he said that he had written some checks and helped fundraise, but nobody ever asked if he was cool with being on the board.

i didn't see his segment, but from what i heard he seemed legitimately shocked and upset.

i'm sure if you donate to enough people (i'm guessing lou is probably fairly charitable) you can run into someone unscrupulous to the point of using your name without your consent or knowledge.

i have no idea if lou knew or not, but i think it's reasonable to believe him that he didn't.

i still blame hip-hop.

I need those halftime segments in my life.

Anyway my big point in mentioning paterno is that he (unlike those other big names) had acatual knowledge of sandusky being a pederass yet cosigned on his cesspool charity. at some point paterno's negligence has to be considered criminal.

Of course the actual grand jury report is more detailed, but anyone with any spec of intelligence can connect the dots here and determine that there were plenty of people employed (and currently employed) by PSU that knew all about what was happening, and allowed it to continue. There's no way JoePa should be coaching that game on Saturday.

http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/7212054/key-dates-penn-state-nittany-lions-sex-abuse-case

A chronological look at the case against former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, based on a grand jury report in Pennsylvania state court. Some key dates in Penn State football history are included. Sandusky has been charged with 40 criminal counts, accusing him of serial sex abuse of minors:

1969
Jerry Sandusky starts his coaching career at Penn State University as a defensive line coach.

1977
Jerry Sandusky founds The Second Mile. It begins as a group foster home dedicated to helping troubled boys and grows into a charity dedicated to helping children with absent or dysfunctional families.

January 1983
Associated Press voters select Penn State as college football's national champion for the 1982 season.

January 1987
Associated Press voters select Penn State as college football's national champion for the 1986 season.

1994
Boy known as Victim 7 in the report meets Sandusky through The Second Mile program at about the age of 10.

1994-95
Boy known as Victim 6 meets Sandusky at a Second Mile picnic at Spring Creek Park when he is 7 or 8 years old.

1995-96
Boy known as Victim 5, meets Sandusky through The Second Mile when he is 7 or 8, in second or third grade.

1996-97
Boy known as Victim 4, at the age of 12 or 13, meets Sandusky while he is in his second year participating in The Second Mile program.

1996-98
Victim 5 is taken to the locker rooms and showers at Penn State by Sandusky when he is 8 to 10 years old.

Jan. 1, 1998
Victim 4 is listed, along with Sandusky's wife, as a member of Sandusky's family party for the 1998 Outback Bowl.

1998
Victim 6 is taken into the locker rooms and showers when he is 11 years old. When Victim 6 is dropped off at home, his hair is wet from showering with Sandusky. His mother reports the incident to the university police, who investigate.

Detective Ronald Schreffler testifies that he and State College Police Department Detective Ralph Ralston, with the consent of the mother of Victim 6, eavesdrop on two conversations the mother of Victim 6 has with Sandusky. Sandusky says he has showered with other boys and Victim 6's mother tries to make Sandusky promise never to shower with a boy again but he will not. At the end of the second conversation, after Sandusky is told he cannot see Victim 6 anymore, Schreffler testifies Sandusky says, "I understand. I was wrong. I wish I could get forgiveness. I know I won't get it from you. I wish I were dead."

Jerry Lauro, an investigator with the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare, testifies he and Schreffler interviewed Sandusky, and that Sandusky admits showering naked with Victim 6, admits to hugging Victim 6 while in the shower and admits that it was wrong.

The case is closed after then-Centre County District Attorney Ray Gricar decides there will be no criminal charge.

June 1999
Sandusky retires from Penn State but still holds emeritus status.

Dec. 28, 1999
Victim 4 is listed, along with Sandusky's wife, as a member of Sandusky's family party for the 1999 Alamo Bowl.

Summer 2000
Boy known as Victim 3 meets Sandusky through The Second Mile when he is between seventh and eighth grade.

Fall 2000
A janitor named James Calhoun observes Sandusky in the showers of the Lasch Football Building with a young boy, known as Victim 8, pinned up against the wall, performing oral sex on the boy. He tells other janitorial staff immediately. Fellow Office of Physical Plant employee Ronald Petrosky cleans the showers at Lasch and sees Sandusky and the boy, who he describes as being between the ages of 11 and 13.

Calhoun tells other physical plant employees what he saw, including Jay Witherite, his immediate supervisor. Witherite tells him to whom he should report the incident. Calhoun was a temporary employee and never makes a report. Victim 8's identity is unknown.

