The New Orleans Hornets are expected to change their nickname to the Pelicans as early as the 2013-14 season, numerous sources told Yahoo! Sports.
The Hornets planned to change their nickname since Tom Benson, owner of the New Orleans Saints, purchased the team on April 14. Benson also owns the rights to the nickname Pelicans.

The Hornets also considered the nicknames Krewe (groups of costumed paraders in the annual Mardi Gras carnival in New Orleans) and Brass.
Louisiana is the Pelican State. The brown pelican is the state bird and appears on the state flag and seal, and official state painting. Moreover, the Pelicans played minor league baseball in New Orleans in all but nine seasons from 1887-1959 and in 1977.
Gayle Benson, Benson's wife, told Fox Sports New Orleans recently her preference for new team colors was navy blue, red and gold.
The Hornets came to New Orleans in 2002 from Charlotte. New Orleans has also had an NBA team called the Jazz, which moved to Salt Lake City in 1979.
Some fans of the Charlotte Bobcats are hoping to get their old Hornets nickname back. The Hornets began playing in Charlotte in 1988. Bobcats owner Michael Jordan told The Charlotte Observer he would consider changing it back to Hornets if the name was available.

First off, those things are fucking huge. Even small pelicans are the size of your family dog, and the have fucking wings! Imagine, your dog, if they could fly, and had giant ass air sacs under the beak! That shit is weird!

Secondly, pelicans will surprise the shit out of you. I don't know if any of y'all are water people, but if you're sitting out there on a board in those breakers, those fuckers have a tendency to just drop right out the sky and divebomb some fish right next you! Who does that???

Third, pelicans are mean as shit. They don't give a fuck! Pelicans are not scared of people, and they will troll right up on you if they think they can steal your catch!

Had me rolling up the window like Michael Bolton in Office Space as I *crept* by because this big-ass pelican & his band of merryfuckingmen were on their own schedule and not even angry L.A. commuters who bust shots in freeway traffic had the balls to honk their horn at these evil-looking fuckers.

That was my first & hopefully last pelican experience.

Despite having so much unique culture and a seemingly long list of great name choices, there really weren't many good NBA names.

Krewe is too local, too obscure.
Brass is a bootleg version of the Jazz. Also shortened to 'ass too easily.
Voodoo is an arena league team, and sounds like one.


The absolutely perfect NBA name was stolen from the city and should've never left ala the Supersonics...so this will have to do. If they do a good job on the marketing it will be fine.

Great franchise, great tradition, yeah yeah we know. If the Pelicans had all that it would be a classic franchise name too. The Lakers name became cool from winning, not because its a cool name.

Winning is all that matters. We win, its a great name, simple as that.

On its own it is ridiculous. You cannot see that because the term itself is so ingrained in you with images of superstars and success. But without that historical context its a laughable name for a professional franchise in Los Angeles, not to mention the softest name in the NBA.


I will concede that it flows better than Pelicans, 2 syllables and the "L" sound plays off of "Los."

But with that dumb ass rationale we should be called the Knights, Gnats or Newts. Not a single viable name flows with "New Orleans" in that way.

Except for my darkhorse name, "Night," which nobody seemed to like.
