So, they can go over the cap to sign them & not be taxed but realistically they can only afford to bring only one of them back.

In response to Reply # 6

He's only 27 himself and has been on nothing but winning teams for the last 5 years. Granted he will be making $9 million in the 14-15 season but come on, competent big man have always been over paid. Shit Zaza Pachulia will make over $5 mil next year, 34 year old hasn't been healthy since 2008 Jermaine O'neal made over $6 mil this year.

If the time comes in the next 2 years where the Thunder have to get rid of Perkins there will be a market for him. It might not be a great player/pick but they won't have to pay him to not play for them.

This isn't a video game. Most teams are at or over the salary cap. If they trade Perk out they will almost certainly have to take on the same amount in salary, making a trade pretty much pointless.

Why would a rebuilding team (the only ones with cap space to absorb it) take on that awful contract?

Its amnesty or nothing on Perkins.

But Centers that are can count to twelve and are coordinated are always overpaid. Another example, Dallas has Brendon Haywood locked up for almost $10 million in the 2012-2015 season. http://hoopshype.com/salaries/dallas.htm That's after fresh off getting out from under Dampier's bloated contract.

I'm not arguing that by trading Perkins they will be able to keep both Ibaka and Harden. But I am saying when and if they get rid of Perkins it won't be with the amnesty clause, unless he gets hurt again.

Harden and Ibaka are 22, I forget Perk is only like 27, he seems way older....

Even if they lose one of the top 4 they still might have the West on lock for a while...

If OKC matches it they will be well into the luxury tax for the next 5 seasons on, and have very little to work with to fill out the roster ala the Heat. In the OKC market I doubt that is sustainable, but maybe Bennett doesn't give a shit and will spend the $100+ million.

In any case, Ibaka will almost certainly be gone if they match.

The more palatable financial scenario is resigning Ibaka ($8-10 mil) and letting Harden walk.

Tough break but that's the reality of drafting 3 max quality players plus a top shelf big man in successive years. Oh and signing Perk to that joke of an extension.

A young team desperate for a star 2 guard and with cap space (Washington, Charlotte, etc) will happily offer him the max next summer.

There aren't many 2 guards better than him really, when you think about it.

So yeah, he is a max player as defined by the 2 guard market.

or more. It's stupid. (Although the Love contract fell into Kahn's lap and then he turned down another year at that lower rate.)

Shooting guard is actually weak right now in the NBA so a lot of teams will be vying for his services. He'll get a big offer. Maybe not max but more than the Thunder can afford to stay under the lux tax.

You bother looking that up or just pulling shit outta thin air?

And Westbrook got a max extension after the new CBA as well. Teams are still offering them, particularly bad teams in need of talent.

You don't think Charlotte would roll the dice on Harden? Why wouldn't they?

Harden will be on that max level next year, after performing like he has. Just because you don't see it doesn't mean league GM's on bad teams won't offer it. His stock has risen as high as anyone's over the past 2 years. There are GM's drooling over him.

He will get a max offer easily.

he's great in his role on the Thunder but can he really be the main guy and carry a team night in and night out? At the end of the day I think he's more of a Robin than a Batman.

He plays in their shadows, and his playmaking is stunted by Russy's ball mongering.

When he runs the 2nd unit though, you can see just how good he is as a point forward.

Max level? Maybe...but worth the risk to a bad team.

Oh...and the best Robin's still get max money. (Westbrook, Gasol, etc)

he's not as good as guys like durant or d-rose, but they always get matched in restricted free agency. so you're paying not only for harden's value, but also for the rare opportunity to get a really promising young player. there is no chance OKC lets him go, though.

Harden is more like a 2nd option on a championship caliber team but he hasn't shown us much to be considered the top dog. Same goes for Russy. Actually, they have the Spurs blue print:

KD:Elmo
Russy:Top 5
Harder:Manu
Thabo:Bowen
Ibaka:Admiral/Horry

fans were/are still calling Spurs players. That's irrational and immature mad posting. Funny how you choose to call this hating when it's actually a pretty hot topic that I heard discussed on sports radio today. It will be intriguing to see what the Thunder will do with their young group of stars.

Thabo has a role, and he play it well, it is to lock up the best perimeter player on the other team & to hit corner 3s. That's it. That's why he's making $3 million a year on his 2nd contract while we are debating if Harden gets the max on his 2nd contract.

