"nbpa announces "players choice" awards program."

NBPA launches annual award program voted on by players
Brian Windhorst, ESPN.com

The National Basketball Players Association has launched its own annual awards that will be voted on by players.

The program, which will feature anonymous voting by the players, was announced in a memo from union executive director Michele Roberts this week.

"Guys are going to be able to recognize the guys they play against every night and what they do for their franchises," LeBron James, who recently was elected as vice president of the union, said Wednesday.

The players-only awards, which will include a Most Valuable Player honor, will be announced to union members at the annual meeting in Las Vegas in July. USA Today first reported the awards after obtaining Roberts' memo.

Since 1981, the NBA's official annual awards are voted on by a panel of media members selected by the league and have a wide-ranging sponsorship from Kia. Those votes are all made public by the league after being tabulated by the accounting firm Ernst & Young.

Roberts implemented the new awards following several star players publicly calling for NBA players to have a say in high-profile awards.

"The players know each other inside and out," reigning MVP Kevin Durant said over All-Star Weekend. "The media isn't in the film room and goes for sexy names."

Stephen Curry, who is the favorite to win this year's MVP, later campaigned for players to have a portion of the vote in a national radio interview.

"This program was created at your request to recognize outstanding performance of your peers, on and off the court," Roberts wrote in the memo. "No one knows better than you what it takes to shine."

James, who has won four MVP Awards voted on by the media, said how the official voting is handled in the future should be discussed.

"It's a conversation we can have at a later date," James said. "The media has done a great job every single year picking the awards. But us players get to see the guys every single day, so it's a longer conversation."

James said that players can't vote for themselves for awards. But who would his vote be for MVP this year?

"Myself," James said.

But i'm for anything that gives the players more of a voice. Just gotta find a way to make it mean something to the public. Not sure how they do that.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

Who do I trust more on the topic of Defensive Player of the Year: Lebron James and Kevin Durant, or Chris Broussard and Fat Brian Windhorst?

Probably the windhorst guy...i think lebron is more likely to vote for his boy, somebody that doesn't really have a chance to win, as opposed to someone who might beat him or someone that actually d's him well that he don't really like.

Why does a bunch of chubby journalists, most of whom aren't
particularly intelligent or thoughtful get to vote on the season awards?

Or rather:

Why do we value their opinion MORE THAN the players?

I'm willing to live with the players' biases.

I'm not willing to willing to live by the opinion of a
bunch of shitty writers.

The random mostly white journalist as gatekeeper to
awards is another old "jump jock jump" idea that is
being ethered by a black woman in charge who demands that
we value athletes as individuals with brains and interests.

ALL awards should be player voted.

All of them.

Nobody cares about fat journalists.

Baseball needs it more as the NBA tends to get it "right" more often than not, but it's a start. Hopefully this spreads to the other major sports.

http://www.cbssports.com/nba/eye-on-basketball/25144775/john-wall-wont-vote-for-nbpa-players-choice-awards

Washington Wizards guard John Wall said Friday he won't vote in the Players Choice awards, the NBPA's version of the annual awards including MVP. The union released anonymous ballots last week and will announce the winners this summer. From the New York Post:

“No,” John Wall said when asked if he had voted yet, “and I probably won't.”

Wall's argument against players voting for awards was fairly straightforward: he thinks the media does a decent job of handling the awards, and that players wouldn't be able to shake their personal biases against opponents when it came to voting for their peers.

“It doesn't matter to me,” said Wall, who sat out to rest some nagging aches and pains before the playoffs start. “The media and the fans, those people have their own opinion. That's the key part. They're watching from the inside out.

“As basketball players, we know who the players are, but sometimes your pride and ego come in and you don't want to see that person get an award, so it don't really bother me.

“(With) us making votes, you're going to have people saying they are MVP and the best player in the league, and so it's never going to be a fair race, in my opinion.”

...

This attitude's not going to earn him much popularity in the NBPA meetings, but his honesty is pretty admirable. There's at least a thin veil of an attempt at objectivity with the media, despite several team broadcasters and employees having votes. There's an attempt to take the process seriously. That may not be necessary, since it's just awards. But it has historical weight, can influence contracts, etc. It has a lot of weight. And there's a significant chance that the players will simply vote for "their guy" or "their friend" or just against the guy they don't like, on principle.

That's certainly possible with the media as well, but the percent chances are lower.

I think it's fine for the players to have their own awards. I just hope they really put some thought into it. Maybe the media is completely lost in the woods on these things, like some players say, but it's refreshing to see a player who doesn't just buy into the groupthink on this. Of course, I'm media, so that could just be saying it's refreshing for a player to not think I'm a complete idiot.

Because the dumbass media is ALREADY over-playing
a single opinion from a single player

NOT talking about the HUNDREDS who WILL vote

The voting might end up JUST like the sports journalists:

Not *every* journalist votes. Only some. That doesn't
change the validity of the awards as they stand.

So why should it be any different with players?

>I think it's fine for the players to have their own awards. I

This is the type of terrible person who doesn't deserve
a job. They should be working at Burger King.

They DO NOT deserve to write about basketball.

Read this dumb shit.

This person is good at nothing. They can't even put together
a coherent thought.

less than half of the players association even bothered to vote
on the last collective bargaining agreement.

if they're that apathetic about their actual livelihood, you
really think they're coming out in droves to vote for these
ultimately meaningless awards?

i mean, it's a cute idea and all, but nah. wall's attitude
is probably the prevalent one.

He's trying to shit on the IDEA that a player vote is
*essentially* not as good as the journalist one BECAUSE
of biases.

I need a REASON WHY their biases are less than the journalists.

Journalists play favorites all the time, to their hometown
dude, to the dude who play for the city that they cover,
to dudes who are nicer to them, etc. IN fact, sometimes there's
blatant conflict of interest between voters and the voting (they
benefit directly from being able to write about some guys
more than others)

That's my issue

A bunch of fat biased wimps talking about athletes can't
be objective? Lulz

who I play with or against think I'm remotely close.

Swallowing that fact in the open would be a lot harder to shrug off than a sportswriter or a fan's opinion on the subject.
