"San Francisco 49ers off-season post"

Welp, that kinda sucked. So close and yet so far. We got doomed by poor play in the first half and shitty play-calling on the final three plays of the game. And yes, the refereeing was kinda suspect, but we had many a chance to rise above that and didn't. So it goes.

On to the next season. The good news? Almost all of our contributors are certainly returning, and the good ones are getting better. Kaep is still reaching his potential. For the first half of the SB, he looked very much like a guy starting his 10th NFL game, but he brought the ruckus in the second half. Crabtree has turned the corner and will continue to get better. James will continue to improve. Our D didn't quite look like our D for a little over half the game, but I don't see it slipping in the season to come.

The bad news? The NFC West isn't getting any easier. Seahawks are on the come up. The Rams are improving. The Cardinals really just need any competent QB to make them competitive. So we can't just rest on our laurels right now.

Off-season priorites: First, trade Alex Smith if we can. Looks doable, as apparently the Chiefs and the Browns are interested. I'd be fine with him on either of those squads. Second, draft some defensive players. Yeah, we're strong, but our key guys played LOTS of snaps during the season. And by the time the play-offs came, a lot were hurt and exhausted. And seeing as we may lose Goldson, we gotta keep the talent pool fresh. Third, probably pick up another WR. Moss is certainly gone, so we need another option.

So, that's it in broad strokes. Sucks we couldn't make it, but we have the talent and ability to be back next year. So let's make it happpen.

Whitner blew a coverage too but Goldson acted like he didn't even know what half the plays were and instead stayed focused on diving head first into piles.. I hope Hunter still has his burst. Our future Hunter/James backfield looked really promising as Gore fades.

I think we can all agree Kaep is going to be exceptional. I think he's probably in the 5-10 range already. His mistakes--and there were some big ones--this post-season were all inexperienced rookie mistakes that are going to get better with more coaching and experience. At 25 he's playing about as good as Steve Young did at 29.

Aldon Smith is 23. And he better work on some additional moves this off-season. Maybe it was injury, but it looked like opposing teams figured him out by the end of the year.

Biggest heartbreak of last night was Gore not getting his ring. He might still be on the team if/when we win one, but unlikely he'll be The Man on that team. Pretty sure if he takes one in on that last drive for his 2nd TD, he's Super Bowl MVP.

He and Harbaugh need to sit down and script their situational plays better. And Harbaugh needs to be more forceful about overruling. He admitted he didn't like that stupid pitch call from the Rams game but he went with it anyway. I have a feeling he was not crazy about those goal-line calls either, but he's ultimately responsible.

It will help having a full off-season and playbook designed around Kaep, rather than one designed around Smith and hastily adjusted for Kaep mid-season.

I figure we've got our running game set. We're deep enough at the position to keep Gore as fresh as possible for a play-off run.

Last night there was definite room for improvement, that's for sure. Culliver looked awful. On the other hand, Flacco just made some tosses that no one should have been able to catch, yet Boldin and Jones somehow did.

i really hope they remain competitive next season, but you never know what can happen, and there's always the opportunity for injuries.

i don't think the secondary is really bad; it's just they kind of get picked apart by good QBs when they play zone because the front 4 does have difficulty getting pressure at times.

We did it all to ourselves. I said i thought we'd shoot ourselves in the foot with a James or Gore fumble and a Kap pick.. but that we would still be able to over come it. What I didn't expect was we'd give up a return too and give up so many big pays. I'm really down on our defense this morning... the missed tackles, the dumb penalties, miss assignments.. very disappointed in them dudes right now.

The offense did pretty much what I felt the could coming in... I figured the Ravens would try and stop the run first which would create space for our passing game.. after exploiting that we could come back to the run.. and that ended up being exactly what we did. Still wasn't enough due to the slim margin of error we left ourselves with.

Let me make it clear that Kap played great for a guy in this 10th start... but I can't help but find some irony in the fact he audibled into that 4th down fade basically losing the game with his head.. our old QB's strong suit.

It just sucks period.. bring on the A's

I mean how you not gonna give Gore the ball at least a couple times down there? Even if he doesn't get in on the first carry, it forces the Ravens to call TO or the clock runs.. giving them less time if the 9ers do score. Just puzzling all the way around... but the 4th down was on Kap. It's spots like that where you need your QB to make the right read and adjustment... he's doing great for a guy with this little on field experience... but it's an area he's going to have to get better in... and I think he will

But the missed tackles killed me. We gave Flacco to much time to scramble and make some incredible passes. One time it seemed like Brooks just stopped instead of going after Flacco; I guess he thought the play got whistled dead, but it was still dumb. Culliver getting beat badly sucked. And it was inexcusable that on that 109-yd run-back, dude ran right through our coverage, and McBath was the only person that even touched him.

