Joe Flacco: 'I think I'm the best' QB

Updated: April 3, 2012, 9:51 PM ET
ESPN.com news services

Aaron Rodgers. Tom Brady. Eli and Peyton Manning. Drew Brees. Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco and his agent believe he's right there with the elite class of NFL quarterbacks.
Flacco's agent, Joe Linta, created a stir in February when he said Flacco should be considered a top-five quarterback based on wins and losses.
Flacco took it one step further Tuesday, telling WNST 1570 in Baltimore on Tuesday that he believes he's the "best" quarterback in the NFL.
"I assume everybody thinks they're a top-five quarterback," Flacco said when asked where he thinks he ranks among NFL quarterbacks. "I mean, I think I'm the best. I don't think I'm top five, I think I'm the best. I don't think I'd be very successful at my job if I didn't feel that way. I mean, c'mon? That's not really too tough of a question.
"That doesn't mean that things are going to work out that way. It just means that's the way it is -- that's the way I feel that it is and that's the way I feel it should be."
Brees, Rodgers and Eli Manning have won the last three Super Bowls, while Brady and Peyton Manning both own multiple NFL MVP awards.
Flacco's numbers dipped slightly in 2011, with his completion percentage, passing yards and touchdowns all taking a hit as he threw two more interceptions than he did in 2010. However, the Ravens were 12-4, won the AFC North and were a Lee Evans dropped pass away from representing the AFC in the Super Bowl against the New York Giants.
A first-round pick in 2008, Flacco has one year left on his rookie contract, but isn't concerned with what other quarterbacks make.
"It's not about the money. It's about what you feel you deserve," Flacco told WNST. "At the end of the day, they'll take care of it and I'll be waiting."
Still, Flacco said he wants to get a contract finished before the season starts.
"I hope that we both want to get something done before the beginning of the year because when the year comes and goes and I haven't been re-signed, then that's when things can start to get complicated," Flacco told WNST.
Pro Bowl running back Ray Rice, a restricted agent, was given the Ravens' franchise tag earlier in the offseason and has yet to work out a longterm deal with the team. Flacco hopes to avoid the same situation.
"You don't want to get to the point where you play out your contract and you get to those complicated situations where they can put the franchise tag on you and things like that," Flacco said. "I don't really want it to get to that point just because of that. If we do, it's not going to be a distraction. It's just going to be what it is."

It's a contract year for him and despite some erratic play at times, he's done well as the Ravens QB. Plus, Baltimore is still a run first team...his numbers won't be that high.

And he outplayed Brady in the AFCCG...

Streets won't let me chill.

I just don't care. I like my players to have ego. Although them backing up their ego with on-field play would help.

Yeah but Starbury never DID IT! He never won a chip and fell off to the point he is in China now. Flacco grabbed his nuts and made it happen in prime time and LED his team to a chip, beating HOF QB's along the way. He's got every right to tell the world: "FUCK YOU, PAY ME!!!!!!"

He's definitely a piece of the puzzle, but not the end all be all of our offense like the three you mentioned. He did back up his talk against Brady in January and got the Pittsburgh monkey off his back, but he needs to play well consistently to be taken seriously. He's got the weapons to do it....

Donovan Mcnabb in the first five or six years of his career. This is a stupid comparison.

Did you miss all those years where Donovan carried an offensive full of crappy receivers? Did you see what happened when he got a top-shelf receiving target in his prime?
Donovan made the Pro Bowl in his first 5 years as a starter.
Flacco has made none in his 1st four. Do you think Joe Flacco will ever even be considered for a league MVP trophy or even a Madden cover?
You obviously have an axe to grind but history doesn't support what you are saying. Yes there were people saying that McNabb choked in big games, but let's not forget that Peyton shared a similar reputation for the 1st half of his career. The bottom line is Donovan was a difference maker in his prime and was already regarded as one of the best QB's in the league in his first few seasons as a starter. Joe Flacco is a guy who stepped in to a good situation and has put up strong numbers but isn't remarkable in any shape or form.

