"So an Asian, a Turk, n Black guy w/a beard are in a caddy...'13 ROC Post"

This is either gonna make a great story, or as most of you seem to believe, a great joke.

No expectations from most of sports media. Prior to the Hraden trade we were at the bottom 5 of most power rankings. I've seen estimates for wins as low as 21. Vegas has us at 30.5 which is only aboive the bottom two teams by 1 game. If I were still betting, I'd take this.

Make no mistake, Rockets are a long way from being a elite or even good team, but they are gonna battle for that 8th seed (for better or worse) just on the strength of playing hard and out hustling teams like the 99 Magic.

Unfortunately Doc isnt the coach, McHale is. The Rockets were one of the top scoring teams in the preseason, but the offense wasn't really free flowing. Lots of dribble handoffs and other nonsense that keeps the ball out of the guards hands. The one positive is that this team can and will run to push tempo.

Roster wise

PG: Lin-Douglas-Machado (prolly dleague) I really wished we wouldve kept Shaun Livingston. He looked great in preseason and is a great veteran presence on both ends. Unfortunately he was cut because his contract was not guaranteed. I think Rockets also figured they could keep Douglas around as a SG cause Harden can play 1 with the second unit.

SG: Harden-Delfino-Cook: Our most experienced position packs a nice 1-2 punch. Delfino can shoot the 3 at near 40%, and is versatil offensively. We'll see if Cook can be a Novak type sharpshooter off the bench.

SF: Parsons-Delfino-White: Love Parsons' all-around game. He worked hard on his outside shot and can defend 2-3 positions. We'll see if Royce White can get on the court.

PF: T-Jones, PPAT- Marc Morris- White: Land of the 6'7 PFs. PPat has expressed all offseason he wants to start but is out tonight with a thigh bruise. Tjones is starting game 1 and may never look back.
I really hope we can get something out of Marcus Morris. He was always a bit more skilled tahn jis brother but hasn't fit into our system, looked good one preseason game, then got hurt. Whatever we get out of Royce this year is a bonus

C: Asik-Greg Smith- Aldrich-D-Mo: I wasn't sold on Asik based off the limited play I saw last season but he's good, worth the contract, and our most important player. If he gets hurt we will be in major trouble defensively unless Aldrich provides something. Greg Smith is decent on offense but a terrible rebounder and defender. I hope Aldrich can take the backup job and provide some tough minutes. D-mo--hes a sg/sf in a 7 foot body. Hopefully we can get something out of him, but I think he's a year or two away. He may end up being Morey trade fodder.

All in all should be a fun season. Looking forward to it starting tonight.

though I thought Harden would help a bit. We do need some bench help in the backcourt.

MVPau was coveted by the rox before, and always seems to be the one rumored on the way out whenever the lakers struggle. and milsap is an impending FAgent who has the kind of stats that morey generally appreciates (although he's no superstar in waiting like harden).

the t-wolves will probably match or extend pekovic, but he's a PRIME candidate for a poison-pill contract from houston. him and asik would be a terror on the offensive boards, and he can actually score.

They're more inclined to deal Favors...Milsap and Al Jeff are a POTENT frontcourt, and Utah isn't letting him go for anything the Rockets have

The Rockets MIGHT battle for the 8th seed, but Utah/Denver/Portland will be extremely tough to jump

if i'm utah, either milsap or jefferson definitely gets dealt. they're both impending FAgents and favors and kanter are waiting in the wings as good, young and cheap frontcourt replacements. hanging onto milsap would be nice, but they'd have to be relatively sure he'll return to risk it.

Kanter/Favors I don't think can be as good as AlJeff/Milsap
They'll keep Kanter and match Milsap and Jefferson...which leaves Favors as the odd man out. His development has been pretty slow. Utah will probably be more inclined to keep them because the rest of the roster isn't pricey and Corbin likes his bigs

If Utah gives anyone up it'll be Favors (I believe)...plus Houston might have blown its load to get Harden. Morey would have to get very creative

Favors might help them at PF though

Lots of teams like the upside that Terrence Jones, D-Mo, and Royce White have--especially as cheap rookie contracts.

This is the second time morey has been able to use a rookie who had a nice summer league as a key piece to a trade.

Shoutout to Donte Green's 50 pt summer league

He should be playing our rookies more--namely Terrence jones.

I'm not gonna get caught flip flopping here. There will be downs this season and its gonna go back to Kevin --even I we keep winning I see him more vinny/Scott brooks.

He's really a weird hire for Morey to me..wonder what went into that hire after adelman.

what the fk was that mchale?

CALL a damn play!

i mean...

never mind. its 1 game. they are young.

i say again. .500 would be a successful season IMO

contending for a 8 seed is...honestly might be counter productive

theres just too many holes

im not sold on lin as a PG
fine w/ harden as a SG then what kinda depth we got after him? none.
asik is a good post defender but a black hole on O.
im not gonna bother w/ PF/SF

bottom line, we're not gonna get that big 3 combo teams seem to be going towards

we gotta punish teams w/ DEPTH. up tempo, scoring in bunches.

we cant just clear out & expect the beard to save our ass all season. shit aint gonna work & god help us if dude goes down for ANY length of time

etc etc

do or die

20. "Game 3 vs Por: Argh McHale"
In response to Reply # 0

Finally got to watch the DVR. Had to go out to a dinner where I thought it would just be my family and our good friend so I had NBA broadband loaded on my phone and my ipad. Get to the party and there's like 4 other people there---so I cant just by my usual hermit self and watch the game.

Was frustrated with McHale today. He's still refusing to play the rookies--even though we looked tired as hell. AT the very least get Terrence Jones in the game. Give him a chance on Lamarcus, since nobody else could stop him. Hell he coulda switched Asik onto Lamarcus and had our PF guard Hickson because (well Hickson is a PF anyways). We should've won this game at home. At the end Mchale shoulda called a timeout for the final play.

We simply can't continue to blow 8-10 point leads so quickly. Thats 3 games in a row we've lost 8 point leads. Some of it is lack of bench, some of it is just mistakes.

Disappointed with Lin's play tonight. He made a couple plays that showed flashes of last years run, but I felt like in the 3rd qtr he should have taken the ball a little more to the hole when he saw Harden was tired. One of teh dangers of having such a potent scorer is guys get stagnant and just stand around spotting up. McHale has to get guys to move and not just watch. Jeremy walking down cour, handing off to Harden, and floating around the 3 point line isnt helping anyone--cause he's not a great 3 point shooter. He's gotta go Wessy sometimes and be aggressive. Thats when he's best.

Additionally, that alley-oop play? cmon--that was just dumb. Dont know if it was a called play or what, but even if that pass gets through, im not sure Chandler Parsons finishes. It was low percentage on two fronts. In OT there was one play in particular where he went to help and lost Lillard who snuck underneath for a layup.

This is where Jeremy needs the most improvement on defense. He is fine on the ball as he showed most of the game vs Lillard, but man he's terrible off the ball. Whenhe goes to help he has no sense of who and where his man is. If thats the case just stay at home.

