he can. Sal was like "I'm not so sure about that, Mike". Dude went on spittin some shit. Said in Andy's last 4 seasons he's 33-31...in Rick Kotite's four seasons he was 36-28. They went back and forth to the point that they had to cut Sal off cuz the segment was over.

Jets fired GM Mike Tannenbaum.

In a statement, owner Woody Johnson also announced that the Jets would retain head coach Rex Ryan. "Rex Ryan will remain the Head Coach of our football team," Johnson said. "I believe that he has the passion, the talent, and the drive to successfully lead our team." Firing Tannenbaum was a no-brainer move for the Jets, whose roster deteriorated quicker than any organization's in football during the last four seasons of Tannenbaum's seven years on the job. The Jets went to the AFC title game in 2009 and 2010, but slipped to 8-8 in 2011 and 6-10 in 2012, becoming a legitimately bad team this season. Ultimately, Tannenbaum was a "cap guy" whose decision making on Mark Sanchez's contract will hold the Jets hostage into 2013. Tannenbaum was thoroughly clueless when it came to player evaluation. Johnson will set his sights on a new GM willing to keep Rex as head coach.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

rex had a hand in picking all the players since he's been here. Now you're gonna have a GM who is gonna want to bring in his own coach leading to more disfunction. loljetslol.

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/8795543/kansas-city-chiefs-fire-romeo-crennel-not-gm-scott-pioli

The Kansas City Chiefs will fire coach Romeo Crennel on Monday, but not general manager Scott Pioli, at least not now, according to league sources.

The Chiefs finished 2-14 and earned the top pick in the 2013 NFL draft.

In the preseason, the Chiefs had been predicted to finish near the top of the AFC West. But injuries and ineffective plays derailed them, along with tragedy off the field, when Jovan Belcher killed his girlfriend before committing suicide at the team's practice facility on Dec. 1.

The Chiefs offense struggled mightily this season and Crennel benched starting quarterback Matt Cassel for Brady Quinn. He also fired himself as defensive coordinator and appointed Gary Gibbs to the same role. But neither change sparked the team.

The 65-year-old Crennel, who was promoted by Kansas City to replace Todd Haley during the 2011 season, has had just one winning season in five years as an NFL head coach and has a 28-55 career record.

Pioli, 47, joined the Chiefs in 2009 after nine seasons with the Patriots, where he helped to build New Englands dynasty. But he has failed to turn around the Chiefs, who are 23-40 in his four seasons.

One of Pioli's first significant moves in 2009 was trading for Cassel, who'd been impressive as a fill-in for injured Patriots starter. Pioli proceeded to sign Cassel to a six-year, $63 million deal.

The Chiefs haven't won a playoff game since 1993. This season was Kansas Citys fifth losing season in six years.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

Dude bet the farm on Matt Cassel and failed miserably...he also gave away 2 of the better young corners in the league. Not to mention he doesn't want to resign one of their few playmakers in Dwayne Bowe (who I'll take in a heartbeat on the Jets)

I don't think ANY coach would be able to survive any of that. Not copping pleas for Crennel, but Pioli definitely should've been axed too

http://espn.go.com/chicago/nfl/story/_/id/8795815/chicago-bears-fire-lovie-smith-missing-playoffs-report

Report: Bears fire Lovie SmithUpdated: December 31, 2012, 11:05 AM ETESPN.com news services Recommend360Tweet112Comments163EmailPrintThe Chicago Bears fired coach Lovie Smith on Monday, NFL.com is reporting.

The Bears missed the playoffs for the fifth time in the last six seasons despite starting this season 7-1.

The Bears finished 10-6 but were denied a playoff spot when the Vikings beat the Packers on Sunday.

The 54-year-old Smith, who led the Bears to the Super Bowl after the 2006 season, was 81-63 over eight regular seasons and was 3-3 in the playoffs.

Smith was under contract through 2013, and new general manager Phil Emery did not engage the coach in contract talks on an extension during the season.

