"Rousey v. Carmouche"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7QEoSpOdHGA

Dare i say that this is more intriguing than the recent
string of men UFC/MMA events.

Rousey with 6 pro-fights - all ending in an arm-bar before the 1st round concluded.

These ladies can fight.

I'm intrigued.

We do know that if you slip up an inch, or a second, she will pull an arm bar outta her ass.
So while ole girl may be "nice with these" it won't mean shit if she slips for two seconds.

>We know she will arm bar the shit out of you, quickly.

that means she effectively fights her fight. Wlad Klitschko
can control a 12-round fight on the outside with a jab and straight right-hand -
does that mean we don't know if he can fight?

If Rousey can end fights within a round, that certainly shows us
that she can indeed - fight. Perhaps you want to see her
tested - as do I. But homegirl can fight.

but the fact that she's ending fights so quickly is legitimate - you
can't just gloss over it as irrelevant.

It's like saying Tyson's ascent was wack when he was mowing down
MFs because we "don't know if he can really fight"

that Cyborg fight wasn't as one-sided as you might remember it. She did get demolished, but remember the fight almost went the full five minutes of the first round. There was even a portion of that fight when she had top control and actually let Cyborg get up from the bottom position willingly.

What happens if Rousey is push past the first round? Will Carmouche come out with the upset? Also the UFC primetime promo was amazing. I can't wait till saturday.

women's mma is so soft outside of maybe 5 fighters. 1 who is now acting and the other is serving a suspension. Rousey has never shown she can do anything besides slap an armbar on someone. She has never had to though. But she is so much more experienced on the ground than her opponents. There are very few woman who are in the sport now that have been doing this or any kind of martial art for longer than 5 years. So when you have Rousey who is a former Olympian competing with them its just unfair.

He was able to beast and then when talent came around and he actual fought someone of note it was all over. There just isn't that much talent.......YET. I said it wasn't great but a tiny parallel.

This weekend reminds me of how Strikeforce put all their eggs in Kimbo on CBS and then that happened. UFC is banking on Rousey so much that the women's division may not be able to handle a loss by her on Sunday.

And I would like to be clear, I am not anti woman or anti Rousey, I am just simply stepping the brake on the instaelevation she, and that division of the sport is getting.

They did a great job with the build up for this weekend, I hope it goes great for everyone involved.

Well - Rousey has pedigree within the sport - whereas Kimbo was mainly
a street-fighter they tried to mold into the octagon, and it failed miserably.
Kimbo was probably better equipped for boxing as the strength of his
martial artistry lies in his hand-speed and combination punching prowess. It
didn't help that he was seemingly badly out of shape. To me, Rousey is much
better prepared for this big stage. Also, it's going to be difficult for women's MMA (or
boxing for that matter) to have sustainable power beyond an anomalous figure
that captures the public's attention. Rousey's ascent reminds me a bit of Laila Ali
in that it's trying to generate mass appeal for an emerging women's sport with one
transcendant figure. Tough to do, indeed.

As am I. I just think it's a positive for the sport, and for society
as a whole.

because you are now interested in it. Even though you have been anti MMA. Constantly bashing the sport. But the moment woman are put into the mix you want to see whats going on. Forget that you can see better skilled fighters now. Nope you are jumping on for the woman fights. I dont see it lasting long.

I'm simply not as big of a fan of MMA as I am boxing, and don't
think its actual product is as dynamic (even if it's marketing
is superior).

That said, I tune into MMA -- I only get at MMA stans who
show no respect for the sweet science and stunt with
keyboard bravado. You seem to fit the bill on that.

you say that now but I know you have created countless posts putting MMA against Boxing. Always talking about how its a fad and boxing will always win.

