Cavs coulda had Lamb, PJIII, Barton, and QMiller.
Jun 28th 2012

That's just as risky a draft though (well save for the Tyler trade)
Jun 28th 2012

They tried to recover by gettin Zeller, thinking "oh he fell...we gotta steal" and it would make them look good. This is a fuckin catastrophe. I WANT CUNNINGHAM AND HE GOING TO DALLAS?

AND YOU COULDA HAD LAMB AND PERRY, WHICH IS ALL I WANTED IN THE FIRST FUCKIN PLACE?

Just a straight choke job.

They clearly heard about the early "promise" Waiters had and bought the hype. The Zelliverance pick is fine at that spot... had that not given up three (!!!) picks to get him. Pathetic.

That's not a contingency. It's panicking. Didn't need Rob. Didn't wanna take Lamb or Ross so high because they weren't gettin cysed...scared of Drummond.

THEY FUCKIN PANICKED. it's one off the worst draft I've ever seen from a team in position to help themselves so much. I let Tristan over Klay slide because I fucked with TT and I believe he'll be a solid double double guy.

But this shit? No. It's so bad.

This is easily a 26 win team on paper. What in the shit was Chris thinking? I need a spycam video of the Cavs draft room.

This is some bullshit.

>I'm as mad as Doc probably is.

this was the most important draft in almost 10 years
and they blew it all for a 6th man and a center.

neither of which rated high. no contingency plan for Beal or MKG.

no one could be as mad as me right now.

fuck the NBA Finals this year, this was what I was waiting for, and it's a total disappointment.

unlike last year, there is no celebration to be had at all.

for one dude, when you could have had at least 3 quality players (INCLUDING A BADLY NEEDED SMALL FORWARD) in your hands to make up for the "WTF" pick.

this team is lottery bound again. Kyrie won't even get to see the playoffs before he runs off to some faggot-assed 1% team. this is disgusting, man.

It's like watching your brother get out of a bad relationship only to turn around and wife up the first dumpy ass broad who he saw. Grant spent the last whole month convincing himself, outsmarting himself, undermining the whole franchise by hoping that he could flip it.

Someone shoulda told this dude to get his head out of his ass, take a fucking smoke and do the move that needed to be done. Shit, the one of THREE moves that he had there.

Instead he just fucking stuck it out on something that is creating no buzz, no confidence in the fan base, no confidence in their centerpiece player, no groundwork of hype to repair the franchise's image with potential future free agents or fans of ball in general.

With Gilbert goin' Comic Sans, folks viewed the franchise as a bunch of assholes. And that probably would've been fine. Winning woulda solved that. The killer thing is to be viewed as assholes *and* stupid.

This draft made the Cavs look fucking damn near incompetent. And that ain't worthy of a single man's respect.

that's the best player the franchise will ever have & he spent seven years there while they assembled garbage around him.

Nothing that happened tonight was going to lead them to some level of basketball better than the era they had when Lebron was there because that is by far the best that team has been in franchise history.

Kyrie's a nice player they got from Donald Sterling being a worse owner than the dickhead Loan Shark but he's not a generational talent like that.

They had one of those & they blew it, sorta like the Sixers with Iverson but way worse since Lebron was/is a much better player whose playing style fits with just about anybody you want to put around him as long as they're actually talented.

funny thing is I really have always casually rooted for Cleveland teams to win but there's no sugarcoating this shit & I'm not gonna pretend they didn't completely fuck up having one of the best players to ever live on their team for two contract lengths.

whatever they want.

I take no pleasure in their failures after the bottom fell out & Bron beasted on them in his return game plus now has a ring.

They can be 'competitive' the same way the sorry-ass Sixers are from here on out if they want to do so.

You guys & Bags can have them, makes me no nevermind.

I don't even know if this draft was the disaster y'all are making it out to be really, Zeller can be a serviceable starting center & who knows maybe Waiters will be good (fuck it, he's a Philly/South Jersey kid, I wish him luck).

