Kobe Bryant: 'This isn't working'
by ADRIAN WOJNAROWSKI | JAN. 22, 2013
CHICAGO – Everyone else on these Los Angeles Lakers had showered, dressed and bundled themselves to march out into the coldest night across the past two winters here. As the clock lurched past midnight in the losing locker room, the team bus gone, Kobe Bryant still wore his purple and gold jersey inside a tiny cubicle.

For some reason, he was holding onto one more night, one more loss, a little longer on Monday. He had marched past the Michael Jordan statue in the United Center, embraced Scottie Pippen courtside and understood he had never been so far away from those six championship banners hanging above him.

One more to go, and yet Monday night had been another cruel installment that Bryant no longer plays on a championship contender, that the parts, the system, the plan, is spiraling deeper and deeper into the abyss. Seven games under .500, four games out of the playoff picture and an unraveling in the final minutes of a 95-83 loss to the Chicago Bulls.

So far, these Lakers are a failure. So far, a bust.

"Obviously, this isn't working," Bryant told Yahoo! Sports.

It isn't working for Pau Gasol, who has lost his starting job to Earl Clark. It isn't working for Dwight Howard, who grumbled privately in the locker room over the truths on the stat sheet. Most of all, it isn't working for the Los Angeles Lakers, on course to be remembered as one of pro sports' biggest debacles.

On the issue of coach Mike D'Antoni stripping Gasol of his starting job, Bryant responded with a long, telling silence and smirk when pressed on whether he believed Gasol's benching made these Lakers a better basketball team.

On the issue of Howard's belief that the ball simply doesn't go through him enough on offense, Bryant rejected the premise.

"I've tried to go out of my way to get him the ball," Bryant told Y! Sports. "Sometimes I end up looking like an idiot, because I get up in the air, I've got a shot, but I try to find him. But he thinks I'm going to shoot, so his back is turned. I'm trying to think about getting him the ball a lot – take care of him as much as I possibly can. It takes me out of rhythm a little bit, but I'm fine with that. If that's going to help our team, I'm more than willing to do that."

When Howard did get the ball on Monday, he missed four of eight free throws. He let the Bulls strip him. He missed three of his five shots. His aggression seems to come and go, on offense and defense. Perhaps it's the back; perhaps it's something else.

"I've constantly tried to help him out, tried to talk to him," Bryant said. "Two o'clock in the morning, three o'clock in the morning. Texting him. Sharing reading materials. Anything to try and help him.

"He's coming off a major surgery in a market where it's just merciless; where there's demands and responsibilities of athletes. It's been tough on him."

Deep into the fourth quarter, within a basket, the Lakers crumbled to the Bulls. As one Western Conference assistant coach told Y! Sports, "If you just keep running your stuff, trust your offense, they will eventually break down on defense. You'll get what you want."

This speaks to D'Antoni's inability to cultivate an identity for these Lakers. Bryant wouldn't come right out and declare D'Antoni's system a failure, but he did speak to a need for the coach to find ways to flex everyone's strengths. D'Antoni has a long, stubborn history of forcing talent to fit into his system, and right now that is clearly playing a part in the unraveling of this season.

"We need to go back to basics," Bryant said. "We need to put guys in positions to do what they do best. We need to strip it down. Steve is best in pick-and-roll. Pau is best in the post. I'm best from the free-throw line extended down. Let's go back to basics.

"We've got to evaluate what's going on. Management is looking at it. The players are looking at it. I'm looking at myself. I'm a shooting a low percentage right now, and I've got to look at that. It's on me to make shots, but I'm having to make tough shots, getting the ball 30 feet from the basket and like that.

"Originally, teams would have to play our pick-and-roll coverage, which left me open on the back side quite a bit. But they've made adjustments, and they've decided to stay home on Kobe no matter what. So I'm trying to space the floor. I'm trying to do my job the best I can. I try to create opportunities. But most of them, are trying to take the ball to the basket with four, or five seconds left on the clock, trying to manufacture tough shots.

"Listen, no one is more critical of their game, of how they're playing, than I am. And right now, I've got to shoot at a higher percentage, have to play better. "

It was late Monday, and the No. 24 jersey still stayed on his back inside the arena where No. 23 won those six championships. Kobe Bryant has five titles, and this had been proposed as a season for him to chase his sixth. Bryant had made seven of 22 shots against the Bulls, gone to the free-throw line only three times.

"On me," Bryant would say again. "I've got to find a way to make shots."

Midnight passed, the Lakers bus had left the United Center, and still Bryant sat inside his locker and searched for solutions. Mostly, they were abstract, unrealistic and ultimately at the mercy of D'Antoni valuing victory over the validation of his precious system. These Lakers aren't pursuing a title, but merely the stabilization needed to secure the eighth seed in the Western Conference playoffs.

