I've never heard Montana described as a "great leader". Not that
he was a non-leader, but rather that his greatness was more
about his coolness in the clutch, professionalism, etc.

It'll be emotional when the Ravens lose this playoffs (and I imagine they will).

Ray probably wrote his final game speech 7 years ago and is sitting with the Word doc open right now just updating the references.

***Find All Shawshank Redemption***

or some shit like that.

Frank shouldn't be caught off guard by his speech. It's no different from something Roddy Piper or the Rock would do.

Ray has literally used up all his fake emotion points with me.

Great leader, but his pre-game speeches bore me now.

All of them.

If you don't like Ray, I can see where you're coming from, but this is like Daniel Day-Lewis giving his final performance as an actor who is giving his final performance. If you don't think he's gonna feel the emotion, you're just a cold-hearted man.

He ain't never speeched a touchdown.

Speeched the ball into T.J. Houshmanzadeh's hands.

Speeched a tackle.

Them dudes ain't playing harder just cuz Ray referenced a verse from the Bible while they were getting their ankles taped.

except that one speech ed reed gave when he was at miami, shit gave me chills.

guys like him, lewis, dawkins, et al, i dont like their speeches as much as the fact that they back it up on the field. they bring that same passion in their play and THAT'S where it can elevate the total team game.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

In response to Reply # 33

They obviously don't have a literal impact, but I absolutely believe a good speech sticks with a person when they're about to perform, whether it's a battle, a sport, a play, or an important day for a business. I remember the good speeches I've heard, and they gave me that extra boost to do my best.

So we may just have a fundamental difference of opinion on this one.

it's not about a one-shot speech to fire the team up. it's about the ongoing way the coaches and veteran guys communicate with the team and further its development.

i have to say that--when you can understand what the fuck he is saying--darryl sutter is a master of that. he seems to know exactly what buttons to push. he's got his own way of encouraging, sometimes he'll get pissed (and it sounds funny) and a lot of times he will fuck with guys, say very disparaging and sarcastic things quietly. he'll also be honest with guys. he once told martin gelinas that he was stinking up the joint so bad that he only had a spot in the lineup because they had no other left wings. gelinas went on to score the series-clinching goals in all three rounds and had what would have been the stanley cup clinching goal disallowed on review.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

you can cry at the end of the brian's song, you can cry at jimmy v's speech, you can cry at the end of any biography of roberto clemente, but i'm sorry, crying in this situation is absolutely unacceptable.

I dunno about him personally and of course he almost lost his career to a bid but what I do know is that 1) he was a fucking BEAST on the field and 2) he was very personable and giving of his time with the fans.

I stopped by his restaurant (good ass cornbread, BTW) a couple times when he was doing his radio show. Every time he would have a meet and greet with fans, signing stuff and shooting the shit with them. He was also doing his show so it was kind of a long stop for him, but he never looked rushed. He respected the fans' time and, in turn, they respected his. I never saw anybody linger. There were some clear regulars, too, people that came every week or whenever they could. Outside of Unitas, I don't think there is a bigger name in Baltimore football. That is quite an accomplishment given what the Colts achieved there, for Lewis and also Ed Reed to get that same kind of respect as legends in their own time.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

He's one of those dudes that i hear give speeches and he makes me want to put a helmet on.

He's a leader that demanded the best of every single player on the field with him. He gave rah rah, but he gave every ounce on every play. He's been the face of a franchise. I'ma miss Rayray a lot.

I'll miss watching him play.

I might have to watch that Ray Lewis dance one more time for good measure.

45. "He almost single handedly turned Bmore into a Football town..."
In response to Reply # 0

During my early childhood years (80s/early to mid 90s), there was no doubt that Bmore was a baseball town. The Orioles ran the city. Ripken was the hero (and still is to a large degree) and face of the city. Now obviously the O's had the advantage since the Colts skipped town in the middle of the night in the early 80s. But even prior to that, the Orioles had a firm grip on the city.

Now obviously the Colts were wildly popular during the Johnny U days, but I don't believe they were ever quite as popular or beloved as the Ravens are today. Growing up in the Bmore metro area I have witnessed this transformation take place. Bmore folks are crazy about their Ravens. I do believe that Ray Lewis has had a monumental role in this transformation.

Much respect to one of the greatest football players of all time. Despite not being a Ravens fan, I used to make it to at least one Ravens pre-season practice every year. He was simply amazing to watch. The combination of size, speed, strength, intelligence, and tencacity was awe-inspiring. He's definitely on the short list of all-time great NFL players. He's also on that short list of NFL players who's popularity transcended the sport. Like I said, just a treat to watch.

In response to Reply # 45

The older folks in the city are Baltimore Colts fans first and Ravens fans second.

The Baltimore Colts are a part of the fabric that helped to make the NFL into what it is today. Johnny U wasn't just a QB, he was THE QB, go talk to some of those old heads about Lenny Moore, John Mackie, Art Donovan and Raymond Berry. Watch their eyes light up when they talk about those dudes.

I don't say any of this to shit on Ray or his legacy as of now i'm just saying I think you're underestimating what the Colts meant to this city.
