"Who was THE best athlete to come out of your high school?"

By best, you could use skill, athleticism, success in the pros or whatever you'd like to quantify it. Hell, it's your school...do what you feel. Two come to mind immediately for me. The first would be Joe Johnson (lol, not him). Joe was a Senior when I was a freshman. He played DE and DT. Up until then, he was the biggest human I had ever seen in person. He got a full ride to Louisville and was selected 13th overall in 1994 by the Saints. In his 10 years there, he made the Pro Bowl twice...one of which came in 2000 when he was also an All-Pro selection and Comeback Player of the Year. After the Saints, he played two seasons in Green Bay. I remember he used to come back up to the school...always in some kind of big ass truck.

The next would be my dude Kelly Thames. Whereas I didn't know Joe very well at all, Kelly and I were tight. We kept hearing about this 8th grader coming over that was already like 6'4 or some shit. His freshman year he came in and the varsity coach was already like "he's mine". I was one grade ahead of him, so we had a couple classes together. He was one of those dudes who could get along with anyone. Never had beef. Just a genuinely good dude. My Senior year he led the team to the State tourney. It was held at Mizzou. We didn't win it all, but I remember him telling me "D, I'm gonna be back here" and sure enough that's where he chose to play his college ball. He proceeded to go to work and was named Big Eight Rookie of the Year. Seemed like the sky was the limit for him until he tore his knee up during practice at the Hearns Center. It was even on the evening news here. Folks were HURT. He had to redshirt his sophomore year. He came back and had a very respectable three years at Mizzou, but he was never the same guy. At his best, he was a 6'7/205 3 who could run, pass, get to the rim at will and rebound his ass off. At his worst, he was slower, less and explosive and being made to play out of position down low because the Mizzou didn't have a true big man at the time. He once told me some things about coach Norm Stewart that I'll leave in the vault. He went on to play a little ball overseas and now he's a High School coach. Crazy, cuz I wonder if he plays the "what if" game in his head as much as I do in mine.

is the de facto answer

but while i was there prolly Shawne Phillips of the Chargers. He was one year ahead of me, and played TE and De. and was a PF on the Bball squad.

My freshmen year Kareem Mckenize of the Jets and Giants was a senior and was highly recruited to Penn State. It was a big deal when Joe Pa came to his house.

all time? probably Conrad Mcrae

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conrad_McRae

we got a whole buncha olympic fencers though.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

Idrees was a 6'2 bout 207 corner back
he was an absolute beast was an all state hurdler, had hops and ran a 4.4

I seen that dude make more than a few incredible plays on D. I was 2 grades under him but he was amazing to watch.

Drees played for memphis and ended up being drafted by the Colts in the 2nd round. He started as a rook. Played about 6 years in the L.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/nfl/players/5484/index.html

Gordon was tail back pretty much the whole time i was in HS. I was fullback. he is easily one of the coldest rbs i ever seen in person pro or otherwise. He was basically like a baby Barry Sanders.
dude was ridiculous but colleges were on that bs cause they claimed he was small so they were all trying to make him a reciever or db. He got kinda played at GT cause they were all on Joe burns plus he had injuries early on so he didnt really get burn until Chan took over. But he ended up beasting his senior year.

And you are right about Kelly Thames, he was supposed to be that dude, but spill the dirt on Norm Stewart, I never really liked him anyway, he looked like the type of dude that said "nigger" under his breath a lot, lol

Dashon Goldson and Ebony Hoffman would be up there too...

we have 2 in D-1 football now that have a solid chance on going to the NFL in Tennessee's Byron Moore Jr. and Washington's Sean Parker

We have 4 at the school now though who are going to be contenders in the long run to get up there..

QB- Troy Williams
DT- Paulo Lepua
LB- Keishawn Bierria

and from our girls basketball team G- Latecia Smith... she's only in the 10th grade and is already a dominate player.... She led us to a City Championship as a freshman, and is bout to lead us to another one this year....

He was there 97-98 for sure, not sure about 96-97. And his sister came 98-99, Udo, so yep that's Bishop too.

