RG3's career is not over.....chill the fuck out. Plenty of players have put it on the line like this. He'll be fine. You are some thirsty ass dudes. I know it's been a WHILE since you seen a Skins playoff game but calm the fuck down. You didn't have a problem w/ him playin last week to get you in the playoffs.

In response to Reply # 33

if i'm a sk**s fan, i'd rather have a hobbled RG3 in the game getting that playoff experience-- win or lose-- than a healthy kirk cousins. cousins ain't taking y'all to the super bowl next year, RG3 very well might. the quicker bob builds up his playoff resume, the sooner he starts bringing home rings. that's how it works.

steelers got blown out in the 2004 afc championship. rookie ben played terribly, threw three picks and fumbled, had no way of knowing his practices had been taped, and would've been benched by many coaches. he wasn't. finished the game, came back the next year, destroyed the broncos in the AFC championship like a vet, and won the super bowl. you have to get your young franchise QB those playoff reps. can't duplicate it in practice.

it didn't end up going well for shanahan in this instance, but that's the risk. he took it and he was right to do so. you'll thank him later. the bootlegs and roll outs he had bob running are another story.

Nah....This is not about any of that...

I'm a Bears fan and even I can see that the decision to play RGIII was too much of a roll of the dice...

The issue is this...He's young...He's the franchise...He's not a Vet where you can ride the wheels off because you are not sure he will be able to reach a certain height again...U have to think about the future of your rookie QB that has transformed D.C. and made the Skins a true player in the NFL again...

This is not some put some dirt on it and go play situation....

It was a dumb decision to play the kid when the doctors were giving him shade...Plain and simple...

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

after he aggravated his knee in the 1st quarter, they took him in for
an evaluation. they let him come back out on the field

that had nothing to do with Shanahan, and if it did, then he will be exposed

In response to Reply # 0

Same people shitting on Cutler last year are shitting on Shanahan now.

Same people who thought Byron Leftwich was a hero for having his Olineman carry him down the field think RG3 should have known to sit out.

Basically the rule of thumb with sports fans is this:

If you're injured and you play and win you're a hero
If you're injured and you play and lose or get injured more you are dumb
If you're injured and you sit you have no heart.

fantastic accomplishment in winning the division
you now know you have an A level backfield in Morris and Griffin
however if he has a season ender, he's out all next year. which means you don't see him on the field til opening day 2014.

for who? for what?(c) Muddy Watters

not to mention from a purely business standpoint, the skins value as an org might go up 2-300 million over the next 10 yrs based on what he does.

and you wanna risk that right today? the fuck for?

Your spinning his traits negatively to fuel your nascent agenda but RG3 was merely being persistent in the face of adversity and showing supreme confidence in his abilities.

Shanny, as the coach, should be able to see through that though and temper the potentially self-destructive motivations of his players. He's surely had other players tell him they're the best option at their position and they're ready to play, even when they're not.

I'm sure he's pulled lesser players but he knows the Skins ceiling is much higher with RG3 than with cousins so I think he believed what he wanted to believe in this case.

he slim. He bound to get hurt.

No qb will last running like that.

His best bet is to become a better passer. He sucked as a passing qb today and most of the year. His passing yrds/game this season were paltry. I dont want to hear about his completion pct when his yards are that low.

He is the new Vick. Smarter yes but he still relies on the run way to much. Probably will never play a full season and I'll take a film room rat over swag player any day.

He is a straight line runner, he doesn't have a whole lot of elusiveness and clearly isn't built to take alot punishment... but he's more accurate a passer than Vick ever has been (except maybe 2011).

I actually like cornball brother, but i thought Vick (or hell, Cunningham) taught us not to make NFL cases for quarterbacks based on their running ability. Great highlights, but it still seems to have a ceiling.

the game is definitely changing, but anybody doing more running than steve young did is still putting their team at a disadvantage more often than not.

and his awkwardness when it comes to getting down. He's more of a sprinter than a runner because he runs tall and really isn't in the position to make all sort of juke moves. When he's running, he makes one cut and then it's off to the races.

Truthfully, Vick is the better runner ... in terms of elusiveness and likely flat out speed.

My primary point, though, was that Griffin is far more accurate and presents a more complete package than Vick has ever done outside of the 2011 season. Hopefully we'll be able to utilize that more in the future because he's just not built for the punishment he can get by being one of our primary runners.

Rob is a great runner....but not necessarily a football runner. He runs in a way that can/will/has get/gotten him fucked up. No Redskins fan could possibly want him to approach 1000 yards rushing every season. He'd be done in 5 years attempting that many runs.

