Olajuwon: Dwight Howard, Jeremy Lin 'combination is very deadly

Posted: Sep 18, 2013 9:18 AM Updated: Sep 18, 2013 9:30 AM
By Mark Berman, Sports Director

HOUSTON (FOX 26) -

Hall of Fame center Hakeem Olajuwon, in his new role with the Houston Rockets as the team's player development specialist, is very impressed with what point guard Jeremy Lin brings to the table.

Olajuwon joined Rockets head coach Kevin McHale and members of his staff last week in Colorado where they worked with Lin and center Dwight Howard.

While Olajuwon's role is mainly to work with the team's big men, he said he is not just limited to the bigs and Lin really caught his attention.

"In Aspen I worked with Jeremy Lin a little bit in the post and I was very impressed," Olajuwon said in an interview with FOX 26 Sports. "He has a nice post move. I said 'how come you are not using that in a game.' He said 'I played like that in college' and Olajuwon pointed out to Lin 'If you catch those little guys in the game that guard you, your advantage should be in the post.'

"I was told Jeremy's very, very strong. If he's stronger than a guy, take him in the post. The post is not just for big men. The post is for anybody that can take advantage of their size. Take him down in the post."

This was Olajuwon's second time to work with Howard in his new role with the franchise, but his first chance help Lin.

"It was fun," Olajuwon said. "The first thing I told him when I saw him shooting, you hear from different people, a lot of them say he cannot shoot. So I went to him and I said 'I thought you can't shoot,' because the way he was shooting, I was very impressed. He was working on his shot. He was shooting tough shots and was making them.

"So I went to him (and said) I thought you can't shoot and he was laughing. He really has been working on his shot and I love his work ethic."

Olajuwon believes Lin is a very important asset for the Rockets.

"To be on the right team, which he is right now, he can really help and play his role very well and be effective," Olajuwon said. "There's no pressure on him now.

"It's on Dwight and James (Harden). His position is crucial for the team's success and he can play that role very well."

And Lin's role includes getting the basketball to Howard.

"Just the little offense I saw, that combination is very deadly and you can see that both of them are very excited seeing that 'wow, we bring the right ingredients together,' " Olajuwon said.

"When you see players that are dedicated to succeed it gives you that window to see what kind of season that we're looking for."

Olajuwon remains impressed with what he has seen with Howard as he prepares for the upcoming season.

"Dwight can clearly dominate this league comfortably," Olajuwon said. "He has everything that he needs and he has desire and work ethic to do it."

During the interview with FOX 26 Sports Olajuwon took time out to "correct" quotes that were recently attributed to him in a story where he reportedly said Howard is "raw."

"That was insulting," Olajuwon said. "The guy's been in the league for 10 years. Every time I work with him, I see him train, I'm more impressed to see how much talent and how far he can take it.

"So how can you say that kind of player is raw. I was very upset because that was insulting to me and to Dwight."

The former Rockets star expects Howard to benefit a great deal from working with McHale.

The two played against each other back in the day.

"Getting the chance to work with him now, I'm even more impressed because of his communication with the players and also tremendous respect that he's been there.

"He's a good teacher. He's a good communicator. He's a demanding guy who knows he can win and he's a winner and that attitude carries over."

Olajuwon said McHale's boss, owner Leslie Alexander, is also a winner.

"The city should be very proud to have an owner like Les," Olajuwon said. "He puts the right people in the right places. That's the sign of a leader.

"He's not afraid to take a risk. He will spend. He wants to win. He's a winner."

And Olajuwon believes Alexander's team has the opportunity to be a big winner.

"This team, they have everything they need, a complete team," Olajuwon said.

"This team is a legitimate contender."

really cant.

and of course there were moments last year when Lin bullyball'd guys like collison n nasty nate cause they were giving away inches/weight, but let's make it seem like Dream is talking bout running the rock through lin 7 feet from the rim.

the rockets have done some interesting things re: player development this summer. if their luck is as good as it's been lately, it should pay off huge.

gonna be a fun season

Alex Kennedy ✔ @AlexKennedyNBA

You can criticize Jeremy Lin's game, but you have to respect him as a person. One of the nicest guys I've dealt with in 8 years doing this.

