and it was a war, but fought at a supremely high level of skill. So you can enjoy a violent fight, but it doesn't have to be 'just scrappin'.

Boxers are actually boxing, with all the skills involved.

But most casual boxing fans think boxing = Rocky, which is basically power punches with no defense and like 98% landing rates, lol

i don't follow it, only know a handful of boxers by name, and will maybe watch a full fight a year. while i have a lot of respect for the technique and strategy of highly skilled boxers, i'd rather see a fight where they're swinging and hitting each other until one of them can't take it anymore. it's an understandable point of view for a casual fan. like how i love grind it out, low scoring basketball games but understand that casual fans find it boring and want to see high scoring games.

but they don't watch.

why?

The media is complicit. They don't cover the sport - *at all* - except for perhaps 1 big mega-fight every other year.

If ESPN never covered basketball and it wasn't televised or featured, the NBA wouldn't be as big of a product as it is today.

Cover the sport - do your job.

no major tv/media partnerships to showcase the entire sport
and promote regularly scheduled events heavily,
cross promote within regular programming,
develop publicity and viewer sentiment for the athletes,
etc.

also individual fights/fighters dont necessarily build the value of one singular banner brand
and vice versa.
like every big game, rules scandal, player arrest, viral candid video, charity drive, etc. all draw interest to the nfl umbrella.
and the fact that someone is an nfl player
is going to draw a lot of eyes and ears to his individual ongoings.
same for the nba (to a slightly lesser degree).

the public has an ongoing back and forth conversation/relationship with these sports and their athletes
24/7 365.

aside from mayweather,
boxer names dont generate hits to websites,
ad revenue,
etc.
so theres really no financial incentive to cover it.

We've had an all-time great and have chosen not to
appreciate him, mostly because of hurt feelings and
lack of quiet naptime

I kind of want to go back and watch the first Castillo fight now.

His personality is what gets him discounted by his detractors - he's boxing's Ric Flair. People hate him, but he made it that way on purpose which lead to his getting paid a fuckload of money.

Still the 'fought nobody' argument is gone.

Cotto - still bad
Manny - couldn't hit hims with either hand
Castillo - still at the top of his game
Corrales - super bad
Canelo - taken to school

Lesser but still impressive
Hatton - i go back and forth on Hatton, but still Rick had a run
Mosely - a bit old, but fairly game
Zab Judah - kind of glass chin, but wildly talented

In a generation of swine, the one-eyed pig is king.
