"btw, Marvin Lewis putting up Coach of the Year Numbers AGAIN"

Easily the least appreciated coach, maybe ever

He's had that shithole of a franchise competitive for
no reason for several years

Literally he's the only one who cares about football in
that city

Marv is a G among Gs. I know it's an unwritten rule, but if the Eagles could I would kill to make a run at him.

Something I was thinking about
His resume should speak for itself though...dude turned around the CINCINNATI BENGALS...that speaks volumes. And now he doesn't have a choke artist for a QB, nor does he have cats acting a fool off the field

And granted AP is a monster, but Frazier might get a slight edge because Dalton/AJGreen is quite the tandem. Plus, Lewis got that D leading the league in sacks.

marvin lewis has been coaching the bengals for a full decade and has exactly ZERO playoff wins to his name. ZERO. 0-3 in the playoffs. and all wild card appearances, mind you, meaning that in ten years he's NEVER finished as one of the top two seeds. not to mention his sub-.500 career record (also known as a LOSING record) in the regular season. what other NFL coach could survive a decade putting up numbers like that?

the coach of the year buzz he consistently gets from people who know nothing about football is laughable. absolutely hilarious. no one has ever benefited more from being on a lowered expectation loser franchise than marvin lewis. he's a sub-mediocre coach at best. as a steelers fan, i just hope and pray he continues racking up accolades from morons and coaches the bengals for another ten years.

you're saying that you'd rather have marvin lewis coaching your NFL squad than mike tomlin? is that what you're saying? because if that's what you're saying, i'd ask that you please state that very clearly for the record. in fact, you really should make a separate post about it. please, PLEASE tell me that's your new agenda.

i love when people make this argument TEN YEARS into marvin lewis's career. he's been the coach for TEN YEARS. who exactly are you blaming the bengals lack of talent on? sam wyche?

i can't even let you do this to yourself. this is too much. i don't take candy from babies.

six seasons, four playoff appearances, five playoff wins, two super bowl appearances, one ring. that's mike tomlin.
ten seasons, four playoff appearances, zero playoff wins, zero super bowl appearances, zero rings. that's marvin lewis.

so stop now. seriously, stop.

you said that "literally" no coach-- not even tomlin-- could have squeezed more than ten wins out of the bengals this year. which, literally, means you think marvin lewis is the best coach in the NFL. i'm gonna allow you to backtrack and pretend like that's not what you were saying, but that's clearly what you were saying.

but even taking what you said at face value, the argument that lewis was the best NFL coach in 2012 is laughable. there are a dozen other coaches who could've gotten the bengals to ten wins this year. and there are about two or three dozen coaches-- most of whom are out of the league-- who could've won at least ONE playoff game with the bengals in a decade. marvin lewis is not one of those coaches. in conclusion, you're an idiot.

As in, architect of the defense (and surrogate head coach) for
the 2000 Ravens

One of the best defenses ever, really

His name never comes up with coaches who designed
great defenses

He mad average corners great (Duane Starks was lights
out on that team)

Transformed old corners with bum knees to All-Pro safeties
(Rod was world class centerfielder on that 2000 Ravens team)

Matured Ray Lewis from young head hunter to cerebral destroyer

look at what your life has become. you have to go back 12 years to his days as a defensive coordinator to make your argument for marvin lewis as a great coach. but ask yourself, if he's such a great coach, why has he been completely unable to duplicate the ravens' defensive dominance or come close to it in a decade as head coach? if he's so responsible for the ravens' dominance in 2000, why did the ravens defense continue being consistently great for years after he left? he's had plenty of time to build up his own roster in cincinnati and install the defense he wants. why are the bengals consistently in the bottom half of NFL defenses if marvin lewis is such a defensive genius? if marvin lewis is so responsible for the ravens super bowl run 12 years ago, why haven't the bengals won a single playoff game during his tenure?

and why have you still not answered why we should all appreciate a coach who has a losing career record and ZERO playoff wins in a decade of coaching? because you can't. no one can. the only reason he's even still employed is because the bengals are a joke of a franchise. anywhere else, he would've been fired. but people who know nothing about football-- such as yourself-- look at a guy who's been coaching for a decade and assume it must be because he's a great coach. so any year the bengals do anything at all, you morons try to throw marvin lewis a ticker tape parade and lobby for him as coach of the year. no. he's mediocre. he's been mediocre, at best, for a decade.

losing record. zero first-round byes. zero playoff wins. in a decade. in conclusion, you're an idiot.

