"BOSTONIANS: Come defend your city (RACIST hockey shit AGAIN)"

http://www.boston.com/sports/hockey/bruins/extras/bruins_blog/2014/05/bostons_shame_racist_tweets_about_pk_subban_a_disgrace.html

And Cam Neely responds by distancing the organization from the
fans again...what a fucking wimp

We need a more aggressive campaign

This is a PART OF BOSTON SPORTS CULTURE

You say he is a wimp like he should be going to people's homes and beating them up for it.

The sad thing is they're allowed to tweet it, all he can say is we think it's wrong and they don't represent our team.

"The racist, classless views expressed by an ignorant group of individuals following Thursday's game via digital media are in no way a reflection of anyone associated with the Bruins organization."

well, actually, they do reflect views of those associated with the Bruins...

...as in, the fanbase

in light of recent events, he could have just addressed the issue

instead of trying to protect the 'organization'

question for O_E

we know they're racist, but what does their breath smell like?

That by no mean makes it right, and I know Boston's history, but are we going to pretend that if he scored that goal against the Flyers, Penguins, Stars, Hurricanes or any other team in the NHL that there wouldn't be a ton of racist tweets about it?

I don't think it represents the Bruins fans, I think it represents twitter and how too many people think that as a first reaction and now can just type it and send it out without even thinking about it instead of pretending they arent racist and swallowing the thoughts.

1) it IS twitter, so the worst people from any area come out to play. remember this?

http://content.usatoday.com/communities/gameon/post/2012/05/racists-attack-joel-ward-of-capitals-on-twitter----again-washington-capitals-new-york-rangers-nhl-boston-bruins-twitter/1#.U2PfRIXQ8Vk

that got mostly a shoulder shrug just a week or two after the original joel ward story. boy, it sure is fun to pick on boston for being what's wrong with the northeast. just don't point out the racism of anywhere else, they don't like it. twitter is a racial utopia everywhere but boston.

2) the racists are obviously indefensible, but as i mentioned two years ago, the editors of these lists do a pretty poor job and that's irresponsible of them. the previous joel ward list included people who were clearly fans of other teams (which the editor would've known had they clicked on the accounts) as well as a black guy who was celebrating ward's goal (which the editor would've known had they looked at his picture). all of which got chalked up to "bruins fan racism". this year one of the lists included a few people saying they were disgusted by everything.

look, you can criticize boston all you want when something like this goes down. we deserve it. just don't be lazy about it, don't turn a blind eye when it happens somewhere else, and don't act like twitter isn't the main enemy here.

Shit happens everywhere. Hell, there are racist tweets when a non-white wins an Emmy or an Oscar or even sings the friggin' National Anthem.

One of the many positives of Twitter is that it constantly serves as a reminder of how much ignorance is out there.

The Bruins players and organization came out immediately and said that the tweets were disgusting. What is the next step that they should take?

Also, I think it's important to distinguish between the fans and the organizations. The Celtics and Bruins were groundbreaking franchises when it came to race while the Red Sox stayed on the wrong side of history long after the segregating baseball war was over. To paint them all with the same brush is short sighted IMO.

what, exactly, are the bruins (or any team) supposed to do when idiot fans with no connection to the team post racist shit on twitter?

like what response would be acceptable to you, so i can not have this on the list of things i don't look forward to for future bruins/habs playoff series?

as they should be, but nice try with the strawman. if you're a fan and you hurl a racial slur AT the arena, lifetime ban. but online? nah. and it's also not the responsibility of any team to be scouring the internet for racist fans. not only that, but a bunch of boston fans used the n-word to say they were disgusted by boston fans using the n-word. do you ban them too simply because they used the word? maybe not, but then you get into a tricky game of "who meant it?". the racist tweeters could just say they were mocking the other racist tweeters. how does an organization define someone's intention when they speak in 140 characters or less?

i don't see a correlation here. and as i said, you get into defining what people meant in 140 characters or less, which is a slippery slope. it's tough enough figuring out someone's tone in a full e-mail.

i dunno i could see it potentially escalating to something outside of the interwebz and it may behoove the people in charge of the organization to do something about it

but for it to bleed into the "real" world the people on twitter would have to be more than internet tough guys which they probably arent

In response to Reply # 14

(b) When shit like this happens repeatedly, it is a
sign that its a part of your sports fan culture, and
as an organization you should *actively* engage it and
work to rid your culture of it

(c) The reason why this won't happen, is because white
people don't care about black people, and hockey *really*
doesn't care about black people. Part of hockey's cultural
charm is that it hasn't been taken over by black people.
Because of that, you'll always get these muted responses
. Hockey, for example, would respond to misogynist
or homophobic shit much more harshly, because those are
two demographics that Hockey cares more about (women and
gays).

the league nor the teams...

because the core audience is White and some of them are racist... not all....certainly a smaller number than some years ago....but they are their...obviously because you see these type of tweets....they aren't throwing bananas on the ice like some of them soccer fans do on the pitch...but you know.... calling the fans of teams with Black players "Nigger lovers" is cyber banana throwing..lol...