He takes a big hit every game because he hits the speed bust all day everyday which limits your lateral movement. Its simple physics.

And lol @ a qb in the NFL rushing for 1k a year on a regular basis.

try to explain to me what Shanny did wrong.

Play RGIII?

Play RGIII after the first quarter when he stopped playing well?

Nah, seriously, what'd he do?

Because I told y'all awhile ago Shanny's method of grooming this kid was short-sighted but that just meant I thought he could have actually had him making more than one read per play and/or throwing the ball at least 25 times a game.

But what, exactly, are you mad about?

that should have been the time to pull him.

But that last play looked worse than it really was I think...anytime you have a lower leg injury the most painful think you could do is to try and pick something off the ground.... RG's knee just wasn't strong enough so it gave way......not sure it did any more damage..but we'll see..

thing is.....the kid uses his legs a lot....in the pocket and out.it's not worth risking the thing that made him such a playmaker just for 1 game..

not worth it at all..

He had a great season though....hate to see it end like that.

that's all their really is to it.

If he was okay to be out there last week & in this game in the first place, then he's playing & that's it.

If I'm picking quarterbacks, the #1 thing they need to be able to do for me above all else is be there to take the snaps.

Luck got his ass kicked way worse than RGIII did today.

But he's built like a fucking horse & despite him having ability to move with his legs he's not using them as a weapon to rely upon.

Nor is his coach scaling back a playbook & letting him do that anyway.

I been telling all these gassed-up Skin fans that they need to start wanting their quarterback to play more like one if they want the long-term results, they looked at me crazy.

But nah, let that kid be back there throwing until his arm falls off rather than actually be relying on an undersized frame to try to out-quick opposing NFL defenses.

Shit is a long-term losing option.

But don't now all the sudden get mad at Shanny for actually putting him in a game he & his team needed to win.

I didn't see any of these cats in here crying before about it & I don't wanna hear their shoulda-woulda-coulda shit now.

I know all these Skins fans here got mad at me when I said it in their posts & eventually just decided 'fuck do I care for? this ain't my fight' & bounced because it just made it look like a bitter, hating Eagle fan but I actually always respected the way Andy was able to bring Donovan along as a real quarterback for the long haul from the jump.

Shanny ain't even got the time in the game left to make that kinda commitment & it shows, he treats him different then he did all those cats in Denver.

But when I was in DC last weekend with folks puffing their chest out about RGIII's # of picks versus Luck's I had to stop to ask if they realized they were barely even playing the same sport in terms of what they're asked to do.

Luck threw something like 250 more times than RGIII. Without a net. Sometimes without a coach.

RGIII can take that Rookie of the Year all day, he earned it & it's his.

But if I'm a Skin fan I want Shanny giving him the chance to run real plays that will become bread-and-butter long-term & I don't want my QB-of-the-future running for 1000 yards.

That is a proven, faulty formula & RGIII has the ability to be far more than that.

He spent the rest of the season sliding and jumping out of bounds.

As could be expected, he learned his lesson.

The knee injury came on an attempted dive. It's not like he kept making the same mistakes over and over again.

Here's my point:

The idea that a QB carrying the ball is subject to worse hits than a QB getting pounded in the pocket seems completely illogical to me.

How many times per game will he get hit in the pocket? Lets say 5-10, and lets call them necessary hits because he's a QB in the NFL and he has to throw the ball. Say he runs the ball 15 times a game and doesn't get out of bounds or slide for half of them, he's still doubling the number of hits he takes in a game. Why you think it's a good idea for him to get hit more often baffles me. Of course, Snyder's god awful field seems to be the thing causing the injuries, so what do I know.

I'm saying, let's not overblow the amount of dangerous hits a running QB takes over a pocket QB.

Life is plenty dangerous for pocket QBs. Ask Tom Brady or Peyton Manning.

The skill of your offensive line or the shittiness of your OC (Mike Martz) is a much greater threat to your health than whether you have 10 designed runs per game.

RG will be fine. He got a concussion early on because he was a rookie and didn't know what he was doing. As the season went on he got safer and safer on his runs. Sliding at the first down, or getting out of bounds instead of fighting for another yard.

Unless you think he's incapable of learning (a dumb prediction to make but go ahead), he'll be just fine in an offense because he's got GREAT potential as a passing QB, and 10 runs a game isn't going to end your career if you're sliding on half of them.

Sorry.

Is there risk? Yes.

Is it career ending and counter productive? No.