All alone in the United Center locker room, all his teammates gone, Bryant still hadn't peeled the uniform off his back. He chases ghosts in this gym. He chases the elevated immortality that comes with catching Michael Jordan. In the empty room, in the Lakers' spiral, there were no empty words about chasing a championship.

Another lost night, another embarrassing loss. Bryant stayed back, and let it wash over him. Those six Bulls championship banners dangled over him, and never had they felt so distant, so unreachable. Nevertheless, Bryant stayed in the still of the room. Coldest night of the year in Chicago, and Kobe Bryant showed no inclination to hustle out into the winter of his basketball life.

Sounds mad to me. Sounds like pure, unbridled hatred.

>It's beyond Kobestan, because true Lakers fans should have
>checked them a long time ago and faced reality...

We have, actually. We've called Kobe's shit many times, but it's more convenient to pretend we don't. It takes too much wind out of your sails or something. When we call out Pau on HIS bullshit? LOL. Guys like you come riding to his rescue in the name of "FUCK KOBE!!!"- but again, it's currently more convenient to pretend that this doesn't happen either.

>There are like 4-5 posts about the Lakers all related to them
>sucking ass and running around like Chicken Little

Which is why your post got locked, but keep pretending it was something else.

>FUCK LA

^^^MAD.

Cool. We've had a lot of great years at the expense of haters like you, so naturally you get it in when you can. Just remember to get it in *while* you can, because our history is pretty solid. These periods never last long with this organization. No other team rebuilds as quickly as we do and this situation will be no different.

True. I'm not a full time poster here so I don't know when jokes or serious. Lakers fans are a bit overzealous so I guess you were just giving it back to them.

And haha the Wizards won't win anything until Ernie Grunfeld is shown the door.

the Phils beat Pedro Martinez earlier that day/evening in an interleague matchup while in Fenway rocking an AI jersey.

There was some real promise in the air, then again I'd been drinking all day with a makeshift Philly reunion crew.

The city of Boston was strangely supportive of the Sixers at that time until you remembered we were playing the Lakers.

And B, I notice you still have that habit of adding a 'c' to every Fisher name whether it be Jeff, Derek, Eddie or probably Carrie huh?

Said it in another post, I can't party over injuries. That shit is just sad.

Now that everyone is back, I can take a good amount of joy in this first half of FAIL. But I do suspect that injuries have at least something to do with them being this bad.

I will say that most Lakers' fan have been remarkably aware this season, and will give them props for that. You could see this coming for a long time though.

I won't front and say that I saw this bad start coming. You're right, nobody predicted this. What anyone should have seen coming was how poorly Kobe would react to this type of adversity, and how his reactions would go over like a lead balloon. And that it would drag the whole team down with him. Not say that he's the sole or even the first reason this team has fallen apart, but he's not really helping at this point.

Also, a lot of people talked about how Kobe's contract was going to eventually kill this team. We all agreed, but he deserves it so what are you gonna do.

But you're right...he's not helping. He's not the sole reason this isn't working, but...yeah. He's bad.

if you read the rest of it, basically he says that teams know that the ball is going to be shot by one person only, so they stick with dude instead of leaving him open...

meaning, you have 3 allstars in Gasol, Howard, and Nash who don't have a double team and generally have an advantage on the court, yet...somehow...according to Kobe, his only job is to make shots...

...not adjust to the D sticking with him and drawing his man away to get isolation for one of his other teammates...

...not hitting the low post to draw his man inside to free up Nash around the perimeter or allow Gasol to kick out for a midrange uncontested jumper (which is one strength Gasol has Kobe failed to mention)

...Kobe is all about getting points and scoring, and if he can't do that he is like a deer in headlights on the court

and furthermore you loser, the screen and roll was a joke on the Lakers defensive woes as mentioned by some of your Kobestan homies on here. According to some, that screen and roll defense is a weakness and key to their woes...

HA HA HA HA HA

Fucking suck ass Lakers

and get that 6th ring alot sooner.