Harden. Dude was still getting to the hole and getting layups. Have to chalk it up to him being tired. Thing is theres gonna be lots of tired nights over an 82 game season. Sure he still scored 24...in some ways thats a positive sign--cause this is when he is at his worst. He will get enough shots on the Rockets to avg 25ppg. Obviously shooting 8-24 will hurt us--but he can score.

Asik. WTF. make a layup. Start dunking. Dude was dunking in preseason. Now he cant get off teh ground to finish.

Chandler parsons has got to be more efficient. He's on the court a lot and sometimes just disappears and makes a lot of small mistakes. We need him to be a glue guy.

Toney Douglas played good D, but is so inept on offense. WTF. Dude was a scorer at Fla st. He really just lost all confidence.

that cant happen. You have to close out better in that situation. Let them take the 1-on-1 tough 2 pointer. You still have the fuckin lead.

would be a successful season

the critique isnt new.

theres no inside presence. we are going to consistently get abused inside.

lin is who he is. not worth the money but thats water under the bridge @ this point

mchales rotations & clock mgmt are atrocious & i simply do NOT understand his beef w/ the rookies. how this clown manages to stay employed is beyond me.

other then that....we're @ LEAST a year away from contention.

Dont know what the fuck happened but we looked like the team playing a back to back.
Just sloppy from the start. Seemed like guys were expecting fouls to get called and when the calls didnt go their way--they just gave up--and played with no energy.

Missed shots, turnovers, not getting back on D.

Jeremy Lin- his worst offensive game of the season. He's just way too tentative on offense. 2-9 from the field and 4 of misses are 3 pointers. Not gonna get it done. If he's not attacking, he's also not getting the ball to teamates in scoring position. Defensively Ty was working on his ankles all night. He made a couple big defensive plays down the stretch but if he's not going to be involved offensively, they need him to contribute more consistently on defense rather than just making the "big play". His 6 steals were good, he's a beast in the passing lane and tracking down loose balls--but he's really gotta pick up the offense and it starts with him getting to the hoop. This was one of those 2003 AK-47 4x4, 5x5 statlines. Unfortunately thats not the kind of line the Rockets need from him to win ball games.

Harden- Had a rough game today. Iggy did a great job of harrassing him. Harden tried his low seep through layup like 4 times early and got it knocked away. I personally thought at least 2 of those were fouls, but hey, sometimes you dont get calls. Harden lost some aggressiveness once he didnt get the calls and forced some bad shots. The jumper wasnt falling today. The Nuggets did a great job of sending different help looks to him.

PPAT- kept us in the game with a great 3rd qtr. Was hitting 3's, midrange and stuff down low. He's gotta get more than two rebounds though/

Asik - he has this incredible knack for at least getting a hand on every rebound that comes off near the rim. He secures a bunch of them too. Today he actually did a decent job scoring and dunked the ball twice. We need that from him going forward.

Parsons et all- did a good job of playing hard, but just too sloppy. Too many turnovers, too many mistakes

Kenneth Faried- dude fuckin singlehandedly closed out the Rockets today. What a monster on offense, defense, and the glass. He was everywhere. His offense isnt great by any stretch, but he actually has the ability to put the ball on the floor and create for himself. He also creates a bunch of opportunities for himself but getting loose balls and running the floor. Most big guys arent quick or strong enough to stay with him. Reminds me of a bigger young Artest. Wouldve liked to see Terrence Jones try and compete with him.

Tough game at Memphis on Friday.

Btw fuck the Toyota Center. That place takes til halftime to get filled to 75% capacity. Houston traffic must suck.

keep forgetting to post these here.

I think ive only missed writing these for 1 game so far.

Its been a long time---going back to the Hakeem era where this team can close out games. They can be leading by 20 and you know the lead is never safe.

They played a nice first half and the ball was moving well, second half came and it started to stick a lot more. Harden had a hell of a game, but as we've seen this season, he needs to have great games for the Rockets to win if theyre just gonna run isos for him.

Even Guiness can see that the system the Rockets are playing puts Harden into situations that arent using his strengths efficiently. They're basically turning him into the inefficient swingmen he hates so. Today I even saw Harden take a couple of fallaway mid range shots while defended, ugh.

The one thing I love that were doing is rebounding and tough defense. Cant say enough about Asik's defensive presence despite his offensive shortcomings.

Good to see Toney Douglas hitting a few open looks today.
Chandler Parsons seems to be picking up confidence in that shot, and Patterson or Morris are usually on. WIth that Id still love to see Terrence Morris. Maybe we'll see it next game vs Lamarcus Aldridge with Greg Smith looking hurt again (pinky).

Jeremy Lin's has no confidence in his jumper right now. He's gotta keep shooting. Ive read he's shooting after games and before games. Eventually theyll start falling more consistently. One thing that Ive enjoyed about his game this season is seeing him do a bit of everything. He's finding guys in the open court, rebounding, playing defense, and taking care of the basketball. When he's on the court he's finding ways to help the team even though his shot isnt falling.

No plan last night. Were you guys gonna help on pau, sag in on dwight , double team Kobe? Every possession it was something different. I mean as poorly as the Lakers played defensively, we allowed them to shoot 67% in the first half. I mean some of that was just tough shot making, but a lot of it was wide open look on poor or slow rotations because we had no consistent plan on what we were going to do.

I mean the offense was decent--but this was by far our worst defensive performance this season. This was the only time Asik looked outmatched (doesnt help when you catch an elbow that splits your wig on a clear over the back and nothing gets called), but man Asik is gonna be a player when its all said and done.

Like I was saying in my other ost Jeremy Lin can't hit the broadside of a barn right now but he's gotta keep attacking. The last two games he's moved fromjust playing Ray Allen in the corner and has been attacking the basket, thats led to some good opportunities for his teammates.

Chandler Parsons has been on fire lately. If he can keep up this shooting when he gets open looks, were gonna be dangerous all season.

Terrence Jones needs to keep playing. Its clear he has the talent, athleticism, motor, and size to compete. He needs to be on the court. Hell I woulda been fine with him trying to play Dwight last night (and getting minutes at C going fwd) rather than slow ass Cole Aldrich.

Marcus Morris and PPAT. Really proud of these guys and where theyve come from the beginning of the year. After Morris' first game where he started, clutchfans were calling for his head. Dude just knows how to play asketball even though hes a bit of a tweener. Same with PPAt. Both of them have surprisingly good range--out to the 3 point line--I'd like to see them both rebound better, but they can be key pieces to a good team.

We head to Utah tonight for a tough back to back. We have a tough week ahead with Chicago on Wednesday and closing off the week with New York coming to Houston for a Friday special...

They need to somehow win 2-3 this week or else theyll be in a huge hole with a touch schedule through December.

If they canbe within 2-3 games of .500 by the end of Dec, theyl be in the playoff hunt given their easier 2nd half schedule. If not, tehyll be gearing up for another low lottery pick.

