WORST rebounding year, compared to Kobe's BEST.

make ppg into a per minute, and kobe's got all of a 2 points per 36 better rate of scoring. bird's TS% and eFG% are better than kobe's. but not as pure. he's only 98% pure. kobe's 100% pure.

>per 36 better rate of scoring. bird's TS% and eFG% are better
>than kobe's. but not as pure. he's only 98% pure. kobe's 100%
>pure.

lol @ how you frame this...it's "all of a 2 points per 36" for kobe. But the difference in TS% and eFG% are .009% and .026%. Is this how it's going to go Jersey? Let's just agree to disagree and end it here. Ultimately, the only way to argue Bird is hands down better than Kobe or vice versa, one would have to ignore the plus and inflate the minuses of the other. I think Kobe's better. You think Bird is better. Let's leave it at that.

see, you said Kobe was better there, and I don't think he's better. so yeah, that his TS and eFG are lower *matters* (over a career, btw, those small differences are statistically significant) and that his scoring is slightly higher matters, but in the end its a wash.

but you're the one who claimed Kobe was a much better scorer.

Wait those small statistical differences over a career are significant. But the league shot attempts during their respective careers aren't? lol ok

>but you're the one who claimed Kobe was a much better scorer.

no. I said he was a better pure scorer. I think his arsenal is superior to Birds. That's not taking shots at Bird. That said, I will admit to being overly critical of his defense. I think Kobe is better. But you're reading more into my opinion than there is. I love Bird. I think Kobe was better. That's what I said in my initial post. Everyone else came with the hyperbolic shit in response. So I replied in kind.

You get a guy who facilitated more and was more money late in games with Bird. You get a better defensive player with Kobe who could score like crazy as well. I think Bird might work better on more rosters than Kobe, but on a good team either guy would put your ass in business.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

kobe has NEVER had a season where he racked up as many win shares as Larry did in any of his first 8 seasons

the fact of the matter is that Larry has 59 defensive win shares in 897 games and a career DRTG of 101

kobe has 48.8 in 1221 and a career DRTG of 105

larry contributed more to winning basketball games with his defense than kobe did. sorry.

While we were busying wearing clocks around our necks
and wearing funny hats, he was busy being better than
Magic Johnson

Yup

I credit progress we've made as a race to the mad making
engineered by god and Larry Bird

We needed him

Black kids in inner cities aren't working on their games
if they aren't flustered and mad from watching Larry Bird
routinely frustrate long-armed, athletic Africans

See, y'all think these Johnny Manziel-types are the best
white athletes

Nah...Manziel look up to Jeter and Cam..he is black, teaches
our race nothing about working hard

I've been saying it for five years: I need my white athletes
to keep us working hard on our craft

In response to Reply # 33

Magic could play at least 4 positions, well, and was prolly the best PG ever, but still dropped 42 as a rookie in a finals game seven that he started as a center.

As a rookie.

Bird ain't ever doing anything like that.

In response to Reply # 114

Strange, because that's probably the best game of Magic's
CAREER and it actually plagued him for several years after.
He was so mediocre in crunch time that he was labeled
"Tragic Johnson."

Weird. Literally every single Magic argument starts with
that game. One of the best performances ever, btw.

But it hardly makes him better than Larry Bird.

Oh, and Larry Bird was not a 2, like, ever.

He rebounded and was tall enough to defend 4s.

But he was a true 3.

In response to Reply # 120

I watched a lot of those games, and while he could bang around in the paint, he wasn't a str8 up 80s style PF. Wasn't strong/explosive/goon enough to do it. His game was str8 up 3, but he spent a lot of time extending defenses with his J, like a good 2, with some sneaky-ass drives. So while he wasn't a 2, he got more traction doing SG work than PF work.

Magic could do both, though.

That rookie game is always brought up because it shows what Magic was capable of doing.

Larry ain't seeing Magic, man.

Like, at all.

And Bird oould bang with 4s when he had to, which
is why he was consistently bitching NBA 4s on the
glass.

But he was a 3.

Yes, Bird was.

But Lebron not better.

Bird is the first athlete ever to suffer from stupid reverse-racism
as a response to stupid forward racism

White guilt and niggas being mad has magically made us forget
that he was better than Magic at their respective primes, one
of the 10 best pure passers ever (any position and far and away
the best passing forward ever) and probably the best
rebounding small forward ever.

Lebron is on his heels, though.

But this slam dunk "Lebron better than Bird" shit is
meh.

Yeah I know. Like I said Bird was the best forward in NBA history. And Lebron right now is better than he was. That's not a knock against Bird. Bron's just that good.