Magic Johnson, Kurt Rambis and Del Harris are turning over in there graves that this team can't be coached.

nobody is going to trade for nothing on that old, crusty, bum team.

there biggest problem is how to get rid of Kobe.

if he plays nice there might be a ring to get, instead of around the collar.

funny shit though. i looked at the lakers' rankings in different categories from last year in comparison to this year. extraordinarily similar, despite the total difference in coaching philosophies. i don't think d'antoni has been good or anything, but blaming him for their failures is comedy. they're just not good. remember, this is a team that lost 8 of 9 games in the second round of the last two postseasons.

the most glaring issues--they're terrible at creating turnovers and have too many of their own--were exactly the same as under mike brown. the only shifts have been an uptick in offense and a decline in defense, which are pretty much the result of coaching emphasis on personnel.

anyway, i've already had this discussion enough in real life, so it's very boring.

http://deadspin.com/5977956/after-last-nights-loss-kobe-bryant-kept-his-uniform-on-and-sat-in-his-locker-until-after-midnight

Here is the lede from Adrian Wojnarowski's story on last night's Lakers-Bulls game, which ended in a 95-83 victory for the Bulls:

Everyone else on these Los Angeles Lakers had showered, dressed and bundled themselves to march out into the coldest night across the past two winters here. As the clock lurched past midnight in the losing locker room, the team bus gone, Kobe Bryant still wore his purple and gold jersey inside a tiny cubicle.

Just let that image wash over you for a moment. We've always known that Bryant has certain sociopathic tendencies, but this is just weird and depressing. Imagine what it must have been like for the poor locker room attendants who had to clean up while Bryant just sat there, jammed in his locker, contemplating the brushfire that his season has become.

Later, still in the wee hours of the morning, Bryant sent out this terrifying tweet:

It's tough to blame Bryant for suddenly turning into Jack Torrance, though, because his Lakers team really is a miserable thing. Last night's game was unwatchable, a fact that had a lot more to do with the Lakers' ineptitude than it did the Bulls' grind-it-out style of play. Dwight Howard spent the night getting the ball slapped out of his hands while lurching around helplessly in the paint. Steve Nash made his usual, probing forays into the lane, only to find that there was nothing to be done once he got there. Pau Gasol, having been banished from the starting lineup, managed to shoot an air ball while engaging in his usual routine of floating around on the perimeter. Earl Clark played 35 minutes and shot a three-pointer. And of course, Bryant was left to heave ill-advised shots each time the offense stalled.

The Lakers still have 41 games left to play, and at this point that seems like bad news more than good news. If only we could go back to happier, simpler times.

that tweet is wonderful lol...

fucking sociopath

And his dreams are drifting away
Pau's eyes don't shine like they used to shine
And the thrill is gone when Dwight just whines

I'm afraid the masquerade is over
And so is love, and so is love
Kobe's love and so is love

I guess Dwight will have to play Pagliacci and get himself a clown's disguise
And learn to laugh like Pagliacci with tears in his eyes
Pau looks the same
Nash is a lot the same
But Kobe's heart says "No, no, you're not the same"

I'm afraid the masquerade is over
And so is love, and so is love
D'antoni's words don't mean what they used to mean
They were once inspired, now they're just routine
I'm afraid the masquerade is over

Love/Lakers

and the Nets literally shut it down as BS immediately...

I truly don't think the Nets would do Lopez for Howard straight up right now, and if they would, that's the best the deal would get... amazing because a few months ago it was Lopez, Brooks, money and a shitload of draft picks...

D12 and Kobe just don't seem to fit at all... I think Howard will choose happiness over money and leave LA in the offseason, never thought a player would give up that extra year but can't see any scenario where he stays unless they make the playoffs and compete while there

Isn't that guy one of Dwight's media flunkies? Kinda seemed that way during the whole Dwightmare. Guess Dwight still wants Brooklyn, I wouldn't do it if I were them.

I think Dwight always knew brooklyn was best for him... if he didnt sign that dumb ass contract in orlando last year that he didnt want to sign he'd be in BK right now...

if the Nets make that deal tho they lose Brooks and Lopez at minimum and probably can't afford Joe Johnson deal as it ended up going down... so they ended up better off.

Yea I figured he was. I think Nets management would do the deal. I wouldn't just because I'm not sure if it's his back or he's just interested in LA.

I mean, they are failing miserably too. Not as bad given the personnel, but they were WIDELY predicted to be at least a top 4 seed (and many people said top 2).

my counter-argument would be i knew the order of the 2-8 teams would be a crap shoot, and it would be a pile of teams that will probably lose to the heat. though i have to admit i thought the bench would be better than they've been and i didn't think the knicks would be this good.

still, these two teams are in different categories to me. the celts are a disappointment, the lakers are a debacle. i'm still in "the celts always start off slow" mode, which may be denial, but we'll see.

kobe is not behaving in a way that's conducive to the team, cool all agreed
but despite the struggles he's had over the last month that nash has been back
he's still having an above average kobe season
at what point does dwight have to step up and exert some authority on the team?
never? because it's "kobe's team"?
we saw bron take the needed steps to essentially take the heat from wade with his play on the court combined with leadership
why can't dwight do that at this point?
this dude is about to get a super max somewhere, eating up more than a 3rd of a teams cap space
former DPOY, MVP candidate, franchise player etc
and this muthafucker is barely being held accountable for what's going on with the lakers
the way dude acted to get out of orlando you'd think the magnifying glass would be more intense on his role in all this

At first, I thought...hmmm, he's staying quiet. He must want to stay, because we all know he's a diva and complains LOUDLY when not getting his way.

