"Wizards Mania: The 2012-2013 Campaign Starts NOW!"

Hey there Wiz-Nutz,

I'm still rooting for the team despite our anemic bench, shoddy coaching and the inability of our star player to show something other than speed and hops.

We're guard heavy per usual. I like Bradley Beal (nickname forthcoming) and of course I'm excited to see John "The Great" Wall come back from his injury and prove to us he can do more than run post routes. The addition of Trevor Ariza and Emeka Okafor can be good for us, given how brittle Nene appears to be of late.

Shelvin Mack is back and I'm glad...Cartier Martin does what he does and Chris Singleton should provide some punch off the pine. But the thing is, there's no second unit guy that can strike fear into teams. I'm afraid Coach Wittman is gonna try to "Iron Five" the squad and we'll be all injured by February. I hope we get lucky as the season progresses and get another big and a scorer worth their salt.

As always, I'm rooting until the (inevitable) bitter end.

GO WIZARDS!

And this player named Robert Griffin III is playing pretty well. I think I will keep paying attention to that storyline for now.

I doubt the Wizards will do enough for me to even show a little bit of interest in their season.

usually by now the skins are so bad that the wizards are a welcome diversion. not this year. and definitely not without Wall and Nene.

I hope beal takes advantage of this opportunity though to be THE man for a team.

I like Beal tho..Plays older than what he actually is. Wall.. J still broke. Got a championship guard in Cassell as a coach, who made a living off off the mid range and
I still don't see improvement. Too much DC nightlife??... I was in the tunnel / locker room area after the George Mason practice and the boy had a killa waiting for him lol. Pargo and Mack should provide solid minutes in that back court. Not sure about Price and we know what Crawford brings.

That if for no other reason should give us hope.

Booker's my favorite Wizzie.

Ariza looks like he forgot how to play basketball though. I'm nervous.

Let's see what Price does with Wall out.

In response to Reply # 0

Ted is using his Capitals rebuild approach for the Wizards, and I don't think that wait and see shit is as applicable in the NBA. You have to REALLY strike gold in the draft to build a title contender almost exclusively through prospects (Rose, Durant, LeBron.)

Otherwise you get inspired in free agency.

We voluntarily don't do that. It's as if Ted is saying "hey look, our city isn't sexy and we can't lure free agents anyway so let's just do what we can." Meanwhile, the Nats proved this wrong. They knew they couldn't land Teixera but they went nuts deep in pursuit of him anyway, just to prove that they were willing to pay and that they deserved to be relevant. They overpaid on Werth, but I maintain that if ever they were going to get serious about bringing in stud FAs it would take something this splashy to get everyone's attention. And just last summer they came neck and neck with the Tigers for the services of Prince Fielder.

Why don't the Wizards ever even try? Why is this culture of "sufficient enough" acceptable? Because, in truth, Leonsis isn't ruthless enough. He smiles more than Danny. He's far more accessible than Danny. But in truth he's far too lukewarm and the Wizards are proof of this. Blatche should've BEEN gone for pennies on the dollar. So should Grunfeld. So should Boudreau long before he did get canned. Shit at this point maybe McPhee deserves a look too.

His passivity scares me and I must admit that I'm beginning to think he isn't up for this job of winning championships.

The obvious being a healthy Wall and Nene and mayhaps a much better coach?

I can't figure it. It's a great town to ball, you got a fan base that'll get behind you if you work hard and hell you got a future star in Wall (if he shifts his game and gets a jumper). I look at our team and see hope and I think Beal got enough in him to scare teams but what are we truly missing?

15. "ATTITUDE..."
In response to Reply # 13

...really, that's all it comes down to...attitude.

folk can say what they want about the #NATITUDE campaign the Nationals had this season, but it really embodied the change in the PLAYERS!!!

the only players who even remotely have attitude on this team are Booker and Seraphin. even when they were/are losing, those two always hustle and play hard 'til the whistle blows. but let's not kid ourselves, they're role players and that's what they're suppose to do.

for all his ability, John Wall hasn't shown me that he's actually a leader...especially in a tight game with under 5 minutes left in the 4th. considering he's gonna have the ball in his hands...that's a problem. just take a look at this: http://www.82games.com/1112/CSORT11.HTM. according to this, he's more likely to have a TO than hit a FT or FG. and that's suppose to be your ALPHA?

this team needs leadership. that's it. John Wall is not the guy...not right now.

