because the truth is that the biggest gap between MLS and LigaMX is just the paychecks. yes, they're generally more talented, but the gap in talent isn't as big as the $$$.

dude can keep spinning his wheels the same dumb way, but Chivas' epoch remains when they let BOB BRADLEY coach and their best player was SASHA KLEJSTAN.

so yeah, go nuts Chivas -- real American soccer fans gonna stay laughing at you like we always do.

In response to Reply # 18

they swapped from #3 to #2 with Chivas USA, with only Toronto (who they just did a deal with, could have been some handshakes involved, too) in front of them now.

of course, this WOULDN'T be needed to lure either Robbie Findly or Jonathan Bornstein back, because they hold their rights from the expansion draft. Gavin Wilkinson intimated pretty strongly that one of those two will be signed this offseason in the most recent Extra Time Radio, so yeah I'm currently expecting at least two more player additions in the near future as well.

In response to Reply # 36

so I think he was always hesitant about Mix, because based on what I've read Mix + his dad/agent think Mix is a star and want him in a star position. Paulson would have been leery about that.

then I seriously think that Soccer by Ives link above which quotes "sources" was the dad/agent talking to Ives, because mlssoccer.com had another article with dad/agent saying "everything right" about Portland -- he loved the fans, he loved the style of play, great relationship with Caleb Porter, just basically selling Mix to the Portland fan base. meanwhile European press has Mix with Rapid Vienna or possibly staying in Rosenborg. then I think Mix asked for more money than the Timbers were willing to pay (or possibly couldn't because they have 3 DPs with Chara, Valencia and *sigh* Boyd, so they offered right up to the limit of a DP slot and couldn't get it done).

so anyway sounds like Gavin has another target to fill the same slot in case it didn't work, so Paulson is putting the pressure bag on the blabby dad/agent. if he wants to negotiate through the press, Merritt will negotiate through the press.

that's my reading.

and honestly Mix is an unsure thing, but he's intriguing, so I'd love for him to be in Portland. his skillset isn't irreplaceable, though.

what's the story? is there a link? I knew he was with the Railhawks last year but that's basically all I knew about it. I have no idea if he actually has the goods.

basically Traffic Sports has a knack for scooping up young talent to sign with them. they're looking to make good money when/if the kids get picked up by a big team, but it rarely happens. they mostly send them to a bunch of clubs that are owned/operated by Traffic Sports. for instance in Gale's case, almost all the teams he played for - Miami FC (now Ft Lauderdale Strikers), Estoril Praia (Portugal) and Carolina Railhawks - are owned by Traffic. Gale said that he's had offers but they always seemed to "fall through" (basically Traffic was asking to much money) and nothing ever worked out. he's apparently a pretty raw talent but has a chance to be pretty good if he just got some playing time.

Reports: Colombia's Millonarios lining up a six-month loan for Fredy Montero
Posted by Joshua Mayers

UPDATE 10:03 a.m. -- Soccer By Ives is also reporting, through sources, that the Sounders have agreed to send Montero to Millonarios on the six-month loan previously reported by FutbolRed.com.

* * *

Sounders FC forward Fredy Montero could be joining Colombia's Millonarios on a six-month long, according to a report out of the South American country.

FutbolRed.com is reporting that MLS has signed off on a potential deal, which according to the website's source, could be extended for all of 2013 and includes an option to buy for $4.5 million.

The Sounders had no update on a potential loan as of Tuesday morning, which is usually the case before something is made official. This particular move has been rumored for several weeks.

Montero, a 25-year-old native of Barranquilla, Colombia, still needs to return to Seattle to complete paperwork and agree to terms with Millonarios, the report said.

The draw of playing in Copa Libertadores, the South American equivalent of Champions League and one of the biggest tournaments in the world, was apparently a big draw for the Sounders' all-time leading scorer. Playing for the reigning Colombian champs in the event could help Montero's standing with the national team and garner attention of some of the top teams in the world.

Montero has been in South America during the offseason following his marriage ceremony. He has 60 goals for Seattle in all competitions, more than triple the next highest scorer (Steve Zakuani, 19).

It is unsure what the Sounders would get in return, perhaps some allocation money in addition to an open roster space and salary cap relief (admittedly, my knowledge of complex MLS rules regarding a DP loan are lacking).

he shoulda already got SOME tick w/ the national team at least.

i think that's maybe a bigger factor for him than even going to europe.

alot of stupid sounders fans like to badmouth him for underperforming...and that's why those fans are stupid. not saying he couldn't do (have done?) more, but he would SOLELY be responsible for at LEAST 10 points every season. those fans liked to think we'd have been better w/out him. those fans are, as previously mentioned, stupid.

i can't wait to read all the "yay, Montero's gone" comments.

therefore, if we don't do something BIG to fill his shoes, it's a big time L for the team. i have season tix and i'm already like "hmmm...if they dont' do something i'll probably sell some tix" cuz i'd be lying if part of my expectation of winning didn't come from Montero being out there.

Nelsen still plays for QPR in the English Premier League and plans to finish the season with them. that means he won't be at the combine or the draft. he also apparently still plans to play for his national team, New Zealand.

haven't even looked at youtube clips. just not gonna do it.

I remember when we signed Diego Chara I looked up a bunch of clips on him. it was pointless. the Colombian league action just didn't translate to MLS at all and I only discovered what kind of player he is by watching him in person.

so yeah, after the preseason tourney they're gonna re-host in Portland in February I'm sure I'll have tons to say.

http://m.fcdallas.com/news/2013/01/fc-dallas-signs-goalkeeper-raúl-fernández

FRISCO – FC Dallas has signed Peruvian National Team goalkeeper Raúl Fernández, the club announced today. Per team and league policy the terms of the deal will not be disclosed.