Not if, unlike Mike Vick and Vince Young, you're actually a skilled QB.

both of those guys have basically had one major injury that kept that out in a decade, compare that to time missed by QB's who are asked to run from Randall to Vick.

A franchise quarterback shouldn't have 10 designed runs per game in the NFL, it's a waste of your most valuable ressource.

eh, I still saw some nasty hits including the one by Ngata that sorta instigated all this.

au contraire, I long said he's capable of learning more than what he's been given but instead they're satisfied with having him make one read, throw 20 times a game & risking him with extensive rushing.

he'll be just fine in an offense

The next guy to carve out a title-winning, consistently healthy career this way will be the first but glad you're unconcerned.

If I were a Skin Fan I'd rather Shanny get to the business of making him a Quarterback over a Randall-like 'Ultimate Weapon' type.

But that's me. A guy whose actually seen this movie before firsthand as a fan a few times now.

Not in skill set nor in career predictions.

But if you do, we'll just have to disagree.

I see RG3's potential and the offense they were able to run this year, and I am completely comfortable with the future.

The only exception is if he didn't learn how to slide, but he's already shown he has.

In a GOOD offense, with RG3's skills, I am fine with less than 10 rushing attempts per game.

Just because Vick or Randall or Vince Young weren't good enough to do it, doesn't mean I'm putting RG3 in that box.

running for 1000 yards or throwing only 20 times a game.

That's the bottom line.

He's a quarterback, eventually you need to get to a point where he's given more responsibility as a passer & asked to make more than one read per play while also scaling back the rushing dramatically.

That's what consistently healthy, Super Bowl caliber QB's do.

well, most times you should be able to brace for impact if you get rid of the football in a timely fashion & have good pocket awareness.

mobile QB's are more susceptible to injury long-term & take more 'non-QB-type' hits while running outside the pocket at which point they become a running back.

I mean, that should be fairly obvious.

A QB with a good OL?

And a good OC who doesn't get him killed like Jay Cutler or dipshit Steve Spurrier?

If you look at all starting QBs year in and year out (including ones on shitty teams), I'm not sure the data exists that proves that running QBs take more injuries.

I'd be open to PROOF otherwise, but a sample size of 3 isn't it.

I can't think of a single one (outside Cam but that's so far thru two seasons plus he's much more built for it than a guy like RG3) that didn't miss signifigant chunks of multiple seasons.

The guy's a quarterback. Shanny should be working towards letting him play like one more often.

- I understand that ball players are competitors and that they're never going to bring themselves out of games if they're hurt. I also get that if they win while hurt they're lauded exorbitantly.

- I understand that Griffin probably should've came out. I understand that he clearly wasn't well and that he was not only fighting a losing fight in that game itself but potentially damaging his future as well.

- I place the blame on this solely on Griffin. Shanahan trusts his players and they've proven they trust him. He trusted one a bit too much and it cost them. Griffin should've been accountable and, again, I understand fully why he wasn't.

- What I'm not sure everyone here is understanding is the repercussions of him leaving the game with the lead and then them losing. Then there's a backlash, then everyone questions his mettle, questions his ability to "lead" and his standing in the locker room. This is the same guy who told Tony Romo to keep his head up. Clearly he's obsessed with not losing and with not being able to lead.

so really every scenario is a loser. Keep him in and win but risk further damage? Lose for the future. Keep him in and lose the game? Lose the game and for the future. Take him out and lose the game? Lose the game and spark controversy.

This is a complex thing and ultimately I think I would've done the exact same thing in Mike Shanahan's shoes, as poor as a decision it appears to be in hindsight.

when your franchise QB reinjures himself, and the rest of the roster is a couple good young players and a bunch of journeymen, then you're screwed.

At that point the ride was over and nothing else really mattered.

That's what I see most real Skins fans feeling today.

Season ended by injury. Shit sucks.

Exhibit A on why the Redskins future is brighter than the Cowboys. A rookie on one wheel beat our so called franchise QB in a winner take game for the division & then comforted him like a 2 yr old baby after he choked yet again...

The sad thing is if Romo ever doesn't choke (picture that) Cowboys fans will think his that will somehow erase all the choking he's done up until this point..

Disgusting..

Lets be really real honest: Redskins overachieved this year thanks in large part to RG3, but they were pretty clearly only going to win it all if multiple natural disasters struck across the league. They were ahead of schedule by making the playoffs, more a product of how SHITTY THE NFC EAST WAS. The thirst in DC for something good to happen might have gotten to Shanny's head, and RG3's confidence/ego (however you see it) should have been put in check, but the ownership of that franchise has proven nothing over the years to be anything other than nearsighted and incapable of planning for tomorrow.