honestly tho'...who's the leader on this team? who's the guy that commands respect from the opposing team? who's the guy that commands respect from his teammates? who's the guy that commands respect from the refs?

granted, those guys are REALLY hard to come by but they're extremely important for a team to win NBA games. it can happen for this team, but they just have to find the right guy(s). they got good pieces to be a solid team. let's hope tonite they actually start taking steps to become one.

they have completely and repeatedly failed to do this. they had a young core of Yi, Young, Thornton, McGee, Blatche and all of them are gone. this next batch of guys is a more serious bunch, but there is no reason to believe that we are going to get anything out of them.

it doesnt matter how great the city and fans are in the era of megateams. if you dont have 1-2 legit stars already on a team, you cant get even get reliable bench players in free agency. most megateams had a home grown superstar to attract other players (Pierce, Wade, Kobe, with D-will as the exception). Everyone knows Wall isnt there yet.

What is worse is that he is surrounded by #1s like Griffin, Irving, Rose and Davis. If those five players right today were in the same draft, Wall would go fifth.

Kevin Seraphin is doing exactly what these young kids are supposed to be doing. take advantage of opportunity and making the most of it.
he is gonna MAKE randy give him more tick by playing like that. okafor and nene will either be too hurt or too slow to do anything about it.

the offense is atrocious right now. too many new players, the PGs are below average and it doesnt appear that anyone knows when to pass or shoot.
the starters over the last two games has been offensive to watch.

vesely did aight defensively, he is what he is right now. but it is hilarious seeing the celtics pick and pop game of rondo and KG versus the wiz pick and stop game of "janerro price" and vesely.

and eff celtics fans in DC. them bammas were at verizon in droves. during critical 4th qtr periods they had LOUD "lets go celtics" chants going. disgusting.

There is reason to have hope.....

Seraphin. He's a double double machine in the making if he keeps on the trajectory he's on. Incredible touch around the basket, and he actually is showing range with a decent J. I'm liking that dude more and more.

Vesely was shooting J's. Ugh. I like the aggressiveness, but I really see him contributing more on the defensive end. Offensively, he just needs to take it to the hoop and maybe draw some fouls.

Okafor. While I got respect for him and what he's done in the league, we may have gotten a guy who is on his last legs. No burst vertically or horizontally. Don't know if we'll see the double-double guy he's been most of his career.

Point guard play was really atrocious. It's painfully obvious that none of these guys has the vision that Wall has. Or the precision with the ball. Some of the passes were way off target or ill-advised to begin with. Even when Wall returns, I'm for replacing these dudes.

Crawford did what was expected, he scored. Beal shot poorly and was pretty much invisible the whole night. Booker brought it. He's got heart and hustle and really good footwork under the basket. I'm hoping he and Seraphin can really hold the front court down.

Overall the Wiz should have won this one. We outrebounded the C's offensively and defensively and shot a slightly better percentage field goal wise and from the stripe. But we also had more turnovers and didn't have the execution needed to steal one from a good team.

80 more to go!

I think you can feel a couple of ways about this.

A. We competed with a championship-tested team till the very end two games in a row, or;

B. We suck and couldn't beat old-ass KG, non-jumping Paul Pierce and Ray Allen replacement Jason Terry.

I think I'll go with the former.

The game really illustrated what a floor general like Wall brings to the squad. We had entirely too many turnovers, and too mush loose play in the overtime session. A good floor leader calms all that down and finds the right guys at the right time.

Late in the game, there is not reason you need to give Kevin Seraphin the ball at the top of the key with three Celtics defenders in the backcourt. Like never.

Anyways, with all that said, Seraphin continues to impress. Great touch around the basket, competes, is in good shape and can run the floor and log heavy, productive minutes.

Beal!!!! Finally came alive and broke double digits. He definetly needs to look for his shot more. In the first half he was willing to move the ball around, but we need him knocking down shots and looking for opportunities.

