"another black coach fired (jim caldwell)"
Tue Jan-17-12 02:50 PM by s_dot_miles

per espn

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/7471905/indianapolis-colts-fire-jim-caldwell-nfl-worst-2-14-season

The Indianapolis Colts fired coach Jim Caldwell on Tuesday, the team announced.

The Colts hired Ryan Grigson as their new general manager last week and said they would have a decision on Caldwell's future by the middle of this week. The team has called a 4 p.m. ET news conference.

It's the second big move since the Colts' miserable 2-14 season ended. The day after the season ended, owner Jim Irsay fired team vice chairman Bill Polian and Polian's son, Chris, Indy's general manager.

Caldwell opened his career by winning his first 14 games, the most in NFL history by a rookie head coach, and leading Indianapolis to the Super Bowl. He won an AFC South title in his second season.

Caldwell, hired in 2009, had a 26-22 record as the Colts' coach. His teams were 2-2 in the postseason. He was one of 11 coaches hired after the 2009 season and becomes the latest to get fired. The only two coaches still in their jobs from the Class of 2009 are the New York Jets' Rex Ryan and the Detroit Lions' Jim Schwartz.

Franchise quarterback Peyton Manning missed the entire season after having his latest neck surgery Sept. 8 -- a procedure that has clouded his future with the franchise. Without him, the Colts unraveled, finishing 2-14 and missing the playoffs for the first time in a decade, but they're in line to draft Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck with the No. 1 pick in April.

Owner Jim Irsay and Grigson must decide whether to pay four-time league MVP Manning a $28 million bonus in March, allow him to walk away as a free agent or redo the five-year, $90 million contract to make it more salary-cap friendly.

Though Manning has started throwing with teammates and players believe Manning is improving, Irsay must determine whether it's worth taking a significant cap hit to rebuild around a 35-year-old quarterback who has had neck surgery three times in less than 24 months. If he is healthy, a big if, Irsay has promised to bring back Manning and make another Super Bowl run.

Manning had good reasons to want Caldwell back. Aside from the franchise quarterback, Caldwell and offensive coordinator Clyde Christensen understand the Colts' offense better than anyone, and Caldwell helped Manning achieve his greatest successes. Before Caldwell became quarterbacks coach in 2002, Manning was an elite player with a losing record in the playoffs. With Caldwell, Manning won all four of his MVP awards, two AFC crowns and his only Super Bowl ring.

to 'possibly losing every game on your schedule' just off losing Peyton, that's why both got fired.

Obviously, Jim Caldwell doesn't bring a lot to the table despite the fact that he went to the Super Bowl a couple years back.

Bill Callahan went to the Super Bowl as well.

Of all the teams who had the option of tanking for Luck, the Colts would have about the least considering they were a playoff team last year & had a Hall of Fame QB/franchise-cornerstone already on their roster so the Luck pick will become a source of controversy.

Belichick lost Tom Brady & won 11 games.

Caldwell lost Peyton & then lost his first 13 games of the season after that.

the GM got fired for having such a crappy roster. many players will be cut soon. and even Peyton is not guaranteed to return.

Caldwell joins the terminations because he never improved any facet of the Colts. the defensive coordinator he hired was terrible. special teams got comically worse. he got routinely out-coached by the better strategists in the game. and this season, he proved he can't lead a rebuilding team (which is what the Colts will be in 2012).

the 2010 wild card game against New York shows all the ineptitude that Jim Caldwell represented.

again, the person who was supposed "to build the team" got fired as well (they are called general managers). Jim Caldwell, the head coach, got fired because he isn't very good. I know. I watched all the games.

I saw him call a timeout for the other team so they could get closer for a game-winning field goal.

I saw his special teams units, which were among the NFL's worst.

I saw his hand-picked defensive coordinator make the defense worse every season, until they set a NFL record for ineptitude.

I saw a team quit on him three games into the season.

Caldwell's time was up.

I think your point was that the 2008 Detroit Lions had equal or greater talent to that of the 2011 Indianapolis Colts. If so, please stop following football. There's probably a local checkers club you could patronize.

tanking doesn't exist in football. it only kinda exists in sports with longer seasons, but the season is too short and the players are too focused on maintaining their pride for football to have tanking. those players don't give much of a fuck about draft order.

alot of the problems with the team this year falls on Peyton.