Whew! Sloppy but good grind out win by the Rockets"
In response to In response to 0

Man they just kept grinding it out
-Harden played well.
-Asik made some huge defensive plays---wasnt reflected on the scoresheet--but just his presence was great. He made a clutch block on Joakim that sealed the game basically.
-Patterson made some great shots and hit the boards today.
-Chandler Parsons nice balanced game.
-Morris and Greg Smith gave them nice minutes
-Tony Douglas stepped up today and hit a huge 3, and played good D on Nate.He also made huge fts. he's 20-20 or 21-21 for the year.
- On the flip Jeremy was terrible. Hands down his worst game of the season. He needed to be taken out tonight. He started off fine in the first qtr, but he came back in the second qtr and was terrible. He had nothing for Nate. Any super quick attacking player like nate will give him problems, but tonight was a disaster. As he struggled on defense he lost more confidence on offense.

lol but Nate giveth and nate taketh away. As well as Nate played he made 2 key errors late. Went WAAAAAAAAAy under an Asik pick that freed up Tony Douglas for a go ahead 3, and then the next posession took the ball in too deep and committed a turnover.

Bulls D doesnt look as good as it did last year. My first time watching them this season. They gave up way more layups than I remember Thibs teams giving up.

No. Im talking the super quick guys like Nate. A guy like Aaron Brooks would. Wessy would.CP3 would. Bledsoe would Not just regular quick guys like Mike Conley. Also the ones that really attack and put you on your heels. A lot of pgs dont do that they facilitate the offense and pick their spots.

Overall that was a thorough asskicking wire to wire. Offensively when you have two guys that shoot over 50% and drop 30+ its gonna be tough to lose. I mean 131 points in just regulation? Thats some video game shit.51% from the field, 56% from three. We can't expect that every game. That shit is a once in a season thing.

Defensively I wasnt happy with the overall effort and closing out the 3 point line. Knicks finished shooting 43%, but a lot of misses came in garbage time. They were well over 50% most the game and made 17 3's. We did do a good job of limiting points in the paint and rebounding. What can I say about Asik and his presence.

Chandler Parsons great game. Almost offensively flawless. Did a great job of mixing it up for rebounds and steals. Defensively when he switched onto Melo, he made Melo work for his points. He's such a good all around player and has some really good upside. I think he has to get a little stronger but that will come with time.

James Harden looked like he has gotten his legs back after the flu. Either that or it was just the poor Knicks Defense. Dude got to the paint at will with his crazy two steps/side steps and didnt settle for jumpshots tonight. In the first half he sad some atrocious matador defense when he had two fouls but in the second he actually came up with some nice steals.

Asik great game defensively and on the boards. Can't rave enough about this kid. Feel weird saying that cause he looks like a sitcom dad. Like I said above, once his hands get a bit better hes gonna be a top Center in the league.

Jeremy Lin not a great game but solid. He started slow but again the porous Knicks defense gave him some of the easiest layup looks he had all season. Thanks Knicks for giving his confidence back. He even managed to make a 3. He continues not to get fouls called in his favor. LOL atthe end of the half when he got the ball before he lost it got half his tooth chipped, no call. He did a good job of rebounding and playing with more energy in the second half.

Patterson lol clutchfans have compared him to Mo Taylor. He has a diverse offensive game but dude can't rebound at all. I remember him being a decent rebounder at UK. I mean I see him getting good position and boxing out but then dudes just easily jump over his back and grab boards.

Douglas is heating up! Looks like he may be getting confidence back in his shot

Rest- Love the energy that Marcus Morris and Greg Smith bring to both sides of the floor. Daequan cook got some pt and after shooting a terible brick heated up. If we could get 10 minutes good D and a couple 3s from him thatd be helpful. We've missed Delfino.

Damn Id still love some more minutes at the 4/5 for Terrence Jones. Please dont try to make him guard Carmelo Anthony or similar again.

Another solid team effort.
3 players with double doubles. Harden, Lin, and Asik. Parsons with 7 rebounds of his own.
Offensively this team is fun to watch when theyre clicking and moving the ball.
Defensively still a lot of work to do. Theres some bad rotations and missed assignments. Asik helps make up for a lot but not all of it. Harden has some Amare like defensive lapses where he just lets guys go.

Harden started off with 9 assists in the first half but was taking some bad shots. In the second half he took great shots and brought his fg% up while still getting some dishes.

Asik just keeps getting better. What can I say? He dunked a couple balls tonight taht he wouldve had problems catching just a week ago.

Probably Lin's best game of the season offensively since games 1 and 2. The shot was falling and that opened everything else up and gave him confidence. Maybe getting the monkey off his back after the NY game was helpful. Did a great job of finding guys tonight...dropped some real dimes. At least 7 more open looks were missed, or guys got fouled.

Chandler continues to be great all around plugging in with whatever we need. He's made two three pointers in 11 consecutive. Longest streak in the NBA.

The young guys are playing hard PPAT had a career high...hit two of his 3s tonight. Wish he would board better, but his jumpshooting is real good for a pf.

Greg Smith is playing well. Lots of energy and he tries to finish everything. Hes keeping Terrence Jones off the court. Douglas hit a 3, thats helpful. Daequan cook also getting some minutes and hitting shots--we could really use that from him.

Marcus Morris got us started off right with 11 in teh 1st but didnt score again teh rest of the game. I like what he brings on both sides of the floor and with his intensity.

The one super puzzling thing was why the starters played the 4th qtr. Especially considering we fly to Minn for Sasha mcHale's Service and then back to OKC. We were up double digits. I mean the bench let the lead leak--and I know weve had trouble holding leads...but there was an opportunity to rest the starters at least 8 minutes in the 4th.

Oh well maybe theyll be playing off emotion tomorrow after the service and with James going back to OKC. They have a short trip from OKC home after Wed and rest until Saturday.

He needs to move his feet to get rebounds. And he gets left flatfooted on defense too many times as well.

It's all effort.

He's too wide that he should be creating space, getting position and has enough hops to go up there and get the ball.

Of course I'd like to see T-Jones more. But he has dudes ahead of him that are playing well.

Its weird I was gonna ask you--but I just looked up myself how he was as a rebounder at UK. Statistically he was good, and then I looked up youtube clips and saw some more decent rebounding--especially his freshman year...he had a high motor.

Now part of the issue is he's an away from the basket 4, so a lot of times he's floating 15-22 feet out. Great for his offense, but not good for rebounding. There was one play last night he made where he crashed from 15 feet out and got a nice putback. Would like to see that more.

Ive seen him a number of times get "good" inside position on guys but then he doesnt stick his butt back int them and box out. In the NBA, the real pfs and Cs can just outjump him.

I wish I could Frankenstein him and Tjones.

Now he's on the court looking exasperated when it's time to do anything but shoot jumpers.

i've been hoping that him facing the knicks would boost his confidence. He held his own against felton and apparently outplayed lowry...2 guys he's constantly compared to. When hou play phx?lol

hopefully he's got his confidence back and returns to his aggressive nature.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

That said...I'm seeing flashes. All he's gotta do is be a creator & facilitator he's smart and can figure it out I am not sold on his body being able to do what his mind is telling it to do though

This is like his rookie year. He will be up and down.

