flashed that across the screen last night....and when you look at some of the players he's ahead of on that list it does put his career in perspective (Mo Cheeks/Nate Archibald/Bob Cousy/Dennis Johnson/Kevin Johnson)

you're right, Miller has had a very solid career. I think it gets overlooked because he's been a journeyman and never amongst the elite players and/or the star player per se on any squad he's been on.

Look back at his career, and it's hard to really capture him.

He started on those horrible pre-Bron Cavs teams, spent a forgettable season with the Clips, then moved to Denver where he put up some good numbers on teams that kind of struggled to get attention (outside of Melo,) then Philly (where Sixer fans resented him because he's what they got in the AI trade,) and then on those disappointing Portland teams (when they were just removed from being Everyone's Favorite Up and Coming Team and settled on being a one and done team.)

But dude's been pretty consistent his whole career.

And didn't get any attention, at all.

I don't disagree with your overall point, though.

Its just that its not only about him piling up numbers over
a long stretch.

Its also about him simply being underrated. Even in the years
when he should have gotten more attention.

The Blazers spiraled downhill last year after trading him for Raymond Felton. It's impossible to quantify his skills and what he brings to a team, statistically.

I think that George Karl's assessment of him as a Top-15 point guard (or whatever he said) is not that far off.

Dude is an all-star caliber player every year, whether the stats say it or not.

nah, much like most people (outside maybe celery I suppose who's a Blazer fan) Andre Miller doesn't move my meter much either way.

I just thought dude above me threw 'great, great' around a little too recklessly.

I consider Sam Cassell a better player than Andre Miller career-wise & I still wouldn't call him 'great, great'.

He's definitely better than Andre Miller is a good guard who could sometimes be very good.

'Great, Great' to me is Chris Paul territory. Multiple All-Star appearance, best player on a quality team at some point, potential Hall of Fame types.

the reason he has a bad reputation is because the people who watch him night in, night out, know there are two Andre Miller's -- the motivated Andre Miller who's a dominant basketball player, and the unmotivated, cashing a check Andre Miller who does just enough to not get fired.

problem is over the long haul of a season you see the unmotivated one much more frequently than the motivated one.

I really do want to believe you.

He's really a fabulous basketball player, though.

He might be inconsistent, but so?

Hating Andre Miller is like hating Vince Carter in some ways,
but worse.

Vince Carter hate is always about what he could have been or
should have been, which is dumb because Carter still had a
fabulous...super fabulous in fact...pro career. Hating on
Miller is dumb because nobody expected anything. He's
done nothing but overachieve his entire career and refuses
to not be relevant. Its commendable.

after a while I came to find his totally self-selected moments of effort pretty amusing. it became like a game trying to predict those games when he would decide to actually try (and when he tries, he really is an amazingly smart player that's really fun to watch).

the quintessential Andre Miller moment for me in Portland was when he had his iron man streak broken due to a suspension. there was a really, really chippy game against the Clippers where Andre spent a quarter crying to the refs every time Blake Griffin got near him for a rebound cuz he was getting bodied like hell (and he'd made some comments beforehand about how people don't respect the vets enough or something which was pretty thinly veiled shade at Blake, who you could totally tell Andre resented for being famous just for dunking and not much else) so eventually Andre just TEES OFF on Blake under the basket. a ball was coming off for a rebound and Andre covers the most ground the fastest he's EVER done in a Blazers jersey to just nail Blake in the back as Blake is eyeing a rebound, and of course with the veteran guile he got away with it, didn't even get a foul in the game.

but the NBA reviews it after the game, calls it a flagrant (it was so obvious -- possibly the fastest Andre has run in his life to nail this guy he's been whining about for the past 10 minutes), and suspends Andre, which breaks his iron man streak (highest in the league at that time).

