"I see I gotta double down on y'all. Rivers = 2013 NBA ROY"

He ain't Kyrie, but neither is any other prospect of the last 8 years or so (yeah, I got at Rose, if that's how you gonna take it).

Work ethic too tough not to make good on natural talents. Kyrie is a basketball savant, Austin is on dat Pete Rose...or dat Clooney...or dat Emmitt. Or anyone who ain't the most preternaturally gifted, but loves what they do and works hard to excel at it.

'Rie is Jay Adams (without the tragedy)
Austin is Tony Alva

Steph: I was just fooling about

Kyrie: I wasn't.

Because I think Anthony Davis might struggle a bit on the mess that is the Bobcats roster. Right now I have Rivers landing in Cleveland which would be ideal IMO.

1. MKG: I would prolly even take him over Davis because I like Tristan more than Davis. Tristan is a hoss. kyrie need security/an enforcer and Tristan is it.

2. Terrance Ross. kyrie would make him look so much better than he is. All he gotta do is shoot the ball and finish oops and cuts. All-star. His J is legit.

3. Myers Leonard. Pick and Roll. Deadly.

4. Jeremy Lamb. Soft as hell. But super talented.

5. Gerald Henderson. Trade that first rounder. Jordan would do it. Get a good defender who can knock down 18-20 footers, 3s and finish above rim.

Got more. Just my top 5. They can steal Something in the 2nd too.

because PNR is going to be a major factor of the "going forward" game.

Lamb was another one on my list.

Why I wouldn't be mad @ Rivers (because the Cavs NEED a 2 like shit) I think it would damn near be a collision.

in any case, they're in a really good position this offseason.

He's one of those guys who could develop but I think he'll just end up being a run-of-the-mill 2 guard. With a lotto pick, I'd rather roll the dice on Perry Jones or Meyers Leonard (who I think is perfect for the Bucks; running pick-and-rolls with Monta and Brandon.)

I like Rivers as a potential running mate with Kyrie because I feel like defenses will never be able to tell where the point of attack will be.

If the Clips and C's lose some more in the second half, I think a swap of the Cavs lotto pick for the Clips/Celtics pick (the Celtics own both) would be a coup for the Cavs. They could add Terrence Ross and someone like Moe Harkless.

Because I'm not seeing him as being good enough to be the man like that. Also, given that it looks like he's going mid-first, he's probably going to have to fit into an already established offense.

He's gonna measure 6-5+ In shoes, shoot well, test well and interview well.

Told y'all months ago that this sudden downgrading of his skills was nothing more than a backlash to the hype Barnes got and people didn't wanna jump out there again and they totally overdid it.

He don't need to come back next year and drop 20ppg to prove what he can prove with some workouts against his competition.

Toronto is a mess. Honestly, I think he picks up a lot of bad habits if he ends up on the Raptors.

Sacramento has Big Cuz and 'Reke. I think they should move Tyreke but I don't think I'd replace him with Rivers. I think they're better off with a guy who'll help spread the ball around. Sacramento might be the worst place for him to land.

Utah's offense is probably going to run through the frontcourt. Rivers would likely play point there and I think they need a distributor more than a scoring point guard.

I don't see Detroit taking him. If MGK or Barnes are there, they'll take a SF; if not, I think they grab a PF to team with Monroe (or deal the pick for Josh Smith or another PF as I suggested in my mock.)

18. "I wouldn't mind Beal for Kyrie."
In response to Reply # 14

Beal won't ever be "the guy" for a team like Austin can, but Ky desperately needs dudes who can knock down open shots, which Beal can. It does make their backcourt pretty undersized though, which probably isn't ideal, and if drafting in the top ten, you probably want someone with more upside.

Ross is a good choice. Perry Jones scares me with his inconsistency, but I love the potential.

I wanna see what Moe Harkless does at workouts. Something tells me his stock will jump, and Ky could use a long wing like him, though I don't know that he'll jump to the top ten necessarily.

Cavs need another homerun(or 2) to place with Kyrie an the only knock that you got on Beal is that he's only an inch taller than 'rie? He's the prefect 2 to play with him in the Princeton offense.

Shooting guard is pretty weak right now and I'm not sure what guys in the right age range are available. I was also thinking the Cavs could trade down but because this draft is basically Davis and MGK and then pretty even from 3 - 20, I'm not sure who makes that deal.