But it's not the end of the world, either. He's young, athletic and dedicated to training, which means rehab+modern science=almost as good as new. Besides, that's the reality of the mobile QB: sooner or later, you're going to get hurt. Badly. It's the NFL.

Ravens game.

Face it, THE SKINS WERE NOT A SUPER BOWL TEAM.

The Giants collapsed, the Cowboys continue to disappoint, and the Eagles are horrible.

That said, you were not going to win the super bowl with RGIII at the healm on one leg. So what do you really gain?

He's not a 10yr vet trying to get it in one last time with a broken finger that he can tape to another one or bruised ribs he can put some extra padding on. He's a dumb rookie that could harldly walk on that knee at multiple points in the last 3 games trying to be a hero.

Pack it in, sit down, and get it together for next season. You have a great career ahead of you (if you're smart), but you're done for now. That's what the coach, the owner, and any self respecting veteran player on the team should have told him.

Yeah, y'all won. Gotta give you that.

But the 'Hawks were playing dirty, pushing RGIII after the play and talkin' shit waaaaaaaaay before the game. Reports of y'all already having your bags packed for Atlanta and all that.

But y'all won. And no, to my knowledge, we've never beaten you in the playoffs, but then again, y'all have never won the big one, much less the three we have, so I can live with that for right now.

Good win and good luck.

I didn't hear about any of this but I'll chalk it up to confidence. As far as shit talk before the game, the only thing I heard was directed at Sherman from Golston. I don't know how/where/when the bad blood started betweeen these two teams but it's been there since last year.

It was clear after he came up limping during that second scoring drive that he was struggling hard to stay out there, and he had by that point delivered a nice lead that you can use a ball control scheme with Cousins and Morris to protect.

when he got injured, came out for one play, and then came back in...

I was like "nah son, he's done". Then he hobbled his behind back off the field and Cousins did his thing.

I never believed that they were honest about his injury from the beginning. Anyone who saw the replay over and over and over again could tell that.

But whatever, he sat for a game, and then came back and was gimpy still. He pushed thru it, and that's commendable.

But after he went down early in the game yesterday, it was clear, again, that he was done.

The first two drives his knee gave him enough mobility to run their offense and in those first two drives they ran up and down the field as if the Seattle D wasn't there. When Griff got hurt with no contact and his knee buckled at the end of the first quarter and it was clear he couldn't walk that's when I said pull him out. Everyone kept saying his knee was heeling, he clearly was a shell of his pre-baltimore self, but he was still getting the job done, but after that? He was injured and should've been pulled.

He couldn't defend himself, he couldn't plant to throw the ball with any velocity, he couldn't do anything. Hence why they only racked up 74 yards the rest of the day.

Ya'll sitting up here acting like its wrong to call for a backup when your starter is CLEARLY injured. The fuck outta here.

this is a lot of bullshit.

Going into this game he was clearly healthy enough to play.

The re-injury right before the 2nd TD meant he was NO LONGER healthy enough to play.

These two facts are basically objectively true.

they get a W

and nobody has shit to say

just like nobody had shit to say when they won the previous 2 weeks

with the same guy playing on the same knee starting at QB

can we all at least agree on that

(except for the one dude above who said he should't have been starting since the BAL game, in which case they probably don't make the offs)

I don't take exception with the opinions expressed in this post

as much as I do the sentiment that somehow that would have absolved Shannahan of any other criticism

if they start Cousins in the last 2 regular seasons games, I don't think they even make the playoffs

he beat the Browns

= Shannahan criticized for not playing Bob

didn't the same shit happen in the ATL game

Bob got ko'd with the lead

Cousins came in and WAS lost?

I'm not going to type out every other scenario

but if it ended in an L, Shannahan still would have been criticized

they won the division with a rookie QB

and had the lead in their first playoff game since...?

in the 3rd quarter

I can't really find fault with the coach for that

how badly did Shanahan fuck up by keeping Griffin in there after the reinjury in the 1st Q?

lol @ all your crystal balls and armchair stethoscopes. put it away and listen up.

look, sk**s fans, RG3 is your franchise QB. he's your guy and this is the playoffs. you play him come hell or high water. that's how you win in the NFL. that's the mentality your franchise QB needs to win rings. and last night shanahan let bob know in no uncertain terms that for the rest of his career, as far as the playoffs are concerned, he's in the game, period. kirk cuz ain't bailing you out and nobody cares about your knees, so pull it the eff together and figure out a way to win the game.