Could be the last game he plays, period.

I'll also give him props for the mentoring; Crabs & the other WRs, Alex Smith, and Kaep liked having him around, but he stunk it up for much of the game. Quit on routes, don't show much effort in general. If he was trying to use this as a showcase game for some other team to sign him next season, it was a pretty big failure.

It's so mindbogglingly bizarre you have to question this dudes mind. The fact he said he was better than Jerry only a few days early makes it even crazier.

I just wish we had either Williams or Manningham Sunday, then we could have just sat his ass down.

Part of me thinks dude was sulking for being involved early. During a first real drive, he was wide open in the endzone on that pass that Kaep threw to Crabtree. After that play, he stopped making an effort. Just so fucking frustrating.

James was occasionally sloppy last night, but he's still a rookie, and looked great against Atlanta. I think we've got the RB position set with Hunter and James sharing time as the "deuce" to cut down on the time that Gore has to be on the field. And Dixon isn't bad either. RB is one of the spots I'm not sweating.

And I love James in tight space... he knows when to make himself 'small' at just the right time. There were a few runs in the Falcon game where he got low and lunged for an extra 3-5 yards when it didn't even look like there was a hole to get through.

I'm more than happy with where James is seeing he's only played about half a season.

But our coverage unit was a huge liability this year, culminating in perhaps the decisive play of the Super Bowl. And he was never able to get David Akers' mind right.

I know he has coached some great units. So was 2012 an aberration, or should we start looking for Seely's replacement?

49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh met with the media to wrap up the 2012 season, and he hit on a variety of topics. Although we did not hear a ton of specifics, Coach Harbaugh did have some comments about free agent free safety Dashon Goldson.

Harbaugh was asked about Goldson and his long-term future and he did say he thinks Goldson was the kind of guy who deserves to get rewarded. He acknowledged Goldson would be a priority as they head into the offseason.

We can take this with a certain measure of salt given that Harbaugh never really committed to specifics. Of course Goldson is a priority. His contract status is one of the biggest offseason issues the team faces. However, just because he is a priority, does not mean a deal will get done. There is a lot to be figured out before that can happen.

Goldson also spoke to the media earlier in the day, and indicated he really did not want to deal with the franchise tag for a second straight year. That again is not a surprising comment. His agent will work with the team, and we'll find out in the next month or so if the team will tag Goldson.

It is noteworthy from Goldson's comments that the team did give him some heads-up on other contracts that were being done:

It was just like, they were getting deals done and I could get a deal done. There wasn't any hard feelings. It was just, "OK." They respected me. They let me know before they signed guys. I had the heads up. I respect them for that.

The relationship seems to be on solid ground as we move into the offseason. Whether that means a deal gets done remains to be seen. It will come down to dollars at this point, and where the 49ers value Goldson compared to the rest of the market. And of course, if they are willing to risk a potential holdout if they tag him for the second straight year.

How would you handle the situation? Tag, extension or let him walk? I like an extension if the price is right, given some of the consistency concerns. Goldson is a big-time playmaker, but sometimes he can be incredibly frustrating. We take the bad with the good, but with pay-day approaching, the 49ers need to figure out where they value the good and the bad.

Harbaugh will always talk up his own guys but you have to include the subtext which generally has to do with price. I'm sure the 49ers would love to bring Goldson back at the right price, but I'm not sure the Niners value for him will match up to what he can get on the open market.

The 49ers have been pretty consistent under Baalke in setting internal values on players and sticking to it. They don't really get caught in bidding for guys and have been more than willing to let guys walk if they want more than what the 49ers were offering. We saw it last year with Josh Morgan, Harbaugh consistently talked about how much they wanted him back until he got the offer from the Redskins and then the Niners just moved on to the next guy and signed Manningham for less.

Goldson has been trying to get top dollar for two years now and after a couple pro bowls he might be able to get it, I just don't think the Niners will go that high to get him.

I don't read too much into it either way... Harbaugh is the coach not the GM. What else can he say about a player that may be coming back? I mean he's on record as saying he wants Randy back too but I don't see that happening.

But if we do bring Goldson back then I think we have to move Whitner... as much as I like Whitner (and would rather have him than Goldson) I'm just not comfortable without having a better cover guy on our back end.

According to the report, Thomas was able to get out of her 2002 Mercedes C230 with minor injuries as both cars began burning. The Bryans were pronounced dead at the scene.