I never hated on Felton to Knicks. I knew he was gonna be alright.
That whole thing may work out for both parties.
Knicks have a smaller window and Felton is more solid and stable now game to game. I do wonder how/what Jeremy woulda learned from Kidd though. That woulda been nice.
Jeremy got to grow in a less pressurized city. Its crazy though --people who say NY didnt present more in endorsement opps were wrong. His jersey sales dropped off from #2 last April to out of the top 15.

Anyhow...

If Knicks dont win it in this 3-4 yr window though?
I do feel Jeremy will end up living up to that contract and will be better long term/potential wuse

Kelvin Sampson says Jeremy Lin got his "swagger" back in Friday's game against the Knicks and followed it with his best game of the season Tuesday.

Lin has 29 points, 13 assists, 11 rebounds, four steals and two 3-pointers in his last games and is shooting 61.9 percent from the field in that time. It's not the scoring and assist machine we saw during Linsanity, but he's getting closer to being the player Houston expected. He remains a must-start PG for fantasy purposes.

Theyve done a tremendous job of developing their talent in Rio Grande. I mean several of their current rotation players now spent time down there. They use it the right way. Its not even always to get players better, but just to build their confidence and keep them playing.

Overall I was proud of the team effort tonight. Given the circumstances...back to back, Sasha mchales funeral, travel back into one if te toughest places to play in a return games, starters having played 40 mpg the night before, missing our starting sf... I thought we did a good job of hanging around an not just getting run out the gym wire to wire. At the start ofthe 4th we had two wide open 3s missed that would've knocked the lead to 7. Missed those and okc hit two that took it to 16...ball game.
The tem defense was poor tonight. So many times okc made an extra pass and just made things look easy. We were. Slow on our rotations and continued to give hot guys open looks.

Harden-- strained too much to create. Okc knew he was gonna do this and defended him well. He stopped the ball too much early on. Ended up with 17 with most his PTs coming from the line. His defensive effort is really bad at times.

Ppat-- would still like to see better rebounding but he's shooting the ball as well as any pf in the league right now including lamarcus and ibaka. If be could just give us a consistent 7-8 Rebs a game I'd be thrilled.

Asik--what can I say? Dude is gonna be a monster. Really does get better every game. He had one move last night where he caught it at the elbow, attacked the defender, did a hesitation dribble, but missed the shot. But yea his touch gets incrementally better each game it seems. Defensively he's a great presence and does a good job of clearing the glass. Sometimes he gets taken out for long stretches when teams go small.

Lin--okc played d like Miami did last year. They sent their bigs aggressively to hedge him and force him left. He did a better job of taking care of the ball but there's gotta be a balance. On a night where parsons is out he's gotta take more than 5 shots and be aggressive. He did a good job on Westbrook all night and caused at least 3 of wessys turnovers and rarely gave him a wide open look.

Bench and others-- daequan looked decent tonight. He's not gonna play 20 mpg but at least we know we got a guy who can hit some shots. Douglas looked real lost tonight as did Terrence jones. Mook Morris also didn't have his best game but that happens when you play durant. I thought Greg smith started well with 2 put acid but then kinda faded.

This team can be so fun/frustrating to watch. It makes sense since they are the youngest team in the league--but damn I'm aging at 2x the rate watching them. They had all 5 starters hit double figures for the 4th game last night and are one of two maybe three teams with 5 starters who average double figures. Unlike the other sure team (portland) they have a bench. The other team is Phx but theyve switched starting lineups a lot throughout the season.

First the fun, at their best they play uptempo basketball, they are extremely unselfish, and almost all of their players who play can score. They get in passing lanes and create turnovers, and overall just play with a lot of hustle and energy. Over the last 5 games they are the highest scoring team in the league. When you look at the league leaders in team scoring, they are near the top with the teams most people would consider "elite."

On the flip side, they dont defend well as a team. they let people move into the paint too easily with flash cuts, and they really a lot on Omer to clean up. As good as Harden is on offense, he really has some Amare moments on defense every game where he just lets people go to the basket and doesnt even try. So far I have yet to see the coaching staff hold him accountable, but for the team to eventually take the next step he will have to make that commitment to at least make the effort. When you look at team defense, they are the one team at the top of that list who gives up the most points. Thats why theyre sitting at .500. Also, turnovers continue to be a problem. Its not only Jeremy, the whole team has a bad penchant for making "tough angle" passes that they really dont need to.

But last night 5 minute streaks of dominance were followed by 5 minutes of futility and mistakes. They have to get more consistent throughout the course of a game.

Asik- Im putting him at the top of the list tonight because like I keep saying, its like he keeps getting better and better every game. He had 2 plays tonight where he caught the ball in the high post, surveyed the floor, saw everyone helping off, and took his man to the bucket. One time for a big dunk. He also made 2 huge 1 on 1 defensive plays vs Al Jefferson at the end. Right today he's a top 5 C in the league and is gonna be top 2-3 by the end of the season with more upside. I really pray he stays healthy. He's one player the Rockets have no replacement for.

PPAT- We gonna change his name from 2 Pat to 3 Pat. Dude is on a tear. He's hit 20 points in 4 straight and he continues to get open looks because teams help off to defend Harden and Lin penetration. He "seems" like the weakest link on offense but he isnt. Dude is trending like one of the top shooting PFs in the league right now. I mean hes shooting well over 50% just shooting jumpers and 3's.

Chandler- Great to have him back. He's just so steady and does everything well. Plus the ladies love him.

Harden- I was really impressed with how unselfish Harden played tonight--and really during this 5 game run since the Knicks. He definitely goes for his and there are times when he forces things, but it isnt every play. He will go long stretches where he plays facilitator and he's a great passer. Tonight there were at least 4 plays where he shoulda got to the line in the first half, no call.
Defensively I want to see more effort. Just no excuse for some of the effort he shows.

Lin- Another good game. Probably his 2nd or 3rd best game of the season. He's starting to hit that jumpshot more and its opening everything else up, along with making him more confident. Apparently he flew his shooting coach in from the Bay and they made an adjustment to his shot. Everything was short so they had him take some arc out of his jumpshot. Tonight he had a stretch in teh 4th quarter where he just took Mo Williams to the hoop 3 times in a row while playing steady defense.

Bench- Every game we have 1 or 2 different guys step up. Greg, Morris, Delfino,Douglas. Its a good thing to have. I like that the bench plays hard. Sometimes when Douglas is in the offense gets stagnant, but he does a good job of disrupting offenses cause he can pressure the ball higher than Jeremy can. It was great to have Delfino's shooting and veteran presence back. Hopefully that groin stays healthy.

Oh and here are the Jeremy Lin highlights from the game. Wish they were team highlights but I dont make these. I think some Chinese Bol does.(not a starting pg, shouldnt be in the league if not for "linsanity") hmmm....

http://youtu.be/M2gJLHLEO7o

Tough Schedule week ahead. Lakers, Spurs Dallas, Spurs....yikes. Will be happy with 2-2, thrilled with 3-1

This might sound completely insensitive an all given the things that happened, but:
Should Sampson be the coach full time? It seems as though the offense is more fluid, and even with some of the mistakes they make, they are way more tolerable. They are a hustle team that runs the break well, and are looking to their backcourt to make the vast majority of the plays (between Lin & Harden). Even on bad shooting nights, their hustle and Asik on the boards keeps them in the game (especially when Harden gets to the line). It just seems as though the team responds more with Sampson at the helm.