But now? Now I think he's leaving. Just play out the season, and go to a better situation. So, why complain? What would be the point of trying to instill anything in this team? Why would he waste his time taking responsibility, or leading, or...anything? He's gone.

Which sucks but it is what it is.

I honestly think he just doesn't care.

He's certainly not without fault here, and he deserves criticism but...he doesn't care and you can see that.

As soon as Kobe did the "it's still my team" thing Dwight was forever let off the hook. Kobe made it about him, and not the team right away. I don't see Dwight staying anyway. It's just a rehab season for him.

137. "For a self proclaimed basketball 'nerd', Kobe is pretty damn stupid"
In response to Reply # 0

The reason Dwight doesn't get touches consistently is because the offense (primarily Kobe) isn't patient enough to actually move the ball and change the angle of the entry pass. Opposing teams have been fronting Dwight a lot and instead of countering with a high-low, Kobe and Ron just say o well and try to go 1 on 1. Trying to give Dwight a couple more touches when you jump into the air and dude's back is turned is not only one of the dumbest things I've ever read but also means nothing because it does nothing to solve the systematic issues.

Further, all this mfer seems to talk about is offense. It's clear our screen-roll defense is absolutely broken (Hinrich is getting WIDE open 18 footers because the big is playing 5 feet off into the paint) and that the team doesn't even fucking talk defensively, that's basic ass fucking basketball.

I'm sick of this dude talking solutions and then completely missing the mark on what the problems actually are. If this dude still doesn't understand what the real issues are, it's a complete indictment of him and the coaching staff for not emphasizing them. Absolutely oblivious and that pretty much sums up why we suck: you can't correct problems unless you actually address what the problems are...rather this dude continues to harp on the same shit.

I think that was the best part. He seemed truly shocked that Dwight wouldn't be looking for a pass in that situation.

thing is, he could be scoring close to the same amount of points, more efficiently and filling the stat line by playing better ball with this roster. He should be getting at least 5 assists a game with two 7fters in a conference without any

Well he's averaging 4.8. He just needs to find ways to get them easier shots earlier and often. It's surprising because he and Gasol ran that pick/roll to perfection at one point.

Bernie Bickerstaff is a better coach at this point than Dantoni.

Kobe fed Dwight the ball at one point 19 times in a half. This ain't Kobe's fault. D12 is injured and pouting because he isn't the number one option. DWade wasn't always the number one option and he didn't bitch to the media after every game they lost.

Kobestani (y'all) are the maddest niggas on earth. Niggas mad they hero can't sniff a D-League roster. Niggas mad Kobe is the GOAT. Niggas' souls wince at Jordan on the Wizards. Niggas mad DRose ain't back yet.

Kobe re: D12

"I've tried to go out of my way to get him the ball," Bryant told Y! Sports. "Sometimes I end up looking like an idiot, because I get up in the air, I've got a shot, but I try to find him. But he thinks I'm going to shoot, so his back is turned. I'm trying to think about getting him the ball a lot – take care of him as much as I possibly can. It takes me out of rhythm a little bit, but I'm fine with that. If that's going to help our team, I'm more than willing to do that."

What kind of weird 7th grade shit is that? Am I really to believe that Kobe has gotten stuck taken shots where he JUMPED TO PASS to Howard and Howard had his head turned with any sort of regularity? What?

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

In response to Reply # 0

Well, it was bound to happen...Looks like his agent has set up a meeting with the Lakers brass...Info comes from a Spanish reporter that also happens to be in Pau's circle...(the translation is a bit jagged...but u get the idea....Shit is about to go down....)

link: http://blogs.canalplus.es/daimiel/

----

The most negative situation since Pau Gasol 's NBA player has reached a point of no return in the Lakers, at least while Mike D'Antoni is the coach, and that seems guaranteed until end of season. Gasol's professional relationship coach and has been a pulse from the first matches of D'Antoni on the bench, in parentheses liar dinner at Petros Restaurant in Manhattan Beach last December 19.