Noelle Quinn is still active too, WNBA. The Twins, Errick and Derrick basically ran it when I was there. I graduated 02

Wayman Tisdale would be the knee-jerk go to, though he had a sort of okay pro career. Etan Thomas was the best all around person/athlete we produced. If you could roll an entire legacy into one, the Lockett family is up there. RW McQuarters and Felix Jones are quickly becoming the most disappointing. And the best I saw that made the wrong decision was Mike Wilson, who could have been a perennial Probowl linebacker but elected to take baseball money and has been stuck in AAA Tacoma for years now, incapable of dealing with major league junk.

we aint pump out athletes like that.

i'll never forget seeing Lebron systematically destroy Reyshawn Terry when SVSM came to town. if you told me it was gonna take him 8+ years to win a title i would've thought you were batshit crazy. i figured he'd be the goddamn GOAT 8 years into the game after seeing him live.

by far

but Shane Battier is a close 2nd, his brother Jeremy was actually a really good football player...

and Ray McCallum Jr for the UDM Titans is a hell of a point guard with a good shot of being drafted

edit, and my high school would kick the shit out of yours in everything.

actually i football camped with jeremy battier twice in high school

dude was kinda slow for a WR but he was big, ran some crisp ass routes, and had top-notch hands

i think he could have been an NFL'r if not for the concussions

Hard to believe that we had him and Peyton Manning and didn't win a National Championship in 1997. With a better coach, we could have had what Alabama has now in the 90s with the talent we had.

I remember his first game, after Fulmer refused to play him the first two games, he absolutely lit it up.

Six plate appearances, one MLB hit. A pretty distinguished MiLB and Indy Ball career in the nineties.

Some good runners too. A 3:39 1500 guy. A 1:45 800 guy. A woman who was an All-American like a dozen times due to being really, really versatile. 2:05 800m, 4:10 1500, 9:17 3000m, 15:55 5000m.

Real answer, all-time, probably Tony Gwynn. No one really thinks of us as a baseball school (even though we also had Chase Utley and Milton Bradley), Poly is all football, and our best all-time there was probably Willie McGinest.

Best while I was there, knee jerk answer is Desean Jackson (though he didn't super blow up til the year I left) or Marcedes Lewis (also a beast on the basketball team), but Hershel Dennis was the man on the football team. His knee blew up a couple times in college and that SC backfield was crowded, but I still think he woulda done things in the League if things broke different for him.

You could damn near start of lineup of just Rambos. The Casons (of Antoine Cason on the Chargers and Aveion who used to play for the Lions) are their cousins too. Those late-90s Poly squads with Kenyon Rambo, Sammie Parker, Chris Lewis, Herman Ho Ching, Kareem Kelly, and Rideaux were all my jam.

bruh was INCREDIBLE, and not on some homeboy
shit but on some damn this nigga is the TRUTH

Cal Hi Athlete of the year for 2000-01 (football, basketball and track)

Cali is a big ass state, that should give you an idea

Scored 58 total TDs that year in football
Avg'd 20 and 5 in hoop
And made the finals in track for state every year

I could go on and on but I just remember all the times
we used to run pickup with STELLAR comp, this nigga

One particular day I won't forget is when he went
head up with Gilbert Arenas at a college pickup
game (he was playing for the Warriors then) and
was givin him and everybody else hell. Gil prolly
wasn't goin all in but he wasn't pussyfootin either

Bruhs story was similar to many others tho

Full scholly to Nebraska for football
Couldn't get his grades right and had to go the
JUCO route. Went to Hutch in Kansas, then to SFCC
(JUCO football powerhouse). Got an injury, started blowin
tree and grades went down. Nebraska backed off.

He finally got everything right and got a scholly
w/ football and possibly hoop for Temple. Tore his knee up
before getting there and still aint all the way right to this day.

I respect bruh because he doesn't sulk and talk about
what could have been. He just lives his life for
him and his family and is still a real stand up
dude to this day

But we all knew how great he was.
Just a shame things panned out the way they did,
he coulda been awesome.

We had a handful of others like All-Pac 10 safety Riccardo Stewart and another kid, DeAndre Belin, who was easily the most talented athlete I've ever seen at the HS level. He had a lot of family issues though and also some learning disability. He could have Prop 48'd but decided not to. At one point he was playing D2 ball but came back home, got caught up in various bullshit and wound up getting killed. It was very sad for me, I thought of all the dudes in his family, he had a real shot at making it.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

he played middle linebacker and won state his junior year. started at Texas, and is now a captain on the Cardinals

honorable mentions: Kyle Williams, Paul Konerko. Devonte Neal plays at Notre Dame now, he might make some noise.