In response to Reply # 7

not the message.

it was almost postmodern in how much it flip-flopped. It was written on an etch-a-sketch by Mitt Romney while windsurfing with John Kerry and proclaiming that it hates cheating, but is cool with Belichick and Sean Payton. It believes in both creationism and is also atheistic. It listens to Odd Future or whoever the kids like these days while wearing Karl Kani jeans with microchips in them. It has a flattop fade, but not out of an homage to the 80s or 90s, because it thinks styles from those eras are wack. It like Georgetown's basketball, but hates black coaches. ..

It's, like, bring something new to the table. The replies are so insanely predictable now.

Neil Simon dropped classics for three decades, but the last decade of his career was filled with a growing sense of desperation for relevance, clawing away to capture the magic of his previous successes by retreading familiar ground, which made him repetitive, predictable, and outdated.

That's how I feel on this subject.

I mean, I ain't got a dog in the race, but when you get players like Rivers, don't you expect more than a first round exit and then adios, Durham was cool for 6 months?

If I was a Duke fan under these circumstances, I would be completely indifferent to Rivers at this point and would care less what he does in the pros.

the comparison a year ago.

They're similar.

Both cocky.

Both throw pissy tantrums on the court.

Both practice relentlessly.

Both got that suburbs game.

Both feel entitled.

Both natural combo guards.

Both dribble a lot.

Right now Bayless got that bastard Calderon holding him back. That dude has been the cause for many young pgs not getting to shine.

Good luck with Austin getting a proper position. He can start for...for....well I don't know which team has a starting spot for him. But every team needs a George Hill type off the bench.

That Austin uppage got you mad like that?

You should duke that out with Truth.

I've moved on from Austin on some "Nothing to see here...Clear the area" shit.

I can claim a L on Greivis though. I'm liking him more and more I watch. Not sure how if you can go next level as a team with him. But he can play.

to the point where they need to slight Austin a bit. By the way, I don't like Duke and grew up a UNC fan so miss me with that side of the genda. But look a here:

Austin Rivers - "Standing 6-4 with a wiry frame that he's added some bulk to since his days at Winter Park High School, Rivers is a bit undersized for a NBA shooting guard, but compensates with a 6'7 wingspan."

Beal - "Standing somewhere between 6-4 and 6-5, Beal has decent size for a NBA shooting guard, to go along with a solid frame and average length."

Beal and Austin were both measured at 6'4 with Austin actually measuring a little taller the last time it was done in a controlled environment. He also has the longer wingspan. Why isnt Beal categorized as undersized when Rivers is? Not a big deal, but it seems that they (scouts) go out of their way to make excuses for Beal when they don't do the same for Rivers. Another is kinda just chalkin Beals' poor 3 pt shooting this yr to just some shit that happened. Granted, I think he'll be a better shooter than he's shown this yr, but Rivers had the better yr from the field and 3 and the scouts still harp on him not being a knock down shooter. Just sayin' seems weird.

That's what DX means by size, not just height. But still, DX is like everyone that covers the draft, they amp up the guys they like and kind of kneejerk downplay the comp.

Although they aren't as bad as David Thorpe who outright promotes the guys who train at his place.

Rivers can't do that. Beal's stock is rising and Rivers is hoping to impress in workouts with teams.

what's up with this kid?

alot of rookies struggle with the NBA 3 their 1st year, so I'll leave that alone

but he's losing minutes to Roger Mason Jr.

is he OK?

you send them to the D-League like Thabust and/or you use them as a piece to make a trade work.

They're only on the hook to pay Austin Rivers for two years & it's at 2 million or so which is pocket-change in NBA cap terms.

In response to Reply # 137

The numbers are ugly, but how he is getting them is actually encouraging. This is coming from watching games though, so I dunno if this is the right forum to be posting this.

I mean, he is definitely struggling with his transition to the pros, specifically when driving to the basket. He isn't getting as many calls as he did in college, and has been working on developing a better mid range floater to compensate. That shot is of course extremely difficult to develop, so his shooting percentages are suffering. But he gets into the lane with ease, and has proven to be a much better passer/playmaker than advertised.

Year 3 is the target for Rivers for any rational fan. This year and next I expect to see gradual improvement in the numbers as he adjusts his game. Any expectations of big numbers right away were never realistic, just as they aren't for most mid-1st round prospects.