y'all should get down on your knees and thank shanny that bob learned this lesson in his ROOKIE season, 'cause all that means is more rings for y'all in the future. stop whining. the seahawks were a way better team and y'all weren't winning that game anyway. y'all definitely weren't winning with cousins. what happened last night is the best possible outcome for your franchise, long-term. it's a shame bob went down like he did, but them's the risks and the risk was worth it. even if he's out next year, the risk was worth it. you can't teach what he learned last night in practice, and some QBs go their whole careers and never get it (and never win). shanny made the right call. if y'all had been to more than one super bowl in the last 25 years, you'd know that.

stop. whining.

anyone arguing that RG3 should've been taken out of the game in the first quarter or halftime or any time prior to his knee falling apart is an idiot. all y'all armchair orthopedic surgeons in here freeze-framing your DVRs to pinpoint the exact moment RG3 was too hurt to play, in your non-medical opinion, need to sit down.

bob is your franchise QB and this is the playoffs. you put him in the game and you leave him there till his knee self-destructs. it was the right call. and every sk**s fan in here needs to get down on your ashy knees and thank the man who drafted the #3 QB in the league and the #2 rusher in the league in the same year for doing what y'all would've been too stupid to do and leaving your QB in the game to learn a lesson that's gonna win you rings-- multiple-- down the road.

What do you expect Coach Herm to say? As a former player, he's part of that on field football culture that really believes in leaving it all on the field and putting dirt on injuries...

I think this is less about moral outrage and more about just being smart about the situation...U got a QB that ain't even 23 yet...The world is his for the taking...He has the future in his hands...In fact, he's being looked at as the face of the NFL...

No need to disrupt that so early into his career, especially when the most respect doctor in the NFL is telling u to proceed with caution...

Is that being unreasonable?

http://espn.go.com/nfl/playoffs/2012/story/_/id/8822363/report-robert-griffin-iii-washington-redskins-partially-tore-acl-lcl

Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III has suffered partial tears to the anterior cruciate ligament and lateral collateral ligament in his right knee, according to a report from The Washington Post.

NFC East blog

Graziano ESPN.com's Dan Graziano writes about all things NFC East in his division blog.

Griffin, who entered Sunday's wild-card playoff game already nursing a previously sprained LCL in the same knee, appeared to tweak the knee on a pass attempt in the first quarter and then left the game in the fourth quarter after twisting his leg while attempting to recover a muffed shotgun snap.

Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan said in a news conference Monday that the results of the MRI are prompting the team to send Griffin to Florida on Tuesday to see renowned orthopedist James Andrews for more examinations, essentially a second opinion that will decide the team's fate for the 2013 season.

"There is a concern," Shanahan said. "That's why he's going to see him."

The Redskins are seeking a second opinion because it is possible the MRI could be showing previous knee injuries. Griffin suffered a torn ACL in his right knee while playing in college at Baylor in 2009.

Players always want to play and feel they are invincible. That's part of what makes them athletes.

If they don't know what is precisely at stake because the coach won't let them be examined properly, they can't even make a dumb judgement call.

Few are wise enough to know when to sit. Especially when the injury happens in game.

The coach is the only one in a position where he can try to evaluate the situation and make a tough call.

Shanahan failed.

It cost the team the game and it cost the star QB his knee ligaments.

not exactly related, but i feel like Shanahan has a pretty well established track record of unnescissarily doing stupid things that put RG3 and the franchises future in jeopardy.

Sure others are to blame, but can we not let Shanahan off the hook on this one? I know yesterday's game is pretty easy to second guess, but early on in the season i felt like Shanahan was going to get the kid murked. I'm mostly surprised it took 17 games.

The team had 40 yards passing between the re-injury in the 1st quarter and when Cousins came in in the 4th quarter.

It was Shanahan's decision to stay with RG3 throughout all that, and the result speaks for itself.

The team never came close to scoring again (AND they kept calling keepers and bootlegs)
so even in the short term, it was the wrong decision and cost the team any shot at winning.

It was shitty coaching long term AND short term.

you went up against the #1 defense in the NFL and got shut down. it happens. you scored 14 points against a defense that was allowing 15/game. the 49ers could only manage 13 points two weeks ago. nothing unusual happened here. considering the fact that you weren't beating the seahawks anyway, bob getting three and a half quarters of playoff experience was the only W available to you and you got it. thank shanny.

Seattle's defense played good, not great, but they punked Hankerson, Punked Garcon, and the Skins did them a favor and stopped running the ball.

Enjoy the win, and congrats on a great season. Good luck in Atlanta, ya'll have a real shot to win.