I'm kinda mad about it actually cuz last year I was gonna make a Bird >>> Bron post to make the Bronwagon-hopping Iverstans mad, but I can't make that post anymore cuz it just wouldn't hold up. oh well, should've done it when I had the chance.

is because you rarely see him in the public eye these days. McHale when he worked for NBA TV and TNT, Jordan to an extent, Isiah Thomas, Bill Russell, Hakeem to an extent, Dominique to an extent, and of course Magic and Charles Barkley you see on TV so that current basketball fans can at least put a face to the name. Bird who what I gather unless I'm wrong you rarely see on TV or hear him say anything.

Current fans are going to find it easier to remember the greats that pop up on TV these days and will more than likely forget those that aren't in the public eye on a regular basis. I'm curious if Bird cares that current fans will forget his contributions to a large extent.

Bird: 3x champ, 2x Finals MVP, 3x MVP, 12x All Star, 9x 1st Team, 1x 2nd Team, 3x 2nd Defensive Team, ROTY, 1x All Star MVP

Bron: 1x champ, 1x Finals MVP, 3x MVP (4x this year), 9x All Star, 6x 1st Team, 2x 2nd Team, 4x 1st Defensive Team, 2x 2nd Defensive Team, ROTY, 2x All Star MVP

He's still in his prime for at least another 3 years I'd say...seems like he's primed to take over Bird's place in the best SF spot.

at the age of 28...BRON
total career...BRON

all Bird did better was rebound and he didn't play in an era dominated by the SF

Bird was a PF that played SF because they had McHale and as good as he was, Bron is not even at his prime...scary

Bernard King...Alex English...Dr. J...were all shorter and Bird had an advantage.

I watched Bird and though he was a GREAT!
Bron better.

He's 28, and will win his 4th MVP in 5 years. when do you think his prime is coming? he may do more winning from here on out, but THIS is his prime.

we wouldn't even be having this discussion.

People forget that even after having MAJOR back issues that would have knocked lesser players out of the league, Bird hung in there and was still considered an elite player.

I think Bron is a unique specimen and combination of skills...

But Bird did ALL of that and then some w/o being a physically dominating presence.

Bird couldn't guard ME and I'm no-where near NBA or NJ YMCA talent.

Stop it fam!

Bird is an immortal but don't dismiss LBJ because he's only 28. Been in the league 10 yrs and dominated from day 1 as well.

Check the Jack McCallum column from CNNSI just yesterday:

He's a Bird fanatic, but it is what it is.

averaged 21/6/5 as a rookie
year 2 averaged 27/7/7 ... youngest all-nba player ever @ 20
year 3 averaged 31/7/7 ... youngest to average 30per ever
made playoffs, recorded trip-dub in 1st playoff game (32/11/11)
year 4 averaged 27/7/6 and led team to NBA finals at age 22

Yep, dominated from year 1 is correct.

No snark to you personally cuz i'm a Lebron guy. I think the fact that Bird averaged 10 rebs his career (along with his stroke) is what separates him from Lebron, considering how less athletic he was in his prime compared to LBJ.

Lebron's 30/8/7 is AMAZING tho...

Bird would eat lebron up in the post all day long, all game long, and all season long. It wouldn't even be close

His offensive abilities were just too superior, and would be too astronomical for lebron to handle

MJ , the greatest player to ever play in the universe, couldn't do shit against larry in the post....SHIT

bird played with dennis johnson, mchale, robbert parrish, cedric maxwell, tiny, bill walton all key parts.

ML carr and chris ford were better than anything than what lebron had on the bench when he was with the cavs.

playing with D Wade makes a teammate issue a liyyle bit closer and then bosh.

however bird would get clowned messing with Bron.

Bron would be badd in any era.

the only thing bird did better than bron was shoot, other than that bron got him beat with less overall.

believe me bird wouldn't take no pookie snow to the finals.

It's not like LeBron's fans are constantly going around saying he is better then Bird. You started this stupid ass thread. It's a ridiculous comparison anyway, basketball in 1984 =/= 2013, comparing stats and video isn't logical. LeBron is DOMINANT from 2007-2013. Bird was DOMINANT in 1980-88/89. Though I'd argue Birds status as the best during that period is more questionable then LeBrons is.

vs. the best guy we're watching right now. this happens all the time. we're getting excited cause we get to watch one of the greats in the making so we start making early comparisons. those are almost always hasty. when his career is over it'll probably be better than bird's, i'm sure of it. just relax and don't jump the gun on stupid shit like this, guys. he'll get there.

people are doing both. and it doesn't make much sense to compare career achievements if one guy's career isn't over yet.

The OP says...

From a standpoint considering career achievement, numbers, and skillset... Lebron is not better than Bird, YET. Let another 5 years or so play out...but today he hasnt reached that level yet.

