"Official Washington RGIIISkins Offseason Post.............."

Honestly, most of us probably need to take a day or a week to breathe but here goes........

Fantastic season. No one anticipated this type of progress, this fast. Most fans would have seen 8-8 as a success.

The Good:

1. RGIII - unbelievable talent. Can get it done with his arm or his legs.
2. Alfred Morris - absolute hammer at the RB position. He's like novocaine, given enough time (carries) he'll kick in and deliver.
3. O Line play - mind you, i'm talking about the play this year, not the talent. They played above expectations much of the year.
4. Drafted players contributing - outside of our dynamic duo, Cousins, LeRibeus, Hankerson, Kerrigan, Paul and Jenkins are all players in their first of second year who contributed and should be better going forward. Maybe we've learned our lesson.
5. London freakin' Fletcher - nuff said.
6. Kai Forbath - nice having a consistent leg out on the field.

The Bad:

1. Injuries - Carriker, Orakpo, Merriweather, Helu and Davis are all guys I'm hoping to see back with the team and healthy next year along with RGIII's rested and healed knee.
2. PED/drug suspensions - gotta cut those out. Way too many guys missing time over the past two seasons either for PED or some other drugs.
3. The Secondary - sheesh. I don't know where to start. Was it the playcalling or the talent? Seems like a bit of both, but we have absolutely nothing to be excited about at safety, and not much more than that at CB. Meanwhile former Skins Rogers and Landry got better when they left.
4. The Cap - might be a bit tricky filling in holes with the cap hit we're taking between this season and next.

Future:

1. That read option is nice but not a long term solution. Opponents will have a book on it by next season. And RGIII needs to be able to get it done in the pocket, cause he won't be young and fast forever. The read option needs to be a reliable wrinkle that you can throw in your gameplan, but not the main course of action. I say all this to say that while the OL played above expectations, we still need to spend whatever high draft picks/cap room we have on a stud or two that can maintain pass protection.

2. That WR corps has to come along. Garcon is nice (albeit hot-headed) and we need someone to emerge as a good #2. That and Davis needs to get his head together. He would be so invaluable to this offense if he can return to 2011 pre-suspension form.

3. The secondary - I'm for whatever helps us there.

Anyways, those are my thoughts. Add on............

he's only a second year player. Shined in spots this season, but clearly not enough.

You gotta wonder though what the hell is going on in practice that we can't get these dudes to produce. Robinson and Hankerson should both be further along.

I don't see his value much higher than fourth string at this point, with the drops and all. Other than that, he's not spectacular in any one particular area.

Although he seems to have a bit of report with Cousins, probably because they are main running with the second/scout team all the time.

If he's still shitty then we cut him in training camp or next year.

1. Secondary, all positions.

2. Right tackle (maybe Guard and Center too)

3. Wide Recievers. Garcon is "pretty good" and Fred Davis is capable of being great, although he's clearly an idiot. After that we have a whole lot of nothing. RG3 needs better WRs and better depth. Period. Josh Morgan, Aldrick Robinson and Leonard "Hands" Hankerson are not good enough.

probably going to be cut due to his salary ($10 mil. cap figure, saves 7 mil letting him walk)

I don't agree with it...but Carolina has 136 mil in salaries for 2013 currently...

He'll get the starting job first week...top 10 CB in the NFL when healthy....was on IR this season...

6. "O-Line first, then secondary a close second, followed by WR"
In response to Reply # 0

1. O-Line, because I want us to move away from relying on the gimmicky pistol offense. Everytime we were forced to run a more conventional offense this year, we were less effective (read: ineefective). The line benefited from the scheme and RGIII being such a dynamic player. But beyond Trent, we need to bolster this unit big time. It can be done through the draft, we just have to continue to make smart decisions.

2. I'm curious to see if getting Tanard Jackson back will help in the secondary. I don't think I read that we cut him, and I'm thinking they were holding on to him, because of the cap penalty hampering us from looking elsewhere this off-season. Hopefully, we get Jackson back, and pair him with a recovered Meriweather for an upgrade to our safety position. Doughty played the game of his life in the playoff game, and if we can use him like that, he would add some good depth (can't believe, I'm advocating keeping Doughty, but he showed promise in that last game, in that role).

