Plus this team as constructed can't compete

idk if i trust such a young roster with very little collective post-season experience once april rolls around but currently they are a joy to watch. i don't think they need to make any swings this year but hopefully next season they somehow land anunoby or some similarly talented and skilled 3&D as a replacement for giddey. honestly it's almost unbelievable that they have a top 3 defense and top 7 offense with giddey as the proverbial third nipple

Not saying I'm a big Randle fan, but as long as he's on the roster, I've grown to appreciate his positive attributes as a player. Outside of his scoring capabilities (which is huge, given the roster) , I appreciate his rebounding. Any extra possessions are key for this roster given how shaky the Knicks are defensively.

Outside of him beating your Bulls yesterday, what else do you dislike about him? Trust me, I know the dude has his weaknesses (inability to handle double teams in the low post and one-on-one defensive ability), but what don't you like about his game?

to somewhat diversify his offense. It appears he stopped shooting as many threes as he did last year. To his credit, it appears he is looking to pass the ball a lot more than he did in prior years.

I have no clue how he'll perform in the playoffs since he's going to see a ton more double teams then he would during the regular season. Dealing with double teams and/or holding onto the ball for longer than 4 seconds in the high or low post are when things tend to go south for Randle.

Giannis is a physical freak force of nature at the height of his powers, and Vic was not intimidated at all and went right back at him. All his physical size/gifts aside, this kid just turned 20 yesterday (had no idea it was his birthday yesterday until I just looked up his stat page today.) Incredibly impressive to see him rise to that challenge like he did.

Awesome game, they put on a hell of a show.

Field goals, not free throws. FIELD GOALS.

The 39th of which was a game-winning, 40 footer to send a thoroughly washed team even further into crisis. Although I give AG more credit for that comeback overall. He’s been balling since he got his face chewed off.

Just checking in.

I could look to see if he normally attempts such a low amount of shots per game, but I'm too lazy to look up his stats on basketball-reference.

Kudos on him being so efficient obviously. The relatively low amount of shot attempts for those last four games is what stood out the most to me honestly before looking at his accuracy.

Kuminga gets yanked if he sucks for 2 min. Kerr gonna let Wiggins suck for 2 years. Also Kuminga one of the few players on the dubs w/credible defense, so the fact that he was on the bench while Denver was going off is even less excusable.

but only JUST now is he really getting the criticism he deserves.

it's always "the team is poorly constructed" or "so and so is playing poorly."

Steve is part of the issue and I think it's MOSTLY cuz he's high of his own supply (to shoot him a little bail, he has RANGZ...lots of em, so i get it a LITTLE bit).

MAYBE, now that people are finally starting to REALLY talk about it he MIGHT have some self awareness and course correct.

In response to Reply # 42

I follow the Dubs, mostly on here and Twitter, and I am always a little perplexed by the amount of criticism he gets from Warriors Twitter.

Like, I get that there are only so many shots you all are gonna get while Steph is still playing at a Super Saiyan level, like he has the last couple of years. So, you want to make sure you win another one while there's a legit chance with a player good enough to be a #1 on a title team.

But, as an outsider, I don't see quite why Kerr should be getting a lot of criticism. I think he's managing some unprecedented challenges. And while the team could be winning more, I guess, to me, the team's issues seem to be aging and a player with poor impulse control.

But, then again, I'm only mostly following national coverage of the Dubs, which seems maybe too favorable to Kerr.

the dynasty is dead, accept it with grace or go out sounding like a bitch...he's choosing the latter.

Kawhi never had this type of concern or complaint about Pop. Kuminga is 21, complaining that Kerr is holding back his development. At the same age, Kawhi was averaging 30 minutes a game. Kawhi's only beef, if you will...before the actual real beef with the injury stuff was that he wasn't interested in doing all the Pop culture stuff. He just wanted to play basketball.

but Purposeless P decided to throw away 3 possessions in a row during crunch time. "dribbling aimlessly" seems like a bad approach but that's what he went with. i'm sure there is some subtle defensive stuff LAL was doing that was affecting him. i still have no idea why kawhi was on the bench until the last 10-15 seconds

73. "The Cavaliers have survived the loss of DG and Evan Mobley mightily."
In response to Reply # 0

During that stretch (which included some games without Donovan Mitchell and even Caris LeVert), the Cavs have won most of their games, including a 20 point comeback against the Mavericks. Notable losses to Bucks, Raptors post-trade, and Pelicans (which was off a back to back).