Booker and Singleton both competed heavily. I think Singleton is really trying to impress being that there is sort of a logjam at the swingman position. And the way Webster shot last night, it's not going to be easy to move up the depth chart.

and lastly, Vesely. He's very tall.

in the end, the wiz have too many bench players getting starters minutes or playing in crunch time. seraphin, booker, crawford , singleton and price seem like a nice second unit that is tough, athletic can play some defense. crawford and seraphin can get buckets.

its good that seraphin is making mistakes now and getting this experience. you can see he was passing the ball out of the double teams better. you are totally right about him not being put at the top of the key in critical situations though.

i need wittman to publicly state that okafor has some lingering knee soreness, conditioning issues or something and then bench him for kevin. trevor ariza? ugh.

regardless of what vesely ends up being, right now singleton needs his minutes. chris poses more of a threat in the pick and roll and is a better on the ball defender. vesely really might be ready for a stint in the d-league. both singleton and webster should be getting his minutes.

With Okafor barely putting in 10 minutes a game right now, I think Vesely, though drafted and usually listed as a 3, is putting more minutes in at the 4/5. Earl Barron hasn't really touched the floor even though we have him on the roster as our backup 5.

so Booker(who to me is a definite 2nd unit guy) and Seraphin (who whould be working into a starter's role) still get some blow when they need it, and we can rotate between Webster (our best long range shooting 3) and Singleton (like you said, better defender and better slasher). Ariza can start off and serves mainly defensively.

I'm just guilty of having a bit of eternal optimism about the team and hope that guys like Vesely, Singleton, Booker and Seraphin (all guys in their 3rd yr or less) can still develop into key pieces for the squad.

Cause the fact is this: Even with Nene and Wall healthy, the team doesn't have a lot punch offensively unless those guys I just mentioned and Beal develop between this season and the next. Both Okafor and Nene are in the twilight of their careers and aren't going to get better or have less injuries going forward.

By the time I got home it was in the second quarter already.

Honestly, I can't make excuses for this team, but we've seen better from them already this year. There was no reason for them being blown out, but we really just had an awful shooting night.

When you miss 26 of 31 three pointers, maybe you should have looked for way more high percentage shots. This is particularly disappointing as we are supposed to be decent from beyond the arc with Pargo, Webster and Beal on the roster. Crawford too. Aren't those guys supposed to create space for for Nene, Okafor, Seraphin and Wall when we are in the paint? Sheesh.

Ariza came alive finally with 19 points, but someone really needs to step up.

I'm starting to wonder where in the hell all these Ray Allen comparisons came from when it comes to Beal. 1-11.

Dude. I put up 35pts with you last night on 2K13. What the fahhhk?

Honestly, even with Nene and Wall back, I don't know how much better this squad gets.

perhaps formed in his mind from dominating slower, shorter scrubs in highschool.

right now though, he is shooting like his college career suggested he would... and thats a huge L for Grunfeld.

its one thing for him to not put up points. his teammates are a bunch of misfit second and third stringers. but he is missing wide open jumpers. that is solely on him.

But I do remember people saying it during the draft and in other draft preview shows.

And he shot 44% from the field in college. Not a bad percentage for a 2. It's the 33% from 3pt. range he shot in college that worried me when we drafted him. But everyone said "so,what? He can get his own shot and can put it on the floor and finish at the hole"

I just would like to see this kid get some asshole in him and really go for his. What I've seen so far is too much passiveness. If he's the real deal, he needs to impose himself on the opposition.

Honestly, the coach might be the problem.

While I see him with the board during timeouts drawing stuff up, the team just is not executing the offense. Sometimes it doesn't look like we have an identifiable offense.

Either that or he's not able to instill offensive schemes with the players. Jamal Crawford (who really does have appeared to have upped his bball IQ) even said the team is forgetting plays.

At times it looks like a Wacky WallCrawler offense. Just throw stuff and guys in there and see what sticks.

But it's frustrating when they don't build off prior performances. I know part of that is the player's responsibility too, but Seraphin should have been fed the ball early in the game, and he wasn't.

The bigs weren't defending, rebounding or scoring. Beal wasn't shooting that well, but since you've given him the starting position, you might as well stick with him. Let him shoot into a rhythm.

Price going down with the rolled ankle isn't good as I really don't like to see Crawford play extended minutes at the 1 personally. Pargo. Sigh. And honestly, if Vesely can't show some tangible basketball skills, dump him.

>Honestly, the coach might be the problem.
I think we gotta let him get Wall back before we judge him. its not fair to fire him when he has price, pargo and crawford running the point. owners always fire a guy and THEN make trades or get back players from injury. why judge a guy when he clearly is working with broken pieces? yes, i'd rather have JVG, SVG, Sloan or other expensive coaches, but we dont need all that right now.