Smith was particularly criticized for Chicago's inability to beat Green Bay. The Bears have lost eight of their last nine against the Packers and six straight.

The other big issue was the Bears' poor finishes under Smith. Chicago lost seven straight December games since 2010 before snapping its skid with a Week 16 victory over the Cardinals. During Smith's nine seasons, the Bears were 17-19 in December.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Usually when you fire a coach you want somebody better. Lovie has made some bad choices for assistant coaches and that's all on him. However, when Lovie's teams didn't make the playoffs they weren't embarrassingly bad. His teams were always competitive.

Also, getting 10 wins in that division with an aging defense isn't a bad look. Again, I would put some of this on the GM because they haven't given Cutler much of an o-line to work with.

Lovie won't have any problem finding a new gig.

Not saying anything bad about Lovie
But Rex got 6 wins out of that offense...and their D wasn't bad at all. The fact that he got wins with the most turnover prone QB in the league is still a testament to his coaching.

Should get in line for Norv's OC services though...but Rex didn't deserve the axe. Tannenbaum deserved the axe though.

There are several backups who've earned the right to start. Tyrod Taylor and Alex Smith are guys who bring stability to the position and are cheap. We're not in a position to draft Geno anyway.

All Lovie needs after that is a legit #1 wide receiver.

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/browns-set-interview-kelly-153353750--nfl.html

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Chip Kelly is close to taking his fast-paced offense to the NFL.

A person familiar with the negotiations says the Cleveland Browns are nearing a deal with Oregon's offensive mastermind to be their next coach.

The Browns interviewed Kelly on Friday and the Ducks coach was supposed to meet with Philadelphia in Arizona. However, a person familiar with the interviews says the Eagles are ''heading in another direction'' because Kelly is nearing a deal with Cleveland.

That person, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team isn't discussing its negotiations publicly, said the Eagles planned to interview several other candidates regardless of any conversations with Kelly............

Here are the QB's this franchise has had start games since they drafted Larry Fitzgerald.

Josh McCown
Shaun King
John Navarre
Kurt Warner
Matt Leinart
Derek Anderson
John Skelton
Max Hall
Kevin Kolb
Ryan Lindley
Brian Hoyer

The guys not named Kurt Warner are some of the saddest NFL QB options of the last decade.

Since 2001 when Steve Smith was drafted, here are the QBs that started for Carolina

Chris Weinke
Matt Lytle
Rodney Peete
Randy Fasani
Jake Delhomme
Brian St. Pierre
Matt Moore
Vinny Testaverde
David Carr
Jimmy Clausen

I have a fear that Cam might end up like one of these guys.

to spite his face by cutting Leinart after Warner was gone even though he'd outplayed Derek Anderson's wack ass in preseason.

When that fails miserably he overpays laughably for Kolb.

Kolb continues to get hurt, other QB's suck, all the sudden four years have passed & you're deservedly out on your ass.

This is the one I don't get. He flamed out in KC. Then his next job as OC for the Steelers, he appears to be flaming out there too. Big Ben cannot stand him and the Steeler's offense seemed to take a big step backwards.

If AZ were smart they'd realize their next coach should be their DC. Plus who doesn't want to see a coach in the corporate NFL rocking braids. It would lead to all sorts of mad making.

Buffalo Bills hire Doug Marrone to address offense
By Kareem Copeland

The Buffalo Bills hired Syracuse coach Doug Marrone on Sunday morning, NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported. The move directly speaks to the organization's offensive issues.

"I think that's a great hire," NFL Network analyst Brian Billick said on "First on the Field." "He brings that pedigree that's kind of popular now, a substantial pro background with that mix of college."

Marrone's most significant NFL experience was three years as the Saints' offensive coordinator from 2006-08. He was the first offensive coordinator hired by Sean Payton when he and Drew Brees went to New Orleans. The Saints made the playoffs in 2006 for the first time since 2000. They posted the No. 1 total offense twice and a Top 5 scoring offense twice in those three years.