That just shows you how dumb it is to look at an incomplete set of stats (I'd bet whatever you are looking at doesn't even display Donovan's rushing yardage) and try to make a profound statement based off of that.
If you didn't actually watch McNabb play all those years you really shouldn't bring his name up.

Flacco's got the always the victim card in his hand already

He will never be the leader of that team as long as Ray Ray, Reed, or Sizzle are there

He's good

better than most

but not, and probably never, elite

I did watch McNabb's entire career

He was a solid QB

and he managed to put a half a season of incredible play together

turned our franchise around

no doubt

what I'm sayin is

there is a ceiling

for both of these guys

if the Ravens win a chip with Flacco

it will be because of somebody else

which was the case for McNabb

as you alluded to him needing a HOF receiver to get to the SB

and what happened?

the way I remember it

Defenses were scheming on how to stop Westbrook first

would the reaction be different if McNabb had said the same thing

I'm as good as Brady and Manning

c'mon

Obviously anyone who watched the Eagles play all those years know you are full of it.
Even if you never watched a game of football in your life, to claim that a guy who went to the Pro Bowl in each of his 1st 5 full seasons is "a solid QB" "never elite" is just dumb. Move on, try to be profound about something else this whole comparison is a huge reach.

4th best behind guys like

Favre
Culpepper
Garcia
Warner

The one year he was voted the started

you still had Brady, Brees, and Manning on the other side of the ball

= still 4th best at best

I guess our definitions of elite differ

history being what it is

5 NFC championships

and he was never enough of a difference to win the big one

always the bridesmaid

MVPs

Rings

elite QBs got that

And you realize that they had the lead towards the end of the game in that SB...the defense choked that game away

You think these guys woke up every morning to go lift and practice, rise above many MORE talented athletes to get where they are to think they aint the best?

Even the cats that say they don't think they are are LYING to you.

I don't care if they've been cut 14 times and are a 4 year veteran cornerback.

They supposed to think they're the best.

ie, you feel you deserve as much money as other quarterbacks. so...it's about the money. after last season's "I don't get enough credit when we win" and whining about Tebow, he needs a PR coach.

The first I heard that you should always think you are the best (even if you know better) was high school and I've heard it from a ton of pros. Do you think guys like Sam Cassell and Gary Payton were better than Jordan? Obviously not. In their minds, they were.

Flacco is pretty clear on this point, I don't get what the hubub was about here.

Of course it's cool to see him finally get to the Super Bowl. I picked the Ravens a couple years in a row. This year I picked New England. Without fail I come up early on predictions.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

I suppose you could be humble and say something like "I consider myself one of the best in the league" but even then you sound not so sure of yourself.

You don't want to hear your QB say, "Well I think you have the Manning, Rodgers, Brady level, then I'm probably the level right under that"

In response to Reply # 50

or that he was pretty great in consecutive postseasons with a Lee Evans miscue keeping them out of the Super Bowl after he'd brought them back in the AFCCG last year.

Started every game & been in the playoffs every season he's been in the league.

Neither guy has really a year of great regular season numbers but one has been in the league for going on ten seasons.

I mean it's pretty easy to make an argument that Pretty Flacco is basically a bigger-armed, younger & possibly more consistent version of Eli with more upside moving forward.

I wouldn't have thought that'd be the case but here we are.

He's damn sure not better than Eli. We've seen what Eli looks like without Mihael Strahan, Tiki, Spags and Plax. We don't know how Joe performs without two hall of famers on defense. Plus Eli got two rings. Ben got two as well.

Having said that Joe did complete 78 percent of his passes and tie Jor Montana's record with 11 TDs... in three games. He outgunned Brady and Manning. He would've broken the record if the power didn't go out.

Real talk if the WORLD CHAMPION Ravens (for any of you persecution complex ass niggas) don't want to pay him then we will. Come to Arizona.