In short, he has shown enough flashes and has legit NBA skills that when combined with his work ethic could very well translate into him becoming a very valuable player for us.

Fucking bizarro world here.

This post is a perfect example of how this board discusses hoops. Basa makes an ambitious claim about a Duke player, knowing it will provoke the usual suspects to then take the other extreme and let their rage cloud them over and call this kid an outright bust one month into his professional career. Bait is taken, and idiocy ensues. Meanwhile nobody comments on his actual play that they have SEEN.

I make a sensible, honest post about Rivers' play and development based on observation and I get ridiculed.

Comedy.

I generally try and stay away from too much agenda posting. Same shit happens with My Jeremy Lin posts. I post a recap of every game for the whole Rockets team and discuss strong and weak points, but ppl only wanna discuss teh agendas.

Part of the reason I like this board is because at its best there is A LOT of knowledge here and there can be some really good discussion (better than anywhere else Ive found on the internet). Over the last 3-4 years the agenda era has really kicked it. I think its fun for workday posting, doesnt require much thought, or watching, and helps the day pass.

With that said. Ive watched 3 full NO games this year, and 2 preseason games when they played the Rockets.Austin only played one of those.

Youre right he has a good first step and can beat his man, but then usually gets stuck not being able to do anything. He's always been a streaky rather than a good shooter and that hasnt changed. He's a better passer than advertised, but thats still not very good. Defensively, he doesnt do a great job of guarding guys 1 on 1, or reading picks. Part of the problem was he came in and had to start right away. A lot of those other guys Ba named (aside from beal) didnt get that opp/have to do that (its a gift and a curse).

The ultimate problem to me in my limited viewing is he's a tweener. Sure he can beat 2's consistently off the dribble but he cant do it at the one. Its not like he has the explosiveness of a guy like Monta. If he doesnt become a really good shooter his ceiling is limited. To me shooting is the key to his game wto work on this summer aside from the aforementioned midrange (not just shooting) but decision making. Going all the way to the hole, hitting the floater, pulling up, making the right pass. Going back to shooting if he can become a deadly spot up shooter that would help him tremendously.

Hey he has that "work ethnic," right? We'll see what happens this summer...

that was the knock on him entering the draft

that his game didn't look like it would carry over to the pros

which is also to say

taking him at 10 was one of the bigger WTF moments of that draft

not to get caught up in Ba's agenda

but this past draft was DEEP

I think alot of the critiques of him even entering the draft are now being validated

to say he's just now working on a mid range game

kind of emphasizes those critiques

he should have stayed in school at least another year

regardless

shooting <30% is a fuckin' problem

In response to Reply # 165

Starting Rivers in place of Gordon was temporary, and after a couple weeks it was clear that he was pressing (and like most rookies, at times lost). Also, Mason is a vet and his D is better than Rivers'. Monty loves that.

Mason is completely expendable, and will likely be the one losing most of his minutes when Gordon comes back. Rivers was drafted to be the 1st guard off the bench capable of playing the point and the 2. And so far he is showing that he can do both. And his draft position was maybe SLIGHTLY early, but he was clearly a consensus top 15 pick so I don't know wtf you are talking about on that point.

He is a very young, raw but very talented rookie. Of course his weaknesses in college are still his weaknesses a few months later. You mean he didn't solve all of his issues in a single summer? What a bum! His game is incomplete right now. At 20 years old that is NORMAL.

Lets give the kid a season or two before throwing dirt on him, shall we? If he doesn't improve I promise I'll be right there in line calling him out.

If by the third year you haven't progressed at ALL, I'm through waiting.

But there's no point in comparing the raw talent so early. The best can be cysed (Davis, Lillard, MKG, Singler), but it's a waiting game for most.