By Alex Kennedy
Senior NBA Writer

The Development of Jeremy Lin

Jeremy Lin just turned 25 years old last month and he’s entering only his second season as a full-time starter in the NBA. Over the course of his three-year career, he has started just 107 regular season games – less starts than fellow up-and-coming point guards Kyrie Irving and Brandon Knight among others.

Because of everything that has transpired over the last year and a half, and because Lin is mature beyond his years, it’s easy to forget that the point guard is still a work in progress. Even though Lin has experienced more in his youth than most people – even most professional athletes – do in their lifetime, it can’t be ignored that he’s a relatively young player who still has a lot of growing to do.

Lin understands why he’s held to a higher standard than other young players, but he’s still amused by the heightened expectations and ridiculous criticism directed at him.

“It’s so funny; I guess it’s all about expectations, right?” Lin said with a laugh during a phone interview. “People forget that I’ve started less games than Chandler . I’ve only played in a little over 100 games. I still feel like I’m really young in my career.”

Throughout the course of that brief career, Lin has experienced both ends of the fame spectrum – the rise and the fall, the love and the hate, the praise and the criticism.

He’s had tremendous highs – graduating from Harvard with a 3.1 grade-point average, living out a childhood dream of playing for his hometown Golden State Warriors, becoming an overnight global icon with the New York Knicks, signing a lucrative contract with the Houston Rockets and traveling the world to spread his message of faith and interact with his supporters.

He’s had frustrating lows – being virtually ignored out of high school, going undrafted after a successful four-year run at Harvard, being released by the Warriors and Rockets, playing in the NBA Development League before making it in the NBA, enduring constant criticism in New York and Houston and suffering horribly-timed injuries that kept him sidelined during the last two postseasons.

However, through everything that Lin has been through, he remains the same down-to-earth person. The same person who is extremely humble and faithful. The same person who, despite everything that has happened since Linsanity became part of the national lexicon, appreciates that he’s able to do his absolute favorite thing for a living and inspire people in the process.

“I’ve seen everything,” Lin said. “I’ve seen the top and I’ve seen the bottom. I’ve seen the whole Linsanity thing and I’ve seen the D-League and getting cut. For me, I think having that wide scope of perspective helps me stay more balanced and stay more even keel through ups and downs. It also keeps me from taking anything for granted. Every day, I’m able to appreciate that I’m able to play in the NBA. I realize that this is a gift from God. I think that’s the most important thing.”

While Lin has done a fantastic job managing all of the responsibilities that come with being a global icon, he’s not a fame-seeker. In today’s society, where it seems people will do just about anything to become a semi-celebrity and get their 15 minutes of fame, Lin wasn’t a fan of being the center of attention. At the height of Linsanity, he rarely left his apartment. When he was being offered thousands of dollars to make appearances at clubs, he laughed at the notion of showing up.

When the Rockets signed Dwight Howard this offseason, Lin was obviously ecstatic. He’s excited to play alongside a superstar center, who could help Houston contend in the Western Conference. But that isn’t the only reason that Lin loves the move. He’s equally thrilled about the signing because it means there will be less attention on him in the upcoming season.
“I think it’s going to help because there’s going to be less focus on me,” Lin said. “I think that’s going to give me some space to grow and develop as a player.”

At this point, developing as a player is Lin’s primary focus. He has heard the criticism about his game. He knows that there are some people who believe Patrick Beverley should replace him in Houston’s starting lineup. He realizes that he must play well for the Rockets to reach their full potential.
Lin has been working hard all offseason, and he’s ready for the challenge at hand.

“For the first time in my career, I’m going back to the same team that I was on the year before,” Lin said. “To be able to have that consistency and continuity, that can only help. I don’t know if I’m going to have a breakout year or whatever, but I definitely want to see improvements in my game. Obviously, having Dwight just makes us so much more versatile of a team. For me, I’m going to have to shoot and be efficient. My efficiency is going to have to be at an all-time high next season.”

