and "cools off" is a relative term, just cuz he's not gonna score 30ppg the rest of the season don't mean shit really.

but wow @ kyrie. even better than advertised if that's possible.

I is scared, cuz duke + NJ PGs = national championships

but this kid is really likeable, so I might be able to stomach it if he leads them to a chip.

Even scoring PGs will average 4 dimes a game-- there's a reason why Kemba doesn't, because he never passes. Even scoring guards like AI and Gilbert distribute the ball more than Kemba.

>and "cools off" is a relative term, just cuz he's not gonna
>score 30ppg the rest of the season don't mean shit really.

Well, this goes back to his ballhogging. I do believe his number of shots per game should stay right around this number all season long-- but if they're not falling, or if he plays an opponent that can stay in front of him (a huge task), then Connecticut has ZERO chance. He is literally their only option at this point-- even Oriakhi is only getting involved as an afterthought, really.

I really like Kemba. The guy can ball. But I'm not convinced that if there's a game in which his shots aren't falling that he won't do what he's done in the past-- drag the entire ship down with him. The UCONN fans can correct me if I'm wrong, but from the couple of times I watched them last year and just from listening to UCONN fans grumble about the losses I didn't see, I believe this is his reputation-- he'll carry you on his back or he'll drag you down.

>but wow @ kyrie. even better than advertised if that's

I agree that he's better than advertised. I'm ecstatic about it. I PRAY for health-- when he went down in the 1st and had to go to the bench, I chewed my fingernails clean off.

is a myth that's completely shattered. Napier is their PG.

kemba ain't no PG because in the world of pass-first or shoot-first, kemba's taken two shots before faking his first pass to take a third shot.

early. he's overrated and not a PG.

kemba's overhyped within the big east and that's where it comes from. He's not the best PG (wright's BETTER. and that's just one example. I'd take the Pitt crew over him too) and he's the #1 contender for BE POY against Austin Freeman and that's only because he's flashy and scores a lot because he loves himself while Austin's quiet and focused on winning.

i'm sick of hearing about kemba walker's overhyped ass.

you think dude wants to go out like a loser ass nigga like Dyson and Robinson did? thats why dude put in all that work over the summer to improve his game, and there's been a shitload of articles about the bond he has with the freshmen and how he imposed his work ethic on them, and how he's pretty much taken Napier under his wing like a little brother. I don't think if Kemba wasn't focused on winning and being a great teammate you wouldn't hear the stories about the rest of the team giving him a standing ovation after the Maui tourney, even Calipari was bugging about how his teammates responded to him outside of the lockerroom.

a one man team will not be anything above middle of the pack in the big east.

Austin Freeman scores like kemba does but better and in a way that's better for the team and more efficient. Need him to take over scoring for a half? When did he do that...oh, I remember:

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/boxscore?gameId=300090046

*sees freeman put up 33 points on uconn*

*sees kemba do basically nothing*

i hate on overhyped uconn players who are routinely shat upon in reality by their less hyped but far more impressive g'town brethren. kemba's just the latest in a long line of such players. And the one whose star has risen the fastest over such a brief number of games.

uconn scheduled 4 ranked non-conf opponents, gtown scheduled 2.

>by saying he could simply increase his scoring output by 50%
>just like that.

and by watching how they play, yes, he could. Plus, there's the pace issue

and nevermind that Free was doing all that while hitting 60% over 7 games.

>oh you mean like how he chucked up nine treys while going for
>32 against NC asheville?

so you didn't watch that game. unlike walker, those threes were part of a team system. Asheville's 3 point D was their weakness. G'town took advantage. Free's the best shooter.

>uconn scheduled 4 ranked non-conf opponents, gtown scheduled
>2.

umm...Texas (only away one), Kentucky, Michigan State and Tenn.

vs:

Gtown's facing Memphis (away), Mizzou (at Kansas City) and Temple (again, away) was ranked before the season. Gtown also scheduled Utah State (a top 50 school) and ODU away (top 50 school).

The idea that Conn's schedule is stronger than G'towns is just wrong (especially because Mich St and Kentucky were @ a tourney and not scheduled...Conn could have easily faced some bum ass squads instead had they lost to Wichita, which they were close to doing).

and you posted on sunday.

>and by watching how they play, yes, he could. Plus, there's

no, he couldn't. are you really that invested in your dumb agenda here, or do you actually not understand how unrealistic a 10 point per game increase in scoring output is? also that would make him the #1 scorer in the nation; so what you're saying is that freeman is actually the best scorer in the country, and "easily" at that? give me a fucking break.

