The cult of Eric Bledsoe
By Kevin Arnovitz

Andrew D. Bernstein/NBAE/Getty Images
Eric Bledsoe: Out of the shadows and into the spotlight.

Watching Eric Bledsoe warm up on the Staples Center floor an hour before tipoff is an underwhelming experience. Bledsoe isn’t phoning it in or disengaged as he’s fed pass after pass to launch shot after shot from midrange. It’s just that the exercise is so repetitive and orderly, he might as well be icing a hundred cupcakes.

The full effect of Bledsoe can be experienced only when the clock’s running, because Bledsoe is fueled by live basketball -- the super-animated stuff we see in the NBA. Most players expend energy when they’re asked to chase people around and sprint the floor and collide with enormous bodies and leap every five seconds for one reason or another and occasionally land awkwardly on thick wood or men holding large cameras, but not Bledsoe. He actually gets stronger, faster and more lethal as he chews up the court at warp speed.

As a result of this peculiar immunity, Bledsoe has become the NBA’s newest cult hero, the kind of player who causes viewers to talk at their LCDs and to insist that non-fans in the house come into the room to witness this pure testimony to basketball.

Bledsoe didn’t come into the league with much fanfare. He was the other guard on Kentucky’s young, talented 2009-10 squad led by John Wall, the No. 1 pick in the 2010 draft, and faced a familiar rap -- not pointy enough to succeed at the 1, but without the shot or size to play the 2. Off the floor, Bledsoe had little of Wall’s charisma and what’s called “makeup” in draftspeak.

On draft night, Bledsoe was plucked at No. 18, just behind Luke Babbitt and Kevin Seraphin. Clippers management, preparing for life after Baron Davis, ranked Bledsoe in their top 10, and dealt a protected future first-round pick to Oklahoma City for Bledsoe’s rights. That pick was conveyed to Boston last June and became Fab Melo at No. 22.

Bledsoe was raw during his first season, and injured for a good portion of his second. When he saw floor time, Bledsoe was a frenetic blur and his ball hawking showed up in the Clippers’ numbers, where a below-average defensive team was 8.5 points stingier per 100 possessions with Bledsoe on the court.

For many, the introduction to Bledsoe came during the Clippers’ first-round playoff series with Memphis last spring. Stuff like this is routine for Bledsoe now, but the Memphis series was the first time most NBA fans saw a 6-foot-1 guard block a 6-foot-10 big man at the rim. Bledsoe also tortured Mike Conley, who posted a plus-48 with Bledsoe on the bench, but a minus-34 when Bledsoe was on the court over the seven games.

There are few better ways to obtain cult status than to be denied rightful playing time. The #Free hashtag begins to surface before a player’s name, as it did in that series for Bledsoe, who played seven and six minutes respectively in the Clippers’ Game 2 and Game 5 losses. With Randy Foye struggling on both ends and Bledsoe’s influence obvious, what started out as a clarion call became a full-fledged campaign for Bledsoe among fans as well as management, which fed the coaching staff the numbers.

Seven months later, Bledsoe has a devoted, even fanatical following. He’s the rare NBA player who is a darling to both statheads who value data and basketball mystics who live for the improbable. The overlap between “daredevilish” and “efficient” in the NBA Venn Diagram is a small space, but Bledsoe resides there -- and his niche appeal is becoming something much larger.

Teammates nicknamed Bledsoe "Mini LeBron" and Chris Paul’s father calls him "Little Hercules," though the best prototype for Bledsoe might be Dwyane Wade, a relentless, slashing attacker who leverages his strength to exploit his quickness, and vice versa.

Like Wade, Bledsoe takes a ton of chances on both ends of the floor, but has both the instincts and athleticism to offset that risk. Gamble in the passing lane, but come up empty? No worries, because Bledsoe can recover, even if it means absorbing a bump or three in traffic as he races to catch up with his man at the rack. If Bledsoe’s bet is successful -- and nobody in the NBA has had more success this season -- then it pays out.

Fans love risk-takers because risk produces uncertainty, and uncertainty produces suspense and suspense is why we tune in to games, follow a good drama series and tolerate electoral politics.

But NBA coaches aren’t fans. They’re men who want to know what they’re going to get from a ballplayer, and they’re slow to trust someone whose game precipitates unpredictability. If a coach has conventional sensibilities about the NBA game, then he probably wants his perimeter players to be able to stretch the floor with the threat of a long-range shot.

Bledsoe offers Vinny Del Negro -- or any coach he plays for -- none of that comfort. As part of a backcourt already populated by Chris Paul, Jamal Crawford, Chauncey Billups (when healthy) and Willie Green (when Billups isn’t), Bledsoe is averaging only 18.6 minutes per game, despite excelling in whatever metric you want to look at -- basic per minutes stats, Player Efficiency Rating (PER), plus-minus, offensive and defensive rating per 100 possessions, win shares per 48 minutes, etc.