As Lin pointed out, he must become a more efficient player. Last year, he averaged nearly three turnovers per game and a had an efficiency rating of 14.94, which is just below the league average of 15. Lin mentioned that he has also been working on his “defense, three-point shooting and left hand” this summer. Lin recently traveled to Aspen with Howard to work out with Hakeem Olajuwon and other Rockets coaches, but he has also been training hard on his own for the entire offseason.

Lin’s job should be easier this season now that he has a year of chemistry with most of his teammates and Howard down low. When Lin looks at Houston’s roster, he sees all of the necessary components for them to be a very good team.

“All of the best teams are the ones that have multiple options and multiple weapons,” Lin said. “I think, for us, we have a nice combination. We have a low-post presence, who is probably the best center in the NBA. We have possibly the best shooting guard in the NBA. We have Chandler, who is a shooter and slasher that doesn’t command the ball a lot and plays really well off of other people. Then, I’m also a pick-and-roll guy, who can be on the other side of James so that we’re able to attack both sides of the floor. I think if we do it right, if we draw it up right and if we bind, it’ll really be a well-balanced attack.

“Right now, we’re feeling pretty good, but the end of the day being good on paper doesn’t mean anything. There have been teams in the past that have looked really looked good on paper, but haven’t materialized. For us, we understand that this is just the beginning of the battle and that we haven’t accomplished anything yet.”

Last season, Lin averaged 13.4 points, 6.1 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 1.6 steals in 82 regular season games for Houston. However, the postseason was incredibly frustrating for the young point guard. Lin was ineffective in the first-round series against the Oklahoma City Thunder, totaling just 16 points and eight assists. He bruised his chest in Game 2 – an injury that limited him in Game 3 and kept him sidelined for Games 4 and 5. He tried to play in Game 6, but scored just three points in 13 minutes off of the bench. For the second time in two years, an injury ruined Lin’s playoff experience (he missed the 2011-12 postseason with a meniscus tear in his left knee).

“That’s obviously the most frustrating thing,” Lin said. “You work so hard throughout the whole season and then you have to sit on end of the bench in a suit come playoff time, when it really matters. It was frustrating, to say the least. But next year, if we hopefully make playoffs, maybe I’ll be able to appreciate it a little bit more. I’ll also be able to experience being fully healthy during the playoffs. That’s something that I’m really looking forward to.”

That is, assuming Lin is still on the Rockets’ roster come playoff time. Lin’s name surfaced in trade rumors earlier this offseason, shortly after the team acquired Howard. The franchise was reportedly listening to offers for Lin and Omer Asik, gauging interest in the two players they signed to poison-pill contracts last offseason.

While Rockets general manager Daryl Morey recently took to reddit to defend his starting point guard, there’s still the possibility that Lin could be dealt before the trade deadline. Morey is known for wheeling and dealing just before the deadline, and he’ll pull the trigger if the right transaction presents itself. Lin, for his part, isn’t worried about the trade rumors.

“It’s just part of it,” Lin said of the trade rumors. “We’ve all had to deal with it, the guys who have played in the league, except for a select few. For me, I’ve dealt with it for my whole career. I mean, I’ve dealt with rumors about being cut so I can deal with trade rumors.”

“I still remember what it was like being on the edge of my seat and wondering if I was even going to be on a roster tomorrow,” Lin adds with a laugh, “so this is nothing.”

Lin may carry himself like a wise veteran and consummate professional, but he’s still just a kid. Let’s not forget that when evaluating him as a player. As he’s quick to point out, he has seen everything throughout the course of his journey. However, there’s something that we haven’t seen: Lin realizing his full potential and becoming the best player that he can be.

i'm not sure I'lll have the time this year to consistently watch their games and knick games, so I'm likely gonna pass tho.

Rox are gonna be very good and very fun to watch. I'm sure they'll be on nat. tv a bunch.

lots of writers have ranked Rockets 7th or 8th overall.

Cats on this board acting like if we dont win THIS year only its a bust - which is far from the case.

Jeremy Lin: 'Journey has just begun'
Updated: September 21, 2013, 2:18 PM ET
ESPN.com news services

Though Jeremy Lin conceded he has "a lot of holes" in his own game, the Houston Rockets' point guard said he believes the free-agent signing of Dwight Howard makes the team a dangerous threat as an NBA championship contender.

