Can handle, is disruptive and affects the game
even when his shot isn't on. Lance was smoother
around the rim at the same stage, though. Smart
is overall a touch more athletic and strong.

- Marcus Smart is smooth, strong, good size. I'm
seeing the Deron Williams comparison. I say a more
athletic Born Ready, but he can handle it like a 1

- Aaron Gordon is taller than I thought. He looks like
he'll be able to play the four, which is great, because its
already obvious that he's going to be one of the worst
shooters in the league this year.

- Shabazz looked bad. He looked slow, and was
pestered by quick point guards, which is bad because
he's not that tall. We liked him because his skill
lever and overall basketball IQ are supposed to be
high, but we didn't see that. I'll be watching closely.

I thought he was one of those "6 foot 8" meaning 6"6 in
shoes

He's legitimately ABOVE 6'8...looks tall, like a real
rim protector, and he's probably still growing

a) Josh Smith with a better IQ might be a Hall of Famer.

b) Gordon has about 1/100 of Josh Smith's offensive game.
Josh Smith is a good handler, passer and decent shooter.
The problem is he does them all inconsistently and shoots
too much from range. But he has all the skills. I have
zero idea how Gordon plans to get his own shot.

Aaron Gordon has the work ethic of Paul Milsap who was nothing more than an undersized rebounder when he came into the NBA.....now dude is putting up 20/10 on a nightly basis & is one of the best stretch 4s in the game; his handles are also very good for a PF.

Milsap is the sluggish non-athletic guy who uses smarts and timing
and hustle.

Gordon has prodigious, Blake Griffin-like, athleticism.

HIs only real comparison is Shawn Marion, because like Marion,
he can't create a shot or handle the ball to save his life. He can
crash the hell out of the glass, can probably defend a bunch of
positions, etc.

His best bet is as a primo defender-rebounder who gets tons of
points off of dunks, put-backs, etc.

Aaron has a much better feel for the game than Marion ever did & he also has a better shot blocking instinct than Marion. On the other hand, Marion has a much better shooting touch & run the floor better than Aaron. Marion also was never a physical defender & didn't fared well against PFs. Although Matrix was a very good defender, he was never a lock-down defender.

Josh Smith is a better comparison b/c of his feel for the game, physicality, ability to be a lock-down defender & shot blocking instincts. Aaron can develop a broken jumper & decent handles ala Millsap.

>Aaron has a much better feel for the game than Marion ever
>did

Marion is one of the craftiest, clever frontcourt players
of his generation. His timing, his floaters, etc, were
masterful. He played excellent team basketball, and was
one of the keys to that Mavs 'chip team, and was that after
his athletic prime specifically because he knows how to
play team basketball

Gordon, right today, is mostly hard work on the glass and
wonderful athleticism. I'm saying that if he gets the other
aspects of his game down, you might have a versatile Shawn
Marion type, who can score around the rim, rebound like
mad, and defend 2-3 positions. Probably won't happen, but
its the best case scenario.

& he also has a better shot blocking instinct than Marion.

Matrix was a lockdown defender. Not debatable.

Josh Smith is not a good comparison, at all.

In response to Reply # 52
Sun Jul-06-14 10:21 PM by FILF

>Marion is one of the craftiest, clever frontcourt players
>of his generation. His timing, his floaters, etc, were
>masterful. He played excellent team basketball, and was
>one of the keys to that Mavs 'chip team, and was that after
>his athletic prime specifically because he knows how to
>play team basketball
Marion knew his limitation & stuck to his bread & butter. It also helped that he had Kidd/Nash/Marbury spoon feeding him during his prime thus he didn't have to force the issue (except in Miami/Toronto where he was exposed). Gordon on the other hand can actually trigger plays ala Josh Smith/Noah via his passing. Matrix was a finisher he never EVER triggered plays.

Matrix was actually better suited checking smaller guards b/c he had the lateral quickness to stick w/ them & could use his height to challenge their jump shots. Gordon doesn't quite have the lateral quickness to stay w/ the speedy guards, he's more suited guarding wing player & big guards along w/ certain 4s. Marion being able to check 4s is over-rated as fuck, he used to get murdered in Phoenix. Dude got Luke muphuckin' Walton paid.

>Matrix was a lockdown defender. Not debatable.
Matrix was a very VERSATILE defender but he wasn't a lock-down defender at any position. There is a good reason why dude NEVER made a a single All-NBA team in his career. Tyson Chandler was the defensive anchor of the 2011 Mavs & the Mavs didn't fare better defensively after they replace Josh Howard w/ Matrix until they traded for Tyson; the Suns also didn't miss a beat after replacing Matrix w/ G.Hill.

>Josh Smith is not a good comparison, at all.
Josh Smith is as good a comparison as Matrix.

WHAT'S GOOD *****? What's REALLY good?!?!????!!! Ha HA!

He needs to get off the 3 point line

His one 3 per game on 36% shooting is not a good tradeoff for cuttting his offensive rebounding in half

In response to Reply # 48

Last I checked the Pacers were bamboozled in large part b/c of the Hawks were stretching out their defense. They tried making Josh Smith a stretch 4 but that experiment didn't work out so well. They basically want to spread the floor & open up the driving lanes for Teague...they will sprinkle it w/ a couple of Big Al post-ups or PnRs.

WHAT'S GOOD *****? What's REALLY good?!?!????!!! Ha HA!

