Klinsmann reveals 25-man roster for USMNT January camp
JANUARY 6, 2013
Simon Borg
MLSsoccer.com

http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2013/01/06/klinsmann-reveals-25-man-roster-usmnt-january-camp

US men's national team manager Jurgen Klinsmann on Sunday named a 25-man squad for the annual January camp that kicks off on Monday, January 7 at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.

The roster is an MLS-heavy one with 21 players who play in the top-flight US league with 12 of 19 MLS clubs represented. Alfredo Morales (Hertha Berlin), Alejandro Bedoya (out of contract), Mix Diskerud (Rosenborg) and Joshua Gatt (Molde) were the non-MLS call-ups.

The training camp culminates with a January 29 friendly against Canada in the USMNT's first-ever match at Houston's BBVA Compass Stadium (9 pm ET).

Klinsmann called up three players who call BBVA Compass Stadium home. Houston Dynamo forward Bruin, goalkeeper Hall and captain Brad Davis all made the January cut. The Dynamo, Earthquakes and Sporting Kansas City each have three representatives in the squad.

Eight players on the roster are yet to earn their first USMNT cap: Steven Beitashour (San Jose Earthquakes), Tony Beltran (Real Salt Lake), Matt Besler (Sporting Kansas City), Connor Lade (NY Red Bulls), Justin Morrow (San Jose Earthquakes), Bruin, Hall and Morales.

Forward Juan Agudelo and midfielder Graham Zusi will presumably miss the first week of US camp after it was revealed that both will be training with English Premier League side West Ham.

The USA's first 2014 World Cup qualifier in the CONCACAF Hexagonal phase follows just a few days after the Canada friendly when Klinsmann's squad travels to face Honduras on February 6 (4 pm ET).

"There's a good chance of six, seven, eight guys out of this group making it to the Honduras game," Klinsmann told Fox Soccer.

USMNT 2013 January Camp Roster

Goalkeepers (3): Tally Hall (Houston Dynamo), Bill Hamid (D.C. United), Sean Johnson (Chicago Fire)

Defenders (9): Steven Beitashour (SJ Earthquakes), Tony Beltran (Real Salt Lake), Matt Besler (Sporting Kansas City), AJ De La Garza (LA Galaxy), Omar Gonzalez (LA Galaxy), Connor Lade (NY Red Bulls), Alfredo Morales (Hertha Berlin), Justin Morrow (SJ Earthquakes), Jeff Parke (Philadelphia Union)

Midfielders (8): Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake), Alejandro Bedoya (out of contract), Mix Diskerud (Rosenborg), Brad Evans (Seattle Sounders), Benny Feilhaber (Sporting Kansas City), Joshua Gatt (Molde), Brad Davis (Houston Dynamo), Graham Zusi (Sporting Kansas City)

Forwards (5): Juan Agudelo (Chivas USA), Will Bruin (Houston Dynamo), Edson Buddle (Colorado Rapids), Eddie Johnson (Seattle Sounders), Chris Wondolowski (SJ Earthquakes)

The usa is going to dominate in 10 years?

I support the stars and stripes, but your post is a paragon of why america is shite. The concept that everything has to be americanized or dominated by america in order to be great.

what exactly does that even mean? have Americans changed the rules of the game or something? are they not playing 90 min like the rest of the world? what exactly do you suggest be done? should the United States just give up on soccer all together and stop playing?

you mentioned that this "Americanization" is why the US is no good. i'd argue that your attitude and people like you has more to do with it.

In response to Reply # 0

i forgot he existed
http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2013/01/14/american-exports-findley-released-nottingham-forest

Real Salt Lake may be one step closer to getting their man up front after English outfit Nottingham Forest announced Monday that they have parted ways with Robbie Findley by mutual consent.

The split clears the way for a possible move back to MLS for Findley, who started his career with the LA Galaxy but enjoyed the vast majority of his success with Real Salt Lake before leaving for Forest after the 2010 season. The speedy forward scored 29 goals in 96 appearances over three-and-a-half seasons for RSL, and scored the vital equalizer in the team's MLS Cup 2009 win over the Galaxy.