March 1, 2002
A Penn State graduate assistant enters the locker room at the Lasch Football Building. In the showers, he sees a naked boy, known as Victim 2, whose age he estimates to be 10 years old, being subjected to anal intercourse by a naked Sandusky. The graduate assistant tells his father immediately.

March 2, 2002
In the morning, the graduate assistant calls coach Joe Paterno and goes to Paterno's home, where he reports what he has seen.

March 3, 2002
Paterno calls Tim Curley, Penn State athletic director to his home the next day and reports a version of what the grad assistant had said.

March 2002
Later in the month the graduate assistant is called to a meeting with Curley and senior vice president for finance and business Gary Schultz. The grad assistant reports what he has seen and Curley and Schultz say they will look into it.

March 27, 2002 (approximate)
The graduate assistant hears from Curley. He is told that Sandusky's locker room keys are taken away and that the incident has been reported to The Second Mile. The graduate assistant is never questioned by university police and no other entity conducts an investigation until the graduate assistant testifies in grand jury in December 2010.

2005-2006
Boy known as Victim 1 says that he meets Sandusky through The Second Mile at age 11 or 12.

Spring 2007
During the 2007 track season, Sandusky begins spending time with Victim 1 weekly, having him stay overnight at his residence in College Township, Pa.

Spring 2008
Termination of contact with Victim 1 occurs when he is a freshman in a Clinton County high school. After the boy's mother calls the school to report sexual assault, Sandusky is barred from the school district attended by Victim 1 from that day forward and the matter is reported to authorities as mandated by law.

Early 2009
An investigation by the Pennsylvania attorney general begins when a Clinton County, Pa., teen boy tells authorities that Sandusky has inappropriately touched him several times over a four-year period.

September 2010
Sandusky retires from day-to-day involvement with The Second Mile, saying he wants to spend more time with family and handle personal matters.

March 2011
Harrisburg (Pa.) Patriot-News reports that grand jury is investigating Sandusky on allegations of indecent assault against a teenage boy. The Patriot-News reports that five people with knowledge of the case said the grand jury has been meeting for 18 months and has called witnesses including Paterno and Curley. Penn State declines comment.

Nov. 5, 2011
Sandusky is arrested and released on $100,000 bail after being arraigned on 40 criminal counts.

Nov. 7, 2011
Pennsylvania Attorney General Linda Kelly says Paterno is not a target of the investigation into how the school handled the accusations. But she refuses to say the same for university president Graham Spanier. Curley and Schultz, who have stepped down from their positions, surrender on charges that they failed to alert police to complaints against Sandusky.

Nov. 8, 2011
Possible ninth victim of Sandusky contacts state police as calls for ouster of Paterno and Spanier grow in state and beyond. Penn State abruptly cancels Paterno's regular weekly press conference.

Nov. 9, 2011
Paterno announces he'll retire at the end of the season.

that nobody has mentioned yet as far as I can tell is that this dude basically concocted this entire charity for the purposes of taking advantage of boys that needed an adult they could trust. who could these kids turn to after this?

he appeared to be giving these kids the security they needed and he was damaging them worse than anyone ever could.

I don't even want to know what was going on at dude's house with these foster kids.

I'm not one of those calling for the Old Man's head. But he DEFINITELY should've followed up on it, once he told the AD, etc.

my question is why is this all blowing up now? the investigation started way back in 09, why has it taken a little over 2 years for this thing to come out in the public like this? i would think when it 1st started going to a grand jury word would have leaked out or that penn st would have been a little more proactive with trying to distance themselves from all of this shit.

you know the feds have a close eye on the goings on at minimum. if they're not already doing something or very close to. there are perjury cases already on the AD and the other dude. i wouldn't be surprised if much more comes out of this.

These parts of the law itself are key also:

sections 1461-1465
(relating to obscene matter), section 1503 (relating to obstruction
of justice), section 1510 (relating to obstruction of criminal
investigations), section 1511 (relating to the obstruction of State

retaliating against a witness, victim, or an informant), section
1951 (relating to interference with commerce, robbery, or
extortion), section 1952 (relating to racketeering),

section 1957 (relating to engaging in monetary transactions in
property derived from specified unlawful activity),

especially this:

************sections 2251, 2251A, 2252, and 2258 (relating

I think Human Trafficking is when you make them available for Prostitution, or push them into that industry ( i.e. allowing known predators to "adopt" kids, or underaged girls, etc)

I don't know the legal definition, but I don't think this case is trafficking. As fucked up as it is, it's probably not trafficking..