>>oh you mean like how he chucked up nine treys while going

... like you didn't watch the utah st. game.

furman beat asheville hitting just 4 threes + high point beat them hitting just 1 from behind the arc... but georgetown needed freeman to chuck up 9 treys to beat them?

NOPE! austin went for self against a crap team. deal with it.

>The idea that Conn's schedule is stronger than G'towns is just

don't matter cuz UConn still facing just as tough competition. not Calhoun fault JTIII scared to face top competition @ the tourney.

Conn could have easily faced some

... until kemba swooped in and saved the day. GOOD!

(and wichita's a top 50 school too, sooooo....)

NOPE! sinking.

Walker could easily regress, and Austin could easily hit 30 against good teams. i stand by those statements. Austin's been more efficient by a long stretch. walker's more prone to padding his stats. Austin uses <25% of the hoyas possessions, walker uses 35%.

>don't matter cuz UConn still facing just as tough competition.
>not Calhoun fault JTIII scared to face top competition @ the
>tourney.

ummm...tourneys invite teams, not vice versa. JT 3 took the best tourney that invited goergetown. We go to Maui next year against Duke and a stacked line up, so miss me with shots about that. JT3 scheduled the toughest out of conference schedule of any major conference team. you can't avoid that.

great... except that your statement was that he could AVERAGE 30 points per game easily, which is crazy talk.

>Austin's been

walker's TS% is 67.1% vs. 68.2% for freeman so actually kemba's been approximately as efficient shooting the ball while scoring over 50% more points per game. in fact kemba leads the nation in PER so he's actually been a more efficient overall player than austin.

so? your argument was that kemba isn't facing as tough competition as freeman and that's not the case.

The whole PG vs. SG thing is semantics, really, and I kinda regret introducing it, lol. And daskap's right, he's running the offense, so technically he is the point man... even though the offense is him finding an open shot or penetrating over and over, LOL.

I'd still take Kyrie for a team like Duke though. I think every NBA scout would take Kyrie over Kemba too.

>if he's literally their only option as you say then won't the
>ship sink regardless if his shots aren't falling? don't see
>how you can say they have no other options and then criticize
>him for shooting too much.

I don't criticize him for shooting too much, cuz he's had to to win these games--- do what it takes to win. But in the past, his poor shooting on nights when they're not falling and his insistence on pushing the issue and continuing to force shots hurt them.

I realize it's just a tough spot for him and there's nothing he can do except keep shooting. He'll open himself up to more unforced shots if he distributes more-- for parts of the Kentucky game, he was doing this. But he's also sank a ton of forced shots early this season... I don't know how long he can maintain it, and if he can't, will he still force those shots?

Kemba's j has gotten better, but 75% of his game is in the paint...he ain't gonna go into a slump..his points will level off as other folks get involved in the Huskies offense. That said, I would not draft Kemba to 'RUN' my team. I would draft him to be a super 6th man or to be a shooting PG paired up with a Aaron McKie type 2 guard...

I've watched them twice. Kentucky and MSU. I also caught some of the second half of that UNH game when I saw it was close.

The point I apparently didn't articulate above is that his shots, regardless of where they're coming from, won't keep falling with that frequency. He will have bad games. And when he does, CONN will lose, cuz he's singlehandedly driving, shooting, handling, and scoring nearly everything for that team.

Who can make up for what he does if he has a bad night? Oriakhi?

All the young-uns this year can score- Napier, Roscoe Smith, Lamb and Giffey. This is a flawed team...today...but by the spring, (barring injury) they are going to be really tough.

They actually have more scoring options than the last couple of years.

I'm waiting for Big East play, because I don't think Kemba will be able to drop 30 on the tougher teams in the conference, or conversely, teams will plan on stopping everyone BUT Kemba-- the old "let Kobe score 50, that's all the team will score" scheme.

I wanna see this team beat a tough opponent without Kemba scoring 30+. Then I'll start to think this team is gonna do damage in March.

I would've put Lucas and Pullen (not really a true PG, but whatever) up near the top until Irving made them look so damn silly. So while Wright has looked great, I haven't seen him play one of the great PGs in college basketball yet.

He does look much improved though. That team should be in the Top 5 by year's end if JTIII does his part.

Who can be even discussed above him?

Kyrie
McCamey
Lucas

Pullen and Kemba are both shooters primarily.

Shit, who else is even in the hunt? I'd lock him into the top 5 now that I'm thinking about it. Most teams this year, even the good ones, just don't have very strong point guards. They have ballhandlers, but not really PGs in the traditional sense of the word.

Kemba and Mack aren't the starting point guards for their teams. Delaney and Pullen are more shoot-first kinda guys. Cory Joseph shouldn't be on that list yet.