“Raúl Fernández is a very athletic goalkeeper who has gained a lot of experience playing internationally with Peru,” said FC Dallas head coach Schellas Hyndman. “He has a strong command of the box and will compete for the starting position with FC Dallas. He is an extremely motivated individual. I expect he will embrace this opportunity.”

Fernández, 27, got his start in the youth system of Universitario de Deportes of the Peruvian first division. He made his professional debut with the club in a 1-1 draw with Union Huaral on July 31, 2005. Fernández would go on to play in 143 matches for Universitario between his debut and 2010. Universitario is regarded as the top club in Peru.

Fernández was signed by OGC Nice of the French first division in December of 2010. The 6-1 goalkeeper appeared in two matches for the four-time French Ligue 1 champions since his debut on Aug. 31, 2011. Fernández backstopped Nice in a 2-1 victory over Toulouse in the third round of Coupe de la Ligue.

A native of Lima, Peru, Fernández has earned 21 international caps with the Peruvian National Team since March 26, 2008.

seemingly had nothing to do with the Armstrong scandal, but i'm sure it didn't help. timing is a little too coincidental.

In response to Reply # 78

where the team was when they made the LIVESTRONG deal to where the team is now is basically a 180 degree turn. it was a bold, creative move when they initially did it and now Lance gave them a free out. no reason Heinemann can't go earn some $ on what he built in KC at this point.

In response to Reply # 84

do their doctors know something we don't? because on the field he's a monster in MLS -- intelligent, technically gifted, dangerously competitive. the ONLY way I would ever move on from a player like Jeff Larentowicz is if I knew something about his physiology that limited him in some way.

Chicago either just came up or Colorado just made a great trade (in retrospect), but only fools give away midfielders of Larentowicz's quality of recent past.

apparently this is just a prototype that they made up to show at the draft. the logo is supposed to be moved down a bit. i also personally think that it should be a little bigger as well. glad to see them with something though.

$3.5M is a pretty clear indicator of the respect MLS is starting to get around the world if that's true. it's not an eye-popping figure, but it's hardly the chump change sales they had to make in the past to get *anything*

I think the most recent CBA changed the way that breaks down, too, where FCD gets something like 75% of that transfer sum (in the past I think it went wholly or almost entirely to MLS itself, as the league was bankrolling a lot of the teams). I don't know if they get to "re-invest" with the way that allocation $ works, but the owner of FCD gets a reward for developing a player ready to graduate the league in Brek.

but enough MLS rules nonsnse -- the real question: how long till Klinsmann tries to take credit for arranging the transfer? lol

they can draft a guy in the supplemental draft and just give him an invite to training camp and the guy's salary structure is different. I think it's something like that. so basically it allows GMs to take a couple days after the draft to re-evaluate how it went and then pick up some bodies they feel they might be useful in camp without having to worry so much about giving them top draft pick salaries.

or I could be wrong about that. but basically I think it's a tool for GMs to try and fix any "mistakes" or take any long shots they might have wanted to take after the SuperDraft proper.

but yeah overall it's probably more of an anachronism of the league from back when teams really had to assemble whole rosters out of college guys, whereas nowadays most GMs are looking aggressively abroad for talent and only plucking the real standouts from American soil early on.

it should be understood that higher early round picks will make more than later round picks.

i also wonder how trialists fit in to all this? like teams seem to be able to invite in whomever to see if they work out with the team. all separate from any drafts.

In response to Reply # 0

http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2013/01/22/crew-sign-brazilian-defender-gl%C3%A1uber-compliment-marshall

The Columbus Crew knew they'd have to strengthen their defensive core this offseason, and they think they may have found the perfect companion for Chad Marshall in the center of defense.

On Tuesday, the Crew announced that they had signed Brazilian defender Gláuber Leandro Honorato Berti, via a Discovery Signing. Per league and club policy, details were not released.

The 29-year-old defender, commonly known as Gláuber, has plenty of international experience and joins the Crew from Rapid Bucharest of the Romanian first division, where he made 46 appearances and scored one goal from 2010-13 across all competitions.

“Gláuber is a world-class international defender who we feel will be a great complement to Chad Marshall, anchoring our central defense," Crew president and GM Mark McCullers said in a statement. "This was a key priority to improve our team in the offseason and we are excited for him to join the club."

Throughout his professional career, Gláuber has also played for Manchester City in the English Premier League, FC Nürnberg of the German Bundesliga and Palmeiras and Clube Atlético Mineiro in his native Brazil.

Gláuber has played one match for the Brazilian national team. The defender’s lone cap came in a 3-0 victory for Brazil against Guatemala in a friendly on April 27, 2005.

The center back is set to join the Black & Gold for preseason training this week in Bradenton, Fla., pending receipt of his International Transfer Visa (ITC).

I think Chivas was really counting on him being an offensive engine in midfield last year and that resulted in Robin Fraser getting fired en route to a historically horrible offensive season (even with Juan Aguedelo up top) and the owner coming back firing that Chivas will only succeed by becoming more hispanic.

so yeah -- I'm fine saying Nick LaBrocca is responsible for bringing racism back to MLS. way to go Nick!

http://www.lionofviennasuite.com/2013/1/18/3890606/nigel-reo-coker-portland-timbers-red-bull-ny-mls-bolton-wanderers

Are you ready to laugh a bit and maybe scratch your head? Rumor has it (via Prost Amerika) that Nigel Reo-Coker, yes, that central midfielder we all know and "love," is apparently on his way stateside to play for one of two MLS teams after turning down offers in Turkey. But wait, we haven't even hit the best part. Here's the kicker: he's apparently been promised a spot on the United States Men's National Team by head coach Jurgen Klinsmann. Yep, you read that correctly.

