""Fuck that! You can change somebody's life." -- Rickey Henderson"

Another Reason Why Rickey Is the Greatest
by Robert J. Baumann - February 21, 2013

Rickey Henderson is the fucking greatest for many reasons. The following anecdote is further proof of said.

"Rickey was the most generous I guy I ever played with, and whenever the discussion came around to what we should give the fringe people - whether it was a minor leaguer who came up for a few days or the parking lot attendant - Rickey would shout out, "Full share!" We'd argue for awhile and he'd say, "Fuck that! You can change somebody's life!" I admired Rickey's heart but I usually came down somewhere in the middle."

from Long Shot by Mike Piazza

Rickey got his, theres no denying that: made over $44million in his time as a player. But Rickey knew that not everyone in the game would get their shot to make millions, and Rickey didnt know what kind of shit people had going on at home, so maybe Rickey figured people went through some of the same shit that Rickey came through cause Rickey had it kinda tough. So when Rickey can vote to spread some wealth around to those who dont have his talents (and really, who does?), he cant see a single damn reason not to do so.

Mike Piazza, who made over $120millon as a player and hailed from wealth and baseball privilege to begin with, came down somewhere in the middle.

Fuck that, said Rickey. Fuck that indeed.

....Rickeys and Piazzas and players with top-level contracts, then the snark at the end of this post would be dead on. But I imagine the backup catcher or the utility infielder making the league minimum was less thrilled about Rickey wanting to give peripheral guys full shares.

More important than a guy who got a cup of coffee in September and definitely more than the parking lot attendant, to be sure. But they're also people who'd lose money if they started giving out playoff shares according to WAR.

edit: I was slow on the uptake with the snark part, so edited title.

No, I didn't. A guy who's on the roster all year is an automatic full share. That has zilch to do with a cup-of-coffee guy, or the lot attendant.

And after your edit, still no.

Rickey also owns a bunch of apartments in Oakland. One of my softball teammates and his friends lived in one of them. Their toilet got clogged up and they called the attendant about it. Later Rickey showed up at their door and went in to fix the toilet himself.

The deeper they get, the bigger the pot is. So this year, when they Giants won the World Series, their pool was $377,002.64.

Year to year it breaks down like this:

-World Series winner - 36%
-World Series loser - 24%
-League Championship losers - 12%
-Division Series losers - 3.25%
-Wild Card playoff losers - 1.5%

Each team has a players' meeting to determine how that money is divided up. So when Rickey is voting for the ball boy to get a full share, he's saying that he should get the same piece of the pie as the starting shortstop for the team in this instance.

Each team in the playoffs gets a bonus based on how far they go in the playoffs... for an established guy like Rickey or Piazza that's barely a drop in the bucket, for a younger guy it could make a significant difference, and for a clubhouse attendant that amount of money could changes things.

I am almost 100% sure he said somebody, instead of somebody's.

There is a diffeence, and if you have ever heard Rickey speak you would hear the difference.

dude claimed that the rest of the guests got like, Milt Thompson and Cal Eldred commons, but he was prob just trying to make me feel good.

i still blame hip-hop.

It was in that back pool playing area waiting to get up on a table, he was next on the list but needed a partner.

Somehow right at that moment in walks a small group that included Rickey Henderson (think this was during his Mets base coach period) and settles into a table towards the back.

My boy seizes the moment, hollers over to him, 'Yo Rickey, wanna play some pool? I need a partner'

Rickey looks towards the back, gets up slowly, walks right up to him, eyes him up and down for a bit then just asks matter-of-factly after a long pause:

"you any good?"

"yeah, I'm pretty good"

Rickey (guessing satisfied enough by the confidence of the reply that he didn't feel he was he signing up for an L) nods, says 'alright', then wanders off to go pick out a stick.

They ran the table for the rest of the night.