I guess my top five so far this year would be:
Irving
McCamey
Knight
Wright
Fredette

Lucas right behind... probably should be above Fredette. Chuck is right that Gibbs isn't really THE PG as it's sort of a tag team of ballhandlers taking care of business over there.

and even when he does they both handle the ball. when he has them Calhoun likes to play two pgs together, and Napier is too good to keep off the court so that is why he is seeing alot of time in the backcourt right now.

Don't get me wrong, he's balling out of his mind, better than anyone else at the moment. But he really never distributes.

In response to Reply # 26

I still have my issues with him shooting as much as he does because the freshmen need shot attempts to get comfortable, but if you watched that game and said he doesn't distribute then I can't take you seriously. Besides that, he runs the damn team when they're out on the floor, shit Calhoun was taking him aside during timeouts and asking him what HE felt was working on offense, he's basically an extension of Calhoun out there. I like Napier alot, but to say he's "the PG" is false, when shit breaks down the ball is in Kemba's hands.

He's the point guard in the sense that he's the point man, the one with the ball in his hands. But usually a point guard is defined by his ability to distribute-- and while I did watch the Kentucky game and was impressed by how he got others involved at key points, his primary trait is not distribution, not by a longshot.

Just like Delaney is the playmaker, the guy who brings the ball up, but I can't really call him a "point guard," because as TJT put it, these are guys who shoot first, shoot second, and pass third.

It's just a semantics thing though, what he's labeled as, so it's not really that important. I do think Kyrie is easily the better pro prospect-- but he's definitely not as important to his team as Kemba is, and except for last game, he hasn't had to take a game over the way Kemba is forced to do every game.

He's also traditional point guard size and sometimes will defend the opposing team's point guard.

Is he a point guard?

I'm just saying.

I meant "run the floor" metaphorically, not literally, btw. Running the offense on the floor. Not something relative to speed.

pretty sure the meaning is similar in other Christian denominations but I can only speak for the Roman-Catholic church traditions that I suffered through for the first 18 years of my life before becoming 'only goes to church on Christmas to make mom happy' guy in adulthood.

It was also used in the chorus of a chart-topping 1985 single http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHXgHjDOxUM from pop-rock band Mr. Mister (more commonly known for their song 'Broken Wings'http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWyeVfuolT4 which was later sampled somewhere in the litany of grave-raping Tupac songs of the past 15 years http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7JuArhpTB8).

He's definitely a top three though. Probably neck-and-neck with Irving, he's been so good. But McCamey hasn't gotten a chance to shit out Pullen and Lucas the way Irving has already.

Irving's stats will always be lower than his talent because Smith, Singler, and Curry to a lesser degree will be spending so much time handling the ball as well (though I expect Irving to be the leader on offense more and more as the season progresses). At Illinois, McCamey IS the guy with the ball in his hands creating the plays on pretty much every set offense possession.

One can be impartial about Duke's chances without hating on Duke every step of the way.

Bilas was saying after the game that Michigan State impressed him more than Duke did, and Duke had a lot of improvements to make.

Williams was saying after the game Kyrie Irving is the best PG in the country.

One of those statements is sane and unbiased. The other is flagrant hate that he likely doesn't even mean, he just wants so badly for people to disassociate him with Duke.

It's obvious that he won't play again til January, maybe even later, just because Duke can win its next few games without him. Why jeopardize him, his future, and the team's future for a game against St. Louis?

They haven't discussed in depth what's wrong yet, but it's sounding kind of like a sprained toe at best, turf toe at worst. Turf toe would absolutely suck longterm for him due to the threat it comes back, but a sprained toe and he'll be back mid-January ready to roll.

I find it wildly unlikely that he's actually out for the season. The quote from K came when someone asked directly, "Do you think he could be out for the season?" and he said, "He could be." You wanna take the injury seriously, so you can't say, "He'll be back," if he has severe turf toe or *shudder* needs surgery.

I think he'll be back. I'd be stunned if he's not. He finished playing the game after suffering the injury, so it's obviously not crippling-- he just needs some time to heal the damage.

I'm just saying it's only appropriate that UK player took his spot.

Don't ever....ever.....ever compare anything from your 2nd tier program to the University of Kentucky again.

You won't win.

lol, 2nd tier program thats gonna finish further in the tourney, and higher in the rankings....no complaints from me.

Hmmmm

You didn't say Turner was better than Wall in "every facet of the game"?

Or does that not matter anymore?

This wasn't you?

So who the fuck am I talking to?

Your program is Gonzaga level. Always around, never will win a title.

Not my fault.

