"General Greivis "

this is basically a bat signal for you Kajun since I know youll be here. Whats the deal with him. He was one of my favorite players in the ACC the past decade. Just calm, steady, can do it all.

I remember a couple weeks ago you said something about him being a great backup pg. You still feel that way? I mean he just won WCF POTW, and has flirted with a triple double in 2 of his last 3.

I dont watch the Hornets much so I cant really say. With these numbers why cnat he be a good starting pg? You think his numbers are inflated? Its usually harder to get assists on bad teams, but it also depends on the sets your team runs. You think hes already at his ceiling? Even if so hes putting up these numbers--seems fine as a starting pg.

Playing next to EG should help him be a better player--even if it doesnt show statistically.

PG warz cats, he should at least be in tier 3 right now with da gatekeeper and jrue.

I get to watch him vs the Rockets tomorrow

His game has been crazy rounded. Great passer, hustler for every loose ball, scrappy as hell. There's a reason he did so well against Duke, and while it was mostly because he was the PG while we were in the Paulus era, it's also because he was a goddamn good PG.

difference between him and top point guards is that he isn't very athletic. He's skilled and tall and long. He probably has about hit his ceiling, but he is a good starting PG. I was loathing the Darren Collison trade after Chris Paul got traded, but I'm happy with Vasquez now. IMO his biggest deficiency is he isn't very disruptive on defense due to being slow. Overall I like him a lot. Great role player to fit in with (potential/should be) stars like Gordon and Davis.

which is fine by me since I'm a big calderon fan.

you're not going deep in the playoffs with him as your starting PG unless he has 3-4 other weapons with him at all times. BUT he takes care of the ball, gets people good shots, & is a solid rebounder.

horrible shooter though. dude's damn near sinking my FG% alone in fantasy ball with his 4/15 nights.

he might have just won WCPOW, but he plays like he thinks he's League MVP.

from his draft day celebration til now, I love everything about him. Absolutely undeterred by his limitations, which has gotten him way farther than dudes who have more talent. Good for him.

The General

My main issue with him, as has been touched on by others in this post, is that he lacks a certain base-line level of athleticism that the majority of point guards in this league have, which limits his ability to run the offense effectively. Ball pressure turns this guys into a turnover machine, and eats away at the shot clock. His raw stats look good, but they are inflated due to his domination of the ball. He is still below the Jrue/Lawson/Jennings-tier right now, until he cuts down on his turnovers.

Now, having said that I love the guy. I think he would make the PERFECT 3rd guard, 20-25 min a game 6th man, spot starter, etc. He can play both guard spots, and would look just fine next to a pure point guard. He has also looked great next to Gordon so far, as Gordon can handle the ball more and let Greivis pick his spot more carefully. Its only his 3rd year and he has improved so much. His energy is huge.

you said his numbers are inflated --are his assists numbers inflated because he holds onto it and just gives it to guys at the last second where they have to throw up shots? In some ways those shots are harder to make. I thought his vision was good in college for a combo guard.

Rebounding-is he one of those guards that really attacks the basketball, or does he just track back and use his instincts to get the balls that bounce off to him.

His vision is solid, and he is a fine passer. But the offense sans-Gordon is majorly Greivis heavy. His assists are inflated due to the fact that so many of our buckets run through him by design. We run virtually no plays for our admittedly bad 2 guard rotation of Rivers/Mason Jr, and we have no other players that can create their own shot. Not knocking him, but he's not close to a Rondo or CP3 level passer despite his assist avg. Calderon really is a good comparison for him I think.

He hits the glass well, and is 6-6 so it helps. But we are a poor rebounding front court too, which gives him more opportunities.

I mean whats good about him is he doesnt make mistakes with the ball. Sometimes he gets shot happy but without EG in the backcourt--who else is gonna score? I guess Brian Roberts but they dont play together.

If EG were hurt Id actually experiment with playing Roberts at the 2 and hopefully getting Austin to settle in off the bench. I mean I hate to harp on this but he was atrocious tonight. He's gotta be able to at least hit FTs better than that if nothing else falls.

Anyhow, yea Greivis doesnt turn the ball over but he dominates the ball and just gets it to smith and ryan anderson who just shoot, shoot, shoot. Lots of those shots go in. They arent exactly "dimes", but he does get it to them in their spots within the offense. Theres something to be said about that.

Also, he doesnt back down or play scared at all.

15 points, 14 dimes...looks pretty as shit, but didn't really play out like that. I mean, he's steady and makes plenty of good plays, but he racked up 14 assists by mostly just feeding jump shooters.

And you saw our offense just completely stall out in the 2nd half, which happens oh I dunno, every damn game. His limited athleticism leaves few options when plays break down.

And yes Rivers wasn't very good. But in 17 minutes he penetrated at will and got to the line 6 times, which is his future in this league really. Just needs to learn how to make them. I can make excuses for just about everything but his missing free throws...pathetic.

I mean offensively I feel like you have the pieces necessary for the most part with Gordon, but the defense leaves a lot to be desired. With that much size and athleticism at 3-5 you guys should be better at defending the basket, but guys havent learned their rotations yet and make poor decisions.

Seems like Monty is trying to compensate for the poor team defense with the slower pace. You guys might be better off running like us--especially since you can pound the glass with those guys.

You guys have a bunch of shooters at almost every position, you can run, stretch the floor, and catch teams off guard. EG will really help if he can play that Harden role and take it to the hole some.