If we go by the latest developments Mike D'Antoni has lost the plot, if it came to South California with them in hand. A coach who puts a player, whoever he is, to substitute in a match holder and substitute the following in the third, within five days without medical advice through no defense, justification, authority or conviction . A D'Antoni was signed him to run a team with four untouchables totaling $ 75 million salary this season. First tried to play a player of 2.13 m. 32 years tall and seven meters from the hoop. Look situations Gasol shot in the final season of Phil Jackson and compare:

http://www.basketball-reference.com/...shooting/2011/

The decision to sit home to one of the four untouchables, to give discreet plan to play 24 minutes per game, is to waste the excess capital invested. D'Antoni has launched the cracking of the substitution of Gasol in Chicago because he knew after the defeat in Toronto to the situation and the results could get worse in the next twelve games. Nine of them are away from home and many rivals before class. D'Antoni has realized that it is not able to get more with what you have. He knows that his system is not flexible or adaptable to the two towers and laying Gasol wants to accelerate the handover process to see if a four or three and a half open (type Rudy Gay , Josh Smith ..) and at least one reinforcement perimeter can be attached to the playoffs carriage and thus ensured the start of next season on the bench.

Until a week ago Pau Gasol was committed, staying in encabezonado Lakers to overcome the situation. When he heard the Monday morning of his anger was multiplied substitution and approaches extent to which dragged on for days and his agent Arn Tellem , who has requested an interview with General Manager Mitch Kupchak . There is one month to the transfer deadline but time is running fast to the Lakers , their classification and because with every game, every decision and every press conference coach Pau Gasol can lose a potential economic value transfer and increase the difficulty for the same. And that is an incalculable injury to a franchise that lost the oremus in its calculations of the last two years.

Thankfully they have a 1st rounder in 2014, but if Dwight bounces, I expect them to trade Pau for 50 cents on the dollar and let Kobe ride out where the rebuilding will start.

the whole lakers starting 5 needs to be traded off, they need to re built and in a hurry.

nobody on the starting 5 deserves to be around because they going to stay a lottery team.

the west is better and they are on the verge at best being in the 10nth seed.

and after this mess nobody wants to play for the lakers. now the clippers are a different matter.

Lakers are yesterdays news and Kobe either begs to leave or leaves next year.

bottom line going to Party in SOUTH BEACH!! and loving the Lakers choking and looking Scobby Doo chasing ghosts of the past.

love Ungreatful Kobe looking lost because its OVA

As shitty as D'antoni is, and he should never coach again, this team wouldn't get much better the way shit has been.

Kobe's playing NO defense
Dwight ain't right
Pau ain't right
Nash ain't Nash

I mean there was always the thought of age and injuries impacting their chances at winning it all. But to be absolutely AWFUL? like not even fun to watch awful. They simply just play bad basketball. I just leave the game on and walk around the house while it's playing now. I guess it's a good thing to not have to stress off of it. but damn.

226. "Is D'antoni about to get fired? (swipe)"
In response to Reply # 0

* slightly misleading, but...wasn't there support for Mike Brown like RIGHT before he got fired?

http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/nba/story/_/id/8871522/mitch-kupchak-los-angeles-lakers-says-team-problem-effort-not-mike-dantoni

The Los Angeles Lakers already have fired one head coach in this disappointing season, but general manager Mitch Kupchak isn't placing all the blame for the team's 17-24 start on the current one.

"Without a doubt, we have utmost confidence in Mike (D'Antoni) as a coach," Kupchak told ESPNLosAngeles.com in a phone interview Tuesday from Memphis. "I think if you spoke to him, his vision on Day 1 was dramatically different than it is today. It's the coach's job to adjust and to make changes. Sometimes a player is just not going to fit. Sometimes a coach has to make changes and compromise in the way he's done things and I think that's what Mike is going through right now is just the process."

The Lakers have hit the midway point of the season riding a three-game losing skid as some of the promises made in D'Antoni's introductory news conference in November are starting to ring hollow.

D'Antoni claimed the team should "easily" average 110-115 points per game under his guidance. They've crossed the 110-point threshold just eight times in the 31 games since he took over, going 5-3.

The Herd with Colin Cowherd

ESPN NBA analyst Jeff Van Gundy dishes on whether Dwight Howard's value has been overstated, the criticism of Mike D'Antoni, Howard's personality and more.

More Podcasts »
At the time of D'Antoni's hiring, Kupchak said the new coach's system was "more suited to the talent" on the Lakers than Phil Jackson's Triangle offense, and yet several players have had a difficult time fitting in -- Dwight Howard has sniped publicly about his lack of post-up and shot attempts, Pau Gasol has balked at accepting his role off the bench and free agent acquisitions Antawn Jamison and Jodie Meeks have both had to endure strings of DNP-CDs (Did Not Play -- Coaching Decision) under D'Antoni.