And the fact that the Bengals are a joke of a franchise
is exactly why winning there is impossible

And his contributions to building the Ravens' legacy
defense put him in historic conversastions

But in terms of 2012 coach of the year discussion?

He's in them. This Bengals team has 6-win talent, tops.

why has he been completely unable
>to duplicate the ravens' defensive dominance or come close to
>it in a decade as head coach?

Up until three years ago, Mike Brown was making all personnel decisions and basically taking players and coaches he wanted and Lewis didn't. Since he's been able to take charge of getting his type of players and coaches he's had top ten defenses since and has gotten a chance to draft the players he's wanted. Now he don't have that dominance that he had with the Ravens, but now that he's getting what he wants that D is playing a whole helluva lot better

so now the first seven years of marvin lewis's career are all mike brown's fault. so now marvin lewis has had total control over personnel for three years, his team has "6-win talent, tops," yet somehow that's not his fault either. lol.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YHmUXUU2MU

once again, LOSING career record. ZERO first-round byes. ZERO playoff wins. in a DECADE of coaching.

all this plea copping is really sad and pathetic. which is exactly what i'd expect from bengals fans. what's your excuse? oh, right, you're an idiot.

no one wanted the position because they knew going into it Brown would have his hands all over it. Marv even said that unless Brown changed his ways he wouldn't come back. Mike listened, the outcome? In the playoffs three of the past four years. Yeah yeah 0-0-0 we get it, congrats, you pay attention to sports, but damn, any other coach would've given up and said fuck it, they can't work with this shit. At least Lewis had the balls to stick it out and change the culture and have players, the city and fans believe. That's a hell of a lot more than any coach would've stuck around and done.

marvin lewis is not a good coach. sorry, he just isn't. and the bengals aren't sniffing a super bowl as long as he's there. you know this as well as i do. all the excuses for why the last decade of bengals football is everyone else's fault, why marvin lewis is a borderline hall of famer based on one great season as a coordinator on some other team 12 years ago, it's ridiculous. it's sad.

the fact is, he hasn't won a playoff game in ten years. no other franchise in football would accept that from a head coach. five years in, no playoff wins, you get your walking papers. whisenhunt took the cards to the super bowl four years ago and just got fired. andy reid has a career record of 37 games OVER .500 and just got fired. that's how it works in the NFL. good enough isn't good enough.

and good coaches hit the ground running. they find success early. cowher won his division five out of his first six years and took the steelers to the super bowl in year four. tomlin won his division two out of his first four years and took the steelers to the super bowl twice. marvin lewis has won his division twice in ten years (there's only FOUR teams in the division, mind you), has a losing career record, and hasn't won a single playoff game. the fact that he's still the bengals head coach should be an embarrassment.

but instead you've got know-nothings like O_E and understandable loyalists such as yourself going in the exact opposite direction and lobbying for him as coach of the year anytime the bengals don't wet the bed. it's ridiculous. as a steelers fan, i'd love nothing more than for lewis to get a ticker tape parade every season while he continues winning nothing, but this is getting too sad to watch now. demand better. cincy deserves better. this is the city of the big red machine. this is the city that had enough good sense to scrap harry's law two seasons in. show the same judgment with marvin lewis. stop enabling his mediocrity and find somebody who knows how to win.

Or any of the three or four Bengals threads there are lol. I've always said Marvin isn't a good coach. He makes poor decisions and has terrible time management. But as a judge of talent and being a motivator he's great. That's why if the Bengals ever decide to go the GM route he'd be better served in that position and bring in a better coach. I'm not even lobbying for him to be coach of the year either. I agree with you that it should be Carroll or even Arians.

And I don't know if you actually keep up with the Bengals (and since you're a Steelers fan I doubt you really do) but once Marv leaves it'll probably be a consistent 3-13 team again instead of the mediocre 8-8 then once in a while 10-6 team that we are because he's the only coach Brown has ever trusted. With a better x's and o's coach this year, we would've beaten Dallas and not shit the bed against Miami. Hell, Tomlin did his best Lewis impression in that last game and I felt sorry for you all cause that was Marv's worst game as a coach...and that's saying a lot, lol.