Austin Rivers: Worst season ever?
By Kevin Pelton
ESPN Insider

Austin Rivers is averaging 7.8 points and 2.7 assists per game.
Thanks to the Chris Paul trade, the New Orleans Hornets joined the Portland Trail Blazers as one of two teams with a pair of picks in the lottery of last June's NBA draft. After taking Kentucky forward Anthony Davis No. 1 overall, the Hornets were also able to add another top one-and-done prospect, Duke guard Austin Rivers, with the 10th pick.
While Davis and Rivers were once considered perhaps the top two prospects in the country coming out of high school, they have had very different professional debuts. When healthy, Davis has lived up to the hype he generated as a National Player of the Year and national champion during his lone college season; he leads all rookies in PER. By contrast, Rivers has struggled with the transition to the NBA, in several ways -- that includes making only 34.6 percent of his shot attempts inside the 3-point line.
In fact, Rivers is on track to make dubious history during his rookie campaign. Two months into the season, Rivers projects to rate nearly seven wins worse than a replacement-level player by my player metric, which would be the worst WARP score in the 34 seasons on record, starting with 1979-80, the first NBA season with the 3-point line.
WORST WARP SCORES

Player Season Team Win % MPG WARP
Austin Rivers (projected) 2012-13 NOH .271 28.2 -6.9
Jason Collins 2006-07 NJN .250 23.1 -6.5
Adam Morrison 2006-07 CHA .300 29.9 -5.8
Michael Curry 2001-02 DET .273 23.3 -5.7
Desmond Mason 2006-07 NOH .313 34.3 -5.7
Desmond Mason 2005-06 NOH .292 30.1 -5.6
Trenton Hassell 2002-03 CHI .288 24.4 -5.3
Calbert Cheaney 2002-03 UTA .309 29.0 -5.3
Charlie Scott 1979-80 DEN .287 27.0 -5.2
Juwan Howard 1999-00 WAS .333 35.5 -5.2
Dickey Simpkins 1999-00 CHI .268 23.9 -5.2
WARP stands for Wins Above Replacement Player, because normally it is measuring a player's positive impact. But in the case of Rivers, it is measuring a player's negative impact on his team's efforts.
Like its baseball cousins, the various types of "WAR" that figured so prominently in this year's AL MVP debate, WARP is a value statistic that includes two components -- per-minute performance (measured by player win percentage) and minutes played. For players who rate better than replacement, more minutes translate into more value. That relationship flips for ineffective players such as Rivers, who play worse than the type of player a team could invite to training camp or call up from the D-League.
So a "replacement player" is what, exactly? It's the type of player who is easy to find when a team needs a replacement. To find a good example, look no further than Hornets guard Brian Roberts, who went undrafted out of Dayton before starring overseas and signing with the Hornets after a successful stint in summer league. Roberts has been far more effective than Rivers as both a scorer and distributor while making the NBA's minimum salary.
Of course, to build a historically negative WARP rating, a player has to be on the court in the first place. Most of the leaderboard is made up of defensive specialists whose value is not reflected by their individual statistics. Collins, for example, is one of the players most underrated by advanced box score stats.
Beyond that, the list is filled out by players who were overexposed on terrible teams and rookies whose potential demanded playing time that their performance did not yet justify. Rivers qualifies on both counts. With Eric Gordon out of the lineup, the 5-22 Hornets have few good alternatives in the backcourt despite Roberts' surprising performance. Backup wing Xavier Henry has been nearly as ineffective. The situation will change when Gordon returns to action after being cleared to practice over the weekend.
Still, Monty Williams will surely find regular playing time for Rivers, who appears to be a major part of New Orleans' future by virtue of the high pick the team used to draft him. Williams indicated as much to the New Orleans Times-Picayune earlier this month, saying, "I'm going to play him through his mistakes and it's going to help our program two or three years from now."
Because this Hornets season is going nowhere, the more important question is what Rivers' slow start says about his long-term development. Despite the cautionary example of Adam Morrison (see chart), the only rookie currently in the WARP bottom 10, a poor first season isn't necessarily a death knell for a player's career. Allan Houston, Chris Kaman and Glen Rice all developed into All-Stars after rating at least three wins below replacement as rookies. And none of those players was anywhere near as young or inexperienced as Rivers at the time.
Still, the more common outcome is that even those ineffective rookies who go on to long careers tend to never rate well statistically. Jeff Green, who had -4.1 WARP during his first season with the Seattle SuperSonics, is a good example. As much as young players tend to improve, the shape of their performance usually doesn't change, and Rivers' volume shooting has always played better among scouts than by the numbers.
Furthermore, the troubling aspect of Rivers' play this season is that it can't really be called a fluke. In fact, his per-minute win percentage (.271) is nearly exactly what his translated college stat line indicated (.274). Frankly, there is no track record of Rivers playing an efficient brand of basketball against high-level competition. He was one of the least valuable NBA players during the preseason, and even shot just 4-of-19 from the field in two summer-league games before suffering an ankle injury.
Supporters will point to Rivers' shot selection as the culprit for his poor percentages, but Hoopdata.com shows that the larger issue has been his inability to finish at the rim, where Rivers is making just 42.9 percent of his attempts (the league average is 63.9 percent). Though this will improve as Rivers learns to navigate rangy NBA shot-blockers, finishing is typically a skill players bring with them to the league. Bradley Beal, another one-and-done guard who has struggled at times during his rookie season, is shooting 61.0 percent at the rim.
Moreover, Rivers has yet to show the kind of dynamic playmaking the Hornets hoped would allow him to transition to point guard in the NBA. His assist rate is only slightly better than average for a shooting guard, let alone a lead ball handler. If Rivers is unable to handle the point, it will be difficult for him to coexist with a healthy Gordon in the New Orleans backcourt.
At age 20, Rivers has plenty of time to develop a more efficient game, possibly focused around the best skill he has shown so far -- 36.7 percent shooting from beyond the arc. If he gets there, his eventual style of play will bear little resemblance to his ineffective brand of basketball thus far.