Yet, Kupchak said D'Antoni's shuffling of the roster is evidence that the coach is willing to change and try new things in order to try to start winning.

"It's not like he started a week or two ago trying to figure this thing out," Kupchak said. "He's been searching for combinations now for probably six to eight weeks. Understandably, I think the longer the season goes the more is at stake and the bigger hole you dig, the more dramatic your adjustments or your take on coaching has to become. I think that's what he's doing. He's grabbing every rabbit out of the hat trying to look for something that works."

While Kupchak is continuing to support the coach, the disappointment of the Lakers being out of the playoff picture with 41 games left to play is wearing on the Lakers' GM.

"You don't want to get too emotional one way or the other, but, we're halfway through now," Kupchak said. "Quite frankly, we've dug a hole and I think it's frustrating for everybody. It's certainly not what anybody or everybody expected halfway through the season."

Kupchak singled out the Lakers' effort, or lack thereof, as the most frustrating part to see.

"I'm a little bit concerned about our effort," Kupchak said. "I'd like to see better effort on the court. When the ball is not bouncing your way, when shots aren't going in, you just can't seem to get a break, the one thing you can control on the court is your effort and loose balls and running the floor, defending, offensive rebounding. I think back to the Miami game and I have that vision of LeBron (James) diving on that ball at midcourt. That's effort. It's natural when things get tough to hesitate and be unsure, lose confidence. That's one thing that we can't let happen. We have to maintain our confidence and our effort more than anything has to be at an all-time (high) to get through this period."

More on the Lakers

For more news, notes and analysis of the Lakers, check out the Lakers Index. Blog

Kupchak is well aware of the Feb. 21 trade deadline looming if the team decides it needs to pursue a move if that confidence wanes and that effort fails to improve.

"We've got a little bit (less) than a month," Kupchak said. "Typically, it's unusual, although there was a trade today (between Memphis and Cleveland), it's unusual if things heat up five or four weeks out. Typically, as you approach the trade deadline, people get serious and they really begin to understand and know their team and they have a pretty good feel of what's out there.

"So, I don't think we're at the point where you say, 'It's time for a trade,' and a trade happens in 3-4 days. That's just not how this league works. I read somebody somewhere a week or so ago said, 'This is a deadline-oriented league,' and I think that's true even though there are exceptions. That's certainly one way to address the problem, to look into changing players."

What's tricky for Kupchak is that he's not convinced making a trade or signing a free agent would act as a cure-all for the Lakers' funk.

"Part of the frustrating thing about this season to date is that I just can't, or we just can't, put our finger on the problem," Kupchak said. "We mentioned a bunch of them and even getting through the injuries and the (roster) changes and the coaching changes and you just try look at the players and how they fit together, is there something that's missing? I could look at our group and nitpick and say that we could use something here or a better shooter there, but the bottom line is that the group as whole, we have not performed to the level of our ability.

"It's not like we don't have a player at a certain position and if we added a player -- an eighth guy or a ninth guy -- all of the sudden our record is going to go from 17 and whatever it is to 30-11. That's not going to happen by adding a bench shooter or a defensive player. You know what I mean? That's not going to happen. We're underachieving for other reasons, not because we're missing a bench player. Certainly you can add a bench player and become a better team, or hopefully a better team, but that's not the reason why our record is what it is. We should be better than our record says we are. But there's a saying in this league, and I'm sure you've heard this saying, 'You are what your record says you are.' "

The Lakers' record of just 2-7 over their past nine games says that the team is getting worse, but Kupchak believes it's just been more of the same.

"I'm not sure there have been recent struggles," Kupchak said. "We've struggled from Day 1. It's not like we played good ball and then all of the sudden the last three to four weeks, we're starting to struggle. We have struggled from Day 1 and it's frustrating for everybody."

That frustration will linger until the Lakers start to play up to their capabilities.

"We'll just have to figure it out," Kupchak said. "There's no end to this. It's not like if it's not figured out in a week it comes to a conclusion. It's just a process. We just got to keep on working at it and figure it out. It's basketball."

The revenue the team is going to lose out on this year will be significant....playoffs are obviously the cash cow. If you can get the right coach to harness this team (for next season, they won't fire D'Antoni this year...only way I honestly see it happening regardless is if it means Dwight will stay), get back in contention next year and make a run...that playoff revenue stream will be more than enough to justify paying three coaches.

of the new coach. At this point, could it be anyone but Phil?

That's $20M a year for the next two years and $17M for the third year, barring someone else hiring Brown'Toni before their contracts expire.