Marrone also coached the New York Jets offensive line from 2002-05 and went 25-25 in four years at Syracuse.

The Bills have been a mess offensively, as quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick has shown flashes but been wildly inconsistent. The Bills have been a Top 20 scoring offense just once since 2004. Addressing the quarterback situation and better utilizing C.J. Spiller will be the first two tasks for Marrone.

A 6-10 record proves that the Bills certainly had their defensive woes, but AFC East teams need a legit offense to compete with the New England Patriots.

Eagles. Now I really, really hope the Eagles can close the deal on Chip.

Marrone is an excellent hire because he has experience at all levels. He's spent time both in the NFL and the college game. He has experience as a head coach. He did a pretty stellar job at Syracuse. Also, he's an offense guy and the Bills have been putrid on offense for years. The NFL is becoming more and more an offense dominated game so it makes sense to get a guy like Marrone to lead your team.

the timing of his announcement that he was coming back to Oregon is ironic...

I didn't see Chip Kelly taking over a team that would require a huge overhaul which Philly, Cleveland, and Buffalo required.

and he's not in this for money, that's quite clear. The only money he secured from Oregon after the TB flirtation last year went straight to his assistants, and no matter what the press is saying right now about Phil coming to the rescue late, my understanding is that CK already has a ton from Nike, Inc. Money isn't what he's after and it's not what is keeping him at Oregon.

with no GM hired as of yet...

By the far the best fit for him and he wouldn't have to rebuild compared to the other franchises mentioned...

Top 10 Defense...and decent talent on offense which includes Cam Newton, who could probably run that oregon offense...

As soon as Rivera got the nod...it didn't take long for Chip to stay in Oregon

In response to Reply # 0

I think itd be a great hire. Way better fit for the city of Philly than Kelly.

Appearing on 97.5 The Fanatic in Philadelphia, ESPN's Ron Jaworski said the Eagles have not reached out to Jon Gruden, but claimed Gruden would be interested in their head-coaching vacancy.
Gruden is a hot name every hiring season, but he seems content on manning the Monday night booth for ESPN. Of course, former MNF sidekick Jaws would probably know better than anyone if Gruden is willing to leave. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported last week that no teams had set up interviews with the former Raiders and Bucs head coach, and that still appears to be the case. Jon's brother, Jay, the Bengals OC, is a name that has been mentioned for Philly's top job, and Broncos OC Mike McCoy is another name to keep an eye on.

they know the people would have Gruden's back.

They also know they won't get credit for being superfuckingbrilliantgoldstandardchampionshipscourtingfootballmen if they just go ahead & make an obvious move despite the fact that this search is bordering on shitshow already.

I really am growing to hate Jeffrey Lurie & Howie Roseman.

Chuckie will take this job and do well in it but I guarantee they won't ever really seriously interview him let alone offer it to him.

Watch this bum draft Matt Barkley out of SC and set us back even further. Is it too late to make predictions for next year? We might win one game.

I'd take Mike McCoy over Chud any day of the week. THIS IS SOME BULLSHIT. Trent Richardson's career might suffer under this guy. We saw what happened to Jonanthan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams. FUCK THIS DECISION for real.

We're going to rank 32nd in offense next year. This is the worst hiring decision of the offseason.

Carolina might as well fire Rivera now...

Chud is going to take people from Carolina's staff...

That being said, Chud is going to be a good coach for Cleveland...

Carolina's rush offense was in the top 10 in the NFL in 2011 and 2012 so Trent Richardson is going to be fine. The read-option won't be happening too much in Cleveland so you'll be fine.

And Chud is doing something that Rivera refused to do...

He hired a guy with head coaching experience on his staff (Norv Turner)...

I expect Cleveland to be better next year...

and it worked...

No players have commented on him leaving yet...NONE...

They stood up for Rivera...but when Chud leaves...nobody is saying that they are going to miss him at all...its quiet in Charlotte...