3. Would love to find a sleeper/stud receiver from somewhere, to add to Garcon and company.

Guy, he has trouble in space and in coverage due to lack of atheleticism, but he's incredibly smart and reads keys very well. The skins weren't afraid of getting beat over the top by Seattle so they let Reed feast up front, the problem was that TE that would've been covered by the strong safety was running free in the secondary.

Damn his ban is crucial he must've failed the test right before the opener, I don't think they could take a chance on a kat who's going to miss all of training camp, all pre-season. That's a huge blow. Yea you may be right, he might have to go.

323. "End of the season post. After Loss to Seattle"

- If Griff was healthy they beat Seattle and there's nothing anyone can tell me to dissuade me from that.

- Ok to the big issue right now some folks won't feel me on this and i'm perfectly ok with that. Mike should've pulled Griff when his knee buckled on the back pedal with no contact. I said it then, i'll say it now. EVERYONE is arguing whether Griffin should've come out, guess what that shit ain't his call. Shanny clearly saw his FRANCHISE couldn't walk, not barely, not a little couldn't walk and yet let him go back out on the field. It wasn't the wince inducing bootleg either, it was his long ball interception. If anyone's ever thrown a football really far the difference is in your legs, with your plant leg, if you can't plant and generate power then you can't throw. Whenever Griff tried to throw hard his back leg came off the ground immediately. So I don't give a shit if he can't run, that's not his job. His job is to throw the football and if he can't throw time to get pulled. So all that if he comes out blah blah, you can't win I don't give a shit, that's not his call and as the coach you put the team above your star's wants. PULL HIM.

- Dude the much maligned defense played their asses off, they had some trouble defending the zone read, but honestly they handled it as well as anyone could with Marshawn Lynch beasting as usual. They played well enough to win. Reed Doughty earned his check yesterday with 10 tackles and 2 sacks, London 15 tackles and .5 sack. Those are two individually great games that will be forgotten in this Griff saga. This Defensive secondary after the bye played incredible and Haz, and Radio need to get some love for what they did. They started coaching to what they had opposed to what they were supposed to have. They did well down the stretch and I'm quite happy with what this ragtag group did, however No Madieu Williams next year is a good thing. Overall with what we had to work with, i'm not super upset.

-Great season and as long as Griff doesn't miss all of next year with a knee injury I think they've set up some great building blocks for the future.

1. Not only was it shitty for Shanahan to leave Griff in WHEN HE COULD BARELY WALK, it was just straight up BAD COACHING.

Really Shanny? You saw one-legged Griff, who had 40 yards the rest of the game, and you didn't think Cousins was a better option?

F*ck you, Mike.

2. I'm not sold on the defense. They went from "awful" to "mediocre", but Haslett has never been a great coordinator, and the roster needs a lot of work.

3. Handful of great building blocks, but this team still needs a lot of good drafting, and so far Shanahan hasn't hit on enough later-round picks for me. That's a problem when you gave up so much for your QB. You HAVE to hit on late round picks.

Well they got outcoached, Shanny Didn't coach that game as if he were coaching for the team, he coached it as if he were coaching for Robert, and that was the problem. He did a horrible job managing his team and the game. Coach and Medical staff have a duty to protect that player, instead they just waited until he broke.

As bad as the Defense was they were just as good as the Packers D that won the superbowl a few years ago, bend but don't break and opportunistic if the ball is on the floor or poorly thrown. They played that way and almost even with an ineffective Griff still had the team within striking distance to win that game. Down the stretch things came together and they played well. They were held together with duct tape and glue, and did their jobs. Are they less talented than almost all Defensive secondaries absolutely. Hopefully that can be addressed, maybe Tanard Jackson will show and Merriweather will be healthy. We've got to add a larger Corner out there somewhere. Dez Bryant is only going to get better and we're goign to need someone to combat against that. They need pieces and as of right now they don't have em.

They have a QB, and RB, a good WR not a great one, but a good one and hopefully if Fred is healthy a really good TE. All of this is dependent upon how severe Griff's knee is hurt. He may miss all of next season, I don't expect him to be Adrian Peterson and no one else should either that dude is a superhero and we should just hope that Griff can come back to where he was earlier in the season.

Especially as soon as one (or both) get hurt.

Bob doesn't need a ton of help, but he needs some playmakers to throw to.

Or at least guys who will catch the fucking ball.

I don't hate Josh Morgan, but he had 7 targets and 1 catch yesterday. Blame can go around, but he shouldn't be a central part of the offense with numbers like that.