Hockey isn't going to make super strong statements or actions against racist fans because they'd be alienating a part of their core fan base....

same reason they won't come down harder on fighting...

what would "coming down strong" look like in this case?

boston is a racist city. boston is a racist city that's (somewhat) unique for thinking it's better than other cities on race. boston may be a more racist city than others (not really of interest to me here, esp. as i haven't lived near there in over a decade). so...what's the league or team to do that would pre-empt this post from being made next time a black player wins a thrilling game against boston?

Racism is still alive and stronger among certain groups of people or in certain cities than in others.

A league can force out an openly racist owner as he represents the league and employees the people he hates, but the team can't simply ban fans for being racist, especially for racist tweets.

A racist tweet is actually worse than what Sterling did since Sterling didn't know what he was saying would become public. If you tweet something, you are sending that sentiment out to the world.

I have absolutely no problem with people being held accountable for the shit they put out online.

Seems kind of hard to enforce for 1. My twitter isn't attached to my name in any way. I suppose if they got the police involved they could find me, but no way if I tweet some racist shit that Mario Lemieux hunts me down through twitter and keeps me out of the arena.

Would they post my tiny avatar up at each door? And if so would there be hundreds because there are probably a hundred racist tweets in Pittsburgh everytime a black player scores against us.

I'm not trying to downplay holding people accountable, but don't really see how a team can hold fans accountable for things they do on the internet outside of arenas that don't break any laws.

that's nothing new..

shouldn't be an inditement on all hockey fans, or all the people of Boston and the area...

but I mean there is a history there....it is what it is....it still exists... listen to sports talk radio and you hear an element of White racism underneath.... sports talk radio nationally kind of targets that demographic...not to the extent that politically based talk radio does...but obviously they are people who would listen to that..who would be sports fans..and some of those would put racist tweets out..

it's there... when the shit comes out ..if you aren't that type of person...don't get offended...

Just because someone is going to point out or laugh at racist Boston fans doesn't mean they have to make the effort to go find racist fans in other cities or sports just to water down what's happening in Boston..

it's Boston.... they were rioting in Boston behind friggin school bussing a decade after the rest of the country had accepted it..... and was Jim Rice like the first Black Red Sox?? lolol.. not really but they intergrated in baseball last I believe....

again...it's not an inditement against er'body ....but damn..the shit is there... deal with it.

I'd argue that it's the opposite - making a point to claim the Boston has a racist sports culture (which is on a group of fans and the Red Sox; not the Bruins or Celics) waters down the fact that what happened in Boston happens everywhere.

I mean, I agree with OE that Cam's response was weak but then somehow making it seem like this is a problem that is specific to BOSTON SPORTS CULTURE is shortsighted. Personally, I'm not opposed to teams collecting names of people posting these things and putting them on a Do Not Sell To list but, then again, I think every team should do this.

Boston has plenty of diversity and most people aren't like that. Like many spots in or near Boston, Brigham & Womens hospital (coincidentally that's where my dad died) is a very cosmopolitan experience. All races and ethnicities from all over the world are there. The vast majority of black people I know in Boston love Boston. I'm including adjacent T-connected cities like Everett, Malden, Medford, Chelsea, Somerville, Cambridge, etc.

Are there racist dickheads in or near Boston? Of course, just like anywhere else, but they're easily outnumbered.

So many people think Boston means they're going to be some isolated minority in a sea of bigoted white people. That shit couldn't be further from the truth.

Take the job. Seriously.

If you're looking to live in a fairly affordable, working-class, very diverse area with shops, transit, ameneties, where people generally get along and crime isn't a big issue, go outside the lines a bit and check out a spot like Everett.

Diversity-wise, in my experience, I really haven't notice much difference between Boston and New York. Boston's just smaller.

I'm talking about Boston sports fan culture, doggie

I actually like Boston 10000X more than I thought I
would

People here are actually quite nice for the most
part

And I definitely agree that living wise its not worse
than New York

I mean, you didn't see Stop and Frisk as an official policy
in Boston

Don't get it twisted, the whiteness is a lot
to handle

But not because of police brutality, which is much worse
in New York

There are just a lot lot lot lot of white people, and more
than that, white people set the trends and culture

It can be exhausting but I'm not with the crybaby shit

If there's a good job, take it

But I'm the victim of police brutality/harassment several
times over in New York, so I'm not with the "New York is so
much more tolerant" shit

Nah

In America, white people do not like black people

That's the way it is, jack

There are *pockets* where its okay, but very few

And anywhere you have white wealth you are going to have
structures in place to keep black people away, denigrate,
make us feel unwelcome

Its as American as pie

Interesting thing about Boston is that it has WHITE poverty
and so poor white kids get treated just like we do...it doesn't
make it EASIER to be black, but it does take the race angle out
of it to a degree....unlike New York City where it is ALLLLLL
race

I mean, we got Canadians talking about disrespect during the handshake line, so I'd be surprised if no one said anything. Ther is slowed down video of subban and Thornton shaking hands even but no banana video

Any evidence?

Possible banana, or rally towel from crowd?