Reminded that Hakeem Olajuwon told Fox 26 in Houston the Howard-Lin tandem on offense could be "very deadly" after the former Rockets great worked out both in Colorado, Lin said, "I think our team can be deadly," in a taped interview to be aired on ESPN Radio's "The Ian O'Connor Show" on Sunday morning.

SportsNation: Rockets' Howard and Lin

SportsNation Hakeem Olajuwon thinks Dwight Howard and Jeremy Lin will be a "very deadly" duo. Do you agree? Vote!

"I think Dwight Howard himself is already pretty deadly of a player," Lin said. "For us, it's just a matter of getting on the same page and buying into the system, and I think adding as a piece to the puzzle, it's incredible. I think we're all extremely excited and we know what we have, and he looks healthy, he looks explosive, and he's looking better and better in terms of recovering from his surgery."

Howard left the Los Angeles Lakers in July to sign a four-year, $88 million deal with the Rockets, which gives the center the ability to opt out of his contract after three seasons. With James Harden an established perimeter star, the Howard acquisition is expected to elevate Houston -- a first-round playoff loser to Oklahoma City last year -- into the upper tier of Western Conference teams.

"We don't have the experience," Lin said, "so we're going to have to make up for that somehow, some way. And we don't really want to wait around and wait three years down the line to be able to compete for a championship; we want to do that now. ... If everything jells together in an ideal situation, I think we can be a championship contender for sure. But that's a big 'if,' and we understand that, and our coaching staff understands that.

"And I think our players right now, we're all talking about being committed to winning a championship, and being able to sacrifice. I think sacrifice is going to be a big, big word for our team."

In his workouts with Howard, Lin said he has been surprised by the big man's touch from the foul line. Howard shot 49 percent from the line in his final season in Orlando and in his one and only season with the Lakers, inspiring some opponents to intentionally foul him.

"One thing that people don't really see, can really shoot free throws," Lin said. "When we were shooting, he was shooting really, really well. And I think for him it's just a matter of getting more comfortable in a game. It's definitely there. Sometimes you'll see players who might not be able to shoot the free throw that, well, you can understand. ... But he can really shoot, and that's something that really caught me by surprise."

Undrafted out of Harvard and cut by three teams, including Houston, Lin caught the basketball world by surprise during his brief but wild Linsanity run with the New York Knicks in the middle of the 2011-12 season, when he suddenly became one of the more recognizable athletes in the world.

After the Knicks declined to match the three-year, $25.1 million offer sheet Lin received from Houston, he averaged 13.4 points and 6.1 assists and started all 82 regular-season games before getting hurt against the Thunder. Lin acknowledged that he was burdened by expectations, and that he got down on himself while failing to duplicate Linsanity in Houston. But Olajuwon said Howard's presence would allow Lin to play pressure-free basketball this year.

"I agree with that, more so now than ever," Lin said. "The majority of the pressure is leaning on other guys, and it's going to give me a little bit more space and a little bit more freedom to be able to just be myself, and I think that's something that I'm looking forward to for sure. For me, I have high expectations for myself, and in no way was I satisfied with my year last year. But the fact that other people think it was a disappointing season to me is somewhat of a compliment that they think I might be able to do more.

"One thing I have to remind myself is I just turned 25 years old, and to be honest I really have only been playing consistent basketball in the NBA for a season and a half, if that, and so I'm very young in my career. And because the expectations of Linsanity are so big and the shadow is so large ... sometimes I have to take a step back and remind myself the journey has just begun.

"I don't have as much freedom or the usage rate that I had in New York. I have to learn how to play a little more off the ball, how to cut better, how to shoot better, how to defend better. There are a lot of holes in my game, and I'll be the first one to admit that. ... It's just a matter of trying to become better and repair and improve. Teams know what my strengths and weaknesses are now, and I don't have that element of surprise anymore."

Especially the last couple answers.

We all have the same goal, which is to win a championship. We understand it won't be easy. A lot of great teams in the West but we have the opportunity to do something special if we stay together. I believe in this team, this coach and Les. They just finished a beautiful locker room. They've done their jobs and now it's time to do ours. Seeds don't matter. We want a championship. I believe in this team.