In response to Reply # 10

Giving up both 2nd round picks was dumb but Lamb at 4 was as risky as Waiters. They should have done what Sacramento did and have a trade in place in case someone didn't fall (Kings reportedly had a deal to Houston to TRob didn't fall.)

I thought Barnes was the no brainer but if they didn't like him, they needed some sort of backup deal, which could have been possible since other teams wanted Waiters.

I think Grant just liked Waiters. The real panic move was giving up so much for Zeller, who is probably a backup center.

Like, I was semi-mad at Waiters, but I understood the risk. You don't want the safe, lower ceiling guys, you went for it. I get it. Still prefer Lamb, but whatever.

But trading three picks for Zeller is inexcusable.

I mean, I can understand that Zeller doesn't seem worth 3 picks. But they got the player they wanted, don't have to pay 3 scrubs salaries for the next 3 years which saves them money to make a run at a free agent.

Obviously it all depends on what you think of Zeller, but if they were high on him, it makes sense.

I'd rather have had two Lamb/T-Jones/P-Jones/Ross combo if they were only going for 2

I get the "conserve your money" deal. I just don't know who the hell they think is gonna be acquired in free agency though, that's a great fit and available. Gilbert put a curse on us with that (since turdburglars can't SHUT THE FUCK UP AND IGNORE that gay-ass letter), and in general, people got a flaming bat of ignorance firmly up their asses when it comes to playing in this city for "city" purposes.

NOPE. I'm not hearing that shit when OKC, San Antonio, and Phoenix all built formidable teams that way. Toronto is a vastly superior city in all the superficial metrics of "city" to most if not all American cities, including America's Big 3, yet... no one wants to play there, apparently on some "city" shit. NOPE. Go and find a better reason.

but eh. we needed a center. and 7 footers that don't completely suck are rare. Waiters is the one that seemed like a panic/sice pick IMO. I'm not even mad at that pick except for the fact that I can't figure out their mindset. I mean, a "James Harden" in an OKC Copy situation, cool... but at #4?

Terrence Jones coming off the bench

and maybe cracking the starting lineup by season's end

ET
Jrue
Iggy
Dildo
Hawes

with Thad
LA
Vuc
Meeks
and Terrence Jones on the bench

WHAT

I admittedly don't know shit about the dude they drafted

mostly because he went to St John's

and I'd be more than happy if they turned out to be right

but right now

this looks like a huge L

Obviously people in the know feel a certain way about this kid's play and/or his knee.

I would have taken Terrence Jones at 15 but whatever, obviously they're not in 'win now' mode nor should they be so maybe they see something in this kid the way they did Jrue.

I think trading a mid-second & a future first for a late first might have been the crazier move.

Either way, I'm not gonna pretend I watched St Johns or Mississippi State much this year so who knows but the second part while giving at least a glimmer of hope of getting a frontcourt player may end up coming at a hell of a price.

It's the Sixers.

Every year they do something to make me feel lethargic about their 'plan', I don't know why I thought this would be any different.

if not now, when

when you look at the eastern conference

yeah, last year's playoff run might have been more about DRose's injury

but

I don't expect CHI to contend this year

it will probably take a season or two for him to fully recover

not to mention their other issues

BOS is old and most likely going to lose a couple of their FAs

ORL has D12 and who?

NYK, ha

IND is decent, but we can play with them

what I'm saying is

if you're not in win now mode this year

when would you be in win now mode

losing LouWillz and signing #15 probably saves you money

which you could use to resign Hawes

our current roster

with the injection of energy that Terrence Jones would provide

looked to be an improvement to me

but now you pick a guy that looks like another Iggy

so we're starting over?

it doesn't make sense to me

which it did this year, then they might earn the right to get bodied by Miami in a conference final.

So what.

This roster has no shot of winning anything of significance.