Despite his imminent departure from the league, the Portland Timbers selected him in the 2010 Expansion Draft and still hold his rights. However, reports surfaced last week that the Timbers had traded the 27-year-old's rights back to RSL.

Real Salt Lake GM Garth Lagerwey told ESPN 700 radio last week that if Findley were released from his Forest contract, there would be "a real good chance" the MLS club could land him back at Rio Tinto Stadium.

RSL declined to comment when contacted by MLSsoccer.com on Monday.

Findley, who featured for the US men's national team in the 2010 World Cup and has yet to score in 11 games at the international level, endured a disappointing spell in England, making 25 league appearances and scoring three goals in an injury-riddled two years with Forest. He recently had a brief loan spell with League Two side Gillingham, with whom he made seven appearances, scoring no goals.

that dude is the quintessential "good at everything, great at nothing" player that's only a rotation/depth guy in MLS. either Sigi + Klinsi talk too much or Klinsi is too stupid to be able to evaluate domestic talent. Brad Evans would struggle to make the XI in a lot of other CONCACAf nations, never mind the US

sigh

(I know it's essentially a trialist camp, but Brad Evans isn't and never will be USMNT quality I didn't need to watch him embarras himself here to confirm that)

Klinsmann is insane. I hope his little MLS scouting camp here pays off. god forbid he actually do something like watch American soccer outside of USMNT camps...

pretty sad performance by the US, though tbf you could tell the players didn't seem that familiar with each other and Canada defended pretty well. Some world-class heckling in the stands though. We were sitting a few rows back of the goal, some dudes ragged on the Canadian goalie for the entire 1st half which was 2,000% more entertaining than the action on the field

Josh Gatt is fast
Zusi and Wando played well and its a shame Wando won't fit even though he put up the best performance
Brad Evans is terrible in the midfield
Klinsmann spending a week on fitness for players that only took 5-3 weeks off was ridiculous. American players are pretty much guaranteed to be fit. We need technical and tactical training.
Kyle Beckerman good
Benny still got it
Gonzales locked in

but whatevs. it was a trial.
i'm still worried the real team won't be able to break down a defense either

because Portland actually had a sequence of four guys (one a Colombian, on a Jamaican, one an Argentinian, and one an American via Liberia) stringing together passes leading into an attacking move in the box within the 1st 15m of their preseason match that displayed more dynamism than Klinsi's team did in 90 minutes combined last night.

I don't want hear nothing about what a "guru" or "offensive visionary" or whatever fucking bullshit people have been saying about Klinsmann again. the guy is just a soccer coach, nothing special, except that he's apparently too stupid to realize you can get MLS Direct Kick for $60 and save us all this embarrassment against Canada by just watching some damn matches in your free time.

if MLS Direct Kick can't do enough to dissuade you from the idea that Brad Evans is an attacking midfielder, then I don't fucking know what to do for you.

and that's disappointing for the USMNT. Jones and Edu, i think, are better fits because of their athletic ability, but they also are not good enough for an elite national team.

but that's entirely different frame than that beckerman is good. he's not and he's old. friendlies against canada seem, to me, to be exactly where you'd hope Klinsi would take shots that someone could prove themselves. we know what beckerman is...and it's not good enough for anything beyond fringe USMNT player. is there someone else out there? a kid? Danny Williams?

In response to Reply # 38

if Kyle Beckerman had a bit more footspeed no one would question his inclusion.

in CONCACAF games he can be very effective -- he's as technically solid and two-footed as American midfielders get, his decision making is great, his motor runs for 90 minutes, his focus is laser pointed in the area of the field he's tasked with running, but his foot speed is subpar. so whenever the US plays someone bigger than a minnow, his lack of pace leaves him looking "out of position" or "outclassed" all game long.

but he isn't really, he's just slow.