I'm not enabling dude's mediocrity and never have. The only time he deserved coach of the year is when he swept the division. Being a great motivator only takes you so far. He's finally getting players to want to come to Cincinnati and not just for a paycheck (once again, that motivation tactic). Luckily he's got damn good DC in Zimmer and Gruden has his moments, but its only his second year. In a typical season he loses about 5 games on his own because of his shortcomings as a coach. I'd much rather have a better coach, of course, but as long as Brown is there Marv is the right choice cause Brown is stubborn and I don't think he'd give up a tenth of the power to anyone else that he's given up to Lewis.

*edit: even look at what phenompryus said in the post I replied to. Any Bengal fan will tell you that Lewis isn't a good coach and would rather have better. What you're saying isn't far fetched or new or anything any Bengals fan hasn't already said.

of sticking with a guy whose ceiling is 10 or 11 wins and a quick exit from the playoffs. i mean, what's really the difference between a 6-10 and a 10-6 season where you make the playoffs but get ousted in the first round? one extra game. probably on the road. that you lose. is that really worth holding on to for dear life? yeah, you're right, the next guy might send the team back to the basement. or he might be belichick 2.0 (high frame rate 3D cameras) and win three super bowls. personally, i'd rather roll the dice, 'cause marvin lewis definitely ain't that guy.

As good a coach as Lovie Smith is, do you think he could get 10 or more wins out of that roster? I think he could do the same if not better.

made the gutsy call of starting the season with the 3rd round rookie QB over the buzzy free agent QB. stuck with wilson through a rocky first half. hawks now headed to the playoffs on a five-game winning streak (7-1 second half), wilson 4th in the league in both QB rating and YPA, lynch 3rd in the league in rushing, defense 1st in the league in PPG (4th in YPG).

it's pete carroll.

I have trouble with this though.

His lack of emotion to both good and bad things rubs me the wrong way.

His trouble with consistency is a problem.

The emergence of both of his coordinators, Mike Zimmer and Jay Gruden, have also greatly helped him out the past couple years.

Of course, Red Rifle and AJ help too.

though some of those were headcases (Henry, Thurman, Brooks, early Rey).

But his decision making leaves a lot to be desired. Terrible at challenging calls and hands down has the worst time management in the league (zero timeouts by the end of the 3rd against Dallas...all called by him).

I'd like him in a GM role and let Zim be HC and move Carrier or Gunther to DC. I know that's likely not to happen though cause Brown wants to be his dad, Al Davis, and a cheaper and less famous version of Jerry Jones. He's not giving up his personnel position.

No, he just doesn't respond to the *media* with nonsense

You see how well that being "passionate" shit served the
New York Jets. It grows tiresome and is disingenuous

>The emergence of both of his coordinators, Mike Zimmer and Jay
>Gruden, have also greatly helped him out the past couple

Jay Gruden's offensive brilliance masterminded a mediocre
offense

And Marvin Lewis was architect of the 2000 Ravens defense,
one of the best of all-time. So he knows defense.

Besides, when white head coaches succeed, we know
how to not give all the credit to coordinators, so
while we are talking about consistency, let's start
with how we give credit to coaches for failure/success

Marvin Lewis won 10 games with a team with 6 win talent.

Period.

>Of course, Red Rifle and AJ help too.

Red Rifle didn't play so well this year. The offense
sputtered mostly.

They had a Patriots reject at running back that no one
thought particularly highly of (who had a nice season)

That team plays tough and together

let's do this one more time, since you seem to be a little slow.

- tomlin has won more CHAMPIONSHIPS in six years (one) than marvin lewis has won PLAYOFF GAMES in ten years (zero).

- tomlin has been to more SUPER BOWLS in six years (two) than marvin lewis has been to AFC DIVISIONAL ROUNDS in ten years (never and probably never will).

- tomlin has WON more playoff games in six years (five, 5-3 record) than lewis has even COACHED in ten (four, 0-4 record).

- tomlin's career WINNING percentage is .656 (63-33), lewis's career LOSING percentage is .496 (79-80-1).

in no way, shape, or form does this comparison work for you.

whining about jay gruden's offense won't save you (btw, i love how it's jay gruden's offense when they lose, but it would've been marvin lewis's offense had they won). whining about the bengals overachieving with their "6-win talent" won't help you (also love how you completely absolve lewis of building a team with 6-win talent).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YHmUXUU2MU

you think a guy who hasn't won a playoff game in ten years, has never gotten his team to the divisional round, and has a losing career record is "the least appreciated coach, maybe ever." you're an idiot. you made a dumb post. you lost. be a man about it.