Didn't y'all lose in the Sweet 16 last year?

C'mon dawg.

That's just cold you turned your back on your boy E.T. You was posting about him every other day. **shrugs**

HALFWAY through his rookie year...Wall's having a better season,..so?

you can claim a W in a few seasons if Wall is balling and Turner isnt...most reasonable people (which doesnt include 99% of this board) wait a few seasons before declaring whether a player is a stud or dud..

you're winning right now....pop those bottles kiddo.

>Your program is Gonzaga level. Always around, never will win
>a title.

Who knows, but you wont win one either with Cal..you *might* make a final four..but it'll come down a few years later in true Calipari fashion..

...at least I know that if youre lucky enough to play us in the tourny, Matta will stomp him into the ground...AGAIN.

>
>Didn't y'all lose in the Sweet 16 last year?

That was the ceiling for that team, and thats where I predicted us to get, meanwhile...your team was a Final Four favorite, until Bob Huggins went Simon Adibeezi on Cal...AGAIN....(what is he now..0-8 vs Huggins?)

are you this corny outside of OKP?

No need to wait. I told you was a better basketball player. Told you he will be a better basketball player. He is a better basketball player.

You played yourself for suggesting otherwise.

I know what I'm talking about. You don't.

End of story.

Are you a Thad Matta fan or a Buckeye fan? I don't know Matta's personal record against Cal. I'm a UK fan. You rock with us? We'll beat you. That's simple. Save all that other bullshit.

Lol....move that goal post chief. The UK team played above all expectations and the Elite 8 was a good showing. It was a team of non-shooters that played against players who got hot. You were more upset at them losing than I was. I'm more interested with Huggins record vs UK, than vs Cal.

>are you this corny outside of OKP?

You sensitive as fuck. If hoeing you out on the boards everytime you speak wreckless on UK is corny, then yes. I'll hoe you on boards, in public, where ever.

what goal post? I predicted it in last years Big 10 post, go dig it up.

The UK team played above
>all expectations and the Elite 8 was a good showing. It was a

pleas copped...everyone but UK fans know what happened in that game.

lol, really? what did I say that was so wreckless? I said Cal would encourage Irving to sit out the season and get that NBA dough..if you werent so thick headed and defensive...you'd see it...didnt he say at the NBA draft that UK sending five players in the first round is a bigger achievement for UK than winning an NCAA championship? lol....

(edit, "Right now, it feels like we won a national title,'' said Calipari, who was in Haiti on Wednesday with Samaritan's Feet before jetting up to New York to be with the three Wildcats who were in the draft's Green Room -- Wall, Cousins and Patterson.

"That's how I feel,'' Calipari said. "I have a tingle in my body, more so than when we went to the Final Fours .'')

then yes. I'll

yea, you corny.

Well I predicted Elite 8 as a victory for UK. What is your fucking point?

WV played over their heads in the first half. UK was young and couldn't shoot.

That's what happened. No plea copped.

Is this the same reason Cal wants Enes to not play for Kentucky? Oops

You're fucking stupid. Cal wants the best players on his team. So they can win.

Bringing up what he says at the draft after the season is ridiculous.

In response to Reply # 0

The best point guard in college basketball.

NOPE! PURE!

http://msn.foxsports.com/collegebasketball/story/Connecticut-star-Kemba-Walker-wins-Bob-Cousy-Award-033111

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.

UConn junior Kemba Walker was named the winner of the Bob Cousy Award Thursday as the top point guard in college basketball.

Walker beat out BYU's Jimmer Fredette, Duke's Nolan Smith, Cleveland State's Norris Cole and Wisconsin's Jordan Taylor.

"I am thrilled that Kemba has been named the winner of the Bob Cousy Award. He is having one of the great seasons ever in college basketball history," said Jim Calhoun, head coach of the Huskies and member of the Hall of Fame Class of 2005.

"Beyond the stats, game-winning shots and accolades, he epitomizes the leadership that a great point guard must have and what he has done to lead our young team to a Big East Championship and to a spot in the Final Four has been unforgettable."

The award has been presented annually since 2004 by the Basketball Hall of Fame and is named for legendary Celtics point guard Bob Cousy.

Walker has also been named a first-team All-American and is a leading contender for the prestigious Wooden Award, given each year to college basketball's best player.

Walker's spectacular season has included averages of 23.9 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.9 steals per game. The Bronx, N.Y., native has led UConn on a streak of nine straight wins, with the Huskies preparing to play Kentucky Saturday night at the Final Four in Houston.

Walker was also named MVP of the Big East Tournament earlier this month, leading the team to the title with an unprecedented five wins in five days at Madison Square Garden.