I don't want to knock McHale with such a tragedy looming in his personal life, but from a basketball standpoint, it seems as though Sampson has a pulse on the strenghts and weaknesses of the team, and puts them in the best position to win games.

Ive been wondering myself as a fan. Whtever he decides to do right now I understand and deserve. His best aspect as a coach is he's a player's coach and most players love him.

Sampson's had his ups and downs. He had some questionable substitution patterns early on and I think he's still trying to figure things out. Mchale was too. We had a almost all new roster of 20-24 yr olds, there was a learning curve. I think what Sampson is doing now Mchale would have eventually figured out once the rotations got set.

They are a hustle team that

Maybe not enough sample size for McHale. I think one thing id like to see out of Harden is holding everyone including Harden more accountable on defense (a la woody for Melo and JR). We can be fun to watch and even make some noise, but unless we start to play defense as a team too, we'll lose to the top tier teams.
I mean im fine with him coaching out this season, but I would look for a new coach this offseason if Mchael doesnt come back. Thast said its hard to do if Sampson gets this team to sneak into the playoffs...he will probably be back.

We're still looking at a .500 record with Sampson. Part of it is Patterson , Chandler, and Lin have all been playing better in the past two weeks. Im not sure how much/how little of that can be attributed to Sampson yet. I think ill have a better idea by mid-late January if hes still coaching.

Damn do we come out flat after 2+ day breaks....

A game we had no reason to be in, but also a game we had no reason being so far behind. I think LA2Philly would agree that even though the Lakers opened up that big lead they werent playing particularly great. It wasnt bad, but they were making a lot of tough shots. The one thing they were doing was stopping penetration.

But yea second half...We just kept grinding and getting those offensive rebounds. Hats off to Toney Douglas for a great game and giving a fuck you to D'antoni for benching him lol. Gotta love it.

Best of all for the Rockets, the team is really learning to trust each other. Thats one thing we did down the stretch while the Lakers got stagnant and started Kobe watching.

Harden-- was terrible in the first half but really picked up his playmaking and patience in the second half.

Douglas-- great game on both ends. He was everywhere including 3 offensive rebounds. I was sad to see his ft streak end.

Asik-- not his best game. I wanted to see a better second showing vs Dwight but it didnt really happen.

Greg Smith-- Way to step up big Greg. He showed his potential tonight and why Terrence Jones cant get off the bench right now.

Delfino- He really helps glue the bench and starters together.

Parsons- Not a great game statistically but was solid and didnt really hurt us all game.

Jeremy- never got in the rhythm after he picked up his 2 fouls and got benched early. Douglas definitely deserved to play tonight and got us the win.

Off to SAS

I finally got a chance to watch this game last night on the DVR after a busy weekend and wish I hadnt. Not sure if it was the teams worst game of the season, but definitely the most disappointing. I mean this slow start bullshit is becoming a pattern. These dudes come out with absolutely no energy, and have to chip away at the lead. On Friday night vs SAS, looks like they were unsuccessful. VS Dallas, they did it but then pissed away another decent sized lead over a team they shouldve beat, period.

The other thing thats looking consistently bad whether McHale or Sampson is defense. Were giving up way too many open looks, everywhere. Teams shoot 3% higher from us from three than they do vs the next worst team in the league. Some of that is attributed to uck and randomness, but 3% gap is too big to ignore, a lot of that is slow rotations and not making a commitment to go over screens.

Now McHale. Im glad your back for personal reasons but that was an absolutely deplorable job of coaching. Yall Laker fans wanna talk about poor substitution patterns? Try McHale letting guys play for a full 12 minute qtr several times in this game. Where the fuck do they do that at?

No this part has nothing to do with Jeremy Lin getting benched for absolutely no reason at all (ill get to that). But he played 3 players the whole 4th qtr with no rest. Even in the 3rd qtr, when he played Jeremy, he played him the whole 3rd qtr with no rest, and did it in the 2nd qtr with some other players too?

Who still does that--esp in a game where we had a nice lead. If you wanna play Douglas in more in the 4th, fine, but take him out for 3-4 minutes to get a breather--especially when he isnt used to played 35 mpg. Get Harden out for some rest. Bron gets rest, Kobe gets rest. That shit was absolutely maddening.

Oh and why the fuck did one of the league's best rebounders play 20 fucking minutes? Sure he was struggling, but you only gave him 20 minutes.

In terms of benching Jeremy, not sure what hes was trying to accomplish with that. He said Douglas brought a different defensive energy. You fuckin idiot, Mayo dropped most of his 40 on Douglas. There were several times at the end of teh game when Mayo was just left wide open despite being hot as shit---hell it might be because you played Douglass the whole 4th qtr dumbass.

Oh and Harden tweeked his ankle before halftime, but you play him the whole 4th? come on.

McHale was really frustrating to watch. Ill chalk it up to it being his first game back. The problem is that because of his personal situation, he probably wont be canned til the end of the season.

Really tough game with SAS tonight, I expect much better than Friday

He gave all the right answers to the media but you could tell he was confused on why he got benched. There was a game last week vs the Lakers that Douglas helped win, shouldve been benched that game. The Dallas game, I have no clue.

Lin's contract is the only thing that is keeping him in the starting lineup at this point.

but at this point with this team, no. Its the youngest team in the league and there werent big expectations coming into the season. That changed a bit with Harden, but its not like were making a run at a championship this year. Tony Douglas has been just as bad if not worse than Lin most the season. I mean hes shooting a lower fg% than Jeremy Lin--not even sure how thats possible.

The other factor is Douglas has had enough court time over his career to know what we can expect from him and his contract is up next season (I think the knicks are paying it anyways).

Jeremy's on year one of a three year contract in his first full season as a starter. You gotta let him play through it. If things change and we are really fighting for a playoff spot and Douglas is playing hands down better, fine. But Jeremy's gotta learn how to play the game and this 20 games, where hes had some nice games mixed in is not enough of a sample size to just cut ties with him.

I have no problem with Jeremy getting benched when hes not playing well and it puts the team in a position to win (like vs the Lakers) but the Dallas game was inexplicable--the substitution pattern and the fact that Mayo hung most his points on Douglas.

>Lin's contract is the only thing that is keeping him in the
>starting lineup at this point.

they don't have time to let Lin "play through it". I'm sure Morey wants him on the court but at this point I bet he's feeling some pressure to win too. The bottom line is Lin and Harden are not really a good fit together because they both are most effective with ball in their hands and the offense running through them.

This is the real issue^^^^^^^^

I've come to the point that its obvious Lin and Harden just don't mix....And given Lin's inconsistencies on the court I think he would flourish being a sixth man type player coming off the bench....That way he can dominate the ball....