And in the rubble has emerged Jarrett Allen on a redemption tour. In the last 11 games he has averaged:

19.4 PPG
69.8 TS%
13.2 RPG
4.0 APG
2.0 STL + BLK

and also has taken the new role of a playmaking hub, which is a reason his assist totals have gone up. Some (self-included) have taken to calling him "Frokic".

Did a decent job taking the assignment of guarding Wemby today in a very close win accentuated by Cavs confusion/mistakes in the last minutes. I will say this, the less Wemby is on minutes restriction the more of a problem he is for teams, especially those like the Cavs who are vulnerable to taller opponent lineups.

Sam Merrill is another guy who has emerged -- Cavs fans (self included) took to calling him "Luke Kennard at home", but this guy has some very Steph Curry-esque offball movement and absolutely ridiculous speed at launching shots beyond the arc. Add this to Max Strus who has proven to be worth every penny thus far and the spacing of this team has greatly improved.

And though I think he's very vulnerable in trade talks, Caris LeVert has been ballin'.

Cavs play in Paris next against the Nets (who have been looking like ass as of late).

Still need DG and Mobley back. And that will prove to be a real challenge for JB Bickerstaff, because the concerns about team fit are real. Absent DG and Mobley, the starting lineup has included Isaac Okoro and Dean Wade, which really isn't terribly much in the "spacing" department (and when Strus was moved to the 2 in Donovan Mitchell's absence, the effect was the same). But there has been a lot more ball movement and better looking shots created out of the offense, which had way too much reliance on high PnR since the dreaded day of December 15th.

I think they will be fine, but everyone needs to commit to the idea of ball movement and better shots. JBB needs to find minutes for Merrill when Mobley returns.

With Ricky Rubio's retirement I expect Craig Porter Jr to get converted to a real contract.

I have doubts Ty Jerome plays meaningful minutes this season.

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

In response to Reply # 0

Not that had much interest in seeing Taj Gibson get playing time, but I make this post for two reasons

1) He reportedly was a Knicks fan as he grew up in Brooklyn, so I would imagine getting cut right before his contract would have become guaranteed was a stinging blow on multiple levels. Wonder if there's a team out there that will pick up him.

2) The Knicks reportedly cut him to make a roster spot available, which means the OG trade won't be the sole one the Knicks will make this season. Have to wonder outside of Fournier, who the other active player will go and more importantly, who will the Knicks get back in return.

I had no idea he was still in the league but apparently that was his 2nd stint with the Knicks

But he's just...not the guy to do it.

There's absolutely something to the mental health angle - whether it's him having anger issues or something else entirely...these guys ARE human and they of course make mistakes. Had he come out and totally owned up to it, it'd be actually a compelling, necessary story for athletes (and fans) to hear.

As it stands though - we've got a dude who's essentially making himself a victim and threatening to retire if he can't choke someone or punch them in the nuts, and that's weird.

but I hope he's has enough self-awareness to realize he going to have to switch things up. I have to think there are some players that will be willing to play the troll role to purposefully antagonize Draymond if it'll result in him acting a fool against just to get him suspended even longer. He's going to have to show and prove he's mentally strong enough to withstand getting baited into turning into a Street Fighter Six character.

A lot of times when one team gets a ton of FTAs and the other doesn't, it's because the team that doesn't get the FTAs is taking a bunch of contactless jumpers... but that's not how the Raptors play. So a 21 FTA one quarter disparity, especially given the context of the first three quarters and how they were called? Even considering the last few were on intentional fouls? Yeah, man. I get it. He's right to be angry.

He's the oldest of that core, and he's the one whose productivity has taken the most obvious dip. His 3PT shooting efficiency is up, but it's also a fairly small sample at this point.

I think if Harden wants a long term deal, it'd have to be for less money-- or he could take a 2 year deal and get pretty big money. But I wouldn't be surprised if Ballmer's reluctant to pay for a 37-38 year old Harden, even with him meshing decently well with these guys.

I say that partially because of how he got screwed over by Morey in Philadelphia and also because this will likely be his last chance to get a big contract. At the same time, I also have to imagine there's a limit to how much Ballmer will want to pay Harden; especially since I would imagine the Clippers will be in tax apron hell.

To borrow a phrase used in the response below, Ballmer is somewhat pot committed to Harden given how the Clippers somehow found even more draft picks to given up even after all the draft picks they gave up for Paul George, but like I said, Ballmer has to have his limits.

Pretty interesting to see how far Ballmer will go to finance this team since in my opinion, the Clippers are a high ceiling and high functioning house of cards given the injury histories for Kawhi and PG. They've been healthy so far this year, so there is the off chance I'm being too critical in terms of signing them to long term deals.

