"Who's your pick: Blake Griffin or Shawn Kemp?"

this question got a good response in another sports group.

beginning of kemp's career was awesome but he fell off HARD. he played against Jordan in the Finals. His PG and head coach there are now hall of famers.

Blake. His first 3 years have been awesome, but has he reached his ceiling? Will he be able to keep weight off after he loses his bounce?

who do you want playing PF on your squad today?

he only had 1 season averaging 20 points, and that was with the Cavs.

Blake's rookie year stats: 22.5 points, 12.1 rbs

OKS this is a very good question. i'm open to hear it all.

Kemp's frontcourt comp: Barkely, Malone, Olajuwon, Ewing, Robinson

Griffin's frontcourt comp: Dwight Howard, Brooke Lopez, Randolph, Bynum, etc

And Kemp was the best player in the 1996 playoffs
INCLUDING Michael Jordan. One of the more thorough
performances by a power forward I've ever seen

He was on that running and trapping and pressing and using his depth....sometimes the minutes and shots weren't there to put up huge stats.

Blake's minutes are down this year into what Kemp would typically get, and his numbers are down a bit too because of that.

Last year and Blake's rookie year he was playing 37-38 mpg.

Kemp actually played his most minutes when he was fat, in Cleveland, and played around 32-33 minutes per during his SEA prime. Average it out per minute and Kemp has way better rebounding and shot blocking numbers, while scoring at a good clip while shooting around in the mid-50s percentage wise, though people should note that Blake is also shooting around 54% the last two seasons.

My general feeling is that Kemp was better because I haven't seen Blake really impose his will on a game that often yet, while I know Kemp did, even if he didn't do it that long. But I don't think people give Blake enough credit for his improvement and work ethic. I don't think he's close to peaking, but until I see him impose his will on the court more consistently, I give peak Kemp the edge.

because the RainMan to me was the best player on the floor back during the 96 finals and his display was scary.

Gary Payton is One of the Greatest Players Ever, however he wasn't the type of PG that CP3 is and it makes a difference.

if Kemp had have played in Lob city he would have been 3 times bigger than Blake at this stage.

remember Kemp was giving a nickname back when it counted to have one, imagine Kemp in Lob city with CP3 as his PG?

I take Blake on potential alone. He's more disciplined, so I can't see him Kemping himself out of the league.

But yes, Kemp was better than anything we've seen from Blake.

i'd go as far to say that he was the best foe jordan and the bulls faced in the finals.

imo rodman and the size with the bench beat the sonics. jordan good not great in that finals same with scottie, however rodman imo was the mvp of the bulls in that series, but kemp was the best player on either side for that one series imo

Blake ain't done shit yet, but some crazy dunks. If he develops a consistent shot, some more moves, then it will be a convo.

i do think Blake is steady improving though.

In response to Reply # 32

As high has he jumps, he'll never be a big shot blocker (short arms), but he's become a good positional defender and is great at blitzing those pick n rolls and getting steals. Weird to think of him as a positional defender like Nick Collison but he's no longer a liability on that side of the floor.

assume that he isn't good at certain things because the media (who also doesn't watch him regularly) makes the same inaccurate statements.

but the few times i've seen him this season, he posts and takes jumpers more than he dunks or get lobs. not comparing the 2 or saying who's better but the same people that are saying "blake don't have a post game" are the same people who just last year were saying "lebron don't got a post game."

It's just that his shot isn't legit yet so, when he make them it really fools gold. Teams will play the percentages all day, everyday. If it was the Reignman, he would find the gap & put someone on a poster or draw a foul but Blake's at the moment his face-up game is laughable.

They were that bandwagon team you pick up for no reason at that age other than you like some players or colors or something.

Rocking Starter jackets, writing to Kemp as part of a 6th grade writing project asking for autographs (he never responded). They were like my growing up and being too cool to bandwagon for the Bulls and Jordan anymore team.

the loss to the nuggets was totally inexcusable. their performance in the finals reeked of being outcoached, they had the offensive spacing of a much shittier team (think losing Nets teams, who had WAY less offensive talent).