He needs guys with consistent hands. Josh Morgan is the best blocking receiver we have, but that's not enough. He's got to make catches, especially when Hanky Hands drops 2-3 passes that comes his way. That 3rd down Hank dropped almost made me have a stroke.

We're still a team that is severely undertalented and we have to get more from what we have, but we won't have the money to really make any moves.

Hall is due 7.5 next year unless they cut him, which they probably will do, then there's like 14 free agents who's contracts expire today. like 11 of them played and played fairly well. I'm talking Rob Jackson, Lorenzo Alexander, guys like that. So we're in bad shape in terms of roster.

They're going to have to get creative or just do more with less.

With this years' tape he's not going to find the suitors like he might've at this time last year.

Especially because the team has to Resign, Fred, Lorenzo, and Darrell Young, not to mention Rob Jackson and a few other lynchpin players. Santana's contract keeps him on the bubble to getcut.

It will be an ugly off season

Moss should be a spot duty slot guy. I say should because given his mileage and size that's an ideal role for him at this stage of his career, despite him contributing significantly this year.

I'd love a Mario Manningham or Hakeem Nicks type to complement Garcon. I'll take a pair of less heralded physical and durable wideouts over a Megatron or Andre Johnson any day. (Can't say the same about Fitzgerald though, he's a badass.)

Said the same thing to my folks last night. We were hitting them in the mouth in the first quarter. Robert gets going with one more touchdown and we make it tougher for Seattle to come back. We held them pretty good for three quarters.

Agreed wholeheartedly here. I was thinking the same thing when he threw that INT. He's usually pretty accurate with the longball. I think the series before he started missing his targets and I kinda was upset. Soon as he threw that INT, I knew it was gonna be a long night.

They sure did. They kept the team in it when Seattle clearly had momentum. They produced turnovers and made some stops. The offense just couldn't get it done. Still need some major upgrades to the secondary as well as we should start thinking about drafting a good replacement for London Fletcher.

given your vocal admiration for Donovan McNabb, why do you dislike Bobby Griff, so?

They're essentially the same player, with the key difference being our city embraced the intelligent, humble, athletically gifted black quarterback while Philadelphia rebuked theirs before begrudgingly accepting him halfway through his tenure.

And Donovan is more likeable and humble, in my opinion.

Donovan's only crime is being drafted by the wrong city.

I WISH the Browns hadn't been enamored by Tim Couch's
whiteness....McNabb would have been beloved in Cleveland.

RG3 just seems insecure to me....listening to him and Luck, there's
no comparison: Luck is far, far, far, more likeable.

RGIII talking about "I'm the best option," throwing shade on Cousins.
Just don't feel like he's earned that. He all but said he would have
refused to be taken out of the game. He was so obviously injured
that no one would have criticized him if he had sat out. Cousins
came in the game and made three of the best throws of the game
immediately.

If Griffin damaged his LCL on a pretty vicious looking hit to the knee. A knee that had already had a previous ACL injury from college. They should have put him on the shelf right then.

If you think about it, what was at the time considered dodging a bullet with injury to the LCL instead of the previously injured ACL, should have been a warning to the team. Those newly damaged ligaments from that hit were probably used to help support the previously injured/repaired ACL from college.

If that went again, then...

all of this. It's the freaking Eagles. If you can't beat the Eagles with your backup QB, you aren't a playoff team.

http://www.hogshaven.com/2013/1/7/3846532/rgiii-injury-knee-redskins-robert-griffin-torn-acl

Mark Maske, a well-informed NFL insider for the Washington Post, just posted what we've all been hearing: RGIII has ACL and LCL damage.

Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan said Griffin is scheduled to be examined Tuesday in Pensacola, Fla., by orthopedic surgeon James Andrews to determine whether the test results show new or previous injuries.

This is unfortunate news and means RGIII's timeline for playing in 2013 is in jeopardy and could start the season on the PUP list. Of course, the team will give more information on Tuesday.

SB Nation's medical expert Dr. Ali Mohamadi, who ironically is a DC resident and life-long Redskins fan, provides insight on what to expect from here. His bio is impressive in case one has any doubts: Undergraduate degree at Yale, medical degree at George Washington University School of Medicine, residency and chief residency at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, followed by his subspecialty fellowship in Endocrinology at Johns Hopkins.