If you have an owner so willing to spend and pay the luxury tax, and you live in one of the most desirable cities in America? You don't really *need* draft capital beyond its use in trades. You'll always be a free agent destination, because the team pays their guys and LA is fun.

They may never win a title, but I don't even see them being a "boy oh boy, we need to tank" type team, nor a Bulls "stuck between 7 and 10 seed forever" team. They'll be a 3 to 6 seed annually regardless of who stays and who goes, because owners who willingly pay and generally keep the players happy can usually do that.

I'm not so sure if that'll be the case of the long term because eventually, the Clippers are going to have to trade either Kawai or PG (more than likely both) to rebuild once the team gets too old to competently contend for a title. I'm going to guess odds are slim another owner will want to give the Clippers front office stellar young players and/or draft capital for the Clippers to effectively rebuild once their current gets too old since it'll be blatantly clear the Clippers will be tearing the team down.

In 4 years, they'll presumably be able to just let Kawhi/PG/Harden expire, opening up ~150 mil for whatever the cap will be at that point. Obviously, they're over already, and have some other pieces to worry about too...but if you've got an owner willing to spend, then free agency is incredibly viable to rebuild a team.

Plus, if they do win a title in that time, it's suddenly an even more attractive destination.

There's, of course, a scenario in which this team can win it all...but it's a short window. Still, he's pretty pot committed to this core given what they gave up to get it and the fact that there's so little flexibility. They've got a new arena and stars sell tickets, even if the team is mediocre.

It certainly helps Ballmer has more money than god, but all of this makes a lot of sense business wise too.

I'd expect Harden to get a somewhere in the neighborhood of 120/3.

But let's be honest. Even if Kawhi wasn't there for their WCF berth, this has been the most successful 4 year period in Clippers history. He's a superstar and has delivered this year. What else are they supposed to do?

As a reminder, to get him...they gave up a boatload of picks and a guy who's currently an MVP candidate. So...what else can they do?

I'm gonna go with:

West:

Jokic
Bron
Durant
Luka
SGA

Reserves: Curry, AD, Kawhi, KAT, Ant, Book, and...PG? I guess you can make an argument for Chet here.

East:

Embiid
Giannis
Tatum
Haliburton*
Maxey

Reserves: Brunson, Randle, Dame, Mitchell, Paolo, Zingis, Trae, and Butler (when factoring in an injury replacement)

and I mean damn near IDENTICAL to prime MJ numbers; here's the comparison of SGA's stats this year to MJ's 1990-91 season, when Jordan won MVP and Finals MVP winning his first championship:

https://stathead.com/basketball/versus-finder.cgi?request=1&seasons_type=perchoice&player_id1=jordami01&p1yrfrom=1991&p1yrto=1991&player_id2=gilgesh01&p2yrfrom=2024&p2yrto=2024

Overall Stats:

Player | Jordan / SGA
Season | '90-91 / '23-24
Age | 27 / 25
G | 82 / 37
PTS/G | 31.5 / 31.5
TRB/G | 6 / 5.9
AST/G | 5.5 / 6.4
STL/G | 2.7 / 2.4
BLK/G | 1 / 0.8
FG% | 0.539 / 0.558
3P% | 0.312 / 0.341
FT% | 0.851 / 0.891
eFG% | 0.547 / 0.587
BPM | 12 / 10.7
VORP | 10.8 / 4.1
VORP/82 | 10.8 / 9.1

Per game stats:

Player | Jordan / SGA
Season | '90-91 / '23-24
Age | 27 / 25
G | 82 / 37
MP | 37 / 34.5
FG | 12.1 / 11.3
FGA | 22.4 / 20.3
FG% | 0.539 / 0.558
2P | 11.7 / 10.1
2PA | 21.3 / 16.8
2P% | 0.551 / 0.603
3P | 0.4 / 1.2
3PA | 1.1 / 3.5

eFG% | 0.547 / 0.587
FT | 7 / 7.7
FTA | 8.2 / 8.6
FT% | 0.851 / 0.891
ORB | 1.4 / 0.8
DRB | 4.6 / 5

ORB% | 4.6 / 2.9
TRB% | 9.5 / 9.5
AST% | 25.2 / 30.2
STL% | 3.7 / 3.3

BPM | 12 / 10.7
VORP | 10.8 / 4.1
VORP/82 | 10.8 / 9.1

Not saying SGA is MJ of course, but it is absolutely uncanny how close those numbers are. Their stats are as close to a mirror image as you can possibly get.