If Lebron James died today (God forbid)...his career was not greater than Larry Bird's

mainly because he plays good defense in spots. Always has. Of course hhe "can" play great defense at times but he's never been totally committed to defense as dudes make it seem, and even on a secondary level he's never played the passing lanes as well as he should for someone of his skillset. Just sayin.

He could score at will, if he didn't play on balanced teams with tons of low post talent he could have scored 35 per game, his passing and basketball IQ were off the charts. His defense was that old man, bait you into doing some dumb shit style sneaky defense. Shooting 40 percent from three when it was brand new to the game and NO ONE shot 40 who took a sizable amount of attempts

prove your assertion that Lebron isn't better than Bird

In terms of overall skills, Lebron, because of his defense and ability to guard multiple positions, has the edge...plus the fact Lebron is a much better ball handler which allows him to create his own shot, something Bird lacked in his offensive game (precisely why Bob Ryan and other sportswriters who've covered the Celtics over the years, says Paul Pierce is the *purist* scorer in Celtics history)

Bird was the better rebounder of the two and was the better outside shooter also

but

this comparison shouldn't just rest on evaluating/debating the parts of both player's respective skillset

but

according to the sum of their parts...and when I personally take into account Lebron's game on the offensive and defensive side of the ball, his ability to play the 1, 2,3, or the 4 and just as equally be able to guard those same positions on defense - not to mention Lebron's unparalleled athleticism, I'd have to say Lebron is the better ball player of the two.

And two quick misguided claims brought up in this post that needs correcting: 1) Bird wasn't decidedly better than Magic in their primes, if anything, it was a push in most circles. 2) KOBE IS NOT A BETTER BASKETBALL PLAYER THAN LARRY BIRD, PERIOD! Anyone who speaks such non sense should be ignored in any basketball related discussions.

This coming from the guy who just uttered this nonsense:

First off, youngin, I already know you ain't even see Bird play, not one time, except for some spliced together YouTube videos lol

but

I'mma gon head and give you a brief history lesson anyway so take notes. Small forwards or perimeter players in generally weren't great ball handlers during the Bird era like the perimeter players of today. Here's a few of the elite small forwards during Bird's playing days:
-Dr.J...wasn't that great dribbling w/his left, average ball handler at best
-Nique...was NEVER a strength of his
-Worthy...not a very good ball handler, just as bad if not worse than Nique
-King...got most of his points off post ups, didn't create off the dribble
-Dantley...also played near the basket and didn't create offense off the dribble

These are but a few small forwards that played against Bird in the 80s and just like Bird, they were all average (to poor) ball handlers at best.

Lebron, Durant, Paul George, Melo, Pierce are all much better ball handlers than the small forwards in Bird's era. So back to my point: Bird's game didn't revolve around creating offense on isolation plays which is almost a must to have in today's game as a perimeter player and something as far as I'm concerned gives Lebron an advantage over Bird when it comes to scoring.

lol and that wouldn't give Kobe the GOAT shot creator/maker the advantage?

As a *scorer*, yes, but NOT as a BETTER ALL AROUND BASKETBALL PLAYER. Bird was a better, more efficient shooter (I know Bean stans try and dismiss the importance of efficiency when it comes to shooting but it does matter), better rebounder, better passer, played smarter basketball, and was equally as clutch if not more so. It would be much easier to play with and build a team around Bird than Kobe. Bird, unlike Bean, didn't need to dominate the ball in order to have an impact on a game. (precisely why Nash has been reduced to a spot up shooter playing alongside Bean)

I hope you playin or trying to be snarky or sumpin cuz Bird wasn't even close to being a better ball handler than Lebron...see, when you say untrue things like this and/or when other posters say things like Kobe was better than Bird, it just lets me know ya'll reeeeeally didn't see him play besides maybe a few gms on espn classic or watching a 3 minute YouTube video of Bird's highlights.

Bird wasn't even a better ball handler than Pierce. Fact.

brons handle is very "unrefined" to say the least. bird didn't handle as much as bron does, and never had to bring the ball up or run an offense like bron but he had a more fluid handle than bron.

Because Lebron isn't CP3 or Kyrie Irving when it comes to his handles doesn't mean he isn't a good ball handler and/or that he's not a better ball handler than Bird because he was, not even close -- and spare me pulling up a random YouTube video when I actually watch Lebron dribble/facilitate his team's offense in real time...Bird's handles were in no way good enough to bring the ball up court and facilitate his team's offense or create his own shot off the dribble...something Lebron has been doing since day 1 in the league.

Bird won 3 straight MVPs in the middle of their primes before Magic won his first.