Reo-Coker just left Championship side Ipswich Town last week and has burned bridges with four separate teams in England. According to the Prost report, Reo-Coker has turned down offers from Turkish sides Bursaspor (where current USMNTer Maurice Edu is on loan from Stoke) and Kasimpasa in order to move to MLS for three years. The two MLS sides vying for Reo-Coker's hands are supposedly Red Bull New York (Tim Ream's former club) and Portland Timbers.

This is where it gets a bit interesting. Nigel Reo-Coker's wife is a Brooklyn, NY native and was complaining about issues with her UK visa on twitter:

@SNickyy
20 more business days till I get my passport/visa?! Expedite service my assss! Just wanna be with my husband!!😔 The UK is trying it 👎

Red Bull NY would be the best fit as it would be close to his wife's home. The other connection with New York is that the club's Global Advisor is one Gerard Houllier, who managed Aston Villa just a few seasons back. While managing the Clarets, Houllier made Nigel Reo-Coker his captain.

The strangest part of this whole rumor is the "fact" that Jurgen Klinsmann told Nigel Reo-Coker that he would be a "natural selection" for the United States Men's National Team. Reo-Coker only played for England at the U20 and U21 levels, never making an appearance for the senior side and thus not barring him from a FIFA-approved one-time nationality switch. How Reo-Coker would qualify for the United States is a different story because he does not (to our knowledge) have American heritage and would have to wait a few years (from the point where he gets a Green Card) to qualify through the marriage to his wife.

Either way, the whole situation is massively strange. It would be an interesting move from an American perspective as NRC is 28 years old and would be considered a relatively young transplant to a league that has gained an unfair reputation of being a retirement home for footballers.

We'll keep you informed.

how'd they get "promised him a spot" from "you'd be a natural fit"? IF that was even said.

check out this Shawn Bandz "Columbus Crew" music video: http://youtu.be/ySbL1eB-EXg

dude is reppin The Crew kinda hard, LOL. curious how the FO feels about stuff like this? i'd imagine they love it on the low. my favorite part: "we ain't got no basketball team, we ain't got no football team".

speaking of which, i'm pretty sure i posted it before, but have you seen this Sporting KC video this kid made?

B Double E - "Kick It (Sportin' KC) http://youtu.be/299jcUYMT6M

is this a new trend? i won't pretend to know the demographic of the average MLS supporters section, but from what i've seen and the one game i went to, it's definitely mostly latino and white. there's a smattering of us in the crowd, but not many. i've certainly never met any other black MLS fans in person. the only dudes at work that are even remotely interested in MLS at my job are British or American white guys. obviously judging from the black players on the field it's clear that black people are into playing soccer. just curious about it from a fan perspective. what's you guys experiences like?

cuz they love soccer and the crowd is hip. actually, in the TA so it's usually cuz the crowd is hip and they love soccer, but whatevs -- they're there.

overall it is powerfully white, though ("athleticism" is the same kinda subtle code word you can find in online discussions about certain players...). I think the hip hop thing is like how you identified, though -- MLS fans are generally young, and young people generally love hip hop, it's not any more complicated than that.

but besides alla that? Darlington Nagbe crying cuz he called his mom after his game on MLS36 is as valid and beautiful as any "black" experience you can find. I mean, I'm speaking as a gringo, so I know it's not for me to say, but dude is repping the diaspora as proudly and strongly as anyone I know in the public eye. yeah, so he married a fly-ass Becky from Ohio, too, but who cares? he thanked his mom first and his dad is STILL involved in Liberian national soccer if I'm not mistaken.

if any front offices fail to see how "youth culture" is positive for MLS, they're doing it wrong.

Great news. USL Pro needed a hand and they're waay more organized than NASL
i'm hedging USL becomes our D-League/2nd-tier and NASL is absorbed into MLS in 10-20 years.

In response to Reply # 181

because this is DEFINITELY going to pay dividends on player development.

remember Bright Dike? remember him getting selected with a high pick by the Columbus Crew then getting cut? well, it was his time with the USL Timbers that earned him his place back in MLS and this offseason he was earning caps with the Nigerian national team (oh yeah and he thankfully played Kris Boyd's fat, lazy, money-stealing ass straight out of the league, too, in a half a season no less).

so yeah -- Bright Dike, the Portland Timbers, and the Nigerian national team can thank USL for giving a player like him a chance. I'm sure he wasn't the first, I'm sure he won't be the last.

imo

it didn't really seem like a progressive MLS move let alone a move that would make a good case for NY as a good team.

on paper NY looked like they should dispatch so many teams handily in the EC
they finished ok. but it always seems like they're trying to be the Cosmos when they'd probably be better served acting more like the Metrostars

he was hip hop as fuck, too, when he first got here I remember him posting pics of the marquee that had Lupe Fiasco coming into town because he was saying it was that kind of stuff that made him excited about being in America. if other teams don't holla at his agent, then I wonder about the wisdom of some parts of MLS. yeah, he wasn't the easiest player to coach ever, but they can't all be, right? he WILL BE MISSED I *loved* that guy on the team.

Designated Player: The Extraordinary Journey of Machael David
By Graham Parker on January 24, 2013 11:45 AM ET

MLS Soccer
Not for the first or last time in his life, Machael David was approaching a fork in the road. Seventeen years old, and carrying a UK passport bearing someone else’s picture, the young Nigerian found himself confronted by two lines in the JFK Airport immigration hall. Tired and hungry (he hadn’t known the food on the trans-Atlantic flight was free), and speaking only rudimentary English, the young man now faced a moment of uncertainty as to which line to join and, looking for a sign, slowed to a halt. Irritated by the sudden blockage, a family group pushed impatiently past him and headed for the shorter “U.S. Citizens” line. David smiled and followed them gratefully, thinking: “This must be where the black people go ... ”

Seven years later, I’m standing with Machael David beside a soccer field in Florida, and he’s telling me, “I’m glad that I was caught. It enabled me to go through everything that has happened since.” The route from a harsh fluorescent-lit interview room at JFK to speaking with reporters at the MLS Combine has not been a straightforward one, but then neither was the path that brought him to America in the first place. For David, it has become the norm for the lucky breaks in his life to first appear as crushing disappointments.