so you know what I immediately thought? gotta make sure I watch the next Portland v. Clippers game cuz we're gonna see mad, motivated Andre. sure enough, next time they play Andre does his Rondo 0.9 impression, gets like 24 and 12 and like 7 rebounds, just DOMINATES the game, without even jumping or getting past a jog, it always seems unbelievable every time you see it, sends people like you running to the internet to talk about how underrated he is, then of course Andre promptly proceeds to take the next 2-3 weeks of the schedule off.

so yeah, I came to appreciate that little show he puts on. but if you're rooting for your team to win a high playoff seed or get past the 1st round, that's the moment where you're suddenly less than amused with Andre Miller as your starting PG.

buzzer beater and all, come on, this guy's career is respectable but forgettable.

you're talking about him with HOF'ers and borderline HOF'ers, the guy is a first ballot FOH'er, will get 0% of the vote.

like i said, he's a fun player, has lasted a long time. he is the antithesis of "all out" though and he didn't find even certain things to do consistently like sheed or horry or other guys who clearly phoned in portions of their careers.

celery pretty much nailed it above. it's about sample size.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Motherfucka, if we gonna talk about SAMPLE SIZE, IVERSON'S
SAMPLE THE LAST FIVE YEARS BEEN GETTING CUT and
FIRED from TURKISH AND CHINESE league basketball

bwhaahahahahaha

What about Iverson's "sample size" where the Nuggets
got better the SECOND HE LEFT THE FUCKING TEAM,
went to the WC Finals, losing to the eventual champion
Lakers in 6?

He's a fucking LOSER

All while ANDRE MILLER is essentially the SAME AGE and STILL
CONTRIBUTING to ELITE PLAYOFF TEAMS....RIGHT TODAY
Andre Miller got the ball in CRUNCH TIME for a top 3 seed

Iverson is author of the WORST FALLOFF IN THE HISTORY of
basketball and has the most one-dimensional, non-adaptable skill
set of any player in league history. This is why Andre Miller still getting
NBA CHECKS while Iverson is busy being a terrible Homo sapien

Take your L, dunny

She taught him in High School and helped him a grip...his test scores were low, and she had to write a letter saying that he had some challenges but was a very hard worker who was focused, and that he was a listener, never talked back or gave up, etc etc etc. The coach definitely had good words for him as well, so they accepted him.

Looking at him now, I can see that same work ethic being the reason he's been around for so damn long. Not the most gifted, but has always been focused and works hard, with a good attitude (until you Blake Griffin him and bring out that CPT).

I always compare him to a player we had at her same school named Marlon Parmer...Marlon was class of 99 and had a LOT more skill than Andre did when he was there, and was clearly better...was even smarter in class. But had too many attitude issues, never got along with folks...so he scraped a few pre-season rosters at best.

his true PG style of play and wanted him. I'm not sure what the deal was with the test scores, like if they were too low to meet requirements, or just lower then average and needed a letter stating that he was still capable.

is more about what he symbolized than what he was.

he was the only thing we got got back in the AI deal and was a big reason why we were able to stay mediocre as opposed to tanking and getting big pics.

there are little annoying things about his game but overall he is a fun player. he was very exciting with the utes.

miller could play until he was 90 and his career wouldnt be better than iverson's but that is not the issue.

it didn't matter who got traded and who came back, the names dont matter. you're talking about trading a star and going into rebuilding mode. only instead of rebuilding, they got an above average veteran for a short term as part of a broader push to remain mediocre. not only did this fail miserably from a personnel standpoint, it failed from a financial standpoint, too. snider thought people would show up for simply a "playoff team," the way they do for his other franchise. that is not a reality in Philadelphia or the NBA in general, no one cares that you're "in the picture" if you have no chance at winning.

so, yes, through no fault of his own, miller became the very real symbol of the team's waywardness. if it were another sport, he'd have been a fan favorite probably, but this is the NBA where you need top picks and big stars with very, very few exceptions.

you asked, i answered, so fuck you.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.