37. "Jim Leavitt's attorney did an interview w/ a St. Pete (Fla) paper: (swip..."
In response to Reply # 16

http://www.tampabay.com/sports/college/article1200845.ece

"It would be a mistake for anybody to assume that Paterno is out of the woods from a civil standpoint, and probably from a criminal standpoint as well," said Wil Florin, the Palm Harbor attorney who represented Jim Leavitt in his wrongful termination suit against USF last year. "You have a local grand jury that's still in session, and attorney general who was very specific in terms of how she barks her language (saying Paterno and other Penn State administrators) are not targets at this time."

Florin compared Penn State's position in this case to what the Catholic Church has faced in civil suits from the families of child victims of sexual abuse from priests and other church leaders. Florin said the legal vulnerability comes from RICO, or Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations, laws, which were intended for cases involving organized crime but have been interpreted to include any group that conspires to allow illegal activity to occur.

"Penn State has liability, and all those individuals — the vice president, the athletic director, the president, Paterno, they all could find themselves in a RICO lawsuit," Florin said. "What happened with the Catholic Church is pretty clear. They knew what was going on, and in order to protect the institution, they kept it quiet. It may have been to protect individuals, but probably the bigger part of it was to protect the reputation of the institution, and that looks like that's what's going on here."

Other legal experts have addressed the possible criminal aspects of Paterno and other Penn State officials being aware that a crime may have been committed and not notifying police. Michael McCann, a sports law professor at Vermont Law School, wrote on SI.com that Paterno's testimony before a grand jury could leave him open to perjury charges, or even obstruction of justice.

"While Paterno has thus far escaped these criminal charges, his statements and behavior suggest that he remains vulnerable to them," McCann wrote. "That is particularly evident when considering troubling inconsistencies between Paterno's testimony to the grand jury that investigated Sandusky and the testimony of Penn State assistant Mike McQueary."

Paterno might be clear from obstruction charges due to statute of limitations laws in Pennsylvania, but those wouldn't exempt him from perjury charges, since his grand jury testimony took place within the last year, McCann noted. New victims and witnesses could surface as the story continues to dominate national headlines, and McCann wrote that other Penn State officials who are already facing charges could implicate others in exchange for favorable treatment in their own sentencing.

Florin said the threat of litigation plays a role in swift decisions to remove university officials from their jobs, and the university's Board of Trustees may not be done in that regard. They now are expected to know everything the public knows, and to allow Paterno to continue to work in his job implies a toleration of his actions. Paterno announced he is resigning at the end of the season, but Florin believes he won't even take the field for Saturday's final home game against Nebraska.

"I can't imagine any lawyers that are advising Penn State telling them anything other than 'These guys have to go,' " Florin said. "I would be shocked if that doesn't happen here."

not sure how public the 1998 case was .....i never heard about it until this week
seems like PSU was not involved with that investigation and it's possible no one had enough information to act and the case was dropped so.......
wasn't until 2002 that PSU even got involved

So yeah, psu was involved in the 98 case, which means joe knew of it, which means when he heard the allegations in 02, it was not a complete shock. That makes his lack of action way, way worse.

There'd been some rumblings earlier that they would let him coach the final home game on Saturday. I'm glad he won't, 'cause if he did, he would have made it all about him and his final goodbye. He doesn't deserve any adulation he would have received from the fans or from the sports casters.

Ed. Dept. investigating Penn State

The U.S. Education Department is investigating the Penn State abuse scandal

The probe will look into whether PSU failed to report incidents as required by law

The Education Department's announcement came on the same day Joe Paterno said he would be retiring in the wake of the scandal.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Education Department is investigating whether Pennsylvania State University failed to report incidents of sexual abuse on campus, as required by federal law, the department announced Wednesday.

Colleges and universities must report the number of crimes on campus and provide warnings in a timely manner if safety is threatened.

The university's former assistant football coach, Jerry Sandusky, has been charged with molesting eight boys in 15 years. Some of the abuse allegedly occurred in the university's football complex.

Two university officials were arrested on charges they failed to notify authorities after being told about an incident and have since been pushed out. Tim Curley, the athletic director, and Gary Schultz, a vice president, have maintained they are innocent, as has Sandusky.

The announcement by the federal agency comes the same day that the university's longtime football coach, Joe Paterno, announced he was retiring in the wake of the scandal. He is not a part of the criminal investigation.

Education Secretary Arne Duncan said in a statement that schools and school officials have a legal and moral responsibility to protect children and young people from violence and abuse.