Seraphin needs as many minutes as possible. Okafor wont be on this team after this year, so there is no point in giving him lots of minutes to watch him rehab in games. let seraphin play - knowing that okafor will take his spot the second kevin gets a big head and goes young/mcgee on us.

again, vesely = d-league. can't give up on him so early. he needs minutes. just not at the NBA level.

We do need to see what he does with a healthy squad and a real playmaker, cause right now it's looking like chaos on the court....

I really don't see Seraphin going full blown knucklehead at all. Different upbringing, really coachable good guy from all reports. But I agree he needs the minutes. He gets rattled by double teams easily, and doesn't always make that quick move to the basket that he needs too. A little more battle testing is needed.

>again, vesely = d-league. can't give up on him so early. he
>needs minutes. just not at the NBA level.

When I say dump, d-league is essentially what I mean. He's got athleticism, height and some hustle, but not one identifiable basketball skill.

At least 1 person showed up last night to scream and Ted and Ernie. That's progress. Of course fans were disappointed when the WIzards refused to foul the Spurs in the last minute to get a shot at a free chicken sandwich.

Dreadful game.

I know it's just a blip on the radar to Lebron and nem, but it actually showed a little something......

Our bench is really decent. Webster, Seraphin (sometime starter), Singleton and Crawford got a lot of moxie.

And I really think we've seen a lot of growth from Crawford. He still guns a tad, but plays way more in the offense and plays smarter. Though his J isn't as sweet as Nick Young's, he's a much better player. He's where Young should have been 3 years ago.

Can't wait until we get Wall back and have someone to keep the team disciplined on the floor.

Wittman still has to work on his rotations though.

My boy rides so hard for Nick Young. I just made this point the other day. The strides that Craw are making now are the strides that Young should've made years ago. Nicky's not even trying to be a complete player or even 2 dimensional.

Craw's going to the basket and relying more on the mid-range. Beale too thankfully.

That's the only logical explanation, trying like hell to avoid paying anyone a max deal. They're content with Wall leaving, they're content with an empty arena, they're content with no Harden, they're content with no Caps because they're broke. Leonsis has to be completely cash poor.

Ernie part of the cause of that situation. No reason to put all that salary on mid, lower-tier talent.

If Leonsis is broke, then he need to sell something cause neither franchise is gonna make him much with the way he's handling things.

I'm not totally sure he's broke, but basically, Harden would have cost as much as Okafor and Ariza combined right? Maybe a little more? But the salary/luxury tax hit would have been about the same too?

There's no way you look at that trade and not pull the trigger. Harden is only 23 too? I like Beal, but not that much.

I think it's a combination of cash-strappedness and someone trying to prove they're a genius.

a max player is the centerpiece of a contender. he is not that for the rockets and wouldn't have been for the wiz cuz those teams dont have the right players yet. when this trade was supposedly considered, his value as a max guy was even more questionable due to his disappearance in the finals.

people are looking at this like the wiz turned this trade down last week, knowing what we now know about all the parties involved.

He is getting the 2nd contract max, around 15 mill a year. I don't think it is arguable that he isn't in that range considering his performance and the prices the market demands.

I mean, Roy Hibbert, Brook Lopez, Eric Gordon all got the same deal. Blake got more (due to all-star/ all-NBA clause?). And when you consider he is young as hell, and that: Bargnani is on 10mill a year, DeAndre Jordan is on ~9 mill a year, Rudy gay on 15 Mill, Montas wack ass is on 11 Mill.. that tells the market demands Hardens price.

Why doesn't this city care about the Wizards?
I've been living out here for about 2 years now and it doesn't take that long to notice how little the area cares about the Wizards. I feel like the DC United gets more love than them.
Has it always been this way or has the interest been in decline since they stopped making the playoffs?

Wiz/Caps/United - When they are playoff teams and winning, everyone's on board. I would estimate love for all those teams declines 30-40% when they are not winning, making the playoffs or have a star of some sort on the team.

Nats- We'll have to see. When they were sorry, some people still cared cause it was the return of baseball to the city. Now they are WS contenders, and hopefully will be for the next few years.

10th in defensive efficiency.
They're the only team in the top 13 that wouldn't be in the playoffs if they started today.

The first thing out of Scott Brooks' mouth was how good the Wiz were defensively..so someone is paying attention. The problem was on offense, and that's improved (for now) with Wall's return. But we'll see how those numbers hold up on this road trip

i do have to give props to beal, tho. he looked scrubbish early on. i am almost confident that he'll hit an open jumper now...