(and yes I will contend to my grave if he just shaved his fucking dreads dropping those 15 lbs might instantly vault him to La Liga quality, minimum, because those hideous things aren't doing shit besides slowing him down)

In response to Reply # 40

but that's not "good." if your holding midfielder can't hold a large portion of the field, that's a problem--be it due to slowness/dreads or due to mental failings. Similarly, that slowness means he *really* shouldn't be getting involved offensively because he can't recover fast enough.

not trying to sound elitist or hateful, but i had thought the US was past accepting one dimensional players with blatantly obvious and crippingly flaws as quality USMNT players. Beckerman, in the way you described him, is a fringe player on a national team. It's true the US has Bradley, but when Beckerman is praised...yuck.

literally dominate -- bosses the midfield torturing the opposition attackers in the tackle and intelligently and effectively supports his attacking mids AND backline by being a great fulcrum in the holding mid spot -- for me to rag on him.

does that mean I won't panic if he gets introduced in a WC match? no, not at all -- I will fucking *panic* if Beckerman gets introduced in a WC match, because high level international soccer is *too punishing* on slow players.

but I still think Beckerman is a good player and I fear and respect him as MLS competition. and yeah, it kinda annoys me when USMNT fans rag on him because they don't see what's good, only what's bad, and he IS A GOOD PLAYER, just not suited for the role he plays in int'l soccer.

Howard went out with broken bones in his back, he's down for 3 - 4 weeks.

Hope Solo had wrist surgery and is out 3 -4 months. Her backup, Jill Loyden broke her hand on Thursday and is out for 3 months too.

Talk about terrible timing. Fortunately, Guzan is in the form of his life, and we will need that when we go to Azteca.

The worst that could happen are multiple reflex handballs. The best that could happen with Cameron and Gonzalez on the field together again is an embarrassment or five. This is going to be the worst defense that Brad Guzan has played behind all year, and that is absolutely pathetic.

Cameron is gonna be our new Boca anyway so you may as well get them both acclimated.
that is, if we even qualify.
with no Tim, i'm not sure where the leader back there is.
i get why there's no Boca but at least get him on the bench or something.

I know they wanted a chilly area without a large latino population, but choosing a high altitude location in March they had to know there was a possibility of snow. There are plenty of good venues in the U.S. that would have been a good fit for what the U.S. wanted. Choosing Colorado put the snow in play and made for a shitty game, just a terrible choice.

Playing in Azteca has always been a problem for the US, with the smog and the altitude, which is still a half mile higher from sea level than Denver. If they can get accustomed to that quicker, it would help their endurance for the game at Mexico City.

Went to Smithfield in NYC- was actually surrounded by a grip of Peruvians who went nuts for their side winning.

Also, two of my co-bloggers partied with the Outlaws in Denver: http://fourfivetwo.com/2013/03/23/we-came-we-saw-we-cheered-on-dudes-with-snow-shovels-fourfivetwo-at-usavcrc/

I'm not exactly proud of how the U.S. pulled out 4 points this week but considering the injuries the squad was dealing with I am pretty damned ecstatic that we're sitting on 4 points with the two hardest road trips out of the way.

I'm hoping that after watching us scrap through qualifying with Klinsmann that the Eurosnobs will realize that it's the talent level that defines the teams play and not the coaching but I think that will always be an issue. Concacaf is getting tougher and the U.S. just doesn't have the players to stunt on these scrappy teams, we have to work for results.

The best part of this game? Omar Gonzalez just stepped up to the big time and Matt Besler just put himself on the map. In an "all hands on deck" defensive effort under huge pressure they both acquitted themselves quite well.

After this international break there's not much to be proud of but you can't complain either.

P.S. Comeback Landon

Donovan has fallen down U.S. team pecking order: Klinsmann

By Simon Evans

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Landon Donovan's return to the U.S. squad for June's World Cup qualifiers is no certainty as the country's all-time top scorer dropped down the pecking during his break from the game, coach Juergen Klinsmann said on Wednesday.