What Houston needs is a in-his-prime Derrick Fisher type PG that can play D and stroke the 3 with ease...If the Rockets get that, they will be dangerous...

Most of Lins best games this season have also been games where harden played well. Lin doesnt need the ball al the time to be effective--but what he does absolutely have to do more is learn to be aggressive when he does get the ball and take advantage of his opportunities when he does get a chance. He cant just pass it and go stand in the corner. Theres been games where he was more aggressive and Harden played fine and they won.

The whole team had no camp time together as it is and were just 20 games in.

U say Lin doesn't need the ball? I think we have been watching two different players, homie...

Again, I'm not on that Lin is terrible train...I see what he brings to the court: the size, his ability to make things happen on the offensive side of things...

But the question is this....If Tony Douglas is finishing games (again...TONY DOUGLAS!!!!!) then what does that say for the compatibility of Lin and Harden?

If Lin can suddenly transform himself into a 3 point shooting PG, then you guys should be OK...Beyond that, I don't know...

http://blog.chron.com/ultimaterockets/2012/12/for-jeremy-lin-a-year-later-a-much-better-way-to-spend-christmas/

Of all the reminders that Jeremy Lin received about how much his life has changed in just a year, Christmas with the Rockets brought memories flooding back of a day he thought his career might be over after only the briefest hint of a start.

“I knew it was exactly a year ago on this day I got cut,” Lin said Tuesday. “It’s only been a year, man. It’s crazy. It’s ridiculous. It’s so different now. I’m so blessed to be here. A year ago, I thought, this could be it for me.”

The Rockets had hoped to keep Lin on the roster after 12 days of the lockout-delayed training camp, but needing a roster spot to add Samuel Dalembert and unable to find a trade to clear a roster spot, they released him.

“I got released on Christmas,” Lin said. “Christmas Eve they called me and said, ‘Just give us a sec. Stay in Houston until tomorrow because we’re going to try to keep you.’ About 1 o’clock in the afternoon on Christmas, my agent called me and said they couldn’t get anything done and I got waived. I took a flight home at like 5 p.m.”

Lin was celebrating the holiday with his family, but after the news from the Rockets, the day took a considerable turn.

“When we flew home, we couldn’t get on the same flight,” Lin said. “We were all on different flights. It was just a mess of a Christmas. The good thing is we were all together for the first part of the day. It was just a tough day in general. I was hoping to stay and not get cut.”

Considering all that happened since, Lin said “It really is crazy. I did think about it today. It’s only been a year.”

Parsons’ knee worsens after win

Rockets forward Chandler Parsons left the United Center limping, with his right knee beginning to swell.

Parsons collided with Marco Belinelli while trying to draw a charge late in the first half.

Parsons did not have problems with the knee during the game, scoring 19 of his 23 points in the second half, when he made seven of 10 shots and had four rebounds.

“I can’t bend it at all now,” Parsons said. “I’m going to start some rehab on the plane and start icing it.”

Jones rejoins D-League team

The Rockets will send forward Terrence Jones back to their NBA Development League affiliate this week.

In his previous two games with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, Jones averaged 22.5 points and 17.5 rebounds.

With Jones assigned to the D-League and Royce White not with the team, Patrick Patterson returned to the active list, but he did not dress.

Patterson stepped up his on-court rehab on Tuesday but is expected to be out with a bruised right foot for all three games this week.

Greg Smith: I Have a Big Chip on My Shoulder for Not Getting Drafted
by: Joseph Treutlein - Director of Scouting/Analytics
January 7, 2013
From the D-League Showcase in Reno we take a look at a major success story in Greg Smith of the Houston Rockets, who is flourishing after being called up from their affilates in Rio Grande Valley.

Following an inconclusive two-year stint at mid-major Fresno State, Greg Smith took a risk in the summer of 2012 by declaring for the NBA draft. Many would've bet some team would take a flier on the still developing big man in the second round at least, but no team did.

After the summer, with the lockout in full stride, Smith had to take a roundabout route to the NBA, with the D-League's Rio Grande Valley Vipers his final pit stop. Smith, like many others before him, used the D-League as a launching board to quickly establish himself as a player who slipped through the cracks, and one teams should take a second look at.

Posting a decent sample size of very impressive pace-adjusted numbers early in the D-League season last year, Smith caught the attention of the Houston Rockets, who he'd spent 10 days with in training camp a few weeks earlier. It wasn't long before the Rockets offered him a three-year contract and added him to their growing stable of developing young players, and it's come to pay off for them in a big way thus far this season.

Smith is averaging nearly 15 minutes per game for the Rockets while posting the third highest FG% in the entire NBA and fitting in seamlessly to the Rockets' potent pick-and-roll attack. The 21-year-old big man also looks like a different player on defense and the boards than he ever did in college, clearly buying into the Rockets' high-effort culture and making their investment look like it's going to pay off.

We had a chance to catch up with Smith earlier this week to talk about his journey to the NBA, the time he's putting in developing for the Rockets, his record-setting hand size, and his growing penchant for throwing down monstrous dunks.

US Presswire

JT: To start off, for people not familiar with your background, can you talk about the path you took getting from Fresno State to the NBA?

GS: Fresno State was a small school. I came up with fairly good numbers, averaged around 11 or 12 points and eight rebounds. We didn't have a very good season, went about 15-16 or something like that. I then entered the draft figuring I could be a pick in the mid-first round, or second round. Just getting picked anywhere would've been good for me.

I did 22 workouts for 22 teams and went to Chicago for the draft combine, and then when draft night came, I didn't get drafted. It was kind of a disappointment, but also a blessing to learn that everything isn't given to you; you have to earn it. So that made me think about what I had to do make it to the NBA eventually. So I just started working harder and spent more time at Impact with Drew and Joe Abunassar.

Then I got a call from my agent about going to play in Mexico during the lockout. At first I didn't want to play in Mexico. Something about it, I just didn't want to go there, but then I decided I was going to go out there and play, five or six months out there, and when I first got there, it was a difficult thing for me, being away from my family and in a different country. It was right next to the United States, but it's a different culture and everything, so it was kind of weird at first, but then I learned a lot about myself - growing up and maturing. And I played there for about four months, and the first month it was kind of hard playing, because I just didn't think it was going to be good for me, but I learned a lot playing against grown men who don't care who you are or what your name is and this and that. They played hard, and I learned that in the first month, then I got used to it and started playing good, learning my game more.

Then once the lockout ended, I came back during training camp, signed with the Houston Rockets, and was there for a week and a half. I played two preseason games - I didn't play a lot of minutes, but they already had their 15-man roster, so it was kind of tough for me to slide in there, so I got cut the day before Christmas, went home to be with my family, and just thought to myself "I should be on an NBA roster right now." Whether it was playing or developing or something.

Then the Rockets called me and said they wanted to put me on their D-League team and see if you develop and we can talk in the future, so I said, you know what? Instead of going overseas, I think I'm going to play in the D-League and showcase my skills and maybe any team could pick me up.