Dr. Ali: Recovery from combined ACL and LCL tears is a grueling and time-consuming process, and when you're dealing with a patient like Griffin with a prior history of an ACL reconstruction on the same knee, even moreso. The progression to physical activity is very slow to ensure that the grafts are sufficiently strong to endure motion and weightbearing. Typically, patients remain in a brace for at least 6 weeks, during which time they are advised not to fully bear weight on the affected leg and aren't allowed to fully bend the leg. Strength training and range of motion exercises progress slowly to a point where the patient has built up enough mobility and regained muscle to begin running, usually at 6 months after surgery. For most athletes, notwithstanding Adrian Peterson's amazing full recovery from ACL and MCL tears in about 9 months, many experts will tell you that it can take a full year for an athlete to feel like he or she is back to 100 percent function.

The added factor for Griffin is that he has a prior history of ACL reconstruction. For an athlete with no prior history of an ACL tear, the recovery is a daunting process to begin with and usually takes longer than for other knee ligaments. Studies show that while the risk of re-injury is about 5% among patients who have had ACL reconstruction, the risk for failure doubles after a second ACL repair, and this study didn't just look at athletes who endure the wear and tear that football players do. It doesn't mean Griffin shouldn't be able to play -- and play well -- after a second ACL reconstruction, but it does add a level of concern over the possibility that it could happen yet again.

shitty feeling I've had in my stomach for the last 24 hours. I feel like we just got a glimpse of greatness that we may never see again. Reminds me of Sean Taylor, in a way - difference being that there is a chance for RG3 to come back. But I think there's an even bigger chance that we're sitting here for the rest of his career wondering "what if".

Josh Wilson was on reddit last week.

http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/15wiru/iam_josh_wilson_cornerback_for_the_washington/

Check this one:

Q: Who is the most physical wide receiver you've ever played against?

A: Josh Morgan. When I was in Seattle I had to play him twice a year and twice a year in college. I'm so glad he's on my team now.

You're only seeing him if he catches or drops, Josh Morgan is the reason Griff ran away against Minnesota, Josh morgan is the reason First Round Talent Al has cut back lanes at the 2nd level.

Plus in the middle of the season before Pierre came back he and Santana were the most dependable receivers. Morgan got the dropsies against the seahawks, but I think part of that was because he spent all his energy trying to get away from Richard Sherman.

He's not nearly as bad as folks make him out to be.

Also Niles Paul is terrible, that's why he only returns kick-offs, because whenever they gave him an opportunity as TE to catch the ball he'd drop it. He missed blocks on the perimeter that stopped drives, that's why Logan Paulsen got so much shine. Outside of the first cowboy game he had a major case of the dropsies as well.

Resigned Sav Rocca. Lorenzo Alexander, aka that dude, probably signing with ARI.

In terms of my 2012 roster evaluation, I had the Redskins best players ranked like this:

1. Bob
2. Lorenzo Alexander
3. Kai Forbath
4. Sav Rocca
5. Alfred

6-53. Everyone else.

He wasn't a major bust here but he wasn't completely worth his price either.

I wish they would have restructured him instead of let him go because we sorely can use all the help we can get in the secondary.

Bring him back on the cheap, or just get someone else.

He wasn't changing the dynamic in the secondary one way or the other.

Except losing Zo is really unavoidable, because of the cap penalty.

Pierce was just the standard dumb-ass owner not wanting to pay the own home-grown talent.

Lorenzo should ball out, wherever he lands. Good for him.

The money spent on D-line depth could really be better served upgrading the depleted secondary or RT. With so little money to spend, this one has me scratching my head a bit.Not sure how they afford Talib, but I would rather have a cheaper more reliable option in either Cason, S.Smith, Arrington, or Huff. I totally can see Meangelo signing with Dallas.

Obviously I wouldn't have wanted to pay him, but the prospect of having a back that could catch passes out of the backfield is enticing. They tried it some with Royster but even at that position he seems under sized. Smusher would've given you even another layer to your offense, the lightning to Alf's thunder ( which is how Bush was always supposed to be used anyway.)

The way this is playing, our team has not gotten better. If anything we've gotten worse.

- We lost Zo which was huge and would've loved to have paid him a few years ago, but they never saw his value until it was too late. So he's gone, i'm sorry to see him go, but i'm glad he'll get paid. He did his time here when the teams were horrible so I'm not mad at him for protecting his future and getting that dough.

