If for no other reason that it will completely destroy the local Raiders' fan, who are among the most obnoxious anywhere. I want to see Darth Raider cry.

Only reason that I'd want them to stick around is because a good friend of mine from high school is one of the developers trying to put together a stadium deal.

Otherwise, fuck 'em.

I don't know where the fuck they think the city of Oakland is going to get the money to build a new stadium. The city still owes money on the last rebuild, which was a disaster. And the Raiders want their share of the debt forgiven. Fuck them.

If the Lott/Peete/Perry/Hamalian group can put together the funds to build it here it Oakland, then cool. But if the team wants to leave because the city of Oakland won't finance them, then don't let the doorknob hit 'em in the ass on the way out.

LAS VEGAS -- Backers of a proposed NFL stadium said they've whittled their list to two sites just west of the Las Vegas Strip and will refuse to accept any less than $750 million in public funding toward the project, which they hope will soon be home to the Oakland Raiders.

Representatives from Majestic Realty and the Las Vegas Sands casino company updated an oversight committee Thursday on their quest to build a 65,000-seat domed stadium, showing off their slick renderings of the proposed venue in a video with an edgy soundtrack. They said the price tag continues to rise and is now $1.9 billion, saying they'd walk away from the project if state lawmakers don't meet their minimum financial demand.

"Not to be difficult, but we're not negotiable," said Sands president Rob Goldstein, who spoke on behalf of billionaire casino mogul Sheldon Adelson and his family. "If we can't get 750, we respectfully thank you but we're going to move on."

The Raiders have made little progress securing a new stadium in the Oakland area and have committed to lining up $500 million toward building a new one in Las Vegas. Any team relocation needs the blessing of three-quarters of NFL owners, so developers are rushing to prepare their pitch by January, when the owners next meet.

Stadium supporters who presented a long list earlier this summer said Thursday that they've zeroed in on two land parcels south of the Mandalay Bay hotel complex. They've signed a preliminary agreement for their top candidate -- a 62-acre plot just west of Interstate 15 -- but also cited a secondary option at the Bali Hai Golf Club between the interstate and the Las Vegas Strip.

Public funding would come from an increase in a Las Vegas-area hotel room tax and potentially from a special taxation district around the stadium. Officials said the stadium itself would be publicly owned, while the private investors would be on the hook for cost overruns but could potentially reap returns from their investment.

Critics include the powerful Culinary Union, which represents hotel workers and argued that the NFL and the Sands can afford the project on their own.

"There's been a lot of conversation on why are we giving money to billionaires," said Steve Hill, chairman of the oversight committee and head of the Nevada Governor's Office of Economic Development. "The public is not making a contribution to a privately owned stadium."

Developers urged the committee to work quickly to recommend the project to state lawmakers, who must approve any tax hikes and authorize a stadium board to oversee its operations. Sands officials want a special legislative session in September and say delaying action could jeopardize the project, but some top lawmakers want to wait until after the November election so the project doesn't affect campaign fundraising or sway votes.

Stadium proponents also responded to concerns that the Raiders would move after the Las Vegas area invested in their venue, leaving taxpayers holding the bag. Team officials said they'd sign a lease that lasted as long as the debt -- 25 or 30 years -- and Sands officials said they'd hold the team accountable for the Adelson family's major investment.

"We'll be right there with you making sure Marc Badain will die here," Goldstein said.

SEVEN HUNDRED AND FIFTY MILLION DOLLARS

-------------

"Mark Davis said that he was committed to Las Vegas 100 percent, and that there were several market studies being done by the Raiders," said one source who was present when Davis made his presentation at the league meetings in Houston.

There appears to be growing support for Davis among some owners as he has made no progress with Oakland officials over the last few years and was given clearance to file for relocation to Los Angeles earlier this year, though he lost out to Rams owner Stan Kroenke. Also, Las Vegas has committed $750 million in public money toward building a new stadium, presumably near the Strip." -- ESPN

After the fiasco of their return the last time around and how much it ended up costing the Oakland taxpayers, ain't no way the city was going to fund another stadium rebuild.

I do sorta wish the Ronnie Lott/Rodney Peete endeavor could work out, but if Las Vegas wants to fall for the okey-doke, that's on them. And sad Raiders' fans make me happy.

COULD work. That's one thing the NFL has that the other major sports don't that could work out for Vegas. I'm still skeptical, but if any league has a shot at it, it's the NFL.

I'd be surprised if they didn't easily sell out all of their games.

Then again, I thought there'd be a rush to buy Rams tickets for this first season and I've taken an L on trying to sell the tickets I bought. They need to cut their prices in half or nobody's buying tickets next season; everyone will wait for them on Stubhub. If they go at all, the reporting about fights and what not is already stopping people from going.

If the Vegas games get a similar wrap (which is VERY possible with Raiders fans), it could hurt them but I think they should be set for the first few years.

Even if we're generous and say half the fans are from out of town (say around 40,000 - so times 8 games that's in the 300K range), Vegas had 43 MILLION visitors from out of town last year. So the NFL bump isn't even the difference between a good year and an average year for them. It helps a bit NFL season happens after peak season there (after Labor Day), but I'm willing to bet a large portion of the people who would come for an NFL game already go to Vegas at least once a year, so it's likely they'd just be moving their trip in the calendar to accommodate for a game.

I'm not saying it wouldn't at least be a small bump during the slow season and a draw that didn't exist before, but compared to the huge price tag it comes with (in a state with plenty of other things to fix) there's no way it adds up. And it's all made worse since the people involved are billionaires several times over.

The Oakland Raiders have filed their paperwork to relocate to Las Vegas, the league announced Thursday.