Our focus is on the defensive end. We have to do it as a team. Me and Omer have an opportunity to mess up a lot of teams on the defensive end. Me and him playing together will allow me to roam around and be who I am.

Focus is to dominate on both ends of the floor. That's what Kevin has been talking about day one - dominating the paint.

I feel great. I spent a lot of time in Colorado and training. One of the best summers I've had in awhile. Last summer I didn't get an opportunity to train. I tried to jump into the season and I didn't think that was right. I'm a lot healthier this time around. I worked with Kevin and Hakeem. They don't want me to use my power all the time but instead my speed and quickness.

Me and Hakeem have been working together the last couple of years. I love working out with him. We had a great time in Aspen and we're looking forward to the season.

As you know, health is very important. Being healthy, I think it will bring back a lot of things I've done in the past. I'm very excited about that. Jeremy threw a bad pass and I dunked it. He was in shock that I caught it. He hasn't seen it and it's been awhile since I've been able to do that stuff. It takes awhile to recover from back surgery. I think I'm healthy now.

No need to get into that(LA). Every city is different. I like it here. The people are great. They've embraced me. In LA, it's over with. It didn't work out on both sides. We have to move on. It is what it is.

I would say in Orlando, the years we went to the Finals, we spent a lot of time together. That's what I like about this team. It's a close-knit team. The chemistry is already there. We've talked about ways we can improve as a team.

Me and Omer, I've been working on my three game. Coach said if I make 7-10 in practice, I can shoot one three a game. I have not done it yet but for me and Omer to work, it's real simple: if I get the rebound, he has to run the floor and get easy buckets. If he gets the rebound, same thing(for me). Defensive end, I can guard fours. I've done it in the past. I like the challenge. Me and him can work together. It would be a great opportunity to play together. Even if he comes off the bench, the defense won't go down. I think it's gonna be great. I know he wants to win as much as we all want to. We all have to sacrifice to be a championship team, whatever it may be. Everybody is on board with that.

I haven't talked one on one with him(Omer) yet.

I don't have a problem(playing the four). I'm only 6'9. I should be playing the three.(joking)

I'm excited about the opportunity to play with these young guys. They're full of energy. They wanted to play 10-12 pickup games. They're full of life. I love that feeling. Reminds me of the team in Orlando, we were always together. It really makes the team better on the floor, when you have great chemistry off the floor.

For any team to be successful, you need a great environment. You don't want to work in a bad place. What happened in LA was unfortunate. We were plagued with injuries and didn't happen the way we wanted it to. I'm in a better place now. I'm looking forward to this season.

I've been in the NBA at the top. You'll get scrutinized. You have to stay away from it as much as possible. You have to do the same thing on a daily basis. You get caught up in the good, the bad and the ugly, it messes you up as a player and person. That happened last year. You have to stay away from the negativity and focus on the task at hand.

Up to run? I'm one of the fastest bigs in years. Running isn't an issue with me. I want to win. We all have to sacrifice something. Sometimes we'll slow the game down. Come playoff time, games are slowed down. It's a half-court game. We're equipped for that. We can run. If we want a half court game, there are ways to be effective. Early on in the season, the best thing is to run. Late in the season, you have to play in the half court.

(I love you guys, I wanted more questions)

One guy I really like - he has an opportunity to be special - that's Terrence Jones. Lefty, big body, can play the 4 or 5, shoots the ball well. I think he'll blossom in this offense. Chandler is the same way. I'm really excited about Jeremy. This season, a lot of pressure will be off him and he can just play. Me and him in the PnR with shooters spreading the floor, we have a great opportunity. Working with these guys, guys like Casspi, the guy is pretty good. We have guys that people don't know by name but once they see them play, they'll see how good this team can be.

The team in Orlando, we thrived off that. They didn't know guys on the team and were never mentioned in anything. It was all about the other team. We were the laughing stock. We have this team here, that same style of basketball. 4 out, 1 in, we'll run, beat you in the half-court with PnRs and post ups and James Harden - one of the best 2 guards in the NBA, who I think can become the best. That's my teammate and my guy and I'm gonna stick with him.