It’s perhaps why he’s so upbeat and positive when we talk, despite what has been a disappointing Combine for him on the field. When we first speak, he’s just come off the field after his final trial game, playing in his favored holding midfield role, after he had been positioned in an unfamiliar right-back role for his previous games. His performance has been tidy (David’s favorite player is Claude Makelele , that most reliable of cogs in flashy teams’ engine rooms), but despite his constant talking and organizing, and vividly colored boots, it possibly hasn’t been as eye-catching as it needs to be for a game played in audition mode. At every turn, David chose the neat pass, the simple interception, the teammate in space. For all his wider spiritual belief, founded in personal experience and his Christian faith, that the right opportunities in life will reveal themselves, part of me finds myself wishing that just for today he’d been more selfish in forcing the issue and grabbing the coaches’ attentions on the field.

It’s a thought that comes up again a few days later on SuperDraft day. At one point, David would have been what Travis Clark, a staff writer for youth and college soccer site Top Drawer Soccer , calls “a borderline first round talent” for the SuperDraft. But injuries in his later college years have pushed him down the rankings a little, and a young man described in his MLS scouting report as a “very good soccer player” who “reads the game very well”, has had such remarks qualified by doubts about his fitness and his mentality. After his performance at the Combine, he gets only scattered mentions in the mock drafts and blog posts that are the currency of draft week. And now, as the draft unfolds, and first Andrew Farrell, then 18 other players are selected with the first 19 picks, there’s hard confirmation that David will not be going in the first round.

Watching in Santa Barbara, Brian Escalera, a UC Santa Barbara booster and active member of the University’s Living Scholar mentorship program, is feeling uneasy as the draft progresses. Machael David, one of the athletes he mentors, is watching the draft beside him, quietly refusing any offers of food or something to drink, as a steady drip of rejection arrives every three minutes onscreen. Earlier that week, Escalera had traveled to Florida to accompany David to the Combine, where there’d been polite interest from a few teams, but not a great deal of buzz. Now Escalera was wondering how the young man might react if he were not picked in the second round.

David came into Escalera’s life during the former’s sophomore year at college and swiftly became part of what Escalera calls an extended family, that includes his wife, Jan, children, and a growing number of university athletes that he mentors and who know him as "Poppa B." Escalera doesn’t play favorites, but calls Machael "an extraordinary young man," praising his maturity, generosity, and strength. He's one of only a few people who knows David’s story well enough to know how far he's come, only to now be potentially told by MLS front offices that he will be coming no further. The draft continues — pick 23 ... pick 24 ... no Machael David.

Machael David was born in Nigeria. The early death of his father left his mother unable to care for him properly, and a young Machael ended up living a peripatetic existence between street life and an abusive uncle he feared. So when an “agent” showed up at a soccer game in his neighborhood and praised his talent, David and nine others jumped at his promise to make them professionals in Italy — signing a blank sheet of paper with their names typed on them. Having tied the boys to an exploitative contract and taken their passports, the agent ended up abandoning the the group in Milan just as the FIFA rules on foreign players tightened (a 2004 rule change affected international eligibility , which had a knock-on effect on youth policy and how players demonstrate a link to the country they're playing in), and where, as highly visible illegal immigrants, the young teenagers lived precariously, selling pirated CDs in return for lodgings in so-called “Senegalese hotels,” and dodging immigration officials.

Through all this instability, the common thread was soccer. “For every kid in poverty in my country, the only way out for them is soccer.” Stranded far from home with no prospects, soccer became the center of a limited social life for the young men. Each weekend, David and his fellow African immigrants would gather at a park near the Milano Cadorna rail station to play a pickup game and talk about grandiose future plans, which generally had a limited basis in reality. Though, as David notes, at least in this situation, definitive failure was deferred: “Getting out of Nigeria, you’d rather live in poverty in another country than go back home not making it. You’d die from the pressure of people there.” Still, at that stage in his life, the only end to this limbo looked to be eventual deportation. By the end of his time in Italy, seven of the group David had arrived with had been forcibly removed from the country.

Despite his narrowing horizons, David found a way out. As it happened, a reasonably common part of the illegal diaspora in Milan was a crude variety of speculative investor who would front prospective talents a passport and the cost of a plane ticket, in return for a share when the player made it. Hearing at one of the park soccer games about this talented young man who’d become vocally obsessed by the idea of America, one of these figures came forward during David’s third year in the city. Thus, armed with a one-way ticket, 50 Euros and that fake UK passport, 17-year-old Machael David flew into New York.

Perhaps the young man’s only advantage at that moment was the fact that he had no comprehension of how flimsy his pretext for entering the country was. His vivid array of red flags included joining the wrong nationality line at immigration, of course, but that was just for starters. There was the fake passport, the blank customs form, the lack of English, the lack of a return ticket, the lack of even a notional idea of an address for his stay in the U.S., and indeed his initial haltingly stated belief to the first officer he met, that he was “coming to live in America.” Now, any non-citizen who has flown into JFK with even legitimate paperwork knows what an intimidating snarl of a welcome it can represent. Yet as the clearly vulnerable young man broke down and wept, begging not to be sent back to Nigeria, he was actually reassured by another immigration officer that he was safe, would be treated fairly, and would now be going to a children’s group home in Queens, while his case was heard.