So I'm in the D-League, and I was there for maybe about a month and a half, and I started getting calls from my agent that I was playing well and a lot of teams liked me. Then the Rockets called and offered me a contract, and that really motivated me to work hard, because they gave so much time and faith into me, helping me develop. Because even though they cut me, it still was a good feeling that they kept an eye on me. It's not like they cut me and didn't discuss it any more. They kept an eye on me and offered me again, and that's why I'm thankful for them as an organization. And that make me strive more to work out and improve my game and continue to develop and be the best man I can be on the team.

That's where I'm at right now. I've just been working hard. I've been here the whole summer and the preseason, the whole summer - I only went home for a week. I was working with the coaches, getting a feel for what they want from me, and now it's paying off a lot.

JT: Do you have an regrets now coming out of college as a sophomore, given that you didn't get drafted?

GS: I would say, early on, when I first came out of college and didn't get drafted, I had a lot of regrets. I was thinking if I should've stayed another year or two years or came out after my freshman year. There are a lot of things on your mind when you don't get drafted, because you think you should be - you know, that a team should've fallen in love with you, but then once you start growing up, like as of right now, today, I have no regrets of leaving college because I feel like it was the best decision for me to leave, because I felt like with my skills, with my body type, I would've been in college for a year or two and I don't think I would've gotten any better because I was bigger than a lot of guys, and it was getting kind of easy. My team wasn't really - and you know, we didn't have a lot of superstars, and we didn't have the best competition, so it wasn't like I could just go out there, I could dominate, but it wouldn't help me or benefit me getting better as a player and a person and maturing. I was at home, I was with my family, so I got a lot of things, so it kind of held me back. I feel like right now, at this point, that was the best decision for me to leave at that time. Then to not get drafted, it shocked me and made me work harder and have a better work ethic, be hungry, and want to be better as a person and a player. It helped me a lot. No regrets.

JT: How do you feel it helped you become a better person and player?

GS: Basically, just learning more about yourself. Growing up, everybody, whatever you say, they agree with or this and that, they say you're a superstar and you're going to get drafted and stuff like that. But you learn you have to grow up and mature and take life serious and that there are speed bumps in your life. That's what I've been dealing with those whole time, and it helped me out becoming a better uncle to my nieces and nephews, better cousin to all the kids who look up to me, being a better father to my daughter. It makes me be better because I understand how life is and how life's too short and you have to work hard to be what you want. Playing in the NBA is my dream, so I learned I have to work hard to get there and you can't take any shortcuts to get there.

JT: So on the court this season, you've been featured very heavily in the Rockets' pick-and-roll game (and with great success), whereas looking back at your college tape, you actually did very little of that at Fresno State. How you have been able to make that adjustment so quickly?

GS: Coming out of high school, my coach really drove home to all the players to be really good at a lot of things and not just one thing, so he had me working on a lot of things, like the pick-and-roll. And we took the time to watch film on not just the post players rolling and stuff, but watching the guards come off the picks and how they read it. So as you learn that stuff, how the guards come off the pick-and-roll and read it, you learn more as a roller, and that's what really helped me out.

At Fresno State, our system wasn't really about pick-and-roll, but it was important to my game to understand the system and watching my favorite player, which was at the time Amare Stoudemire. It helped me a lot watching him with Steve Nash, and how he rolled, or slow-rolled to the middle of the lane to catch it, and finish off the pass or the lob. It helped me a lot watching film and practicing a lot on it. It's really my game. That's really what I am - a pick-and-roll player, and I feel like I'm good at that.

JT: So on the other hand, in college you were actually featured a lot with your back-to-the-basket game, but that's not something that's really been used much with the Rockets so far. Is that something you believe you can contribute with more in the future?

GS: Yes, I believe so. I think the organization knows that I have a good offensive game, on the block, facing up, with my back to the basket, and they know that, and that's why we're still developing it and working on it, because in the future, I think they really like me in the long run, to be a player on the team for a long time. So we don't want to rush three things, and try to like add three things to my game that I already have. Just keep developing slowly, being a pick-and-roll player who can finish on the block, I have a one or two dribble to the middle jump hook, which I've been doing since I was in maybe sixth grade, so it's not really that hard when you've been doing it for that long. I think in the future a lot of teams and players will start knowing that I have a lot of offensive game, but for right now, nobody knows but me and my team, and that's the crazy thing about it, but it will come out in the future.

JT: What's your experience been like playing for Kevin McHale, one of the most fundamentally sound post players ever? Do you get the chance to work with him on your skills at all?

GS: Yeah, I do sometimes. He gives us a lot of pointers on how to use our feet and angles and everything about when the defender is guarding you, how to use up and unders. He's one of the greatest big men of all time. You cannot knock that; he's a great player, he knows how to score. I was watching one game where I think he scored like 48 against Detroit and I seen all the moves he put, and it's crazy, but then he comes in and he tells you you have the footwork and the angles, but you've got to use it to your advantage. And about putting a shoulder to the defender's chest and making him back down to get the bucket. It's great playing for him. He helps a lot.

JT: Looking at your stats, you're actually rebounding the ball better in the NBA than you did in college, even before accounting for the much higher level of competition. Is that something you've put more of a focus on since being a pro?

GS: Yes. I think that rebounding is a lot different from college to the NBA. In college, I wouldn't say it's easier or harder, but, I don't really know how to explain it. I just know in the NBA, it's more of a mental thing. You have to want to get the rebound. You can't just go out there and say I want to get the rebound, it's coming my way, I'll get it. You have to have the mental attitude to go out there and get the rebound. I'm out there playing against guys like Dwight Howard and Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph. You have to battle, they want to push and shove, and all that, so it helps me a lot to have my strength, because I know I'm strong enough, but they're strong, too, so it helps me a lot to go out there and be like "I'm not going to lose this battle. I'm going to win this battle and get this rebound." And that's why I think my numbers have gotten better.

JT: A lot is often made about the size of your hands, which were the largest ever recorded at the NBA combine. Do you feel that gives you a big advantage on the court?

GS: It does, because I grew up in a family where I was the only person to play basketball. Everyone else played football, and everyone, I believe all six uncles I have played receiver, so I got a lot of practice catching the ball, and I think that helps me a lot with catching the ball on the court. And I have big hands, which helps me even more, because I can catch the ball with one hand or two. So I'm on the court, I know I'm snagging a ball off a rebound or a bounce pass or whatever it is, I'm catching it. I rarely drop a pass, and that's what my teammates love about me. They know they can have the confidence to throw the ball wherever and I'm gonna catch it.

JT: Since college, which of your skills do you feel you've improved the most with?

GS: Since college, I would say my motor, and my ability to get off the ground a little faster. Because in college I was just mainly using my strength a lot. I was all strength, just powering guys out the way and using that. Now I use my quickness, and just basically getting my motor running, being relentless on the glass and running-wise.

JT: You mentioned your quickness and running. Have you noticed a big difference being part of an NBA strength training program?

GS: Yes, a big difference. They have us in there every day, before games working out on certain things, throughout the whole season. That's what I like about it.

JT: Do you feel you still have more room to grow athletically? Is that something the Rockets' staff emphasizes with you?