I went to Riverside but fucked up my sophomore year. I did one semester at both schools (Hillside at night) before finishing up at Hillside. Of course at that point it was a completely different school in a different location.

I used to see Rodney around town during the NBA offseason and he always seemed like a really good dude. Loved going to Devine's. There'd be Duke girls around saying shit like, "That guy tried to tell me he's an NBA player!"

He used to do a big BBQ once a year and bought his kegs at my old job. After the accident I helped him set up over the phone since getting around had gotten tough. They ended up returning a couple of kegs completely full. Not as many people showed up. I had a long talk with his wife about it and it completely broke my heart. He was a hero here.

He worked with Richard Avedon on the school magazine, too. The list of famous alumni is pretty insane: Burt Lancaster, Tracy Morgan, Will Eisner, Stan Lee, Bob Kane and Bill Finger (co-creators of Batman), Ralph Lauren, Kool Keith, Neil Simon, Garry Marshall, Judd Hirsch, Robert Klein and a gang of other people.

AND, I just found out Sugar Ray Robinson went there as well. He should have had top billing over Dolph and Tiny.

Obviously he was/is a good to great college and pro player.

Had he not had knee injuries, imagine the same player but with explosive jumping ability. We're talking like a shorter Lebron.

I once saw him pin a kid's shot on the backboard in H.S. and B Roy's whole hand was above the square.

Those knee injuries destroyed that ability.

edit: as a pure athlete, Isaiah Stanback (NFL QB/WR) was pretty up there too.

For the longest I thought Roddick went to Westside but I gues she was just born in the distrcit yet grew up in Austin and Florida. So fuck him.

Biere was the grade below me and I graduated in 2007 so it feels really fucking weird to say that because he was NOT great in Nebraska high school ball...he did stand out a little at KU mostly because he grew into a mountain, but I'm pretty surprised he made it to the NFL.

Nebraska in general isn't stereotypical for athletes, though. I ran track against Niles Paul, and he was a three sport monster, so I'd pick him if I could. But Central's got him, as well as most of our better athletes.

UNC too. Doleman was way before my time, but I remember hearing stories about him. It could just be the people I know who went to York and live in the area, but Doleman doesn't seem to be a guy that's univerally revered/respected. At least not in the way you would expect an NFL HOFer from a small city to be.

whats crazy is he played pop warner with my neighbor along with Deonce Whitaker. Deonce at the time had damn near every rushing record for the state of California. They were both top running backs in So Cal. Happened to play in the same league and played on the same pop warner team growing up. My neighbor played on their team for 5 years and they never lost a game in all 5 of those years. It was crazy.

They went to my junior high though. My high school didn't have sports.

He was older than the other freshmen but he was so disruptive at Tailback that he had to practice with the Varsity.

6'2, 2 hundred something, and one of the fasted people out there.

We had 5 blue chip recruits on that field, two future NFL players.

And he stood out like a sore thumb. He didn't even look right in pads. Looked as if they were meant to protect lesser human beings and were an annoyance.

He didn't come back after spring ball, had money to make.

But I'll never forget him.

Ran over a future pro bowler at sprint champion after running past him the play before for 85 yards.

He looked him up and blasted him like he was a child.

But that's the way talent goes...

he was not just a beast on the gridiron, dude could hoop too...I think he also ended up valedictorian...he was a cool cat really...

after my time, but George Hill is turning out to be quite a baller

I heard Mike Woodson was a beast on that 1980 championship team with coach Smith!

There was actually a cat who played football for Butler, Arnold Mickens, who set all types of rushing records in the late 90's...Not sure what ever happened to that cat

for real he's from Evanston, IL and even though we are good in sports never had an all start standout in any sport.

Real athletes, not too much to right home about:
Cecil Martin (former Eagles and Badgers FB)
Kevin Foster (former Cubs pitcher)
Emery Morehead (former Bears TE)
Everette Stephens (stint in the NBA)
Damon Jones (Jags TE for 4 years)

we're known more for actors like Jeremy Piven, John and Joan Cusak, Zach Gilford, Michael Madsen.