>

you were the one that always showed no respect. I am the exact opposite of that. I have deep roots in boxing. I grew up in boxing gyms. My dad fought in golden gloves. All of my uncles fought in golden gloves. My cousin is in the boxing hall of fame and owned 2 gyms. I got tired of the politics and the crappy product that was been put out recently. I have never shit on boxing. I still watch fights on occasion. I have only shit on people that knock MMA saying boxing is superior when the two are completely different sports.

and on evading the question. Its unfair because she is a judo Olympian. She has been competing and practicing submissions since she was in grade school. 95% of these other woman have been involved with the sport for 5 years maybe. Submissions are easily the most difficult part of the game to learn. It actually reminds me of the youth BJJ tournaments. There is always 1 or 2 kids in each division that is head and shoulders above the competition. They usually win every single match with the same move. Usually arm bar. You see these 7 year olds throwing up flying arm bars in the opening minute and catching them every time. But the minute they meet up with that other kid they look just as sloppy as the 4 or 5 other kids they beat.

gross mischaracterization - but somehow I'm not surprised.

yet you're nowhere to be found in boxing posts. Interesting familial history within the sport, though.

but she "can't fight?" That's what I was responding to -- that is, your assertion that despite her pedigree and ability to master early submissions - that she can't fight. Fair assessment?

95% of these other woman have

That could happen with Rousey --- but of what I've seen of her training, she seems fairly competent on her feet. It's not as if she's fighting master pugilists -- she just needs to be adequate in certain aspects, not great. The pool of female fighters is small and hopefully she'll be tested to where she's forced to showcase some other skill-sets --- but if nobody can take her out of her game, she can't be penalized for that.

you miss the part where I said I was tired of boxings politics and product. Everyone in my immediate family has moved on to MMA. My cousin trains MMA. My dad doesnt watch boxing anymore. Me or any of my brothers really follow like we used to. I dont even think my uncles follow boxing either. All for the exact same reasons that I gave.

>but she "can't fight?" That's what I was responding to --

fighting involves more than just throwing up armbars. Today she showed she has no idea how to throw her hands. You see her lazy ass ground and pound attempts? Also her wrestling is awful. She was holding a head lock with no where else to go for way to long. Could have gotten swept again if she held it longer. She has an armbar.

>That could happen with Rousey --- but of what I've seen of her
>training, she seems fairly competent on her feet.

but damn near any fighter will look good on their feet in training. You know how many gym sessions I have watched where guys are having insane sessions hitting the mitts but never perform in sparring or fights?

It's not as

this is exactly my point. I am fine with women fighting. But UFC is the premier organization in MMA. You have a shit division now. You have a division with maybe 3 girls worth a damn. No depth at all. I dont know if it will last.

but it makes sense $$$$ wise and I understand that. This is a blatant cash grab. Which is the main reason it bothers me.

I've watched them on Strikeforce, Invicta, and Bellator..those women can kick ass. They're just as skilled as the guys.

Now if you want to say the competition isnt deep, okay. The problem is, you're talking about a world class judoka who would have won gold at the Olympics had she competed last year, and there aren't that many women's combat sports to compete in. But as far as fight quality, it's excellent.

I've been all in on UFC Primetime and Countdown to 157, and I think they've done a halfway decent of making Liz seem like a formidable contender (even if she's not), and not just a can.

They've given it enough narrative that if the Girllrilla somehow wins, it won't be a killer blow to WMMA.

A great fight with a game opponent in Carmouche. It made both of them recognizable and famous, and showed new viewers that women's MMA isn't a shadow of what the men do, or a clown show, like women's boxing.

I'm sure Zuffa will put some extra money in Carmouche's pocket for that fight, and she'll have fights in Zuffa for a while.

Rousey taps guys for a living. To beat her someone's going to need a pretty strong grappling and submission defense.

Cat Zingano sounds like she could give Rousey a run, at least on paper. She's got the Muay Thai background and her husband is supposed to be a pretty good bjj practitioner. So if she gets by Miesha Tate, then we may see an interesting fight.

Other than her and Marloes Coenen, there's nobody that can touch Rousey right now, outside of maybe an Olympic woman wrestler stepping into the mix.