GS: I believe so. They tell me a lot. I'm not even done growing, that's the crazy part about it. They know that my body's still maturing to grow up, and that my muscles are still coming and my shoulders are getting wider. And I'm losing a lot of fat and gaining more muscle, so I'm getting stronger, and it's helping a lot.

US Presswire

JT: In watching your game tape, you seem to dunk the ball on a very high number of your possessions. Is trying to finish so often with dunks something you focus on?

GS: One thing I've heard from every coach I've had throughout my whole life, well since I start dunking, was "If you dunk the ball, it's the highest percentage chance you're going to make the shot or get fouled," so if I try to dunk the ball every time, I'm either going to get a bucket or get fouled and shoot free throws. So that's just one thing I learned when I was younger. So now every time I catch the ball, I just want to dunk everything.

JT: The Rockets are known for their advanced statistics department. Do you get to see any of that as a player? Do the coaches ever give you suggestions or say things such as "The stats say you should do more of this, or less of that, or anything of that nature?"

GS: The coaches won't tell me much about stats and stuff like that, because they don't want you to over-think. They just tell you directly, you know, like watching today's game, you need to be on help-side quicker, or you need to be up more on your screen coverages, so they let you know what you've been doing right and what you've been doing wrong.

JT: When you signed your contract with the Rockets last year, it was only half-guaranteed for this season, and I don't believe it's guaranteed at all for next season. Did they talk to you about the things you need to do as a player to stick around?

GS: Yes. They told me to work hard, mature, and not having any letdowns or off-the-court issues. Basically just come to work every day and not be late, work, develop. And they love my passion for the game, so I think I'll stick around for a long time.

JT: Do you have any chip on your shoulder about not being drafted? Is proving the people who passed on you wrong a source of motivation for you?

GS: Yes, it's a lot of motivation. I have a big chip on my shoulder for not getting drafted. You know, if I came out freshman year of college, I was tempted to leave because a lot of people said I could've went mid first round or lottery and had a lot of potential, so going into my second year and not getting drafted, I felt people took their eye off me. And right now, I'm thankful the Rockets gave me a chance, and now I want to show every other team in the NBA why they should've have passed on me and why the Rockets got a good player.

JT: Do you think maybe it's a bit of a blessing in disguise the way things turned out, given you landed with a team so focused on player development and that are seemingly very committed to your development?

GS: Yes, it's a blessing in disguise. I think God put me here and led me to this path and threw me all those struggles to get here and realize and understand why I'm here. I really understand it now, and I'm blessed for it.

JT: When you compare you not getting drafted to the way you're having success on the court for a playoff team, do you think you've improved considerably from your time in college or is this more a matter of you just having the opportunity to show what you can do?

GS: I would say both. Having the opportunity to play right now, and showcase my skills, and also developing and getting better. Last year I didn't get to play in many games, so I had a quiet year, but this year I'm getting to play more and I'm getting to go out there and showcase a lot of what I can do. And the coaches have so much confidence in me, so whenever I go out there I play with confidence, and I think I will get better as time goes on.

JT: What's the area of your game you're working on the most right now to improve?

GS: I would say my face-up game and just trying to improve my game overall, on offense and on defense. I can play a lot of defense because I'm strong down low and I can hold my own, but I just want to get better with my quickness with blocking shots, and getting off the floor to dunk the ball a little faster.

JT: What do you think your biggest weakness is right now as a player?

GS: My biggest weakness? Not being as quick, and being able to learn the NBA game and system a little faster, the speed and pace of the game, that's what my weakness is right now.

JT: Where do you see yourself five years from now as a player? What will be different?

GS: I could see myself as a starting power forward or center for any team in this league, hopefully the Rockets. I could be a good player you can count on, a good player who can average good numbers and help a team win. And five years from now, I believe I could be an All-Star player.

JT: How about this season? What do you think your team is capable of?

GS: I believe my team is capable of making the playoffs and having a run for it, I really do. We have nice pieces. I know we're young, and we're still getting our chemistry together, but with James Harden and Jeremy Lin starting to play real good right now, and Chandler Parsons adding more to it, and Omer Asik - he's crazy how he can get 15 to 18 boards almost every game, and finishing down low and playing good defense, so I think our team has a good chance of doing a lot of things. I won't say we're going to win a championship right now, but I believe this season we're going to do a lot of good things.

liked the part about how the rox don't push the metrics stuff on the players, but work with the coaching staff to make sure the message is translated in applicable on-court ways.

gettin run out the building.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

hes gotten the guys to buy into his system though and they trust one another--thats one of the most important things for a coach. I mean I think this is also just a group of hungry, coachable guys...but we'll see. We've had little success over elite teams, play bad defense, but again thats not all on coaching.

I feel like hes done a better job at making in game adjustments. I love how he coached up Jeremy yesterday. When he benched him in teh second qtr him and Jeremy exchanged words, Mchale saw he was pissed and quickly clapped him up despite benching him. Jeremy was seething with arms crossed and everything. 2nd half, he played well, Mchale clapped him up, encouraged him, and left him in the game.

With all that said, barring a monumental collapse with the pace were going at--its hard to fire him.

Even though were still in the 8/9 seed and nobody expected us here....the team was TERRIBLE tonight vs a completely shorthanded Twolves team.

Tonight was bad...almost unwatchable. I think if Mchale loses again on Monday he may be gone. They cant really fire him since he lost his daughter, but maybe get him to step down.

Its not all his fault either but much like the Mike Brown situation, its clear he isnt the long term fit. You keep him and the team plays well again you risk not being able to fire him.

He justifiably benched Jeremy, Asik, and Parsons to start the 2nd half tonight but inexplicably didnt bench Patrick Petterson too. I guess he figured hes since Markus Morris and knows its not that much better.

Im expecting a coaching change or trade splash soon.

92. "Jeremy Lin builds team unity via texting!"
In response to Reply # 0

how can you hate this guy unless you hate his jesus freakiness?

When guard Jeremy Lin came up with a sore elbow, he joked it could have been from excessive playing of video games.

Teammate Terrence Jones offered another possible source. Less than a week after Jones returned from the NBA Development League and earned a place in the power forward rotation, Jones said Lin had sent text messages to him and other Rockets players sent to the Rio Grande Valley Vipers throughout their time in the D-League.

“He texted me after almost every game, especially if I did good,” Jones said. “I texted him after his games, too, when I was down there. I talked to James (Harden) after almost every game. A lot of guys checked with me, but J-Lin especially. J-Lin was always texting everybody. J-Lin texted me every game pretty much every time I went down.

“It definitely helped to know he was watching, my teammates were cheering for me to do well down there. It means a lot.”

Lin said he made a point to keep up with the play of his teammates in the D-League and to let them know they had not been forgotten.

“I’ve been in those shoes before,” Lin said. “I know what it’s like. A little something like that, keeping up with them, making sure they feel a part of the team and giving them that confidence — I think that’s really important for their growth as a player.”

I think for me, I still remember the D-League like yesterday. I still try to encourage them. Anything I can do to help them, I try to do.”