- We have less secondary now than we did at the end of the season, and NO money to pay for it. I'm not sure what they're going to do. Acquib Talib is out there, but he probably won't be in our range, plus he has discipline problems.

- That Morgan contract is probably looking really stupid right now. He didn't deserve that much, and the contract is hurting the team now. They made Santana take a pay cut and turned his 3.7 mil into a 1.2 but he can get all of that if he basically has the same season he had last year. So they say his incentives are "attainable". The Maras may have gotten us this year. They may have hit us in a way which we won't be able to keep our team together this year, but we'll be alright next year. So who knows.

- I really just want Griff to get well and come back when he's ready not day 1 like Ap. I want him at close to 100% not what he was doing in Philly or Cowboys game.

Man, I am probably one of the most negative people when it comes to my teams and I actually have a little bit of hope this year. No idea why though. The Ravens have basically dismantled all the important pieces to their team and other folks are overpaying to get that extra edge. Shoot even New England is looking more mortal now. I am kinda happy we aren't playing in the free agency pool this year.

>- We lost Zo which was huge and would've loved to have paid
>him a few years ago, but they never saw his value until it was

>he'll get paid. He did his time here when the teams were
>horrible so I'm not mad at him for protecting his future and
>getting that dough.

Hindsight is a motherfucker. I wish we could have paid him more. I wish him well.

>- We have less secondary now than we did at the end of the
>season, and NO money to pay for it. I'm not sure what they're
>going to do. Acquib Talib is out there, but he probably won't
>be in our range, plus he has discipline problems.

Welp...We will definitely be in the running for some secondary help in the draft. Hopefully we will have scouted well. Secondary help isn't looking too deep this year. Only thing I can say is that it forces us to develop who we do have, which is a good thing. The team should actually start trying to do what other teams have done and just go for draft picks instead of free agent signings. Too bad we don't have a first though (*sigh)

>- That Morgan contract is probably looking really stupid right
>now. He didn't deserve that much, and the contract is hurting
>the team now. They made Santana take a pay cut and turned his

>year. So who knows.

Hopefully the team finally learns its lesson with giving folks big contracts. They are paying a lot for somebody who isn't a Pro-Bowler. That money could have went to Alexander. Plus the cap is supposed to be getting smaller by the year. Gotta learn to be more frugal with money now. And Santana either really must love this team or he knows his worth to take another pay cut like that. In the role he is playing right now, I will definitely take the price.

>- I really just want Griff to get well and come back when he's
>ready not day 1 like Ap. I want him at close to 100% not what
>he was doing in Philly or Cowboys game.

Yeah I hope this man doesn't try to rush back. He's got his whole career ahead of him for that. He needs his legs. Not just for running either.

If it doesn't work, he better take the fall.

No plan for RT. No plan for the secondary. And we're eeking another year out of London Fletcher, otherwise the LBs would be hurting too.

WRs need a lot of work too.

Where are the late round draft picks?

What's the plan with OL, WR and secondary?

Last season's $18M wasn't a huge issue. This year it is, but that's only one year of serious limitation.

This is now Shanny's what, 4th off-season?

I'm just saying. The jury is still out. This is his ship. He takes the fall if it doesn't work.

Trading the franchise for Bob also isn't a get out of jail free card. It's putting together the rest of the roster that is the hard part.

While I understand there are some mistakes that he and the front office has made, how much more time do you give dude before you really say "Its not working out"?

I as a fan, am willing to be a little more patient only because there are actually some good building blocks he has put in place. I think showing panic right now might be jumping the gun a little bit. Its free agency. The team hasn't drafted anyone yet and we aren't done with our moves. Hell, we ain't the Ravens, we ain't completely gutted our team just to be below the cap. And while Josh Morgan is sucking up cap room, he is not dominating the payroll like Flacco. I dunno. I just feel like we aren't as bad right now as we could be.

All this is coming from someone who usually spells doomsday.

Personally.....

I hated the Shanahan-as-defacto-GM from the jump. (or any HC-as-GM for that matter)

In 4 years I haven't seen much to change my mind.

His ceiling as a personnel guy is mediocre at best.

Seems pointless to me.

It's like sticking with Alex Smith or Matt Cassel when you know you'll need an elite QB to win.

Mediocre GMs don't get it done.