If they're not gonna make some move that somehow yields them Dwight Howard, then it's hard to imagine they're going anywhere but the same purgatory they've been in since around 2005.

I don't know what to tell you, this team is stuck & shiftless, I'm not gonna pretend anything we did with the 15th overall pick in this draft was gonna somehow make us a title contender.

in the Eastern Conference

there's MIA

and then there's everybody else

out of everybody else

I thought IND was getting close to be a contender

and the other teams look to be declining

and I thought our fanbase was re-energized by our team's success this year

there is no guarantee that the MIA team automatically makes the ECF

we had a chance to improve our roster as constructed

and go deeper in the playoffs next year

what you're saying is

since we can't beat MIA

we might as well revamp the roster

starting with a guy that's already being tagged Iggy lite

?

yes, we could have caught an old, hobbled boston team in a vulnerable spot the way we caught an intermediate aged, severely hobbled chicago team. who the fuck cares?

what team have you ever seen with no significant size and no significant shooting that ever won anything?

even if the sixers got the #1 pick for a sack full of butt plugs, they wouldn't have won the east next year.

and I saw one that said Nicholson

so when they pick this dude it was truly a WTF moment for me

they were able to eventually get Moultrie, but

the fact that they had to move future picks to get a dude they were suppose to get anyway

only compounds the L for me

as a 6ers fan

my interest was renewed this year

this pick doesn't make alot of sense with #15

from what I'm reading he's Iggy lite

and the numbers are something like

45% FG and 20% 3-Pt

Moultrie is an athletic big man that eats glass and provides energy. Nice pickup there, although I hope the future first is conditional or protected or something. Whatever, as far as personnel goes, I like the addition.

The European kid fails the name test, big time, but he has a nickname that sounds cool so that may save him there. In all seriousness, I have obviously not seen some tall, lanky slasher playing junior high gyms in forgotten parts of the former USSR. He sounds interesting though, an oversized three who can handle the ball and get to the rim, I guess. Bothers me that he is not a good shooter by most reports, but maybe he'll get better. We'll see him in three years if ever, want to you want at No. 54? Some people seem high on his upside.

The kid from SJU is a decent player, he fits the way Philly plays. The thing there is that there were obviously players that better fit Philly's needs, outside of the one really talented big and the one really big big in this draft, they had their choices. Then again, if Iggy gets moved, it opens up a hole for this guy and increased minutes for Thad Young. I will wait and see before I get overly disappointed.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

time to see what they do in trade/fa season, be very curious because they are at impasses with two guys for sure and really more like four.

Seen him listed at 6'9" up until the draft, 6'8" more recently, such as:

http://www.nba.com/draft/2012/prospects/terrence-jones/

>he's a 4

A 4 that is routinely compared to Marvin Williams, Thad Young, less talent Derrick Williams, etc. He is NOT A TRUE FOUR.

>and that's all he would have had to do for a year or two
>

Harkless and Moultrie both fit that role, dude. And, actually, what we NEED are a starting four and a starting five. Why are you talking like those things are in place?

>get boards, D up, and finish around the cup

Uh huh, like Moultrie did to the tune of 10.5 boards per night. Harkless's rebounding numbers are a freshman were noticeably higher than Jones' as a sophomore and as good as the year before when he hit the boards a little harder.

>with Lou gone
>
>imagine Thad and Terrence Jones coming in off the bench

What does Lou have to do with it? Lou's departure means Jrue and Turner need to step it up big time in terms of creating offense and playing consistently.

If you were pushing PJ III, maybe I'd be with you, but to me if they drafted both Jones' or they drafted the two guys they drafted, they get the same two players. I don't know who the most talented pairing long term is but as far as fit goes, I think they got the better two.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

harkless is 6-7, wingspan of 7"
jones is 6-8, wingspan of 7-2

harkless might still be growing, since he's just turned 19.

we don't know how this is going to shake out. there's really no way iggy, turner, thad and harkless are all going to be on the roster, so criticizing the pick now is pointless. seems they either drafted harkless for someone else or iggy is on the move. i kinda like harkless, even though he's obviously not at a position of need.

