"O_E check in: Canadian Hockey fans appear to be the LEAST RACIST" Mon Feb-04-13 11:49 AM by Orbit_Established
Relatively speaking, of course.
I'm all over the coverage of the Subban family. They are my test family for 'cism.
The message boards, the discussions. I'm readin'.
For non-Hockey fans, here are the quick facts:
- PK Subban is analogous to...say Carmelo Anthony...not quite Lebron, but perennial all-star caliber talent who is perceived as whiny and a slight underachiever. He was even involved in a contract dispute just now.
No outrage from fans. A few say he shouldn't whine. Most say he's *underpaid*, are excited for his return. Apparently they were chanting his name the other night, and he wasn't even there.
the "he hogs the puck" thing is a *tad* racist but Canadian fans rip on Ovie the same way/worse. So, if the worst thing I can say about Canadians is they treat black players like they treat the Russian super skaters, than NHL is easily the most racially friendly of all major sports.
- Malcom Subban: Drafted by the Bruins (We already went through this irony). Also considered a high risk/high reward talent. Got roasted in the WJC just now...some 'cism in how he called out by fans, for sure. Thing is, Canadian folks also defended this kid in EARNEST, and not on some white liberal guilt, but with HOCKEY arguments:
Again: anytime a goalie gets beaten up, they gonna get shit on, ESPECIALLY in a NATIONAL event like the WJC that Canadians take pride in. But the defenses and analyses of his poor performance have been spectacular. He is only 19.
I'll get to the third Subban kid and Seth Jones (!!!) later.
Edit: NOTE -- the key element here is that both the Subban kids have had TROUBLE. THAT IS HOW YOU JUDGE 'CISM. How do white folks treat you in the midst of CONFLICT. In the US it is ALWAYS worse to suck when you're black. ALWAYS.

is a strongly convincing argument that the skating in front of him was (im being generous here)...not good
im not sure about blaming murphy for gaudreau's goal. that was not a 1 on 1, that was a 2 on 1 but he definitely played it passively. had that other defenseman been backchecking better maybe murphy would have had a better play. regardless the rest of the team hung subban out to dry there.
that 4th goal, gotta make that save, even if reinhardt got turned inside out. that should be an advantageous angle for the goalie and subban didnt attack the play very well.
but canada got their asses beat as a team, the way any team does that gives up 10 goals in 2 games, and i was glad. because fuck anyone who takes a player with a year of NHL service to the WJC.

I think there is definitely some latent racism in the discussions about PK. There have been comments from other players around the league (I'm looking at you Mike Richards) about how he needs to "tone it down" and "show respect", etc. You don't get the same comments around the league about other trash-talkers/shit disturbers like Brad Marchand, etc.
Also, there are rumours that PK "takes up too much space" in the dressing room. The new coach also mentioned that he was looking forward to making PK "a better person".
And then there was the case of the two Montreal fans who dressed up as Subbanators in full blackface, which was shown on the local sports network while the commentators had a good chuckle about it.
Personnally, I think that hockey being sooooo predominantly white in addition to the hockey "culture" that fans latch onto (basically players have to be humble, lunch-pail, hard-working kind of guys and THAT'S IT) are main reasons why PK's personnality and enthusiasm get the stinkeye from many fans and players. I've actually heard comments along the lines of "this isn't the NBA or the NFL". Ugh.
Oh yeah, the new coach also banned PK's post-victory "triple-low-five" celebration that he would do with Carey Price, the team's goalie.

But you see that shit get DEALT WITH, read up on Trevor Daley and John Vanbiesbrouck.
With Subban, sure there is a good amount of racism from some fans but overall he is well liked in Canada because he was on two very good junior national teams. I do think he gets called out for being arrogant or flashy or talking shit a lot, but I don't know how much of that is racism. It seems to be his reputation around the league. But I do think there are some latently racist critics out there, sure.
Malcolm is more reserved and is probably, deep down, a weirdo like every goalie. He has a very different personality. People don't really know him yet.
Jordan is the youngest brother, he is probably the most naturally talented of the group and he is well aware of it. His personality is a lot like PK's.

He was in a bad position to negotiate, so yes, he wound up underpaid. That was mostly a function of his contract status (restricted free agent off an entry level deal). But he has also been kind of overused in Montreal, too. He has been their number one defenseman for a lot of the time since the 2010 playoffs but that is mostly because Andrei Markov has been injured. Subban is not a legit No. 1 yet, he still makes a lot of mistakes and is kind of overextended. He is more of a guy who would be the better player on a second pairing and get a lot of power play time on most good teams for now. Markov is back now after an extended absence and has been their best player this season.
It's kind of hard to compare the impact of a player in the NBA to one in the NHL but I'd look more at an up and coming big man, say Demarcus Cousins, as a comparison. Subban is a lot more polished and stable personality wise, but as his performance goes they might be considered similar as cross-sport comparisons go.

than anything else.
people in canada got to know PK pretty well in 2008 and 2009. he's mostly a big fan favorite. he would have gotten a bigger contract, too, but the new cba made a long deal make little sense for montreal.

I'm just using it to highlight how I think some Montreal folk have been rather decent to dude