In response to Reply # 89

first, the bad:

- the failed Willie Parker/Clinton Portis/Larry Johnson experiment
- the terrible Donovan trade
- lack of depth at the Safety and Corner positions
- the now-laughable debacle that was Rex Grossman and John Beck

but I think the good is pretty good:

- I for one will never criticize the RGIII trade. Ever. By the time we got to that point I hated watching this team and being a fan wasn't even fun anymore. So from my vantage point, 26 years old having never seen an exciting Redskins team that won consistently, I find this move to be even more inspired now than I did then.

- Maybe you overpaid for Garcon, but he's a killer and I like his type of receiver. If you aren't as divinely fortunate as the Lions or Cardinals then you'd love to have a Victor Cruz and Anquan Boldin hybrid like Garcon. He's physical AND fast. His questionable durability concerns me, but he's a difference maker on a team that went about a decade without one.

- Trent Williams. Ryan Kerrigan. Alfred Morris. Perry Riley. Jarvis Jenkins. Kai Forbath. Chris Neild. Josh Lierebus. Shanny brought these guys in and as it stands they're all affordable starter-caliber young talent. Trent will ask for a grip here shortly, but we'll give it to him because he's worth it. This is exactly the crop of quality youthful contributors that was absent from this club for the better half of my life.

and so by my grade he's right down the middle; unfathomably bad for the first two years and very strong last year. We were so very far behind thanks to Vinny, and Shanahan did himself no favors upon his arrival. I was startled that he appeared to not have scouted this team at length prior to his landing in DC. BUT, to his credit, he's done an admirable job as a GM post-Donovan.

I think a lot of the reason he takes criticism (not to say that it isn't valid in many cases) is that he doesn't endear himself to the local media or fanbase AT ALL. He's the anti-Tomlin, the anti-John Harbaugh. Shit even Belichick will sneak in a sly remark from time to time that yields a couple chuckles in the room. Not Shanny, he's a dick who couldn't care less about the reporters grinding on the beat or the fans who have stuck with this team through these last ten years. He seems not at all mindful of everyone outside of his organization, and as a result I think that makes the spotlight that's on him especially bright at times.

Good GMs are made by finding later round starters. The first round picks are the easy part.

Morris is the only significant late round pick he has found.

He didn't draft Riley (That was cerrato I believe). Jenkins hasn't shown much (yet). Neild, Lierebus & co are just warm bodies.

In response to Reply # 87

>Where are the late round draft picks?

Alfred Morris set franchise rushing record as a 6th rounder. Late round picks don't normally equate to starters, not sure what you mean by this?

>
>What's the plan with OL, WR and secondary?

The O line while the second weakest unit on the team does not require premium talent under the zone scheme. He drafted 3 last year Compton, Leriebus and Gettis and still got his stud late round RB, franchise QB, and a BACKUP QB that won games for the team as rook. you think it is stretch to assume at least one of the 3 lineman become starters by 2014? I agree WR will be a huge question mark next season. the Morgan contract was awful. Secondary has to be addressed in the draft, and I will be surprised if we don't land a vet like Winfield or Talib. Would you rather them have paid Hall and taken that huge cap hit? I have forgiven Shannahan for his past draft/personnel mistakes now that Allen is aboard. I think there is a plan in place, but it is severely hamstrung by the NFL cap penalties.

>
>Last season's $18M wasn't a huge issue. This year it is, but

you don't think it will have ripple effects for the franchise the next few years?

The Cowboys are even less organized than we are/were

The Giants talent is going to start aging, and we all know they aren't gonna pay Cruz what he's worth next year.

The Eagles don't have a QB and their talent isn't anything to write home about either. That's a rebuild project.

I mean I don't think it's all daffodils and roses over here but we're young and we've got a guy who's likely to be the best QB in the division in two years time. I don't think our current spot is as bad as it looks.

The challenge is keeping up with the Niners, Seahawks, Falcons. Those three are in great shape.

And while I like him, he's not a franchise RB like Steven Jackson or even a guy like Michael Turner in their prime.

Also RB is one of the easiest positions in the NFL to find solid production at.

Obviously Morris was a great draft pick, but that's the only one.

I have two points:

1. great GMs are made by creating value, by finding starters after the second round. I only see one starter so far, and Shanny has had 3 drafts. There's no guarantee the linemen you mentioned will become starters. They're all projects at this point, none of whom have really threatened to start. Could they? Maybe. Will they? I wouldn't put money on it, would you?