OKC's plan is for their draft pick from last year, Reggie Jackson, to fill Harden's role. But when he was forced to play when Maynor tore his ACL he proved he wasn't ready yet. He better be shooting in the gym this summer if OKC's plan is going to work out.

Pardon me

It would take Thabo three games to score like Harden does in one. They are absolutely nothing alike. Thabo plays defense. That's it. Harden scores....a lot.

a game?

His development as a defensive force inside is what elevated them from a nice team to contender status. Dudes like that don't grow on trees, that's why everybody is nutting their pants for Anthony Davis.

You might not be able to replace Harden's offense with one guy, but you got to figure at 23, 23, and 22 KD, Russy and Ibaka are all going to continue to develop offensively.

the qualify offer isn't until 2013-14. at worst, harden and/or ibaka will be on OKC until at least half way through next season, and i don't see OKC trading either of them when they can wait until after next season and make a qualifying offer.

as long as they keep KD and Russy, who haven't even peaked themselves, surrounded by quality role players, OKC will be a force in the West for a while

Besides KD/Perk, their core is compromised of players that are still on their rookie contracts. Now they have to either pay-up and keep the core intact or let one go. Since the new CBA's caps/luxury tax is a bitch, it looks like the latter is going to be the reality for a team playing in a small markets like OKC. They go the drafting part right but we'll see what the owners are made of when they have to reach deep into their pockets.

It's up to the ownership to either pay-up or wave bye-bye. Based on the sentiments of the owners during this past off-season, we all know where this is going.

and not a bad option for OKC.

If I had to choose between Harden and Ibaka, I'm taking Ibaka, given the fact they have the leading scorer and best closer in the game already in KD.

Trade Harden and grab Bradley Beal to take his place as 6th man.

Portland was offering the 6 and 11 for the #2 so I'd try to make it a three team deal: #2 to Portland, Harden to Charlotte, #6 and #11 to Thunder. They get two cost controlled guys who could be as good as the guy at #2.

They could roll the dice on Drummond at #2 and grab a replacement 2 guard in Ross. Or grab the 2 guard at 6 and get the steadier Zeller or less risky than Drummond Meyers Leonard at 11.

isn't that the kind of dumb decision that caused this lock out season
where the owners attempted to insert hardline measures to govern themselves from doing dumb shit like....signing james harden to a max contract
lol @ harden getting 30% of a teams budget
he's a good player and all. great scorer
but how many double teams does he face on a nightly basis?
and he's such a defensive liability it's not funny
ppl gush over that small lineup the thunder run because it can score in bunches
ignoring the fact they run durant at the 4 for long stretches because they're terrified of taking thabo off the floor when harden is in for a long time
i haven't heard the media talking bout this so maybe it's some okshit
but what would be dumber under this new CBA?
SG market is weak so u never know i guess

edit: max contract for harden would start round 14/15 and gradually move up to 20. not as bad i guess. still wouldn't do it tho

Just like true centers, there is a serious shortage of top shelf 2 guards right now. There is a premium, and Harden is a hot commodity.

Plus Harden's playmaking skills give him a value bump too.

The new CBA isn't about NOT giving players max deals, its about leveling the playing field. Which means a team like OKC will have a hard time keeping this squad together. If you want to give players max deals that's your choice. The penalties for mistakes are just amplified.

Tell that to a team desperate for talent though. Why wouldn't Charlotte or Washington take a chance on Harden on a max deal? What do they have to lose?

the difference is a good center can improve your entire team on both sides of the ball, a sg generally doesn't have the same impact unless its somebody like a Kobe or Wade and even then its debatable.

In response to Reply # 76

A top shelf 2 guard has been a key component to most championship teams over the past 20 years. They can transform a team because of how much they control the ball and how reliant most teams are on that position to produce.

Simple basketball reality here.

Past 5 NBA champs and their main 2 guard:

Mavs - Jet Terry
Lakers - Kobe
Celtics - Ray Ray
Spurs - Manu
Heat - Wade

All guys who made over $10 mil a year, 3 were max players.

Is Harden worth the max? Don't know, but some team will still offer it. Franchises go decades without having a 2 guard as good as him (the Hornets, for example).

Either way Harden is far better than you are giving him credit for. If you can't see his enormous talent then arguing with you about this is pointless.

he was the 2nd option, he had another guy on his team that was pretty good too and still you see how well they fared this year without their center

Harden is absolutely as valuable as they are.