Thomas has been arrested on suspicion of vehicular homicide, driving while intoxicated and reckless operation of a vehicle.

Damn. Thoughts go out to Walker at this time.

We left New Orleans Monday morning and were actually caught up on I10 due to this crash. Heard it was a fatal accident as we were scanning the local radio to see what was going on. There was close to a 6 mile back up and about a 2 hour lock on traffic.

NFL Trade Rumors: Could the 49ers make a play for Percy Harvin?

According to sources, the Minnesota Vikings are pursuing trade offers for WR Percy Harvin. We discuss whether or not this move makes sense for the San Francisco 49ers.

Heading into the 2013 offseason, the San Francisco 49ers will be once again looking to situate the wide receiver corps. After Ted Ginn Jr. and Randy Moss inevitably depart, the Niners will have only four contracted players at the position.

And of the four returning, two are coming off season-ending injuries and another has yet to record a single NFL catch. Michael Crabtree stands out as the one dependable WR for the Niners going forward. It's a virtual certainty that the 49ers will look for outside help this offseason, and should explore all options.

On Sunday, NFL.com reported that the Minnesota Vikings will be examining trade offers for Percy Harvin. The Vikings WR currently has one year left on his deal, and reportedly wants out. Finally, the Vikings are in agreement and seem willing to meet Harvin's demands.

The 49ers will have roughly 14 available selections in the 2013 NFL Draft. They could potentially gain more with the trade of Alex Smith as well.

49ers 2013 picks
1. First round: Own pick
2. Second round: Own pick
3. Third round: Own pick
4. Third round: From Carolina in trade-back during 2012 draft
5. Third round: Likely compensatory selection
6. Fourth round: Own pick
7. Fifth round: Own pick

According to Steve Bateman, the talk around Minnesota is that they are looking for a 2nd and a 4th rounder to part with Harvin. If that is the case, the 49ers can make the trade and still have three 3rd round picks to move around in the early-to-mid rounds.

They would still have 12 picks to do whatever they please, leaving them plenty of ammunition to maneuver throughout the draft.

Harvin is an extremely dynamic player that could be a multidimensional threat for San Francisco. He can be a kick and punt returner, sharing time with Kyle Williams and LaMichael James. Over his career, Harvin has shouldered the return duties, emerging as one of the top threats in the league.

Again, since Ginn is expected to be on his way out, this would be a logical addition.

Harvin also operates out of the backfield and could potentially add an entire new dimension to the Pistol formation. With Harvin lining up in the backfield like Randall Cobb in Green Bay, San Francisco can introduce a litany of innovative new plays.

And if Delanie Walker leaves, Harvin can be that "swiss army knife" for the Niners.

Harvin was also greatly frustrated in Minnesota; likely because of the inconsistency and lack of dynamism outside the running game. In his fifth year, he could come to the Bay Area and find a home with sensation Colin Kaepernick. As a pass-catcher, Harvin possesses the perfect skill set for this timing-based West Coast hybrid system.

From a financial perspective, Harvin's cap figure in 2013 is set at approximately $4.02 million, which is a steal. The 49ers would have a dynamic tandem between him and Michael Crabtree, and it would cost them next to nothing. A lot of the top receivers average double-digit millions per season. Harvin's deal would be closer to what San Francisco paid Randy Moss this past season.

Now, given that Mario Manningham is coming off a torn ACL and owed a cap figure of $4.95 million in 2013, the 49ers may cut him and start fresh. If they part ways with Manningham, the 49ers can save $2.35 million in cap room and put it toward Harvin.

And once Harvin's deal expires in 2014, he could potentially take a deal to re-sign with the 49ers and lock down this WR group. The opportunity to win, see a lot of touches and play with a franchise quarterback may be enough to make Harvin fall in love with San Francisco.

This deal may not only work out in the short-term, but it could be a terrific move in the long run.

I don't agree that they should cut Manningham, he's still young and has big play potential, but Harvin would put return duties on LOCK PLUS give us another dynamic weapon on offense.