Del Negro has a lot of mouths to feed on the league’s deepest roster, and it’s not as if the current rotation isn’t working. The Clippers enter Tuesday night’s game at Chicago at 14-6, and rarely field a lineup that's given up more points than it has allowed this season. Increasingly over the past week, the starters have played as an intact unit, as have the reserves, including Bledsoe. There’s a certain symmetry to the substitution patterns, which is probably helpful in a locker room where individual expectations with regard to minutes have to be tempered.

Necessity is the mother of invention, and a .700 winning percentage tends to solidify patterns, not upend them. The Clippers are going to win a lot of games this season whether Bledsoe plays 14, 18, 24 or 30 minutes. Del Negro isn’t looking for excuses to take minutes away from a veteran and hand them to Bledsoe. But if Del Negro wants a reason, sliding some of Green’s minutes to Bledsoe would undoubtedly improve the Clippers’ woeful rebounding numbers. Bledsoe ranks second to only Kyle Lowry in rebounding rate among point guards (and would actually place in the top 5 among regulars at the shooting guard position, where you can find Green in the bottom quarter).

Maybe one day, an uncertain situation will call for an unknown quantity. In the meantime, Bledsoe presides as the NBA’s most exciting novelty act. The scarcity of his court time lends even more appeal to his pursuit of thievery, mid-air suspension, driving jams and the general chaos that invariably triggers those outbursts of spontaneity -- moments more conducive to risk than control.

After this first year, I thought he wouldn't ever be much more than a backup. Now I'm thinking he could be a mini-Gary Payton in two years. He learnin good right now though under Chauncey and CP3.

The article makes it sound like there's Bledsanity out in LA

He can ball, and he is probably better than quite a few starting PG's in the league. Dallas might want to inquire about his services, maybe the other tenants in the building (LA Lakers)

His confidence is through the roof now.

Vinny has also given him free range to go HAM, letting him know that he's not gonna hold turnovers against him. He understands that the turnovers come with the positives in his game. They're part of the growing process and they'll keep dropping as he develops.

I'm impressed with the kid...you can tell CP3 and Chauncey are rubbing off on him...he's getting better with the jumper, and he's fast as hell. He's also a very good face up defender.

I don't think there's enough minutes for him on the Clipper team though...unless Chauncey hangs them up. It's a good problem to have though

Vinny likes having guards that can shoot and spread the floor. Bledsoe's J still isn't a threat. That's why Willie Green gets so many minutes; and by "so many" I mean more than 0.

The ball pressure Bled puts on, especially against 2nd string point guards, with the versatility of Odom and Barnes on the back end, not to mention the outlet passing if Odom or Barnes or Bled get a board.

You have to think that Crawford has the easiest job in the league, your job is to guard the worst player on the court (while being surrounded by 4 above average defenders) and take whatever the fuck shot you want on offense. And when CP3 is in the game, you get to have him set you up for looks. No wonder this dude looks reborn.

where the bench just didn't bring it.

It'll be interesting to see how Vinny works things out if Chauncey and Hill ever come back.

Still pissed we got Aminu instead of him in the CP3 trade. Word is Clips brass was so high on him that they made the Hornets choose between he and Gordon though.

Assuming CP3 re-signs on a max deal with the Clips, they will be forced to move Bledsoe next year, or lose him for nothing. I'm really hoping we get in on that. I love his game.

Minny's lotto pick was seen as a must get for us obviously, and I don't think anyone knew that Bledsoe was THIS good. But damn, can't say I wouldn't take Bled over Rivers in a heartbeat today.

In response to Reply # 22

Rivers shouldn't run the point...they should just groom him to be the 2 guard.
Bledsoe would definitely help a lot, but Vasquez has been solid. I think getting Bledsoe and having Grevis come off the bench would be a very good core, assuming Rivers can get his game off the ground.
Plus, you would still have Gordon, assuming he comes back motivated. That's not a bad guard rotation

Vasquez has a great future as one of the best backup point guards in the NBA, and I would welcome that on my squad. But he should not be playing starter minutes, his flaws are just too exposed.

Bledsoe/Gordon with Vasquez/Rivers coming off the bench...yeah I'll take that moving forward.

His contract is up after 14/15. If he develops into what it looks like he's turning into, there will be a spot for him and he'll get paid. The only way I see the Clippers trading him before then is if there is a young talented SF with as much potential available.

Blake and Crawford (last year), with CP that'll be 3. If Bledsoe continues improving at this pace he'll be as good as Westbrook (I said IF), and if he's that good, he'll get paid. A Paul/Bledoe starting backcourt doesn't sound that ridiculous to me.

Which he is absolutely NOT getting to. It is guaranteed someone offers him a healthy RFA deal that he will sign after next season, and it will be up to the Clips to match.

Which they likely won't be able to afford to do (assuming CP3 and Blake stay on max deals), unless Donald Sterling dies before then.

Their best bet is to trade him during the season next year, or ride it out with him and hope for a sign and trade in the following offseason.

CP3+ Crawford+ Bledsoe in 14-15 and 15-16 would be about that.