as i've said, there's never been evidence anywhere to indicate rivers will be a good pro. he wasn't good in college, he was terrible in the preseason and he's one of the worst players in the NBA so far. he's not a physical freak with untapped potential either -- he's always struck me as a very polished, maxed-out player. i don't want to see the kid fail, but his entire potential is based on fictional things like heart and willie winguyism.

NOLA fucked up, but it's not like a lot of guys drafted after rivers have been crushing it.

Austin was going to be a #1 overall pick when he was in high school.

FOH dude.

go build a time machine and tell us all how great d-will is and how slow kyrie is. tell us all how awful k-love is and how he not athletic enough. tell me again how slow harden is.

I think they were up 20, put him in for Greivis Island, lead cut to 10 in like 2 minutes, Greivis bac in for Rivers, banged 2 tre's and Hornets started rollin again... Rivers has potential to be a good player still, but it's probably not gonna happen this year, and it's really not even a good situation like it looked when he was drafted... Vasquez has a strangle hold on the PG position, EG is back and gunnin and Ryan Anderson takes all the second team shots

yeah, he still takes NyQuil IVs
but the Cavs could use a cheap, Quilly-ass dude on the wing for the bench

in retrospect, the Cavs SHOULD have taken Drummond. He would have been the enforcer.

Rivers ended up being the Dion Waiters of Duke. A real bamma, whose attitude exceeded whatever salvagable skill

Austin Rivers is expected to be trade to the Clippers to join his dad, coach Doc Rivers.
It's unclear what the Clippers would give up, but they could do it for Jordan Farmar straight up. Farmar has played much better than Rivers and he's also a better fit as a floor spacer. Neither will see much change in their fantasy value.

I guess now that he's the big boss everything is gravy & daddy gets to throw someone who earned their spot on the roster under the bus to make way for junior.

In response to Reply # 248

His numbers look OK but once you actually see him play you see what a huge drop off it is backing up at point compared to Collison last year and Bledsoe the year before that. Dude is a good three point shooter but everything else about his game is terrible, I swear I've seen him get straight ripped just crossing past half court the last couple Clipper games I've watched, and even if he does bring it over he doesn't give you anything other than a solid shooting stroke.

That being said I'm pretty sure Rivers Jr. is not anything better but at least he's a different type of player, the Clips need everything besides outside shooting.

He might not be a star but when they finally realized he wasn't a point guard he's worked his way into being a solid 3 & D 2 guard. He can finish at the rim now and he's hitting over 40% from 3 (despite never setting his feet it seems which drives me crazy) on top of being a solid defender... as far as Clips problems this season which have been a lot he's way way down the list, I'd say he's a bright spot really.

He's improved his shooting and his defense fairly dramatically. He's embraced his role and he's getting good at it. He's a far cry from the loose cannon he was at age 19.

I admit I was among people who thought Williams could break the tweener mold though I knew it was common for big tournaments to be overvalued. But no one was making long-ass threads about him.

Also let's not forget that you compared a two-time MVP and two-time champion to Fat Lever.

is because most rookies that have trouble shooting will be told to shoot less, Lonzo is actually encouraged by his coach to "shoot his way out" of his slump.

So...yeah, better in all categories. I don't think you saw the numbers.