I named the past 5 champs, all had top shelf 2 guards. Doesn't matter if they were 1st or 2nd options, they were paid top dollar and were critical to a chip.

Harden is going to be a top 10 SG coming off of his rookie contract.

Therefore, he is worth a big ass contract in this market.

Nothing you said contradicts that whatsoever.

anything less and you're letting the market dictate how you run your team
that's how you get stuck with boozer type contracts
i think even bad teams need to be careful with stuff like this
what can they lose?
iono...maybe the next decade
harden is the type of player that's good enough to get a bad team enough wins to flirt with the 7th or 8th seed every year
but not good enough to build a championship caliber team around
positives outweigh negatives
but it's too hard to gauge the impact that being on a good team has had on his career for me
it's the whole 'what if kobe had went to Charlotte' thing

as far as the big vs small argument u and truth are having....
i think basketball revolves around the post from a fundamental perspective. post play is the foundation the game was developed on
so all things being equal i'd always take the big
harden is better than nene and marc gasol....but is he better than ibeka?
depends on what u value. the fact ibeka has developed a mid range game this year is enough for me to ride with him. i think we can kind of project hardens ceiling.
ibeka? who knows. imagine if dude starts hitting that 15 footer at will AND develops full on post moves

not saying he deserves a max contract, but if i had to choose between the two.....

Quite the opposite. He is absolutely a piece to build around, as has been proven by the past 3 decades of champions. Comparing him to Boozer is lazy dude.

Rudy Gay would be a better one to go with. Wing player coming off rookie deal, throw the max and cap your team out. The difference is that Harden is worlds better than Gay.

It is undeniably harder to find a top shelf 2 guard like Harden, than a quality, average sized PF like Ibaka. He is a talented shot blocker, but Harden is DYNAMIC. He literally carries the Thunder for stretches (Game 2 anyone?), and can do so many things for a team.

This argument to me is boiling down to you guys underrating James Harden. He was the 6th man of the year, despite playing tons of his minutes with the 2nd unit (Daquan Cook! Nazr Mohammad!). I'm not gonna play the "you don't watch games" card, but if you guys can't see how good this guy is....

I dunno man. He is legit as fuck.

The reason there was a lockout was because owners were trying to put in safeguards because they KNOW that they can't stop themselves from overpaying people.

The Players gave up a little bit in the lockout but they left the door open for the owners to shoot themselves in the foot.

And I'll guarantee that Harden's max contract won't even be a top 5 worst contract this offseason.

86. "8 mill was actually reasonable for both "
In response to Reply # 84

It's the length of the contract that actually kills teams & that was addressed w/ the new bargain agreement (max. 5 yrs). With that said how much better is Harden compared to Marcus Thornton? .....maybe he's a better play-maker. Thus, 10 mill is reasonable for Harden (ala Ben Gordon) but not the max. With that said, of all the organizations you could think of the Spurs handed Air Gay 10mill/4yrs just because there weren't any decent SFs in the market.

WHAT'S GOOD *****? What's REALLY good?!?!????!!! Ha HA!

supposed to be a more athletic Bruce Bowen with better offensive skills. He was piss-colored and everything, he was a perfect Spur.

Harden is worth giving max money to with Westbrook and Durant already getting paid.

You can keep Ibaka for cheaper and have solid tradeable contract. I'd be interested to see how Harden does as a starter without Russy though. Love his game.

exactly, its easy to look good coming off the bench against second-teamers, if some team signs him to a max deal expecting him to be the guy they might be seriously disappointed

Bismack Biyombo
Samuel Dalembert
Ekpe Udoh
Marcus Camby
Joel Anthony
Taj Gibson
Kevin Seraphin
Kris Humphries
Amir Johnson
Mbah a Moute
Kenyon Martin
Udonis Haslem

^^^ All players who could step in and give them more or less the same production as Ibaka, minus maybe 1-2 bpg.

Harden was second in the league in true shooting percentage (.660) and effective field goal percentage (.582). You simply will NOT find 10 other guards who could replace that production.

Just because he doesn't start doesn't mean he only plays against second and third units. He doesn't start games, but he finishes most of them, and plays more than anyone but KD and Westbrook.

He also lit up Miami's starters last game.