It all starts with Okafor down low. He's one of the most fundamentally sound defenders in the league. Rarely gives up 3 point plays and seems to always be in position to play head up defense. Not flashy in the least and I don't mind.

But apparently this team can't play without Wall.

I still don't like him, but I can't complain much about the results thus far. He's made a big difference. I can't necessarily say that I see a big difference in him from last year skill-wise, but overall chemistry and how they have been playing is like night and day. Very cautious optimism though.

i agree with what SVG has been saying... wall cant be your best player. He can be a #2 or one of three equally skilled stars, but (#1 pick or not) he's not carrying any team.

beal's development is really gonna determine whether wall becomes elite or ends up being rod strickland (nothing to be mad about, just not savior material). him being a max contract guy in a couple years is questionable when he cant control his own future as a player.

And he has yet to do so. I will give him a slight benefit of a doubt due to injuries, but really, Wall is on the line between pretty good to average. If his potential is what he is currently doing at the moment, then the team has a lot of work to do in finding someone better to put beside him or replace him.

he's the engine that makes the team go and the team will only be good if there are parts around him.

It's not a coincidence they started winning when he came back. He creates opportunities for others. Get the big men easy looks down low and get the shooters clean looks from the outside.

The amount of stress he puts on the defense with his penetration and pushing the ball opens it up for everyone else.

And the parts around him right now aren't even great parts. Martell Webster, Ariza, Singleton, Seraphin, Booker are all below average to average ball players, but he makes it easy for them.

Things he has to work on now are mostly his jumpshot and lapses on defense.

Haven't been able to watch the last couple of games, but I've been box score checkin' like crazy.

Wall makes this team go. Period. Whether he's putting up big numbers or not. We're just a way better team with him on the floor. If everyone had been healthy from the start this season, I think we'd have at least a sixth seed.

Beal is real deal. Okafor and Nene in the front court are playing real, real solid. Especially Nene.

Now if Jordan Crawford can just regain his rhythm, we'd be real straight. I'd hate to think that he can only ball out on a sorry team when he's the offensive focus. B.W.(Before Wall) he was really carrying the team, playing maturely and had curbed his gunner tendencies to a degree. I was actually impressed with his play.

I just hope the recent DNP's are him being in Wittman's doghouse. Especially when Wittman is having trouble with his rotations anyway.

Anyhoo, right now everyone knows they are a team to watch out for now. Still a star or two away from contending for anything though....

Nothing really much to hate about Jarvis Hayes outside of him being a proclaimed shooter who can't shoot.

He wasn't significant enough for me to be like "I can't stand this guy"...Besides he was injury-prone. Nobody pays attention to injury-prone role players unless you are Etan Thomas...

In response to Reply # 131

There was a 5 min stretch to start the 4th Q where we didn't score and Det got the lead. We made stops but we couldn't score, which always happens when Wall is on the bench. It happens.

I'm not saying we played well, but considering everything, I was expecting the loss and not really upset by it. Overall we were "ok".

Only thing I really agree with is that Wall isn't/won't be an ELITE player.

And by ELITE, I mean one of the top 5 best players in the league that is untradeable.

He can be ELITE AT HIS POSITION easily.

I feel he can be great. At least as good as TP in terms of effectiveness and being a good point guard.

I think he's totally off base with the "he only plays at one speed" thing. He obviously hasn't watched a game this year, cause Wall is being way more patient.

He's half-right about the Ariza/Okafor trade, only because that trade is just now starting to pay off mid-season. But during that 5-28 stretch? Yeesh. But Brand is old and sucks now anyways.

Nene does worry me, only because even though he's putting up 20-10 type numbers, he stays hurt and ain't getting any younger. We really need to either draft/trade for/sign that one player that makes us a year in/year out playoff contender.

And yeah, Vesely can really go somewhere other than our roster. Dude really doesn't offer anything other than height.

i'm done with caron. he is a black hole and injury prone. even though ariza might opt out after the season, i prefer him. he can hit his 3s and play solid defense. plus, butler would automatically automatically starts at the 3, and i'd rather let ariza and webster compete for that starting spot.

http://nba.si.com/2013/02/26/washington-wizards-defense-emeka-okafor-nene-john-wall/

The Wizards are safely out of the Eastern Conference playoff race and thus squarely outside of the general basketball consciousness. But let’s pause for a moment to admire Washington’s season, which has been quite a bit more remarkable than their early struggles and underwhelming record would lead you to believe.