Moultrie coulda been a decent mid-1st pick and fell into their lap, and Harkless is while admittedly a project a really nice 19-year-old talent. Thought both picks were great. Not home runs, but high potential with the first pick and excellent value with the second.

acting a bunch of 2nd rounders are even going to make a NBA roster.

Dallas probably would have been better off keeping Zeller.

Besides, it's not about who Dallas took. It's about who Cleveland could've had. Namely, Perry Jones, Quincy Miller, Will Barton. Or Arnett Moultrie. All have more star potential than Zeller.

Crowder and James early second.

Players from 2011 selected in similar slots. Kenneth Faried, Marshon Brooks, Chandler Parsons. (gonna take a stab in the dark and say you never saw those guys play in college either).

But yea, great call.

Look at the last 5 drafts. I'd bet 80% of the top 35 picks are in the L.

Edit: Fuck it, I'm bored.

’07 20-35 includes Jason Smith, Daquan Cook, Jared Dudley, Wilson Chandler, Rudy Fernandez, Aaron Brooks, Aaron Afflalo, Glen Davis

'08 Ryan Anderson, Courtney Lee, Kousta Koufos, Serge Ibaka, Nicholas Batum, George Hill, Darell Arthur, Donte Greene, Nikola Pecovic, Mario Chalmers, Deandre Jordan.

'09 Darren Collison, Omar Casspi, BJ Mullens, Roddy Beaubouis, Taj Gibson and AFTER 35 was Jonas Jerebko, Dejaun Blair, Jodie Meeks, Marcus Thornton, Chase Budinger and Danny Green.

'10 Trever Booker, Quincy Pondexter, Jordan Crawford, Grievis Vasquez.

I already mentioned last years.

Define "most" again?

that are impact players on playoff teams, the rest are just a bunch of names who will eventually end up in the d-league are overseas. 2008 was kind of and outlier and I made a post about it before:
http://board.okayplayer.com/okp.php?az=show_topic&forum=8&topic_id=1985029&mesg_id=1985029&listing_type=search
But in most years only like 1 or 2 guys if that from that range ever amount to anything.

You can continue to spin it how you want and produce strawman arguments, the bottom line is those players Dallas ended up with in those picks probably won't amount to shit, especially the two 2nd rounders and the Mavs didn't pull off any major "win" by flipping Zeller for them, they probably would have been better off keeping him, he'll probably have more impact than any of those other dudes.

by nabbing 3 second rounders(I know Cunningham was picked in the first round but he was projected as a second rounder), none of those guys are going to help elevate the Mavs back to championship contender status.

Cunningham is the only one that even has a shot at making the roster, James is a feel good publicity story for San Antonio's significant Air Force population, Crowder is 6-5 power forward.

Conversely, Zeller probably would have been a solid backup for Haywood.

Cunningham didn't even get to play because their roster is crowded at his position this year. We won't know what he can do til either Vince or Mayo are gone.

Even if you did want to base it on this year alone, Crowder and James both had comparable PER to Zeller, they just played fewer minutes due to roster depth.

Just a really odd thing to up, IMO.

I can't justify Kris Joseph. Dude didn't really step up like he was supposed to to lead that team. but that's a second rounder. I do think Hollis Thompson would have been a great fit there (heir apparent to Ray Allen as spot-up shooter with occasional drives. Good effort rebounder. grrr).

Anyway, I like the Sullinger pick. I know his defense gets panned, but so did Brandon Bass'. I believe the coaching staff/KG get after people enough to make them give effort on defense. He's an offensively *FAR* better big baby who means KG can stay at 5 (he should) but not have to control the boards alone. I like the potential fit and having a real low post based scorer can only help open things up for the rest of the squad. We can argue about PJ3 vs. Sully and that's valid, but getting one of them was a win.