The team's relocation to Las Vegas must be approved by three-fourths of the NFL's team owners.

The move was expected before the league's Feb. 15 deadline, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The proposed 65,000-seat domed stadium the Raiders want to play in is expected to cost $1.9 billion, including $750 million in hotel tax revenue, $650 million from billionaire casino owner Sheldon Adelson and $500 million from the Raiders and the NFL.

"I am happy to see the process moving forward, and greatly appreciate the commitment of the Raiders and work of the Adelson family to the hope of making Las Vegas the home of the Raiders," Clark County (Nevada) Commission chairman Steve Sisolak told The Associated Press.

The Raiders could become the third NFL franchise to move in the past year. This past week, the Chargers announced they would leave San Diego and move to Los Angeles. This past offseason, the Rams left St. Louis for Los Angeles.

Raiders owner Mark Davis went before the NFL's stadium and finance committees in New York last week during a 3½-hour meeting, updating the league on his plans to relocate.

The Raiders played in Oakland from 1960 to 1981 before relocating to Los Angeles. They returned to Oakland in 1995.

25. "Any chance this is a bluff to get Oakland to finance a new stadium?"
In response to Reply # 23

I feel bad for Oakland right now. The Warriors are bolting, and now potentially the Raiders. And the A's still play baseball in a football stadium. I know it's not always (or rarely) best to float a bond for a stadium, but as a sports fan, I can't help but feel bad.

as Vegas can give them.

If there's a silver lining for Oakland, this would at least leave the door open for the A's to build a new stadium where the Coliseum is, since MLB won't let them go to San Jose.

In response to Reply # 26

The league basically informed the A's they'll be cutting them off from the revenue sharing soon; the Bay Area is one the biggest markets in the country, and Fisher is one of the richest owners in the sport, so profiting from other team's success and not putting it onto the field is ridiculous to everyone.

Also, Lew Wolff got booted, and he was the notoriously cheap-ass bastard. Since then, the team hired the guy who got a stadium deal for the SJ Soccer Team, so the thought is he's going to work out a deal eventually.

In response to Reply # 25

The Ronnie Lott/Rodney Peete group put together a plan to finance the stadium, and Oakland said they'd give the Raiders the land (all of $100 million dollars worth) and pledge $250 million to fixing/maintaining the infrastructure around the stadium area. Which is $350 million too much, especially since Oakland residents/voters are still pissed about the last deal the city gave the Raiders when they came back to town. I'm sure if the Raiders did decide to accept the deal, they'd insist all the debt from the previous deal would be forgiven, which is also ridiculous.

Regardless, Davis wasn't going to take the deal, because he was believes the Vegas deal is sweeter. But there's a lot of speculation that even that deal won't work out, and that the smartest move is for Davis to talk to the York family and get them to agree to split Levi's with them.

If they do bounce, I don't think Oakland residents are going to be **too** broken up. Yes, it will be the second team to leave the city, but as said above, the residents still have a sour taste in their mouth over the last deal, and when polled, the Raiders aren't a huge priority for local residents to be giving their tax dollars to.

The whole could cost Libby Schaff her job as Mayor, though. I don't particularly like her these days, but this whole fiasco isn't her fault.

In response to Reply # 0

They got into bed with shady character/rotten human being Sheldon Adelson to get the Las Vegas stadium deal approved and to contribute $650 million for this effort. But then when Adelson began to insist that he wanted some ownership of the team in return, Davis tried to go around him. After they excluded Adelson from talks about the Las Vegas stadium lease agreement, he pulled his money and support. Davis then told the league that Goldman Sachs would make up the funding, except they forgot the bank does a lot of business with Adelson. So it's looking like Goldman Sachs is out of the deal too.

And now, since Adelson is such a heavy-duty money man in Vegas and Nevada as a whole, there's rumblings that he's going to sour the state and local governments against the entire stadium deal. Which would leave the Raiders fucked.

The Raiders are lucky that they've had a year of good product on the field, because off the field, they're as big of a mess as anyone.

In response to Reply # 29

Albert Breer, SI.com:

"So there are a few things I’ve been able to glean about the team’s future over the past few days. One, the league really likes the Bay Area, and would love to keep the Raiders there to continue to tap into the affluent East Bay and North Bay areas, which are now further separated from the Niners in the South Bay.

"Two, San Diego is a real option. The NFL didn’t want to leave that market, and the Raiders have a strong base in Southern California and being near the border would allow them (and the league) to further tap into the team’s strong contingent of Mexican fans. Third, if it’s not Oakland or San Diego, the idea of San Antonio/Austin—broached in the recent past by the Raiders—would be the next logical option."

I think for Davis, the Bay Area is done. He didn't like the Ronnie Lott deal, which is a pretty sweet deal for the team (and a shitty one for Oakland). I don't think it's going to get any better for him around here than that deal. The Raiders have been trying to find a way to move the team back out of the Bay when Al was still alive.

If the team was smart, they would've gone in with the Niners in Santa Clara. Yeah, it's in a shitty location, but it's shiny and new.

Said it on here before, but I work right down the "street" from the Raiders' headquarters (We're in a big office park).

Drove in the morning and saw lots of TV crews doing stand-ups. I wonder who's going to show up after the vote at noon. Might be ugly.

Only the Dolphins voted against it. Team stays in Oakland for the next two seasons. I know the Nets did that before the building in BK opened, but that's got to be kind of a gut punch for fans in Oakland.

But apparently the NCAA has a policy that prohibits Vegas form hosting any championships. So that would take the Final Four off the table, too. Unless they decide they don't care anymore.