What sets the Wizards apart from the rest of the gloomy ranks of the lottery-bound is that they’re secretly elite — albeit on one side of the ball. While scoring continues to be a colossal problem for Washington (last in offensive efficiency by a large margin), Randy Wittman’s team currently ranks an impressive eighth overall in points allowed per possession after coming in at 24th by that same measure last season. That makes the Wiz the only top 10 defense that isn’t playoff-bound this year, and likely the first team since 2004 to miss out on the postseason with a defense this stingy. Washington isn’t just defending well for a certain stretch or getting stops with random hustle — they’re putting the clamps on the entire league, and have only gotten better since John Wall’s full-fledged return to the starting lineup 15 games ago.

Over those last 15 games, Washington has planted a flag as the second best defensive team in the league. Suffice to say that success doesn’t all hinge on Wall; the real epicenter of Washington’s highly functional defense is, unsurprisingly, its big men. Nene and Emeka Okafor have become a truly fantastic defensive tandem, capable of corralling ball handlers and protecting the rim as a joint operation. Nene can trap hard on a screen if need be, or help out to block shots on the backline. Okafor can take a perfect angle in defending the pick-and-roll, or step up to challenge a shot at the rim if the on-ball defense breaks down. Their combined defensive skill makes them virtually interchangeable, and thus incredibly valuable to a defense that gives its perimeter players a ton of help in controlling ball action on the perimeter.

That’s where Nene, in particular, thrives. He’s fantastic at prioritizing threats on the fly, and consistently freezes the opposing ball handler as he buys his teammate time to recover. This is possible and productive for two reasons: 1) With Okafor lying in wait, Nene has a longer window to recover than many bigs do in this scenario, and 2) Nene is still quick enough to recover on most shooting bigs in time, often leading to a contested two-point jumper — one of the best possible results of any defensive possession.

Okafor and Nene both deny access to the paint beautifully, but they also have help from a group of wing players with a good defensive understanding. In scenarios like the one described above — in which Nene lingers to defend the pick-and-roll, thus leaving Okafor to protect the basket — we might see some defenders on other teams abandon shooters in the corners in order to rotate to help in the paint. That is, in highly specific NBA jargon, a no-no; good defenses control the lane, but the best defenses do so without giving up other high-value shots.

The Wizards are fantastic at this. While Nene and Okafor alternate in their respective responsibilities, we see Washington’s wing defenders generally glued to their marks in the corners — excepting the occasional sag off of a low-percentage shooter that is deemed to be an acceptable risk. Even in situations where the defense has broken down, you can see the Wizards closing out in order of priority, often faking a close-out toward the non-corner shooter, only to close out hard on the real corner threat. You can see that particular maneuver here, though in this case the Wizards don’t recover in time to prevent a Terrence Ross three-pointer:

That single maneuver isn’t of any great consequence, but this kind of prioritization contributes to Washington’s process. Martell Webster and Trevor Ariza have done particularly good work in making smart reads at full speed, and tend to evaluate possessions well despite the demand for an instantaneous judgment and reaction. Further, when Washington does bring perimeter help, it does so off shooters closers to the top of the floor. In doing so, the Wizards give their opponents looks at longer, more difficult three-point shots and give themselves a greater number of possibilities for defensive recovery. This allows the Wizards to help consistently without leaving the corners exposed.

This isn’t to say that Washington’s defensive execution is flawless, as Wall in particular can get caught having strayed too far from a shooter hidden away in the corner. With his head turned completely to watch the ball, Wall sometimes inches toward the paint, flying against the tenets of the Wizards’ defense in the process:

Collapsing to the lane off of a weak-side shooter is about as basic as it gets from the standpoint of help defense, but contemporary NBA players are too smart to not exploit that kind of rotation and too good at getting the ball to unattended corner shooters.

But there’s enough structure and help to make the whole defensive enterprise work rather beautifully in spite of those little spots of trouble, which, if anything, is a testament to what Wittman has done with a frontline that may seem oversized by today’s NBA standards. Neither Okafor nor Nene is, on his own, a tried and true defensive anchor. Yet together they make for one of the best high-usage defensive duos in the NBA this season, and a perfect pair in terms of balancing the floor and equalizing for strategic risk.