So you'd need a playoff RUN every year, not just a berth, a RUN. I don't see any guarantee of that. I would be very surprised if D'Antoni were fired during the season and really even after it. Year 2 would be more tenuous.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

To me, this is the money statement:

"Now, think about the mind-set driving Coach No. 2: He's basically saying, I'm here only because of my system. I can't actually coach. If you give me the wrong players for my system, it doesn't matter — I will keep using the system anyway, because Plan B would be coming up with a more inventive way to coach these guys. And I can't do that. I'm not good enough. So if it's OK with you, I'd like to go down in flames with my system.

That's what D'Antoni did in New York (cut to Knicks fans nodding vigorously), that's what he's doing with the Lakers right now, and that's what he'll be doing when he's coaching the Minnesota Lynx in three years."

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

i remember arguing wit ginny when dantoni first came to ny...bottom line is that he had his perfect roster in phx and they didn't reach the finals. (insert excuse about leaving bench that somehow is good for dantoni but doesn't work for ewing/knicks)

d'antoni will never have a roster like the one he had in phx. He'll probably never see a prime nash/amare combo like he had either in addition to prime matrix, joe johnson pieces too smh.

He'll never sniff the success he had in phx.

dude should stick to assistant coaching team usa and that about it.

Per the article, even his DEFENSIVE ASST. COACH (Gentry) said we don't know what we're doing on defense anymore

the only chance at salvation here. It was probably an out and out disaster waiting to happen but he knows how to define roles for players and he will get the most out of them. he might run them into the ground in the process, but the lakers don't care about that in most cases. if he could have gotten this year and next out of kobe, nash and gasol, what do they care what shape those guys leave in?

again, it was a long shot but he was the kind of guy they needed. someone who adapts and is demanding as fuck at the same time.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

It's fitting that we're discussing this stuff right after the Lakers lost to a Chicago team giving heavy minutes to Nate Robinson. Do you think Tom Thibodeau, defensive perfectionist and no-nonsense soul, actually likes Nate Robinson's game? Heck no. But he needs Robinson's offense, so he's using him. D'Antoni didn't like Robinson in New York, so he buried him at the end of the bench, unleashing him now and then out of desperation for the inevitable Nate-Rob explosion. Which is to say: If D'Antoni has flaws as a coach, one of them might be a certain kind of stubbornness that affects his rotation choices and strategy.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

The Lakers have some pretty obvious strengths: They're bigger than everyone else, they're blessed with three high-IQ hoop guys (Gasol, Kobe and Nash), and it's pretty easy for them to score. Their weaknesses are also pretty obvious: They're a painfully slow team, it can be clumsy having two low-post guys, their transition defense is horrific, and they can't guard anyone on the perimeter.

Guess what? If those are your weaknesses, you shouldn't be playing at the second-fastest pace in the league (which is what they're doing right now). The Lakers should be playing at such a slow pace, we should be having 'Nam-like flashbacks to Mike Fratello's excruciating Cavaliers teams. Instead, they swung the other way because I'M MIKE D'ANTONI AND THIS IS HOW I COACH BASKETBALL!

http://www.latimes.com/sports/lakersnow/la-sp-ln-lakers-meeting-20130123,0,5793715.story

MEMPHIS -- The Lakers needed to talk. So they did. Loudly.

They held a clear-the-air team meeting before Wednesday morning's shoot-around, with Kobe Bryant very directly asking Dwight Howard if he disliked playing with the long-time Lakers star.

"Guys went at each other a little bit," said a person who witnessed the meeting.

Coach Mike D'Antoni started it by saying he was tired of reading newspaper stories about players questioning his offense or wanting more touches. Bryant and Howard each fell under that category after the Lakers' lifeless 95-83 loss Monday in Chicago: Bryant said the offense needed to slow down while Howard expressed displeasure after taking only five shots.

D'Antoni then told the team to stop worrying about offense and start playing better defense. The Lakers are fifth in scoring (102.6 points a game) but 26th in defense (101.4 points a game).

He then asked players to speak up. Steve Nash went first.

Nash, in his first season with the Lakers, said he didn't care how they played, whether it was via pick-and-roll or fastbreak or whatever. He just wanted everybody to be comfortable in the system. It was seen as a sacrifice by Nash, who played four seasons under D'Antoni's run-and-gun offense in Phoenix and won two NBA MVP awards while doing it.

Bryant also spoke up, acknowledging he could be "hard to play with" and asking Howard if that bothered him.

Howard's answer was unclear, though he did not engage Bryant in nearly as vocal a manner as Bryant engaged him.

"He didn't go back at Kobe," said the person who witnessed the meeting.