After three months at the home, during which time he learned English and converted to Christianity, and with his transition to adulthood (and adult detention) pending, David caught a break, as a host family in Tacoma, Washington, volunteered to take him in while a lawyer began working on his asylum case. And he kept playing soccer. Before long, David was a star starter for his new high school team and had been taken under the wing of his coach J.R. Chamber’s family. He was adapting academically and, working extra morning and evening sessions, managed to start and complete high school in two and a half years with a 3.8 GPA, before a chance encounter with a UC Santa Barbara assistant coach, Greg Wilson (who had come to see a teammate of David's play), opened up a path to college. Other recruiters had come and gone quickly — attracted by the player’s talent but alarmed by his lack of U.S. academic history and likely NCAA eligibility difficulties. But UC Santa Barbara saw something in the young player, not the least his tenacity in getting this far in his life, and proactively pursued David.

In the meantime, a successful asylum claim had gotten him his green card, but even now at college, David’s route was not smooth — his crash course to get there had indeed left him short of NCAA eligibility, and he could not play in his first year. That, plus the injuries that curtailed his appearances the previous year, left his college playing record looking sparse, though he picked up several awards, including recognition from Top Drawer Soccer as an All-American rookie first-team selection. He was on peoples’ radar — Travis Clark recalls his impression of him at the time as “very good on the ball; he played ‘big’ in midfield.” He still likes the player, though he offers that with the caveat that “the knock on him is the injuries.”

Despite the injuries — none of which were career-threatening — David was making the most of his college experience, regularly posting highly in, and even winning, the UCSB's Golden Eagle award for the athlete with the best GPA. After his own experiences, he hatched a plan to become an immigration lawyer, and became involved in community work under the guidance of Escalera and his family. David is deeply grateful for Escalera’s support, though years of looking after himself from too young an age have left him wary of anything that compromises his sense of individual self-reliance — though playing as a team member helps.

I hear these details of David’s life at a further sitdown interview at the Combine. He speaks with quick urgency, motoring through his story as if impelled to cover each detail. It’s as much testimony as it is biographical background. At each apparent setback in the narrative, he talks about destiny intervening — seeing his detention at JFK, and even his abandonment in Milan at 14, as fortuitous in what they allowed to follow. When we talk about the SuperDraft, he’s hopeful, but insists he’s not looking for money or glory as a soccer player: “I’m looking for an assignment.” I think again of Makelele.

As I listen to David’s story, I’m moved by the big details, but I'm also ambivalent about the urgency of it all — speaking to Escalera, who calls me back more than once as I’m writing the story, quietly but definitely protective of David, it’s clear he shares the young player’s idea that this is a story about much more than soccer. I tend to agree, but if it’s to have wider resonance, David needs a team.

As we get deeper into the second round of the SuperDraft, nobody's mentioning Machael David when each picking team’s name comes up. Of the players on David’s combine team, the Generation Adidas pair of Kekutah Manneh and Eriq Zavaleta had gone early in the top 10, while the midfielder Carlos Alvarez had gone second overall. As the draft proceeds, other names he’d played alongside come off the board, and teams who’d shown an interest in him conclude their business for the day.

With only 10 picks remaining, there’s still a little hope that a day marked by significant trade activity might yet bring David back into contention. There’s been a call for a timeout as Real Salt Lake trade places with Philadelphia. For a technically gifted defensive midfielder like Machael David, RSL might be an ideal team — a disciplined, well-established system for a player like that to learn in, with an ideal role model in Kyle Beckerman. They also have a coach, in Jason Kreis, who’s prepared to throw youngsters in early and who knows firsthand that all sorts of factors can push a player down the draft order. Kreis himself was drafted 43rd overall in the 5th round of the inaugural MLS draft before becoming the first player to score 100 MLS goals.

The timeout concludes, and the pick is announced ... forward Devon Sandoval. The remaining picks pass in a blur, until the Galaxy use the last pick of the day to take another of David’s teammates at the Combine, left back Greg Cochrane. And that’s that. In Santa Barbara, Escalera now steels himself to deal with a crushed David, but is surprised that the young man, while disappointed, is the first to look ahead:

“It’s OK. We’re going to get through this," he says. "This’ll be fine on Tuesday . I’ll have another opportunity. Tuesday will be our day."

“You think you’re mentoring these young men,” Escalera says. “But they’re mentoring you. … For him to be so disappointed watching the first two rounds and then turn like that — this is the resilience of this young man.”

When I call David after the draft is over, he’s equally calm: “Honestly speaking, when I look at the players who were picked, I’m really happy for them that they’re going to have a future, but I am disappointed because when I look at players who can play holding midfielder, I didn’t think there was anyone left who was a natural in that position. If this was even two years ago, I would not be speaking to you now, because of the disappointment. But I’ve grown a lot, and I’m trying not to panic. I believe in myself. For me, it doesn’t matter if I’m the first or the last pick, I just need the chance to step on the field.”

That next chance is the Supplemental Draft, a few days after the SuperDraft. David is couch-surfing at a friend's until he gets word of how that goes. “I told them, ‘I’m just waiting till Tuesday and hopefully I can leave you guys alone.’” He’s reluctant to lean further on Escalera, who’s promised to continue to support him and feels that if no team comes in for him, his story may come full circle: “I spoke to my mom by phone today, and she’s been praying and fasting for three days … and that’s what hits me the most — she depends on me … At the moment, I feel a little bit like when I was back in Africa: that I have nowhere to go.” He trails off for a moment, then seems to remember himself: “I just need a chance.”