Donovan has already missed World Cup qualifiers against Honduras, Costa Rica and Mexico in recent months following his decision last December to take a break from the game.

The winger, who was an automatic choice under previous coaches Bob Bradley and Bruce Arena, returned to action with Major League Soccer's LA Galaxy in late March but Klinsmann feels other players now have a stronger claim.

"I'm not talking names but there are players clearly ahead of Landon Donovan right now," the former Germany coach told a small group of reporters.

"Things will develop over time, we will see how he will do in the next couple of weeks, months and we will look at the entire picture and make our calls."

Asked if there was any question whether a fully fit and in-form Donovan would return to the team, Klinsmann said: "There are a lot of questions. Looking back on the last two years that we have been in charge of the program we have seen a lot of players coming through and making big impacts, showing they are a thousand percent committed to the cause and to the team and built themselves a very strong position."

Klinsmann said he has not spoken to Donovan since his return to action.

"We spoke at length at the end of January when he said he didn't know when to come back and then of course he made his choice to come back at the end of March when we were, of course, busy with Costa Rica and Mexico," said Klinsmann.

"I'm just glad to see him back on the field. Now he is catching up and is trying his best, I'm watching and observing and then down the road I will make my decisions in terms of who I see in front of him, the depth chart we have and in terms of where we see him right now within the roster and then I will decide whether to bring him in or not to bring him in."

After friendly games against Belgium and Germany, the U.S. face World Cup qualifiers in June against Jamaica, Panama and Honduras - three matches which will go a long way to determining whether the U.S. make it to next year's finals in Brazil.

Klinsmann, who used Sporting Kansas City midfielder Graham Zusi in Donovan's usual slot on the right-flank during the April games, said the team had developed a chemistry over the past two years when Donovan, who has 49 goals in 144 games for the United States, was out with injuries and then his break.

"There is a chemistry being developed of a group and you have to feel where it is moving towards. He hasn't been part of the development of that team most of the time over the last two years, so chemistry is extremely important," he said.

"Most of the time, he was not part of that process, that was his choice and I totally understand that, it's no problem. But at the same time we are moving forward at our speed and therefore it is not down to one game when you score a goal and say now I am back in the team - it doesn't work that way.

"I've always said that we will observe him, like we observe all the other players over the stretch of a long period and then we decide whether he is part of that picture or not."

while the circumstances are what they are
you can't set that kind of precedent
especially when you're in the middle of trying to season a back-up player decent enough for that position and build team chemistry.

i mean, if i was Landon i wouldn't expect to get right back into the lineup anyway.

I refuse to believe that...

For all the talk (from myself included) about how we need to play this game the way it's meant to be played - possession mostly - the previous regime(s) had us hustling, making runs, and refusing to be outworked. This latest incarnation is just completely uninspiring and infuriating to watch. Not only are we bossed technically, but we look like we have no interest in competing.

The players aren't getting any worse, we just lack any kind of managerial talent that can develop a way to play that masks the technical deficiencies against elite non-concacaf competition.

The problem is he's definitely behind Jones and Bradley in the holding spot. And we really need some help and depth on the wings which he can't really do. That, and the emergence of Geoff Cameron at the DMF/CB/RB spot. I can't see him on the plane to Brazil at the expense of an attacking MF spot, and Cameron's just more versatile.

oh and (Stu, at least this night, excepted) Landon Donovan is still the best player in the UMSNT pool.

too many people are just basing the second half on this idea that Holden and Mix are way better than Torres and Beckerman. They are better - though Torres has more place in this discussion than does Beckerman - but really the game opened up based on Landon losing his leash, and flying all over the place. That happened at the end of the first half, and made taking control of the midfield less of a challenge for us after the break.

just cancel your hot dog subscription.

he's not the most talented soccer player. stop. but he loves soccer and he works his ASS OFF. stop. and his edge is in being more clever and focused, same as Biggie, so on a night where the other side isn't that talented at soccer, Wondo has his opportunity to shine -- he will out work them, he will ot-think them, and even though LAME ASS FUCKING TA FANS love to hate on Wondo (I been in the stadium, I've heard them) tonight is his night to make red, white, and blue proud.

love Wondo. his bread + butter is a sorry side like Belize.

everyone hating, y'all were prolly the same small-minders who couldn't wrap your head around Ching. we are a diverse nation. we have much to give. please salute the NATIVE AMERICOA Wondo on a night like tonight.