And damn, I thought we only had 11 draft picks, didn't realize we had FOURTEEN.

we have to put shit out of reach and go back to playing with a lead. the game is totally different for us when we do. being neck in neck in either of the last two games we played in and they're not even close IMO, but you expend so much energy making big comebacks and it becomes a war against the clock too....also, while he was on the field, Justin Smith from last year's playoff run wasn't there. i guess the big trade talk is what will be done with alex and the possibility of revis. i'm not particularly fond of doling out a lot of long-term money on a position that is so dependent on athleticism and speed to a guy who's coming off major injuries over the past few years. don't want another nate clements type of situation, although revis is better than clements ever was. the one thing about our front office that i'm confident in is that they will NOT just hand over the checkbook to someone.

i'd like to think that our team has become one that players are willing to take somewhat less for to join, which can help us stay around the top in the coming years. but my prime focus is the area where this team has been primarily constructed...

the DRAFT: with 11 picks, i expect some prime value to be obtained, namely at least one pro-bowl caliber player in the secondary, and a similar type of player on the defensive line. would be nice if there was a beast at NT that would allow us to draft/develop more speed on the outside, since we don't have much of a pass rush outside of what Justin sets up for Aldon, and Brooks occasionally.

on that note...hoping Aldon keeps his ass somewhere safe this offseason and J Smitty rehabs well for what may be his last year in the league. Kaep gonna work hard and ball the fuck out next year. need to finish this shit right though.

After a slow start and bad calls late cost them the NFC Championship, Walsh emphasized a 'leave no doubt' mentality going into '84... of course we know now that would turn into a 15-1 regular season and a super bowl title. I'd love to see Harbaugh take the video of Walsh talking to his team after that game and play it on the first day of camp.

Every year it's been SOMETHING with our FA wideouts

Braylon hurt then non-producing/griping/released

Randy was not a distraction but SUCH an underproducer

Manningham got hurt; I think he'll stay a good pickup but he still wasn't there at seasons end when we neeed him.

I want as little "stuff" attached to our wideouts as possible. I recognize injuries are part of the game, but I just want production and no tangential bullshit. More importantly, I want someone who will stay for a minute and not be a year in year out experiment, we've gone through this EVERY year for the past 3. I'm not even saying that I don't want Harvin, but that Jennings is another good option to consider and maybe a GREAT one if Harvin has the potential to be a pain in the ass.

The 49ers officially have a problem in the secondary. After letting him test the market in 2011 and franchising the hard-hitting safety last offseason, the 49ers are again faced with Dashon Goldson�s impending free agency.

Jim Harbaugh said Goldson deserves to be rewarded this offseason and seeing as the Hawk doesn�t want to be franchise tagged again, it appears a long term contract is the only way to get him back into a 49ers uniform for 2013.

As BASG pointed out, Harbaugh could see tagging the safety again as the �reward� he�s talking about. The salary for franchised players is the average of the five highest-paid players at their respective position. In this case, Goldson would be getting paid $7.45M if he was tagged again. That�s only $550,000 a year less than the $8M he�s rumored to be asking for, so what�s the big deal, right?

The problem is simple: franchise tagging Goldson would make him the second highest paid safety in the league behind only Troy Polamalu, who�s set to earn $7.5M in 2013. Polamalu�s contract is an overpayment at this stage of his career, so a better comparison might be Eric Weddle, whose 5-year, $40M contract comes close to what Goldson is seeking. Ultimately, paying Goldson what he�s asking for would make him one of the three highest paid safeties in the NFL.

With so much work to be done on the 49ers� payroll, is Goldson worth being paid top safety money? Weddle is widely regarded as one of the best safeties in the league and at first glance Buffalo Bills� Jairus Byrd is the most comparable player at his position in the free agent market. Here are their 2012 regular season statistics, side by side.

While Byrd was clearly the more solid safety of the three in 2012, it appears the Chargers asked Weddle to do more. Even then, Weddle wasn�t far behind Byrd. Goldson wasn�t close to either of them, however. He missed three times as many tackles Byrd missed, and the Buffalo Bill was superior in nearly every category.

PFF�s advanced scores show an even larger discrepancy.

Goldson graded out as by far the worst of the three safeties in every category except for pass rush. The differences are startling. While PFF isn�t the be-all/end-all when it comes to gauging a players worth, both regular and advanced statistics show Goldson isn�t worth nearly the money Weddle and Byrd are.

So how much should the 49ers pay for Goldson?

Here�s where it gets tricky � the top of the pay scale for safeties is absolutely littered with bad contracts.

Clearly the 49ers will get nowhere offering Goldson a contract as frugal as Harrison Smith�s or Kam Chancellor�s, but they would be grossly overpaying if they gave him a contract like Weddle�s. One possibility would be to wait and see what kind of money William Moore gets paid, but perhaps a fair barometer would be the contracts Kerry Rhodes and Tyvon Branch received.

Rhodes� deal, signed in 2008, is worth $33.5M over five years. $20M of it is guaranteed, including a $2M roster bonus in the third season of the deal with workout bonuses included. Branch�s deal, signed last offseason, is good for $26.6M over four years. $17.6M of it is guaranteed, and it includes a $5.6M signing bonus, a $3.5M roster bonus in the contract�s second year along with various incentives. Both deals even out to around $6.6M per year � considerably less than what Goldson is asking for, but nothing to sneeze at nonetheless.