Peyton wanted pieces to add to the offense to help him get a ring, and led to shitty offensive drafts and steering away from QBs.

Peyton is the one that takes ALL the snaps in practice, away from the 2nd and 3rd stringers.

the same attitude that gives him all this prestige in the league is what also undermined the Colts' success this year.

If GM/Coach/Organation/and probably players are to be let go, Peyton should go too because he is the most responsible.

that doesn't somewhat effect the preparedness of the back ups?

I'm not saying Caldwell and Polian aren't responsible for 2-14, but Peyton contributed too.

that's how you get Gonzalez and Donald Brown in the first round, trying to make Peyton happy because he wanted offense so he could win NOW.

the same thing that made him and franchise great bit them in the ass with his absence.

Peyton's influence on the draft is empty conjecture (perhaps you think him a GM? then where was his "offense only" draft philosophy from 2000-2006, when the Colts drafted more defensive players than offensive, including four first rounders? regardless, if Peyton was responsible for every draft choice he should be exalted. finding time to scout Robert Mathis from Alabama A&M while playing quarterback is truly impressive).

Anthony Gonzalez and Donald Brown were bad picks because they were bad players. bad picks made by Bill Polian and his son.

Polian hastily traded away a first round pick for a horrible offensive lineman named Tony Ugoh. Polian wasted third round picks on corners who got cut the following season and defensive tackles who quit the team after a year. Polian ignored a deteriorating offensive line for three straight seasons. Polian wasted draft capital on useless players like Jerry Hughes and Mike Pollack.

no, the problem with the Colts is their talent level has dropped immensely. on offense, defense, and special teams. the only person who could hide that fact never played a down this season.

do you really think missing a few snaps with the first team was the difference between Curtis Painter sucking and not sucking? He got ALL the snaps this year, and he still sucked.

Point is, I don't care how many practice snaps the backup got or didn't get, if your backup sucks he sucks. And Curtis Painter sucks. Just like your logic here.

I am under the impression that Peyton took all the snaps in practice, micromanaging with the logic that were a receiver hurt in a game, he wanted to be as on page with the 1st receiver as he was with the 7th man on the depth chart.

therefore having the backups getting plenty of film and board work, but not developing that rapport with the offense, as evidence in the shortened offseason, starting Kerry Collins, Painter's inconsistency, and 2-14.

I tried looking it up but Wiki was blocked, and couldn't figure out the keywords to look up his practice regiment cause everything on google was about his neck surgery and returning to practice.

but I used to hear all the time how he took those snap in practice to build that rapport with every receiver in the depth chart, which was why Pierre Garcon had such a smooth transition into the starting line up. I especially remember hearing it around there.

but no, I don't see an article or anything to the effect. Thought it was common knowledge.

It's possible that Manning insisted on working with every receiver on the roster, for exactly the Garcon reason you cited.

But he would not take every snap with both the first and second team offenses, he would just individually work with the receivers.

they are regimented due to limited time. positional drills are grouped; all the quarterbacks work with all the receivers. when Manning faces the scout defense for next week's opponent, Painter runs the scout offense against the first-team defense. there are literally not enough practice hours for Manning to throw every single pass. it would backlog the entire team's schedule.

Manning, as all elite quarterbacks do, puts in extra time with his receivers in the off-season, as well as before and after practice. but taking "all the practice snaps" simply means he did not sit out any plays or drills (although Caldwell curbed that habit in recent years, to protect his arm strength late in the season). regardless, no NFL team gives their back-up quarterback first-team snaps during the season.

I trust the above has thoroughly dispelled your nonsensical thread of assumption, so that you may not pursue it further and pollute the internet.

My statement wasn't to suggest that this is how all NFL practices work. On the contrary, my position was that Peyton uniquely takes all the snaps in practice. Painter running the scout team offense means shit, because you know in practice, you carry out the opposing team's offense for the 1st team defense, hence the "scout" team.