I think Steve Smith could strongly consider retirement at this point

but I think losing Kelly would be devastating for ND. I mean, look at all the years of relative wackness they experienced. The failed coaching hires. They finally get a guy who looks the part, talks a good game and by all accounts is a pretty good coach. Sure, they got manhandled the other night, but they're relevant again. People talk about them again. Where do they go if he leaves? Shit would be tragic for them. I really hope for their sake he's just trying to get some more loot.

The problem is Notre Dame is TERRIBLE at conducting coaching searches, almost worse than michigan.

Brian Kelly is a good recruiter (but again, ND recruits itself as long as you aren't a complete bumbling idiot) but he leaves a lot to be desired on the coaching end.

I wouldn't even rank him in the top 10 of current CFB coaches to be honest...all this NFL talk is cracking me up.

He had undefeated regular seasons at Cincinnati & ND within three years of joining both places.

He might not be a brilliant in-game tactician but this is a sport where Les Miles & Mack Brown have titles.

This dude is just willingly getting played publicly while helping all these guys get paid.

They apparently did interview Lovie, there's not much buzz about it tho.

Now that they flopped trying to make the college splash they're gonna go the assistant coach route & spin like they have/had a vision all along.

If they're bungling this because of insisting on forcing GM Roseman & QB-of-the-future Foles on the incoming guy, I'm not surprised why they're getting no traction with candidates.

Bet that phone call to Cowher was real short if that's the case.

And if they're inquiring about Cowher, why they won't even call Jon Gruden when every one of their 'advisory team' is telling them to do so & Chuckie is low-key campaigning for the job makes no sense to me.

These motherfuckas have talked to Mike Nolan & NewBumBillsCoach Marrone in person yet they can't even break off a phone-call to the agent of a still relatively young proven coach whose career started here, is still plugged into both the pro & college level and actually wants to come here?

I don't get it.......even worse I don't really believe the Eagles' brass do either.

Mainly Jon Gruden but Jay + Lovie is another common sense approach I would wanna see happen.

Doubt any one of those is happening with the lack of movement going on. Wondering wtf is Laurie waiting on.

and if they did a Lovie/Jay combo without Jon then Lovie's the top dawg in that scenario.

None of that is gonna happen tho.

They're interviewing Gus Bradley (Seattle's DC) in ATL today after the game. At this point, he's starting to sound good.

If they end up with Bruce Arians I'm going to lose my mind.

I just don't understand not even *contacting* Gruden by phone or through intermediaries when you're talking to every other clown out there and he's got a ring that he earned by taking it from the Eagles in their best-bet season of Lurie's entire tenure.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/01/13/glazer-jets-cant-give-g-m-position-away/

"Glazer says the Jets are calling back candidates who already have turned them down, asking them to reconsider. Meanwhile, guys they wanted who had other options (like Dave Caldwell and Tom Telesco) opted to go elsewhere.

So where will they go from here? Adam Schefter of ESPN reported earlier today that the Jets plan to have follow-up discussions this week with two of the candidates who haven’t turn them down (yet), and that the name to watch is former Bears G.M. Jerry Angelo.

Making the job unattractive is the circus surrounding the franchise, from being forced to keep coach Rex Ryan for at least one year to the quarterback situation to a salary-cap mess, the job is viewed as not attractive."

It's hard for a brutha to get a HC job in the NFL.

Raheem Morris got in on the fumes of the Mike Tomlin hire. Hiring a young and up and coming black coach was in vogue. He was quickly fired.

Leslie Frazier got in by default. He's done a good job.

Romeo Crennel. Ehhhhh.

Lovie Smith got a raw deal, and I expected him to get another HC job, but teams didn't like what they saw apparently.

Marvin Lewis is always on the verge of getting fired but then he'll have a rally the troops year. Plus no one wants to work for that family.

Ron Rivera in Carolina should have been fired. He's still in there.

That's it for the last few years. Damn. But compared to where it was things are getting better.

The issue is that the league is trending towards offensive coaches adn there aren;t alot of minority coordinators in the NFL on that side of the ball.