The 49ers certainly have their work cut out for them if they plan on nailing down a fiscally responsible contract for the Hawk, and they�d better have a backup plan if he decides to take his services elsewhere.

The biggest downside was his ability to get plays off promptly. Coaches deserve blame for this, but ultimately it's the price we paid going from an unspectacular but experienced Smith to the phenomenal but still learning Kaepnernick.

Clark Judge of CBSSports.com suggests the 49ers now become a strong candidate to land New York Jets cornerback Darrell Revis, who is coming off a season-ending ACL tear.

If the 49ers do not trade for any veteran players, they can be expected to make a bundle of trades involving draft picks. The 49ers can move up in to select players they have targeted. They can also trade picks to move back into the 2014 draft.

Updated 49ers 2013 picks:

1. First round, No. 31 (No. 31 overall): Own pick
2. Second round, No. 2 (No. 34 overall): Pick from Kansas City for Alex Smith trade, which can be completed March 12

Safety and D-line are both pretty deep in this years draft. I'm not sure if it's worth packaging multiple picks to, say, move up in the first to grab Kenny Vaccaro when guys like Cyprien, Elam, Rambo, and Thomas are going to be available later in the draft. i guess if the 49ers brass really fell in love with a guy higher up in the first round they could move up, but I don't think there's a great drop-off from the top guys at those positions to the next tier.

Under the current NFL schedule rotation, Kansas City quarterback-in-waiting Alex Smith would play against his soon-to-be former team in 2014.

The 49ers are set to open play in their Santa Clara stadium at the beginning of the 2014 season. The 49ers last played the Chiefs in Kansas City in 2010, so barring a change to the schedule formula, Kansas City would come to the 49ers' new stadium in its inaugural season. The Chiefs inherit the final two years of Smith's contract, so he is signed through the 2014 season.

Speaking of Smith's contract, when he signed with the 49ers in the summer of 2005 as the No. 1 pick in the draft, his deal called for him to make $57 million over six seasons.

But after injuries in 2007 and 2008, Smith agreed to a significant pay cut. He signed two more contracts with the 49ers before the 2011 and 2012 seasons.

The final figures are in: Smith played eight seasons, during which time the 49ers paid him a total of $54.8 million, according to a league source.

That averages out to $6.85 million a season. Yes, that's a lot of money. But that's not an exorbitant amount of money for a quarterback in the NFL who was chosen with the No. 1 overall pick.

A lot has been made about Smith's past two seasons under the direction of an offensive-minded head coach, Jim Harbaugh, and the same offensive coordinator, Greg Roman. But Smith's turnaround really began after he came back from shoulder injuries that derailed his 2007 and '08 seasons.

In Smith's final four seasons with the 49ers, he started 45 games and completed 62.1 percent of his attempts with 62 touchdowns and 32 interceptions for a passer rating of 88.2

Second year in a row. I like the Boldin move, and I like the rumors about Josh Cribbs, he would fill a lot of holes in the way that Harvin was, plus he's familiar with Seely and I don't remember him ever making any headlines for anything negative. Give some picks for him for sure.

This is my thinking... what better guy to learn from too. But I think Reed has enough in the tank for one more good season... I was shocked to hear he has more ints than anyone over the last 3 years. So yeah he's fallen off but not so much he's not still making plays... my biggest concern is injury not poor play.

Lots of money flying around on the first day, 49ers doing their usual routine and waiting for the dust to clear. Being patient has been the right move for the 49ers the last two years, no reason to change that strategy now.

Between all the draft picks and the amount of quality free agents available I'm expecting the 49ers to get things sorted out. Although I'm a little nervous that the plan might be to hand Ian Williams the starting NT job right now, I have no idea what to expect out of him. Can Glenn Dorsey play NT in 3-4?

$7M/2 is less than either Soap or RJF got in free agency so he'll provide some saving for a position that is kind of minimized in the Niners scheme. He's pretty much been considered a disappointment because he was drafted so high by the Chiefs but he has graded out well in run defense the past couple of seasons. Doesn't really provide much of anything in the way of pressuring the passer though.

49ers have Nnamdi and Louis Delmas in for visits today which is interesting. Delmas is kind of like an injury-prone version of Goldson and Nnamdi could be a good fit in Fangio's defensive schemes but at this point I'm not sure he's better than Brown or Culliver on the outside. Doesn't look like a signing is imminent for either guy right now.