That leaves nothing but the Mid-level, rookie deals and minimums left for starting SF and your entire bench.

I mean, I understand if they keep him. Tough to let a guy like that go (though OKC just did for these exact reasons). Probably better to get some assets and spend that money on positions of need.

1. George is getting a bigger payday than Bledsoe. It would be a worse situation than this, and no way Clips could afford him. Regardless, the Pacers would never make that trade. Cmon.

2. GS isn't trading Klay for Bledsoe, they have Curry at PG. Thompson is a true SG, and their backcourt is set. Why would they do that trade?

He's a great backup, but he plays like a backup. He's a classic great bench guy to me: his game has limited dimensions and plays with max effort every minute he's on the floor. Spark plug who makes good things happen.

To go from 20 minutes per game to 30+, would he keep up that kind of intensity? He would have to since that's what his effectiveness is based on. I think it would be tough.

Unless Phoenix is taking Pekovic's contract off our hands, but I can't believe they would want that.

He's good at scoring when someone needs to,but he just doesn't have the court awareness for a starter.

And besides,on the Bucks, they need someone to run pick and rolls with Giannis and Jabari. That is NOT BK's strength.

I like the kid,but I also know what he is. And him scoring 15 a game off the bench will make him more valuable than he ever could be as a starter due to his deficiencies.

This Bucks team isn't being built for this, next or even the year after. They're being built for when LeBron and KD are on their downswing and its the Brow and hopefully Giannis and Jabari's League. And a super defender like Bledsoe at 28 leading those kids would be amazing. And if you had BK to shore up bench scoring, you may legitimately have a contender some day

I compared him most to Terry when coming out.

I don't like when he goes I to his hero ball routine, but I love his confidence and those traits do lend themselves to being a bench scorer.

I'm still holding out though to see if he can make another leap.

Wolves Make Final Push For Bledsoe

With just days before the start of training camp, the Minnesota Timberwolves are making a final push to acquire restricted free-agent guard Eric Bledsoe in a sign-and-trade with the Phoenix Suns, sources told ESPN.com.

Fruitless contract talks with the Suns soured point guard Eric Bledsoe's appetite for playing in Phoenix.

The Wolves are offering Bledsoe the four-year, $63 million maximum level contract that he has been seeking, sources said, but because of cap restrictions, the only way he can join the team as currently constructed is through a sign-and-trade deal. Bledsoe and the Suns have been in a stalemate all summer after the team offered him a four-year, $48 million deal in July.

This is a renewal of talks that have stretched over the past several months. The teams had discussions involving a Kevin Love trade that would involve Bledsoe but never made serious traction on a deal.

The Wolves, who acquired No. 1 overall pick Andrew Wiggins after trading Love to the Cleveland Cavaliers last month, see Bledsoe as a strong running mate to their new franchise player and have made some aggressive offers to Phoenix to try to get them to accept a deal.

Bledsoe has made it clear to the Suns and any other team that he was only interested in signing a max contract and otherwise would sign a one-year, $3.7 million qualifying offer with the Suns that would enable him to become an unrestricted free agent next year.

The relationship between Bledsoe and the Suns has eroded over the contract impasse, and the Suns signed free-agent guard Isaiah Thomas to a four-year, $27 million deal in July after drafting guard Tyler Ennis in the first round in June.

Bledsoe averaged 17.7 points and 5.5 assists in 43 games for the Suns last season after being traded from the Los Angeles Clippers. He suffered a midseason meniscus injury to his right knee and returned after surgery.

Fox 10 in Phoenix earlier reported the Wolves were prepared to make a maximum contract offer to Bledsoe.

Phoenix wouldn't have done it for anything less than Wiggins, and that sure as shit wasn't happening.

The whole point of the Wolves "max contract" (probably leaked by either Flip Saunders or Bledsoe's agent) was to get PHX to take Bledsoe's contract demands seriously (which they did) and to give Flip leverage in Rubio's contract extension (by showing that he's not afraid to go all in on another young PG.)

Haven't heard anything about one, and Bledsoe's only objection to PHX's previous offers was that they weren't enough.

I don't see why they'd trade him now.

but its not necessarily a bad year for 1 year.

Hes been injury prone and heasnt led a team to the playoffs.

I think he gets a pass for no playoffs this year so thats out.
Injury is the bigger question.

Come on Billy...lol

I like that kid...But he's not worth that money unless he's being flipped to another team to be a starter....His injuries over the years make this a weird signing....

But I wish him a healthy season...Because God knows I'm all too aware about injured PG's...

I guess what I meant is will he last to be their starter? And the fact that they got another PG on that team that was killing it makes this strange...It's good that E.B. is getting his money....My main question is what is Phoenix's front office doing?

Someone out there was ready to offer sheet him heavily and so to avoid all that they just handed him the money with the intention of sorting out log jams later. I don't mind the deal, I don't see any better investment of $70M coming Phoenix's way any season soon. When healthy he was a stud for them.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.