2. The trade-for-RG3 plan only works if you find starters elsewhere, besides the 1st round. Shanny isn't holding up that end of the bargain.

Look, is Shanahan an embarrassment like Vinny Cerrato or even Joe Gibbs? No. Will he ever be a "good" GM who builds a regular post season team? I don't see it.

He has yet to win a single playoff game with a team he was GM of.

98. "RGIII cleared by doctors, team wants to extend Orakpo....."
In response to Reply # 0

Taking another step toward achieving his “All in for Week 1” goal, quarterback Robert Griffin III received clearance Monday to practice when the Washington Redskins open training camp Thursday.

Less than seven months since doctors repaired the right knee ligaments he tore in a playoff loss to Seattle, Griffin passed three extensive tests to receive the green light to practice, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.

Griffin announced the news via Twitter when shortly after his final workout, he wrote, “Doctors cleared me to practice. Coach is going to ease me in. Thank you for your support & See you in Richmond.”

The plan is for Griffin to open camp as a participant in any positional and seven-on-seven drills. However, the team will hold him out of any 11-on-11 portions of practice initially, and it remains unclear how quickly Griffin will progress to full participation in practices.

Thursday will mark the first time since his injury that Griffin will be permitted to take part in an official practice session. During the spring and summer, Kirk Cousins served as first-team quarterback, while Griffin threw passes to fellow rehabbing teammates such as wide receiver Pierre Garcon and tight end Fred Davis.

Griffin said late in the spring that he believed he could return to full capacity by the start of training camp — an even earlier target date than the regular season opener Sept. 9, when Washington hosts the Philadelphia Eagles. In mid-February, Adidas released a commercial in which Griffin proclaimed his intention of returning from the knee surgery by Week 1. It would mark the second such comeback of Griffin’s career. In 2009, as a sophomore at Baylor, he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in the same knee. He recovered and put himself on the national map the following season, and then won the Heisman Trophy in 2011 before being picked second overall in the 2012 NFL draft.

Throughout this offseason, Coach Mike Shanahan, James Andrews (the orthopedist who performed the surgery and subsequent examinations), teammates and family members have relayed glowing reports of Griffin’s progress.

But as team’s offseason practices wrapped up in the second week of June, Shanahan stressed caution and said that, despite Griffin’s optimism, the decision on the timing of his return rested with Andrews.

Griffin met periodically throughout the offseason with Andrews, and he did so again early in July. The doctor was expected to examine Griffin on Wednesday — the eve of training camp — and then make a decision, but he instead evaluated Griffin in back-to-back workouts late last week. He recommended the Redskins clear Griffin to practice, said a person who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to speak for the team.

Wanting to exercise additional caution, Shanahan opted to wait another couple of days. On Monday, he put Griffin through his own workout, which featured a series of quarterback-specific drills, the person said. Pleased with Griffin’s execution, Shanahan granted clearance and told the quarterback he planned to bring him along gradually.

Griffin avoided opening training camp on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, which would have kept him on the side during practices and on the side until medical personnel deemed his knee strong enough.

Now, however, the quarterback can begin to rekindle his chemistry and timing with his receivers, tight ends and running backs right away. It remains to be seen how much Griffin will play during the preseason. Washington’s first preseason game will take place Aug. 8 against the Tennessee Titans.

The Redskins declined to comment on Griffin’s announcement, saying that Shanahan will address reporters Thursday in Richmond. Griffin is scheduled to address media members there Wednesday.

Redskins note: The Redskins are intent upon extending the contract of linebacker Brian Orakpo, according to a person with knowledge of the team’s plans. Orakpo is entering the final season of his current contract, and the person, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly, said team officials are hopeful of striking a deal well before Orakpo would be eligible for free agency next offseason. It is unclear, however, if the two sides are in active negotiations.

When Andrews' opened up AP's knee he said the ligaments looked as healthy and fresh as a child's (literally). He said Bob3 had the same thing.

With how competitive and focused he is, we all knew he'd be back.

Won't help my blood pressure every time he plants though.

I'd extend Orakpo if it was a good deal I guess. Defense is hurtin' for playmakers these days.

if you wait through the year and he balls, you'll be forced to over pay him. Or the worst case scenario is he leaves altogether.

He isn't that great of a player but it makes sense to just get it done, lock him in, and pay something somewhat reasonable.