With the 44th pick of the MLS Supplemental Draft, Machael David was drafted by the Colorado Rapids and will travel to meet up with the team at preseason camp in the hopes of earning a contract.

i don't guess his odds are good for making the team since he's a Supp Draft player?

they stocked the team full of Italians, including Allesandro Nesta and Marco Di Vaio, and by most accounts they're responsible for killing Jesse Marsch as coach because they (and now this is my personal interpretation...) didn't like him because he's American. Nesta also ran the GK Donovan Ricketts out of town -- Ricketts showed up in Portland saying what a major relief it was to be out of Montreal -- on what I'm pretty comfortable saying might be some of that under-the-radar Italian racism kinda bubbling through (scuttlebutt is Nesta began refusing to ever backpass to Ricketts (cuz his feet are sloppy, but still...) and he took over set piece organization from Ricketts cuz Nesta didn't trust him on that either).

so anyway -- I'd be kinda *dying* to know what your boy's experience is with interacting with that team. from afar it seems they're being run by proxy by an Italy-based agent (they have three different former Serie A players as DPs on the squad and Marsch was canned to get a coach with European pedigree, too, most reports saying at the Italians' behest...)

but once you're in camp, you're in camp. if you catch the eye of scouts in preseason games there's a chance another team will give you a call even if you get cut. and now there's the USL Pro league working with MLS, so if it doesn't work for him at MLS he could probably land on a USL roster and it's been proven on a number of different occasions now if you hustle in USL it can result in landing a roster spot in MLS, the new relationship between the two leagues should only increase that opportunity for the lower level players.

so yeah -- huge opportunity for your boy even if it isn't a guaranteed paycheck from the league at this point.

doesn't fit the team profile to be targeting a 35-year-old player, but then again does fit an obvious need at the always problematic LB position and I think the team might be eager to add a bit more veteran presence to a team that's been a bit *too* young the past two years. hasn't played since the summer, though? that didn't work out great with Kris Boyd...

In response to Reply # 0

interesting

http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2013/01/25/dc-united-sign-indonesian-attacking-midfielder-alam-loan

D.C. United co-owner Erick Thohir hails from Indonesia and vowed to bring in a fellow countryman to play for D.C. United at his introductory press conference last July.

On Friday he delivered on his word.

The club announced the loan acquisition of Indonesian attacking midfielder Syamsir Alam from Belgian side C.S. Visé. Alam has been a fixture for Indonesian international sides beginning at the Under-11 level.

"Definitely. For sure," Thohir told reporters in July 2012 when asked about the potential of bringing in players from his native country. "But I don’t want to bring just any players. If they’re not good enough, don’t bother D.C. United. If they’re good enough, let them come."

The 20-year-old Alam has been good enough to earn spells with Uruguayan giants Peñarol and Dutch Eredivisie sides SC Heerenveen and Vitesse Arnhem.

“Syamsir is a young, attacking midfielder with good technical ability, and we look forward to having him on loan with us,” D.C. United GM Dave Kasper said in a club statement.

Alam is not the first Indonesian that has been linked with D.C. United. Indonesian Under-21 forward Andik Vermansyah had a training stint with the club in September 2012.

and the joke is that you can find SE Asian players for cheap who look like great prospects but they never amount to much besides "promise" in the end.

a 20-year-old with European experience isn't bad at all, though. those looks aren't clearly a cut above (they're possibly below), but then again it's hardly "red flag" material and if Andy Najar can come out of the DC United academy there's no reason a player like this can't succeed.

so maybe the agents and players have a comfort level with corruption in their business dealings that MLS shies away from, I dunno.

but yeah, so far only Vancouver seems to have shown any interest in courting Asian talent and it seems to have done well for them. I thought Long Tan was a worthwhile player and YP Lee was a big part of them being an improved team last season.

plus the whole "culture shock" element of moving from Asia to North America is just about as severe as it gets. I'd bet there's more than a few GMs who are leery of having a guy who isn't adaptable crumble even if the scouts tell them they have the talent to make it.

but yeah, overall -- you'd think there'd be more partnership than there is between the soccer cultures in Asia + North America.

this Chivas narrative is way to interesting to pan. i hope Celtic can't land Agudelo. i feel like he can be better served with Chelis right now skill wise, imo. and it looks like Alvarez is the only draft pick thats gonna see real minutes early on.

My Dynamo are committing to this 4-4-2 and are amassing an army. i feel WAAAY better coming into this season than last season. Ashe and Cummings just came out of knee surgery so idk if we're gonna have a Grizzlies type start out of the gate, but i feel like this regular season will be better than the rough one last year. We really should have won the chip last season but Carr went down which sucks because Carr is still out and he's easily the most explosive attacker we had compared to Bruin.

got kind of old always saying, "if only they played like that all the time" when they had a good game only to see a loss to a lesser club the next game. not really sure what to expect out of Mike Petke or the fact that once again we've slashed a ton of players from the roster.

as usual silverware of any kind would be nice. if for nothing else, i'd like to see my club qualify for the Champions League.

Petke looks like the first positive move in what will hopefully be a series of great moves.
i hope they come out and have a good start just so Petke stays as the head. These teams need homers to run these clubs, imo. NY needs a good dose of civic pride rather than confused foreigners.

In response to Reply # 208

that's my #1 interest in MLS this year (and I have tickets to every home game, very excited...)

honestly? I don't know if MLS currently has the technical quality in its players to be able to play "possession-oriented attacking soccer" as it's being played in the top leagues. I don't know if the average MLS roster has enough talent to be able to make the 4-3-3 work, which is why I think it's a tactic that has had little success in the league.

but of course I also believe the league is improving every year and obviously it will only move forward when its athletes + coaches *push* it forward, so I'm very, very excited to watch the Porter Experiment in Portland to see how it pans out. I'm not even talking shit to my Seattle friends even though I've loved everything that's happened this offseason because I still think there's just as much chance of Porter being a failure as there is of him being a success at this point so yeah my main fascination with the league this year will be watching the story play out in Portland.

aside from that I want those fucking Italians in Montreal to lose.
I will watch Sherjill McDonald eagerly in Chicago because he's just a great individual forward.
NYRB is and will remain boring to me. sure Henry is nice but besides that BOOOOOOOOOOORING.
my Seattle friend swears that Christian Tiffert is a difference maker but I have yet to see it so I'm very curious to see how he fares in 2013.
Chivas will be weird as Chivas always is.
will Wondo seriously score 15+ again? will other teams ever learn that he is ghosting in their box so they should MARK THE FUCK UP?
Galaxy will be boring. yeah, Robbie Keane is amazing and is going to torch the league again <--- boring.
Philly will be interesting with Le Toux back in the fold, I want him to succeed there again.
Columbus will be interesting with a full Higauin season in store for us.