And completely out of the blue. The goalie had no idea that a shot was coming. He was really flat-footed and really had no chance to make a save. That was a incredible shot!

He's got some time before he peaks, and he's going to have a good career.

Him, Holden, Bradley, Jones, possibly Torres (aside from any midfield roles for Donovan and/or Dempsey) gives us some interesting options.

However, I will say a top 8 finish shouldn't be unexpected. That's if they get don't end up in a "group of death" type scenario.

I mean, not with how they've played through the Hex and with the way the depth players are playing this Gold Cup.

WC is still a year away. Lots can change. But I'll go top 8 finish.

Obviously they'd like to win it.
And the talent on the powerhouse teams is superior.
so would a top 8 or 16 finish be something to celebrate like it is for certain schools in NCAA basketball?

France, Spain, etc.

How we fare against Mexico in the Gold Cup is the big test, because Mexico's squad at full strength is strong. Not sure if they will have everyone for the GC final, but if we make it to that and beat them, it still bodes well for the WC. Quarterfinals would be nice, Semis would be amazing.

and Klinsmann definitely seems to be learning the player pool a bit better.

and for whatever reason, he's finally getting good performances out of key players like Altidore + Donovan, which is what US soccer watchers have been saying is the key to any US success for a long time.

but no hate right now -- hopefully this good run rides into the World Cup, and I'm glad a period of uncertainty and frequent turnover seems to be productively coalescing into a good group of key players being put into the best spots for them to succeed.

and Klinsmann Shminsmann, this tournament is really about Landon Donovan -- dude is an American legend playing some of the most complete soccer of his life. I couldn't be happier for the guy.

There has never been a team fielded by the United States that looks as confident and calm in POSSESSION as this Gold Cup team.

Most of these guys will not represent in Brazil, but that this is how we now look in our regional competition is a really, really big deal.

I'll be watching ESPNUK because fuck Fox, fuck Gus, and fuck Wynalda.

also Derek Rae is boss.

Torres has been relieved, and Corona and Bedoya are both starting. It will be interesting to see if Torres being left out has any noticeable impact on our ability to retain possession. (Probably minimal difference, truth be told.) Stu is back on, which leaves Mix on the bench. Ras Trent gets to anchor things in front of the CBs once again, and a chance to continue his surprising form. GAM up top with Donovan going nuts all around him.

Should be a good battle.

Oh, that's offically a problem...

A Night to Remember
Posted by Jozy Altidore

SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina -- Well, that was fun.

As I get ready to leave the hotel and head to the airport, I can honestly say this has been another great trip and created one more lasting memory in my life as a professional athlete.

My United States teammates, coaching staff and I capped our five-day trip to the historic city of Sarajevo with what was truly a thrilling 4-3 win against a very talented Bosnia-Herzegovina side.

Call it resilience, perseverance, resolve. Call it whatever you want. The bottom line is that we showed true American spirit and heart rallying for a win against a country poised to earn a spot in next year's World Cup.

Personally, it was a night I won't ever forget. If you know me, you’ll understand I am not one who focuses on personal accolades or accomplishments. But following the match, I thought about the late Josef Schulz -- my mentor growing up -- and how I hoped my role in our come-from-behind victory would have made him proud.

Mr. Schulz saw something in me years ago when I was just a kid and believed I could find success and achieve moments like this, and because of that, I will be forever grateful.

This trip to Sarajevo also served as a reminder of how lucky I am that my field of work has given me opportunities to visit cities like this across the world.