"If these allegations of sexual abuse are true, then this is a horrible tragedy for those young boys," Duncan said. "If it turns out that some people at the school knew of the abuse and did nothing or covered it up, that makes it even worse."

The Office of Financial Aid is conducting the investigation. The Office of Civil Rights also is considering whether it should investigate.

The investigation is being conducted under the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. Under the act, the maximum fine per violation found is $27,500. While the potential fines are not hefty, institutions did not like to have such a black mark on their record. Virginia Tech University is still appealing a fine it was levied in connection to a 2007 shooting rampage on its campus.

University officials were notified of the investigation Wednesday by letter, according to the Education Department.

A university spokeswoman did not immediately respond to an email and phone call seeking comment Wednesday evening.

Yea, this whole thing is sad. How many who had real chances to stop this, and didn't. Joe fell for being the figurehead involved. But other guys like the grad asst, etc blew these big chances to stop a serial pedophile. It's truly sad and disgusting.

but that can all start, now we've cleaned house.

stop.

this is as bad as "definition of is, is"

a "source close to Paterno" says "He was told it was fondling/horesplay in the shower." with a grown man. and a child. naked.

but if someone had told him sodomy/rape, then I guess he mighta acted different.

If you are either too out of touch to realize that's inappropriate. or there are degrees of alleged sex abuse and each degree warrants a different response.....

you're fucked in the head.
and don't need to be in charge of what happens to young people in any capacity.

please stop making this about what was said to Joe and the consistency of his testimony.

gut the entire staff & go from there next year.

This shit has gotten so out of control & so beyond the realm of anything having to do with three unimportant football games that they need to 'let that bitch breathe'(c)Hov/Nas

No good will come from anything regarding Penn State football for the rest of this season at the very least.

I just don't think the Board of Trustees was thinking too deeply about firing a positional coach, firing Paterno was the major course of action that they were focused on in that moment (even far beyond firing the president of the school).

That being said, he should be gone as well but in my opinion they need to just fold up the tents for the rest of the year & move forward from there.

He's probably at his dream job or on the path to his dream job, at the venue he wants to be.

Few people ever get that in life--ever.

Now he's got it. He possibly believed he could have lost it (I don't know the circumstances) by pressing the situation and whistle blowing when the shower rape allegedly took place.

We can't know what he thought or if he believed that some action he wasn't privy to, at least in the first few months, was under way.

Now? All these years later? He might have even allowed himself to forget or to rationalize the entire thing.

And here he is, having done what was required of him--but not what all he COULD have done.

And he's about to lose it all. This kid has to be fucked up right now.

I'm not sure he could even quit. He's probably on his 4th bottle of bourbon with a handgun and his kids photos in front of him.

He might not coach in major college sport again, if he's able to coach again.

Why should I lose my job because Jerry Sandusky's a pervert?

Mike would've never been able to coach again. JoePa would've made sure of it. Coaches do not like snitching. Word to Mike Bliss.

The Janitor did report it. Sandusky patrolled the parking lot back and forth that day in a show of intimidation. You're talking about a temp for the record. A temp has to risk pissing off the ENTIRE PSU ALUMNI base... because Jerry Sandusky's a pervert?

STOP DEFENDING THE PEOPLE IN POWER WHO HARBORED A MONSTER. Penn State has FOREVER CEDED the moral high ground. I don't want to hear shit about PSU never having an NCAA infraction. THAT'S OVER. The U, OSU and USC didn't give a monster free reign to ruin lives for decades.

I don't give a fuck if I had to coach in the pee wee leagues for the rest of my life, I would have beat the living shit out of that man ...and contacted police outside of Penn State...That is for got damn sure.

The kid was 10. Mike would've incurred the wrath of 100,000 rich righteous entitled white PSU alums who live to ruin lives and careers. No, you FOH. Mike went to JoePa. That's the right move. JoePa IS PSU. In hindsight, Mike probably does more and makes sure it ends.

so you see a 10 year old boy ass spread out, hands on the wall, bent over, and an old ass man raming him away, but you do not see the need to intervene at that moment?

However, Mike was in a different position. Jerry Sandusky was JoePa's right hand man. Are you really putting hands on the dude who's a legend at PSU? If they killed a DA what do you think will happen to you. You're oversimplifying a complex situation.

IT'S EASY TO GET MAD AND SAY WHAT YOU WOULD DO. However, in that situation with that on the line, I doubt it. I sincerely doubt you'd to that to Jerry Sandusky. You'd do what Mike did and assume Joe handled it the proper way. You're also forgetting the culture is different. They frown on snitching out there.. at least they did.