so yeah -- tons of stuff I'm looking forward to, already starting to count the days to opening weekend...

this is the year i think we'll start to see the Euro mercenary tactic start to wane and coaches pushing more positive agendas on youth development

Chicago Fire *
i expect similar to last season. not really much to get excited about

Chivas USA ****
i really think Chivas is gonna have a good run. they'll probably flop initially trying to figure it out, but they're gonna start an upswing. i have no idea how this Agudelo thing is gonna pan out, but it would be such a waste not to fit him in cause he's probably not going to Celtic. Either way, this is gonna be really fantastic or Legendarily bad.

Colorado Rapids
...

Columbus Crew**
i expect continued improvement

FC Dallas*
it's gonna be a long while before this team heats up at all. Brek doesn't seem like he's gonna get moved this month either

D.C. United***
Ben Olsen

Houston Dynamo****
We re-upped and made some plays for some good players to fill some spots and got rid of Mac Kanji. Bruin is showing and this is probably our last season to have Brad Davis in his prime.

Los Angeles Galaxy*
Boredom galore

Montreal Impact*
Last year they exceeded expectations but this offseason displayed a level of misunderstanding worthy of an expansion team.

New England Revolution**
They'll probably be less bad this year

New York Red Bulls**
i expect a little more positivity and probably post-season disappointment at the hands of Houston

Philadelphia Union***
i expect them to make a serious play deep into the post

Portland Timbers*****
Caleb Porter has the potential to revolutionize the way coaches bring along young talent.

Real Salt Lake**
Meh

San Jose Earthquakes****
i mean, whatever i predict is gonna be wrong.

Seattle Sounders**
Meh

Sporting Kansas City***
expect them to keep that train smoking.

Toronto FC***
MOAR CANADIANS

Vancouver Whitecaps FC**
Meh

although I was a bit surprised to see in the Kickoff this morning that Roger Espinoza just assisted on two goals for Wigan recently, he never struck me with his attacking presence. I know, I know -- it's really just fallout of the rigid pressure system in SKC, but still surprising to me.

Kamara is kinda useless except for his forehead (and runs into the box, I suppose) so I'm kinda surprised Norwich sees utility for him. are they just thumping longballs there? I don't see Kei clicking unless he's on a "get it wide, get it into the box" team in the EPL.

essentially they thought they had a deal but then the numbers changed forcing them to have to sign him as a DP. They didn't feel as though it would be worthwhile to sign a developing player as a DP.

i actually don't hate that. still really annoying that he would be getting DP money at his age.

In response to Reply # 224

and the blitz of dad/agent media leading up to Merritt dropping on twitter that the rumored deal fell through fit that too neatly.

but seriously, you know what I was thinking about the other day? you remember when PTFC lost to Cal FC in that embarrassing Open Cup loss? Kris Boyd *had* a PK in that game somewhere in the late 70s /early 80th minute and he SKIED that shit over the frame, didn't even work the keeper. and losing that match meant PTFC lost the chance to host Seattle in the next round which I heard was like a $500k revenue loss on that one game alone. so that fool Kris Boyd didn't just steal the $1.5M but he *also* stole another $500k in good revenue and yeah I bet you Paulson thinks Boyd was a $2M mistake so he will not be so free with his spending again.

and when a player on a DP slot is producing just as much (or less) than a young, hungry guy (like Bright Dike) making less than $100k, that's a problem for both players (and potentially the whole locker room), not just for management.

so yeah -- too bad it didn't work out, but if Mixx wanted to be in Portland he'd be in Portland and I'm comfortable with my team taking the pass there.

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is also chairman of the 207-member European Club Association.

"Everywhere, be it Germany, France or England, summer is the best period of the year. And that is the season we don't play," Rummenigge said in Tuesday's edition. "In deepest winter, when it is very cold and snowing, we play nearly all the time in conditions that are disagreeable for both players and spectators. It is not logical."

I get it, Maicon Santos never worked out as planned and your pockets are presumably flush with cash from selling Brek, but why get two totally redundant forwards of roughly equivalent quality?

I guess Cooper's best years were in Dallas some maybe they think the Texas heat will work like some kind of potion, but goal totals aside, he did in NYC exactly what he did in Portland -- neat feat + winger-esque movement around the box despite his size.

we'll see...

and Diego Valeri has the potential to be the Javi Mo of yore, the one that took an upstart RSL to the final moments of CCL. everything I've seen Valeri do is clean, everything I've seen Valeri do is very intelligent -- sometimes he goes short, sometimes he goes for thru balls or big switches, sometimes he dribbles for space, AND he can pull the trigger on a shot. he's exactly the type of player that I think is in short supply in MLS, so that's very exciting for the prospects of our 4-3-3.

Nagbe is also being put exlusively into those spots where his skill shines, not being round-pegged into square-holes like Spencer too often did.

and either Porter understands, or it's just Chara being Chara, but the thing is Chara *does* play a simple passing game, so Porter is putting him into the fulcrum / box-to-box role where he's just asked to win the ball, lay it off, or else pick it up off the D, then pass to either a winger or Valeri who can play a range of passing like I was saying.

but yeah -- even early on they are definitely *building* out of the back. the D works the ball for a second, then the midfielders -- either Will Johnson or Chara or Alhassan when he's used centrally -- come and collect off the D. then passes start stringing between the wingers and the mids while the FBs make overlapping runs. there are extremely few chances in the opposition box that are created from passes originating around the center line.

we'll see how it plays at full speed when the preseason is over (because so many MLS teams feast on ball-winning to speedy counter-attack, which might prove a problem we'll see) but right now this is a very, very interesting MLS side that I'm excited to see in person soon.