I still like Carlos Rogers but he definitely showed some signs of slowing down last season. But he really is the best guy on the roster to play the slot corner position by a pretty wide margin. I thought Perrish Cox might be able to help in that role but he looked very rusty when he got on the field last season and I wouldn't count on him for anything. I could see Culliver taking Rogers spot in the starting line-up next year but I think Rogers will still have value as the nickelback.

I don't know how much of Nnamdi's struggles were do to his role and how much was him getting older, but I think one thing it is safe to take away from his time in Philly is that he is an abysmal option as a slot corner. If he's going to have any success with the 49ers I think it would have to be playing out wide in man coverage which would mean taking snaps from either Brown or Culliver, who I think are out best outside cover guys.

and to answer beamers question... yeah I think he can still play. He was still playing like Nnamdi his last year in Oakland... I have a hard time believing a dude his age would just fall off the very next year. I don't know enough about Philly's system and what they were doing with him but I've heard more than one analyst say the Eagles had a bad system for him and that he'd fit well within Fangio's scheme. Plus he's a bay area kid who may feel more comfortable coming back home with something to prove... I'll be disappointed if we don't sign him.

In Oakland Nnamdi was not asked to shadow the other teams best receiver around the field. He played outside on one side of the field and when he was at his best took away his side of the field.

He's a big guy who in his youth had outstanding recovery speed. He was great at jamming his man off the line then, using the sideline as an extra defender, shadowing him down the field. In Philly he was asked to play a lot of different coverages, and he struggled with most of them. He couldn't really keep up with shifty slot receivers in the middle of the field, and on the outside he would get lost when asked to play in off coverage when he couldn't get his hands on the receiver.

He might work with the Niners because we don't ask our CB's to switch around based on match-ups, other than moving Rogers to the slot in the Nickel, and we play a lot of man coverage with safety help. Fangio will mix in the occasional zone scheme but Nnamdi would largely be asked to stay on one side of the field and stick to the outside receiver.

The biggest question I have about Nnamdi is how much of his sub-4.4 speed has he lost over the years? Does he still have the recovery speed to press at the line and then chase his man down the field? The 49ers seem to play a lot of off-coverage on the outside but that might just be a decision based on personnel. I don't think it would be a problem to let Nnamdi play more press coverage if that is what he is more comfortable with but the Niners are generally conservative in their coverages so if Nnamdi doesn't have the same recovery speed it may be a problem.

Those arrangements may not be ideal for either player, but at least it would give them a chance to play for a legitimate contender.

Acquired from the Philadelphia Eagles at the exorbitant cost of Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, a second-round draft pick and a six-year, $65 million contract in July of 2011, Kolb posted a 6-8 record with 17 touchdowns versus 16 interceptions in 15 games with the Cardinals.

The risky trade -- or, perhaps more accurately, the unwillingness to pull the cord after one season -- ended up costing general manager Rod Graves and coach Ken Whisenhunt their jobs.

Due an untenable $9 million base salary on top of a $2 million roster bonus that was set to trigger later in the day, Kolb never had a chance of keeping his roster spot without a pay cut. The two sides reportedly discussed different ways of restructuring his contract, but they couldn't find middle ground.

However, with quarterbacks Drew Stanton and Brian Hoyer both under contract and vying for a chance to start, Kolb probably will try to seek greener pastures. It doesn't get any greener than the New York Jets, a team that has already discussed adding Kolb to their quarterback mix "at the right price."

As Around the League's Gregg Rosenthal mentioned in his wrap-up of free agency's third day, the quarterback-needy Buffalo Bills could also kick Kolb's tires now that he's been set free.

His second season, with Norv Turner as his OC, was a marked improvement from his abysmal rookie campaign. He likely would have been able to turn that corner if he had Norv for a few more years.

Andy is that quintessential smart dumb nigga and has seemingly overused his athletic QBs (read McNabb's arm, Vick to a lesser but increasing degree at the end) to the detriment of the team. I remember when he head scratchingly decided to run a balanced attack with Garcia filling in for McNabb and it working well. With KC's running game, if he employs the same with Smith, I think it will be pretty successful.

the irresponsibility with which the trade for him was conducted. giving away so much value and money for someone who had proven so little, and this was AFTER most had stamp sealed Alex Smith as a non-redeemable bust, and at a time where you'd think that QB evaluation would be much improved from that in the mid 2000s. Arizona's leadership DESERVED to be fired for that shit. You have a top 10 caliber defense, a future Hall of Famer at wideout, and a team a few years removed from the Super Bowl and you fuck things up that badly for an unproven QB? Shiiit. Let's act like Alex had shit like that in place before Harbaugh and Co. showed up.