Sarajevo is loaded with history, from when it hosted the 1984 Winter Olympics to the Bosnian War for independence that resulted in thousands losing their lives in the 1990s. Having a chance to make this trip with my American teammates leaves me humbled and grateful reflecting on these kind of moments.

But now, I must head back to my new home in England and get ready for Saturday's season opener with Sunderland.

Everything has been a whirlwind of sorts the past two months and I couldn't have asked for anything better or different in my life.

A new club. A new home. A new country. A new start. Perfect.

This is what it's all about. I am back in the Premier League with Sunderland, playing for a club mixed with new and old faces, featuring a lot of talent and keen on making its way to the top of the league table.

Getting transferred to Sunderland and having the opportunity to play under Paolo Di Canio and learn from him has been a blessing and tremendous opportunity for me. Our manager has us working hard and playing an exciting brand of soccer, all reasons that Wearside was the place I was destined and wanted to be all along.

Leaving my friends, the organization and amazing fans of AZ Alkmaar was truly the most bittersweet part of this move. I spent two of the most important years of my career with AZ and will never forget my stay there. At the time, I didn't realize my last goal at AZ would be one that helped the club win its first Dutch Cup in more than three decades. Obviously, that will be a memory that lasts a lifetime for me.

I went out on top with AZ and am ready for this exciting challenge ahead with Sunderland.

On that note, it's time to check out and head to the airport to get back to my new home, teammates and Wearside family in Sunderland.

Excited doesn't even remotely describe how I feel about our season opener against Fulham. Stepping on the Stadium of Light pitch for the first match, with 40,000-plus fans rocking the venue, is going to be an awesome experience.

Hopefully, I and the boys come flying out of the gate and deliver a positive result to start this exciting campaign.

Until next time, be safe, and you will hear from me again soon, my friends.

I want him to dress and make the bench, but I'd like someone else to start up top. With his injury, I think the extra time would be better, especially with El Tri coming to town next week.

when the ref stopped it at first, it was the Costa Ricans who demanded the game continue, thinking that neither team would be able to do much of anything and they would get the draw they came there for. They only kicked up a fuss when a goal was somehow created.

Everything else, all this, is just sour grapes.

- I hate clint dempsey. I get that he takes the shot that nobody else can, but for every other minute of a contest I just loathe his presence. I hate his effort, I hate his demeanor. That penalty never should have been a goal, lucky ass.

- Jozy has to know better. Really immature pathetic way to get your ass suspended.

- Orozco was awful all night, and Besler looked largely outclassed

- Howard is past it

- Beas played probably his worst game in years

- the Cameron/Jones pairing at least settled down in the 2nd half after an awful 1st.

just a terrible night for this team with bad luck (bradley injury, third goal) mixed with shitty play

he's still a good goalkeeper, but he used to be great -- one of the clear stars of the team. considering GK is historically one of the US's strongest position, I think it's perfectly fair to question whether he should be a lock for Brazil.

(for the record -- I think he'll make it + deserve it, but I don't fault those who question his spot at this point)

and for my money after Brazil it should be Guzan #1, Bill Hamid #2 (although Klinsi needs to have a talk with Don Garber about rescuing Hamid from DCU before that organization breeds too many bad habits into him)

Howard will likely be our #1 in Brazil and that's good, but he should feel some pressure.

I think 17 - 18 of those slots are filled, but there's a handful of positions that need to be solidified.

Hopefully we've already got a training site scoped out, and somewhere to set up base camp in Brazil.

I haven't seen this posted anywhere and it's a week or so old, but no matter how you felt about Bradley as the U.S. coach you should definitely respect him for the work he's doing for the Pharoahs.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/soccer/news/20131009/bob-bradley-egypt/?sct=sc_bf1_a4

Unfortunately it looks like Egypt is going to fall short of qualifying but the job Bradley and his players have done is pretty remarkable.

there's a few MLS teams who should be jealous. speaking of which ... have you seen this guy on reddit who's been making up some mock MLS jerseys? my favorite is the one he did for the San Jose Earthquakes.