He's making an NBA roster

He'll guard 3 positions in the NBA, and with
this era of multi-skilled wings, he'll be
worth something

In response to Reply # 9

He was injured the entirety of his senior year, and he came into last offseason/training camps still rehabbing. After he did really well in the D-League last year, I'd hope one of these young squads would take a flier on him.

I'd also really like to see Nolan Smith make a team-- he looked good last year in summer league until he sprained his ankle badly, which cost him a real shot. He played overseas last year instead of playing the D-League game... maybe this year (although admittedly it's probably a stretch at this point).

He's an endlessly hard worker, incredibly physical, with a 265 lb frame he bullies defenders on the block with and terrific lateral quickness/agility for a guy his size. He won't ever be an elite shot blocker, but he'll rough guys up who don't really want a fight (which it seems are most big men in the NBA these days), and he should average over a steal a game on hustle alone.

The only thing that would prevent him from being a very good NBA player is his health.

define "very good"? Are you talking a McBob or even Collison level guy? David Lee? Kevin Love?

A big man with an NBA body who works hard in the paint is different, in regards to how his defensive abilities translates, from an undersized point guard.

Let me rephrase so that I'm clear, as someone who watched him in college:

- He is physical, not just for college, but for the NBA
- He works hard in the paint, not just for college, but for the NBA
- He has terrific lateral quickness and agility for his size, not just for college, but for the NBA

There is a reason he was a projected lotto pick before the injuries. Actually, there were several reasons. And of those reasons, a number of them were for what he can do to you down low on defense.

You say he'd get called for fouls all the time-- I don't doubt that early as a pro, he will struggle with this, as many hard-working bigs do. But he's a high IQ team player who works hard, and I'm sure he will learn. He's not Danny Fortson. (Plus, when it comes to physical play, the refs let big men bang around more than they allow excessive contact on the wing-- bangers are still a huge commodity in the pros.)

McBob, Lee, and Love are all very different than McGary, because McGary's upside as a player isn't as a scorer/shooter, and Love/Lee are huge liabilities on defense, so it's weird to compare him to them. "A better Nick Collison" is probably the best comparison to current NBA players. Collison did more in college than McGary, but he had more time in college to showcase his skills-- I have no doubt McGary's numbers if he could've stayed on the court would've bested Collison's in college.

His motor, his toughness, his outstanding nose for the ball on the glass, his ability to set vicious legal picks and be in the right place at the right time, his ability to score on putbacks, cuts, pick and rolls, and getting back on transition offense before the other guys his size can-- all adds up to high value in the pros, especially in an age when very few teams have high-motor big men of McGary's level of toughness. He may never be the guy who throws the team on his back, but he's the guy who can win you games.

Literally all of this hinges on his ability to stay healthy, which is a very legit question mark, btw. Hence why he slipped. But if McGary had been healthy last year, I would've been stunned if he'd fallen out of the lotto in this draft, and probably not even out of the top ten. You can't really teach the stuff McGary can bring to a team.

mostly off the ncaa tourney hype, was he still being projected as a lotto pick in THIS draft?
given the quality of the drafts that's a notable difference
he basically started the season hurt
i could see him being projected that high before he was hurt when ppl really didn't know about embiid or the exum hype yet (preseason basically)

If he'd done that, looking at who went late lotto this draft, it's hard to imagine he wouldn't have gone there.

However, looking back, the mocks for 2014 that had him still lotto were all before his back injury in September. Most pundits didn't start really releasing official mocks until September, after news had broken about the injury and more hype around the freshmen class had spread (with Chad Ford hyping Wayne Selden Jr. and Chris Walker as one-and-done lotto picks), so yeah, he was projected mid-1st at best after that.

You keep talking about how "physical" he is on defense, what current NBA player would you compare him to defensively?

Take the body of in-his-prime Nick Collison, add ten or so pounds of bulk (so, say, 6'10, 7-foot wingspan, 265ish lbs), and give that the strength and motor of someone like Dejuan Blair or Kenneth Faried (maybe not quite Faried-level motor, but you get the point).

That's what he can be like on both ends when healthy.

There's not really a measurement of "physicality" at the combine to compare him to, but the fact that folks often toss out Bill Laimbeer as his best-case NBA ceiling (he won't be that, but even a Diet Coke Bill Laimbeer would still be a lotto pick) should tell you what people think about his physicality and his effort.

shit, skita was basically playing for a second contract. plus summer league wasn't nearly as big a deal 10 years ago as it is now.

the rookies that have been summer league mvps have ranged from borderline starters with chips on their shoulders to obvious super stars. pretty sure okc would be thrilled if mitch turned into a serviceable third or fourth big.

McBuckets could turn out awesome but I think we sold out those two picks to be a "consideration" for Melo. If he doesn't come to Chicago, I'm going to be really critical of this Draft in hindsight. We could have traded the rooks in a 2 for 1 later (or at least one of them).

I'm still surprised they didn't make a move for Gary Harris instead of Doug. Doug's gonna have a hard time guarding folks until he picks up some experience with solid team D in a few years a la Korver, while Harris can guard NBA 2s right today & will be shooting high 30s from deep. seemed like the perfect fit in chicago

... and they need shooting badly, I have no problem with them counting on Thibs' ability to maximize defensive potential and taking the guy who will consistently knock down shots. Harris, in all likelihood, would've ended up being another Bull who can defend well enough but can't consistently knock down a jumper when needed.

My problem with the Bulls' draft wasn't the McDermott pick as much as it was trading TWO picks for him.