Just puzzled as to why a draft pick who was at worst a boat that would rise with the tide but never set back the franchise like the Kolb move did has drawn such ire.

Kaep is obviously the franchise guy but he doesn't have a ton of experience and leaves himself open to big hits. Tolzien has been around for 2 years and has yet to take a snap in the regular season. Getting a youngish backup QB with 21 starts under his belt brings some experience to the QB meeting room.

Although McCoy was thoroughly mediocre in his time with the Browns he wasn't a complete mess. Seems like he could be a guy who could protect the ball and wouldn't lose bad games if he had to step in for Kaep for a game or two.

Also, McCoy's situation kind of reminds of Alex Smith. He was a successful college QB who ran the spread option offense, then got drafted by a organization that was kind of lost at sea and was almost immediately asked to lead a West Coast style offense with hardly any talent around him. He's also a better athlete then most give him credit for and could at least run a lot of the same sets as Kaep even though wouldn't be nearly the same type of big-play threat. Of course some generic similarities doesn't mean Harbaugh can get anything out of him, but for the price I think it's worth a try.

Getting an experienced back-up for basically a 7th rounder and $1.5M isn't really an exciting move but it's solid.

The 49ers definitely have the draft capital to make a move like that but I wonder who they think is worth making that kind of investment in. If they could get get a lineman like Lotuleli or Floyd I could see it, but I doubt either of those guys will make it out of the top 10. After that group your looking at D-linemen like Sheldon Richardson, Sylvester Williams, Datone Jones, or Tank Carradine, and I don't see that much difference in these second tier guys. I'd rather wait and see who lasts till closer to the Niners pick and make a smaller move if necessary.

If their looking at Free Safety I see even less of a reason to move up. Vaccaro appears to be the clear number 1 safety right now, but if the 49ers are looking for a guy who be the last man back in the deep third and come up and support the run I could think of a half dozen guys who are comparable to Vaccaro. While they might not be quite as good I think you could get better value out of guys like Reid, Cyprien, Rambo, Swearenger, or Thomas.

Whatever the 49ers do, it should be an interesting weekend. I can't wait to see what Baalke will do.

1st round WR's seem to be such a crap shoot, we're still waiting to see if the Niners crapped out with the Jenkins pick last year I'm not sure the 49ers would want to package multiple valuable picks to roll the dice again. Patterson and Austin appear to be the guys who would go in the teens and both have legitimate question marks, neither is really a "can't miss" difference maker.

Harbaugh and Roman have shown a knack for adapting the offense to their talent but the 49ers haven't really seemed to value the WR position all that highly in the last couple years. They will need to add some WR's before 2014 but I don't know that it's worth grabbing one of the top WR's in this years draft.

I'm not sure that the 49ers needed to move up to 18 to get him, but they had the extra pics so I guess I can see why they would want to make sure they got their guy rather than wait around. I like that Reid seems to have a really high football IQ, I think once he gets working with Donatell and Fangio he can really grow into a great FS.

Now I'm just hoping the 49ers nab Tank Carradine with the #34 pick tomorrow and then a TE like Escobar or Kelce at the end of the 2nd. Throw in Honey Badger in the 3rd and I will be very happy with this draft.

Got good value at pretty much all the positions the 49ers needed help. I was glad that we focused on getting guys with pass rush ability rather than corners. A big deal was made about how the 49ers secondary got torched in the play-offs, but they had one of the best pass defenses in the league for most of the regular season. Things fell apart when Justin and Aldon got hurt, now there should be more depth.

Lattimore seems like a smart pick, I wouldn't be surprised if he is basically red-shirted this year. Leave him on IR to save a roster spot and make sure he is completely healed, then let him compete. Given Lattimore's talent level I feel like we basically traded a late 4th in 2013 for a 2nd in 2014.

The late round picks are basically camp fodder, will compete and push guys for ST spots but I think they will mostly be toast. Interesting start to the UDFA period, looks like the Niners have nabbed British discuss thrower and athletic freak Lawrence Okoye.

kyle and mario were out midway through, randy was never what we hoped he would be. and i believe mario and kyle won't even be back by the beginning of the season.

no excuses about if we had this or that player how we'd have fared in the super bowl but it would be nice if we could go into the postseason with the majority of WRs we started the year with.

a lot of this though is future thinking. mario's contract is up this year, crabs will be up soon, kyle as well. in the case we don't resign any or all of them, we have young talent to fill in the gaps.

overall, it's just great to have harbaugh and baalke running the show right now.