It was not known how long the actual meeting lasted, but the Lakers' shoot-around went an hour longer than expected.

Howard was contrite with reporters afterward, saying he was sorry for demanding more touches two days earlier. The meeting seemed to have affected him.

"It starts with me," he said Wednesday. "I have to be more of a player out there on the court and not worry about anything, not complain. Just do what I do best."

After scoring only eight points on five shots against Chicago, Howard kept telling reporters to "look at the stat sheet" after the game.

"That was immature," he said Wednesday. "I shouldn't have done it.

"I've just got to go out there and dominate defensively and make it tough for teams. I just have to get back to doing that and not worry about the offense."

D'Antoni, for his part, told reporters that the team would "maybe slow it down" on offense. He reiterated his defense-first assessment.

“The focus needs to be on the right thing. Our defense has to get better," D'Antoni said.

The Lakers (17-24) are lodged in 12th place in the Western Conference. They play Memphis on Wednesday night.

Howard tried to hit reset on the Lakers' season, which hit its midpoint Monday.

"I think this will be the start of a new season for us tonight. Hopefully our effort and energy is where it needs to be," he said.

D'Antoni used similar words in saying the team was "restarting" its season last week. The Lakers beat Cleveland and Milwaukee but lost three in a row after that.

Kobe held it together to a point before he finally went nuclear right before that last season, but they both asserted themselves. Shaq would make his 'look at the stats' type comments to the media, but in game he'd tell people to give him the fucking ball.

Dwight can't even do that shit in a shoot around.

2008, Lakers made the Finals and got a piece that would help win 2 titles.

That year was a terrible year for Laker hate, the Finals aside.

This year? This has to be the best Laker hater year ever.

Kobe draining those clutch shots for the OT game 4 win (even though it was all predicated on a horrendously Donaghy-esque bullshit fucking whistle where the refs wouldn't give Steve Nash a time out when he was CLEARLY calling for one, which likely would have allowed Phoenix to ice the game and the series to go 2-2) which resulted in Kobestan ripping up any/all peace accords on the books and just fully rampaging, going on about Will E. Win and all that other nonsense with ESPN in complete compliance of the Kobestan regime at that point.

OF COURSE

'06 was the FIRST YEAR that they NBA expanded the 1st round to seven games, so the party came too soon. fast forward to game 7 where the Lakers are getting unceremoniously bounced (the Suns were always better, that's also why the refs stealing game 4 for Kobe was extra poetic -- they were just propping up a false god at that point) and Kobe went into one of his full-on sulks / full court tantrums in game 7 where he did outrageous things like actually passing to teammates in an attempt to embarrass THEM (*snickers*)

THAT

that was the salad years. this is like the wine-tasting tour in Napa with old college friends. yeah, it's nice and it's well deserved and sure we're having real fun, but it will never have the magic of the halceon days of NBA rule engineering backfiring twice in one series leading to the on-court tantrums of yore...

I've been a card carrying Kobe hater since at least 2000 and it stems from his overratedness. As I said in another post, overratedness is the ratio of your actual greatness to how highly you are rated at any given time. No one is denying Kobe has had a great career and has been a great player in the past, my issue is how highly he has been regarded. That was always the point.

Now, the post Shaq playoff (and not playoff) floundering was fun, but Kobe became sort of an endearing figure those couple of years. He tried so hard. 35ppg, 81 in a game. He was going out and earning it and falling short the way 90% of great players start off. It was all on him. He fell short of course, but at least he wasn't being carried anymore. Then came 2008.

The Pau trade suddenly put Kobe on another powerhouse and that Jordan bullshit was louder than ever. Kobe finally won an MVP and that bullshit was on full blast going in to the finals. I'm not discussing whether or not this happened, it did. That 'rated' portion of his overrated ratio was heavier than ever. The perfect setup for what was to follow.

Kobe in the finals:

GAME 1 Lakers Lose 88-98
9-26 24 points

GAME 2 Lakers Lose 102-108
11-23 30 points

GAME 3 Lakers Win 87-81
12-20 36 points

GAME 4 Lakers Lose 91-97
6-19 17 points

GAME 5 Lakers Win 103-98
8-21 25 points

Wrapped up with a 39 point loss in LA:

GAME 6 Lakers Lose 92-131
7-22 22 points on 31% LOL

Could you write it any better? Nope.

This is better than shooting 38% in the finals in 04 because he wasn't the man on that team and it beats 2006 because you can argue about his help.

Yeah, he won 2 after 08 (6/24), but that MJ shit was never quite as loud and that's always been the point.

EDIT: LOL @ piece. Any other fanbase recognizes Pau as a cornerstone in those runs. smh Kobestanis