Fab Melo...if he's really just a little dumb + english is his second language, then whatever @ the academic problems. That's easy to resolve. He's a big body and he'll be a spot player a la Stiemsma except a more lively athlete and could be a less tough/more athletic Kendrick Perkins type of guy who gives very little offensively but contributes a ton defensively. He is pretty decent at finishing when left wide open. So there's hope.

I like going for big guys. I like that they're not redundant. I do think there's a gaping how at backup SG, but maybe they believe in Moore?

That "not stepping up and leading" shit is BS....team went 34-3 and made the elite 8, and being so balanced was one of their strengths. If "step up" means dominate the ball and chuck too much to put up bigger numbers, the team definitely didn't need that, and he was smart enough not to do that.

But I would be pleasantly surprised if he sticks in the NBA. He was a kid who was decent to good at a lot of things on the college level, and was a good overall player but I'm not sure he has that one great skill to help him stick in the league. Then again, I thought the same thing about someone like Danny Green(didn't know he could shoot the 3 as well as he did last year), so you never know.

i mean, it's your senior year and all his numbers stagnated, he didn't really add anything to his game, and he never took over and won a game, stepped up and rebounded more when melo was out, etc. he was who he was. which is not really an nba player.

he was supposed to be the threat for the team and was a preseason all big east first teamer. maybe everyone was wrong about what he was, but i just saw a guy who was a cog in a team. that's not an nba player.

Not stars but gives em inside depth to the point of not needing to give Kwame 7.5 mil for a year and shit like that. Not at all sold on Barnes though. Like doesn't he project as exactly the same player as Dorell Wright?

I'm slightly more optimistic than you on Barnes because I think his mid-range game makes him a slight improvement over Dorell right off the bat and I think he has a little bit of upside. The key for Barnes is going to be his mindset, if he comes in and accepts that he isn't going to be one of the top options on offense and works to make an impact as a perimeter defender and gets his points within the offense it will be a good pick. If he thinks he's here to gun with Klay and Curry and puts his energy into trying to get his points every time he touches the ball then we have a problem.

Definitely agree about Ezeli and Green. Both guys are limited enough that I doubt either will ever be a starter but these guys bring toughness, rebounding, and interior defense. They'll work their way into the rotation early because the Warriors are traditionally one of the softest teams in the league. These guys plus a (hopefully) healthy Bogut will go a long way towards addressing that.

recall watching any of them other dudes play. I was wondering bout this while watching broussard and gundy discuss who can help what team. How much did those dudes watch the college cats play?

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

too much investment on either side of that spectrum.

For example I've hated every Villanova player ever aside from Kyle Lowry (who really plays more like a St Joe or Temple kid).

Luckily for me they all have pretty much sucked but it just kinda worked out that way.

me and matinho took some huge Ls on him as a draft prospect.

i think i've seen the Conn guys question waiters and/or like him.

i like to think--other than when they go to boston--i can switch to evaluating talent. the reason i've hated on most 'cuse prospects is most of them turn out to be busts. waiters is the only one so far where i'm not super confident in my prediction.

i could see him be a scoring version of jeff green in that he's a good contributor to a team, but people are mad @ him because he's not a "top 5 worthy" contributor. not that they're alike in any way, just that the overall narrative might be the same.

i'll still call it a bust tho

It's up at www.soulhonky.com but it's a lot so you might want to just check for your team.

I gave my Celtics a D+ for our draft, Sixers and Cavs were other losers, even though I like the talent that Philly drafted.

Chicago, Charlotte, Pistons, OKC, Portland, and Golden State were other winners.

As an Orlando fan, I thought our draft was alright. A couple overacheivers from small schools. Haven't seen Nicholson play before, much more familiar with Q. Miller, but I guess he was considered a reach at 19. We'll see.

Still scratching my head about that Cavs trade.