So no the above has not dispelled shit, but good try. And as I said I concede because I can't find evidence to support what i've heard, but it is still my understanding. I wont expect it to be yours or anyone else's.

offense for the first string defense so they can prepare a game plan for the tendencies of their opponent.

running a scout offense is not the same as running your team's offense and getting reps running YOUR plays.

"Caldwell said this was a typical Colts’ Thursday practice, though almost all of the team’s gameplan was installed last week in Indianapolis. He said the team “wasn’t as sharp as we’d like to be,’’ though you couldn’t tell by the effectiveness of the first-team offense. In four nickel and two-minute offensive sessions in the last hour of practice, Peyton Manning completed 25 of 28 throws against a crew of Colt backups posing at the Saint scout. His last throw in one of the two-minute sessions was a perfectly thrown rollout to Dallas Clark in the end zone. It was the second straight sharp practice for Manning, prepping for his second Super Bowl start in four seasons."

so Peyton was closing out the last hour of practice against the scout defense.

"The highlight for the defense was an interception off scout-team quarterback Curtis Painter by linebacker Clint Session on a deflected pass off the hands of backup receiver Hank Baskett."

so Painter is the scout team QB during Super Bowl week, again doesn't mean he's practicing the Colt's offense. He was mimicking the Saints's looks.

but again, I concede. I know I've heard it before, but as I said I concede the point because I cannot reproduce the transmissions or present evidence to back up my statement. But this doesn't refute my stance.

nice try though.

he DID request they get playmakers now so he could win NOW though.

Gonzalez/Brown/that ASS tackle, came from trying to appease him.

not saying he hijacked and kamikaze piloted the plane, but he/polian/caldwell turned those submarine keys together, was my point.

not an alias though, just a nigga named darius.

since the only people who'd know if Peyton demanded offensive players would be from the Colts organization. Chris Polian, is that you? the origin to this long list of lies has become clear.

far as you or I know, Peyton demanded the Colts trade for Tom Brady to compete for his job. anyway, like Painter's practice reps, it's irrelevant.

the offense DID (correct usage of the verb in all-caps) need new players. Marvin Harrison was aging and shooting people. Tarik Glenn threw a surprise retirement party after the Super Bowl. the only problem was Polian picking the wrong replacements. instead of Sidney Rice, Steve Smith, James Jones, hell, Laurent Robinson, he picked a receiver who played about 5 more NFL games than I did. and instead of Doug Free, Jermon Bushrod, or even Marshal Yanda, he picked some melting blob that couldn't block a virgin's cock.

so thanks to Polian, the Colts used their 2007 and 2008 first rounders on two black holes of football ability. losing the latter pick was especially grievous, because Indianapolis could've drafted Tracy Porter (see: the worst secondary in NFL history last season), DeSean Jackson (he'd have been a good pick just as a returner, a position also Polian never addressed), Ray Rice, Jamaal Charles or Matt Forte.

see those last three names? either of the three would've saved the Colts from yet another mistake at life, this one named Donald Brown. Indianapolis could've used the 2009 first-rounder on a center, or defensive back, or even another receiver like Hakeem Nicks or Kenny Britt to replace Reggie Wayne when his contract expired. and with a proper stud at running back, there'd be no need to extend Joseph Addai at $5 million per start, freeing up money to resign Robert Mathis.

wait a minute. I just recalled that the Colts traded away first *and* fourth round picks for Ugoh. wonder who the 49ers drafted with that second gift...ah, Dashon Goldson. the 2011 Pro Bowl safety.

see how this is going? do we need to talk about Jerry Hughes, a 3-4 linebacker that never fit the Colts scheme and has one sack in two years? hey, isn't that your point? Polian has stopped listening to Peyton -- he's drafting defensive players now! WE GOT JERRY HUGHES! HOSANNA ON THE HIGHEST!

Recap:

Week 16 (after taking over as OC a week before)

Ravens clinch the division and rack up 533 yards total offense (3rd most in Ravens history)

First round playoffs, Ravens set a franchise playoff record for total yards with 439 yards beating the Colts...poetic justice

Against the Broncos they break the previous playoff record with 479 total yards offense. They beat Peyton Manning's Broncos...poetic justice

Caldwell has worked with Flacco all season to his best of his career...