I am NOT going to be happy.

Bradley is the man in midfield (aside: why is Clintu captain instead of General Bradley?) and he works best when he has license to roam -- SOLE license to roam. Turn it over, take it forward, attack with pace and fitness, i.e. YOU ESS AY SOCCER!

My first choice is Cameron starting at d-mid with Bradley, second choice is (sigh...) Beckerman (who is slow as hell, but as tactically disciplined as they come in that spot), but man ... FUCK Klinsi if he doggedly stickes by Jones.

And yes, this is inspired by watching Bradley play as the clear catalyst and best player on the field in this Apr 2 friendly v. Mexico.

he's the best off the ball player in the USMNT pool by a mile.

Prolly one of the best off the ball players in the world, if we're being honest ... everything else he does is pretty pedestrian, his movement IQ is world class, though, I'll take him in the 70'+ when we're chasing a goal.

Now, don't you think Cameron is best suited to handling the right back position like he does at Stoke. He's really to only player that has seen top tier wingers like a Ronaldo.

Dude, he's almost always the best player on the field when the US plays now. It's really no question who the best player is now, perhaps with the exception of the keepers.

The success of this team rides on three guys. One of whom is in form but doesn't score, one who looks like he lost confidence after a shitty season in Europe, and we have no idea about Duece.

Personally, I want to see these young guys play.

Dempsey injury obviously skews things, but they've got two good chances off set pieces and pretty much nothing else (a PK shout that should have been given after a turnover and quick counter, but it was a pass denied, not even a shot). 11th new backline in the last 11 games, I think they said on TV?

Anyway -- looking like a lackadaisical warmup friendly.

...

Goodson dressed for eight of the Americans’ 10 matches in the final round of CONCACAF qualifying for the World Cup, playing three times – all victories, over Costa Rica and Mexico at home and in Panama to dash the hopes of Los Canaleros.

“When Jurgen needed a result, he called on me,” Goodson said. “You look at the games that were played last year. Gold Cup final, snow game, 2-0 against Mexico. Were there any games bigger than that? I played in all three of those. So it’s certainly surprising and something I think Jurgen got wrong.”

Klinsmann appears to be set on using Matt Besler, John Anthony Brooks, Geoff Cameron and Omar Gonzalez as his four center backs. The inclusion of Brooks, 21, might have sealed Goodson’s fate – although Goodson still can’t say for sure.

“I asked Jurgen for an explanation,” Goodson said. “It was something that he was unwilling to give me. He said that he would speak with me after the World Cup about it, and I said that I thought I certainly deserved an explanation. And it was something that he was unwilling to give.”

Goodson allowed that Klinsmann could have already had his 23-man roster in mind before the USMNT training camp convened at Stanford on May 14.

“It’s certainly possible,” Goodson said. “We trained in two groups. There were some guys I never really saw. I was one of the best in the things that I did, I felt. I was winning games and did a good job. If you’re basing it just upon the camp, I certainly think that I was deserving to go. And even outside of the camp, the things I’ve done in the past would have earned me a spot.”

Michael Bradley is that dude and we should all be thrilled we get to watch firsthand as he puts the beleaguered Toronto MLS franchise on his back.

And the hidden downside to Germany Jones getting locked into the holding spot is now he wants to hit Hollywood through passes every time he gets the ball. If only Beckerman could run...

and I don't know why it took me to realize till now, but did Yedlin get his spot because he's been practicing against Green every day? Only explanation that makes sense, right?

although the formation is designed for Bradley to push up and inhabit the attacking role (would we be seeing this if Bradley never comes to MLS? hmmmmmmm)

ESPN running a puff piece about how much better German youth development is than US youth development. Who cares? It's not about what you did before (c) Klinsmann, it's what you can do today. Klinsi is so obviously biased while hammering that he's the most impartial of all, it's maddening. For a guy that I thought was at least a strong communicator now seems completely full of hot air as the tournament approaches.

The score shouldn't have been this close.