First Thursday is the downtown art gallery thing where they all open up and show.

so in 'response' to the 'corporate, soulless' nature of First Thursday, Alberta Street created Last Thursday, basically a gutter-punk street art / open air market extravaganza that eventually got the neighbors so pissed off with kids pissing in their front lawn and littering all over the place (oh and of course it all wasn't funded, 'donation only' by the local businesses that wanted to support it) that it became a bit of a local issue as the Mayor had to step in and strong arm a governing body into place (the gutterpunks were resisting HARD b/c the organization would kill the 'soul' of Last Thursday or whatever)

but basically every bad stereotype in Portlandia? you can find each and every one at Last Thursday.

so lol @ Timbers pandering to the worst of the TA gutter punk loudmouths by debuting the kits there. their marketing arm stays savvy as fuck about local Portland character...

neat feat, poor work rate, very inconsistent, wet noodle in the tackle.

I'm sure the TA twitter-verse is going to be hanging effigies of Gavin Wilkinson shortly, though, since they loved to idiotically trumpet the fact that Alexander led the team in assists while not getting much PT last year. he got exactly the amount of PT he earned, in my opinion.

if it WEREN'T for what I see as increased depth in center-mid (I mean Will Johnson > Eric Alexander DUH) I might have a different opinion, but Valeri + Johnson made Alexander very expendable.

The Next Chapter…

Things are never what they seem… My whole life I have felt different, different from my peers, even different from my family. In today’s society being different makes you brave. To overcome your fears you must be strong and have faith in your purpose.

For the past 25 year I have been afraid, afraid to show whom I really was because of fear. Fear that judgment and rejection would hold me back from my dreams and aspirations. Fear that my loved ones would be farthest from me if they knew my secret. Fear that my secret would get in the way of my dreams.

Dreams of going to a World Cup, dreams of The Olympics, dreams of making my family proud. What would life be without these dreams? Could I live a life without them?

Life is only complete when your loved ones know you. When they know your true feelings, when they know who and how you love. Life is simple when your secret is gone. Gone is the pain that lurks in the stomach at work, the pain from avoiding questions, and at last the pain from hiding such a deep secret.

Secrets can cause so much internal damage. People love to preach about honesty, how honesty is so plain and simple. Try explaining to your loved ones after 25 years you are gay. Try convincing yourself that your creator has the most wonderful purpose for you even though you were taught differently.

I always thought I could hide this secret. Football was my escape, my purpose, my identity. Football hid my secret, gave me more joy than I could have ever imagined… I will always be thankful for my career. I will remember Beijing, The MLS Cup, and most of all my teammates. I will never forget the friends I have made a long the way and the friends that supported me once they knew my secret.

Now is my time to step away. It’s time to discover myself away from football. It’s 1 A.M. in London as I write this and I could not be happier with my decision. Life is so full of amazing things. I realized I could only truly enjoy my life once I was honest. Honesty is a bitch but makes life so simple and clear. My secret is gone, I am a free man, I can move on and live my life as my creator intended.

come to Portland, Robbie! the TA will aggressively fight for your acceptance come hell or high water! they would kill to have a pet outsider to push the envelope with on the roster!

but seriously -- good look for him, bad look for pro sports that he feels the need to retire along with being honest.

that HAIR! how the hell do you play in the Houston heat with hair like that??

let's hope this isn't another Beckerman situation where the style holds him back. he needs to get traded to somewhere like New England where it's a bit safer to rock a style like that (although something tells me lame-ass K-schooled Heaps wouldn't be having it anyway, you know alt-rocker-at-heart Dom Kinnear is the right man to nurture a kid's creative soul like that lol)

but seriously -- hope the kid does well, that's EXACTLY the sort of talent we're hoping MLS Academies nurture.

3 goals from open play, VERY interesting and dynamic play throughout the team. guys I've known for two years have the potential to become entirely new guys this year.

and look, I'mma just admit that I dislike EVERYTHING about Will Johnson's steez -- Canadian, lame-o military cut, perma-scowl face, thanks god + family more than I personally care for -- but something tells me I'm going to have to learn to love him, because he figures to be VERY central to the team's success this year, just as much as my man Diego Chara. I'm working on liking him. working on it.

Even though it's only pre-season, the effort and workrate was there. A lot of entertaining, one-touch play (thanks for widening that field). Diego Valeri is nice, I'm anticipating how this squad'll look midseason after some time to gel.

Speaking of guys having the potential to become new guys, I was impressed with Kalif Alhassan workrate. Dude was all over the field.

All hail Coach Porter, I might fuck around and end up pick up League Pass this year. They're down here vs. Earthquakes in April. Trying to round up my homies to make the trip lol.

Shalrie's going to be a disaster for Seattle. I couldn't be more thrilled he ended up there. I wonder if they got to restructure his contract, too, cuz he SURE AS SHIT is not a DP. he wasn't when he got the DP contract from NE, he definitely isn't now.

and he's notorious for being a poor locker room presence (I think just two years ago getting sent home early from the NE Revs Orlando preseason tourney due to some undisclosed late night hotel shenanigans with one of their young players going home with him, too?)

he's just NOT the player he used to be now that he's lost half a step. he's always dominated with athleticism, so as the athleticism fades, he stops being a DP. Sigi is making this signing off scouting reports five years old.

so yeah -- I look forward to the other players resenting that he's a DP, I look forward to him underperforming on the field, and I look forward to him struggling to gain fitness and being a brat about it all the whole time, too.

although I'm starting to LOVE the influx of foreign talent that isn't getting the DP $. sure, the European economic crisis might not be one to help me sleep at night for the most part, but the part where middling talent turns to MLS for a regular, modest paycheck works out great in my book. added pro experience in the league should only help.