With Lattimore (assuming he fully recovers) I couldn't see us keeping Hunter with what he may get offered on the open market when we have lattimore and LMJ still..I could be wrong though of course.

And the more Crabtree emerges, I cant see us letting him go. Maybe this is more conjecture than inference..but 90 catches 1000+ and 9tds when we spent years without a good wide out would seem counterproductive as hell.

Culliver...i'm not sure on.

With the money the 49ers are spending on the O-line and what they will have to pay Kaep, I don't think they can afford to pay two different receiving targets big dollars.

Given the style of Offense we've seen the last couple years I think VD is more likely to stay, but Kaep and Crabs did seem to have a connection last season and things can change a lot in the NFL in 2 years.

Manningham is still pretty young, and hasn't hit his peak yet. He came on for cheaper than the Skins paid Morgan and isn't likely to get more money from anyone else until he puts together some monster seasons.

Crabs is finally earning his big money, I'm not sure on what he's going to do. I think he's going to give the 49ers a chance to sign him without breaking the bank, but he will want to be justly compensated. Kind of depends what happens with Lockette, Jenkins and dem...

Culliver will probably be at safety this year, which is supposed to be his natural position so if he beasts out, he'll probably stay. Otherwise, his distraction factor may not have him around in 2015

Even if Lattimore doesn't stick, Hunter and LMJ are too similar to both stay active on this roster for very long, IMO. But like you said timeiswhen, who knows, maybe having them both come in keeps the defense on edge with their quick bursts.

I'm still fucking giddy that we can even discuss such things. We have the makings of a dynastic run, provided we actually win some fucking titles of course. The overwhelming majority of our success has been homegrown and with 10 more picks + compensatory next year, that trend looks to continue.

Levi's is at least strong associated with the region and the gold rush so it ties into the team. Also good to have a stable a company which should avoid the issues the A's/Raiders have had over the last decade, I gave up on trying to remember what the Coliseum is called.

The only downside I see is being named after a jeans company will lead to many awful and obvious pants-related nicknames.

i'm more worried about the WR situation. either jenkins or williams needs to step up.

Asomugha's one-year contract with the 49ers contains no guarantees. While it's early yet to write him off in a suddenly shaky secondary, Asomugha is sitting squarely on the roster bubble.

They didn't use him last year because they felt they had better weapons. He has had some good practices and i'm not willing to throw in the towel. He was barely on the field when active last year. I'll wait to see him play a full season getting consistent reps first.

At least I hope that's the case. Trade McCoy, name Wallace as the backup with Daniels as the 3rd string guy. I think there's a good chance Tolzien would clear waivers and could be placed on the practice squad. But whatever they do please just don't lose BJ.

as much as it's a lack of confidence in the other 3. I mean I like what I've seen from BJ so far but I'm not ready to put a meaningful game in his hands... not just yet.

The thing I like about keeping both Wallace and Daniels is they can at least mimic what Kap does so the offense doesn't have to make major changes should he go down.

Nothing really happened on the first cut down day. Mostly just shifted guys we already knew were injured on to the official reserve lists. So the soonest Manningham, Wright, or Carradine can return to practice is after week 6. Okoye actually got waived but I have a feeling he'll find his way back to the practice squad on Sep. 1st.

Looking at who's left and healthy, I don't see too many controversial battles for the next cuts. Still a ton of WR's left but I think the top 5 of Boldin, Moore, Williams, Patton, and Baldwin are fairly safe so it's just left to Collie, Hawkins, and Hall to show enough to convince the Niners to keep 6 WR's.

Back-up QB competition could have some juice, but I think McCoy and Daniels are likely 2/3 with Wallace set at #1 on the 49ers speed dial should they need to pick up a street FA at QB during the season.

Jewel Hampton may still be pushing Dixon for the 5th RB spot but I still think Dixon earns his way onto the team through special teams. I still think Marqueis Gray is an interesting TE project, if the team trusts McDonald to handle the #2 TE spot maybe Gray can beat out Celek for a roster spot.

Any other battles people are going to be watching for on Thursday?

Seems like the biggest battle left is the long snapper. Jennings going will be kind of sad. The last man to have shared the locker room with Jerry Rice.

#6 WR is sort of academic since whoever it is will almost certainly not be active on game day. I'm guessing it's Hall.

Since Hunter looks 100% gotta assume they go with Dixon for his ST abilities instead of Hampton's marginally better RB skills.

I understand why the Niners wanted to get younger and cheaper at the position but it still hurts a little to see a loyal soldier discharged. He should get picked up somewhere, I can't believe there are 32 better longsnappers than Jennings.
