"Weekend Soccer 01.02-03: Dier straits"

Everton-Spurs tomorrow is as good a test as any to see if Spurs really are gonna go beyond their Spursiness this season, as they've been showing signs of doing. Everton have the goods but the usual Martinez issues have them lower than where they really should be. When their front line is on though, they're frightening. Not that Spurs will be too scared, with their pace and technique.
Arsenal have won 8 straight against Newcastle, so they're expected to stay at the top and keep the pressure on City and Leicester, as they eagerly await Sanchez' return. A quick big lead would be a good idea so they can give Ozil a little rest with another gameday in the midweek awaiting.

Saturday 2 January 2016
10:00 Arsenal v Newcastle Emirates Stadium
10:00 Leicester v Bournemouth King Power Stadium
10:00 Man Utd v Swansea Old Trafford
10:00 Norwich v Southampton Carrow Road
10:00 Sunderland v Aston Villa Stadium of Light
10:00 West Brom v Stoke The Hawthorns
12:30 Watford v Man City Vicarage Road

Sunday 3 January 2016
8:30 Crystal Palace v Chelsea Selhurst Park
11:00 Everton v Spurs Goodison Park

For the record, my teams:
MLB: Mets / Soccer: PSG
NCAA BB: Arizona / NCAA FB: Michigan
NBA: Spurs / NFL: Jets

we play them in a month and if they keep it going they could be at peak confidence, with a chip on their shoulder following last year's exit. Man, even Costa is scoring again. Meanwhile our bunny league is not getting us ready for trench battles by any means

A draw at Goodison is not a bad result at all...Spurs should've gone ahead in the 1st 25mins. Pochettino's high press gave Everton fits all game.

In response to Reply # 0

i loathe watching them play with a single, big target up top. balotelli, benteke, whoever. and watching the balls west ham put into service for carroll (and carroll's ability to put himself in to the right position) makes me wonder why liverpool have so much trouble with a target man as their plan B. benteke is just isolated. he's got some amazing skills, but it just doesn't work for them.

i was sad to see origi go down. he had a mini-flourishing and brought just enough with his pace to make some incisive runs and get behind defenders. or have ibe up there with him. big, strong, quick. with firmino's bundesliga tally, i'd say you could pair him up there as well, but nothing in his liverpool career so far seems to indicate he will be finding the net anytime soon.

In response to Reply # 23

and outside of Benteke, Coutinho and a game from Sturridge every 3 months, there's no one there to provide it.

They're better when Henderson is in the side, but they still need at least 2 more top flight players, if not more.

You have two CB's pinching Benteke at all times with limited Liverpool threat to run n behind them and the sidebacks are more than content with playing narrow as well because Liverpool offers no real threat out wide either.

moreno and clyne both have the ability to make runs up either side of the pitch, and the personnel should be there in midfield with can/henderson/milner as the holding mid.

or even a 4-3-3. but anything other than a lone striker up there.

firmino in as false nine, unfortunately though without coutinho to link up with him. glad to have milner and hendo in. i don't have high hopes for this match.

Benteke came on but LFC didn't change strategy at all. No service to him until the very end and of course it was an immediate goal.

I've watched him every game (just about) for three years. Some of his best work was dropping deep and then interplaying with his strike partners (like so: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBpVAHLwFSo).

Or with his back to goal, ball into feet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7wRdBRRVM0

Is he great in the air? Hell yes. Is he also a complete forward? He absolutely is.

Obviously you would like to hold on when leading that late but we were content to soak pressure and that's often times the result.

City drew so still 3 up on them, level now w Leicester, up on GD.

I wouldn't throw elneny into this one, but Flamini is getting exposed pretty regularly now, esp with Ramsey continuing to push forward.

Can't wait for Coq to return

I feel like unless they score 3 goals, they're either going to draw or lose.

I'll take 4th on the table though.