The best way to put that defensive brilliance in context? Together, Okafor and Nene make every opponent score even more infrequently and inefficiently than the Wizards.

That stuff matters. moody is not a trait i want in the face of the franchise.

leonsis was wrong to put all that pressure on wall from day one. rondo didnt develop into a star with a bad team around him and pressure to be a savior. wall has to go through the same thing lebron did (with people wanting him to be jordan when that was never his game). wall is not irving, or rose, or whomever and shouldnt try to be.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wizards-insider/wp/2013/02/28/wizards-john-wall-remains-in-a-funk/

Beal said he would confident that Wall would dig himself out. “John’s fine. He has his highs and lows, but that’s just his passion and his competitiveness. I mean, I love that kid. He’s a great point guard. I don’t care what anybody says. He’s going to be fine regardless. He’s just got to keep holding his head up high and keep moving forward.”

Webster and Ariza can walk if they want, and okafor has to get traded. we have only three starting spots locked down for the next two years.

the flexibility means we can go after porter or noel in the draft, but its hard to say what this team will look like next year.

They should. He's a nice vocal vet presence. And his career has thrived in D.C.

10 out of 16 games against playoff teams. If they get over 30 wins this season ending, I will definitely commit to them possibly being a playoff team next year.

big difference between his play in march -which is max worthy - and his previous body of work.

if he finishes strong, like maybe he coulda been doing this all season... then give it to him.

...if i'm Ted Leonsis -- and clearly i'm not -- John Wall doesn't get a max contract. off numbers and influence alone, he hasn't earned it.

i'd give him a deal similar to Steph Curry's: 4 yrs/$44M with an early out after the 3rd year, or...3 yrs/$36M.

currently, the year the deal actually kicks in only has $24.2M in salary obligated. so a little less than half your cap is going to Nene and three other players on rookie deals (Beal, Vesley and Singleton). it just doesn't make sense to a player of John Wall's caliber 25% of your cap space ($14.1M plus). then you're forced to fill out your roster by bargain hunting...Ernie don't know how to do that.

this contract is HUGE for this franchise. six yrs of service or less a player can get up to 25% of cap space on a max deal. seven to nine...30%! which is about a $3M difference annually, but a extra $15M plus over the life of the deal if it's 5 yrs.

after his rookie year, John Wall will have 4 yrs. so here are the scenarios:

John Wall:
-go for the UBER max after rookie deal...5yrs/$86M*
-go for a SUPER max deal...4yrs/$65.4M w/a ETO after 3 yrs
-go for a max deal...3yrs/$46.6M

*assuming annual increases are 10%

none of these contracts are ideal for the Wizards...NONE! they're barely above a .500 club with him. sorry, but that's not max contract worthy.

the Wizards at minimum must start the extension at 125% of the final year of the deal ($7.45M to $9.33M). they could go the following routes:

-3yrs/$30.8M*
-4yrs/$43.3M w/a ETO after 3 yrs
-5yrs/$56.9M w/a ETO after 3 yrs

where talkin' about a difference of anywhere from $15M to $50M+ over the life of these proposals. if you're a GM lookin' at the long term well-being of this franchise, what would you do?

i'd be reasonable and give him 135% of the final year ($10.05M), then offer him 4yrs/$47.1M w/a ETO after 3yrs (year 3 pays $12.1M; year 4 pays $13.4M). he'd only be 26 yrs old by the end of year 3 and possibly entering the prime of his career.

if he BALLS OUT and gets some patches on his jacket (NBA MVP, NBA Finals MVP, NBA All-Star MVP or NBA All-Star appearance each season), i'd consider giving him a four year max deal between 25% or 30% of my cap following his 7th season. first year salary at 30% is $17.4M

but he gon' have to earn it. 4yrs/$47.1 w/a ETO after 3 yrs is a reasonable offer. nobody's giving John Wall max money...NOBODY. he hasn't earned it.

IF we can keep him and Beal together for the next few, get our bigs healthy and maybe get something slick in the draft in the form of a strong 3 or 4, we can be something.

In response to Reply # 174

It looks like the 7-10th picks are likely. In terms of bigs, that is Zeller/Len territory right now. Any thoughts on how either would fit in?

what about drafting the best player available (like Oladipo)? that doesnt seem to work as well in basketball, but no one ever looks back and says it was smart to draft a role player when an all star was sitting there in retrospect.
