Like, out of affiliated baseball cratered. I suspect his agent heard a lot of teams telling him that he needs to play on another one year make-good deal, and I'm a little surprised that this was what it took to beat whatever his second-best offer.
But it only takes one.

this guy looked like he'd be spending the rest of his career in AA ball three years ago...ah, but just a minor hiccup on his way to $22 million more dollars.
3. "If it goes through, he'll be the highest paid (annually) A's pitcher eve..." In response to Reply # 0
I guess I'm okay with it if we sign him AND Colon. But Kazmir alone isn't doing it for me. For all the talk that the A's need a legit ace, this guy isn't it.
Ah well, I'm better off trusting Beane, as he hasn't made a lot of missteps lately.
4. "And now we just got Jim Johnson for Jemile Weeks. See ya Balfour" In response to Reply # 0
Weeks getting traded makes sense; he's fallen out of favor since Melvin became coach, and I get the feeling Melvin just doesn't like the guy.
Johnson seems like a damn good one-year rental at closer. It's the type of move Beane used to make fairly often after he traded Isringhausen way back in 2001.
5. "Seems like a solid signing" In response to Reply # 0
Was surprised to see Kazmir pop back on the radar last year but he appears to have rediscovered his velocity. The A's have some depth in the rotation so going the risk/reward route makes some sense. As much as I would have like to have Huddy back for personal reasons I think Kazmir is a better fit. When Kazmir has his fastball comfortably in the 90's and can set up the slider he's a pretty darned good pitcher.
6. "Okay, now this is getting weird: A's trade Choice for Gentry" In response to Reply # 0
Yes, I'm turning this into the A's off-season post.
Anywho, we just swapped OFs with the Rangers. Seems weird, because has been our #1 OF prospect for a while now. And he was supposed to provide the power this season that Chris Young didn't give us last season. So we just traded him for a 30 year old with no power, but a lot of speed and defensive ability. Um... okay. I guess.

I liked the Kazmir signing and was on board with the Johnson trade, I'm still on the fence with this one. Gentry is definitely useful just based on his defense and baserunning and he's half decent with the bat so he provides good cover as a 4th outfielder. He's also got 3 years of team control left which means he could be a replacement for Coco in the future.
I liked Choice but at 24 I was starting to wonder if his power was ever going to start showing up in games outside of A-ball. Bostick is a nice under-the-radar prospect for the Rangers as well.
9. "And another one: A's trade Seth Smith for Luke Gregerson" In response to Reply # 0
With this trade, the A's get one of the best set-up men in the league. Which is weird, because we already have one of the best set-up men in the league. Guess Beane is stacking the team in attempts to win now. As long as we don't trade other hot prospects beyond Choice, I guess I can get with that.
