Houston can get them only by giving away EVERYBODY, and taking zero salary back.

Dallas is a long shot. Dirk's 22 mil and Marion make it tough.

UNLESS

These two cornballs take a significant pay cut.

So the superfriends would have to take pay cuts right off the bat, which is money that can't be made back up even if Dirk takes a big cut on his next deal.

Its only for one season, but both of these guys would already be forfeiting a supermax deal with that extra year. Hard to imagine, but Cuban can be persuasive.

If Dirk takes 10 mil a yr on his next deal, that's 12 mil less the Mavs have committed to him.

So if they wanna pay CP3/Dwight a combined 34 mil per for 4yrs (136 mil total), they could pay them 12 mil a piece in the first yr then roughly 18.7 for 3 yrs after.

I mean if the Rockets can poison pill, don't see why Cuban can't get creative.

They can't escalate the deal in such a way to recoup the money they would forfeit next season. A max is a max, you either get it or you don't.

Dirk taking a big cut would help them fill out the roster though, no question.

Bottom line is they would both have to essentially throw away a big chunk of $$$ to make this happen in Dallas. Cuban would have to get real creative with other incentives.

If you get a 4 yr/70 mil deal, who's to say how it's paid out yr to yr. It doesn't have to be in even increments to my understanding (like how Hou got Asik and Lin, 5 mil a yr for a few yrs then 15 at the end of the deal).

>Dirk taking a big cut would help them fill out the roster

Only money they'd be throwing away would be the extra yr with their current teams but you're right, Cuban could make up the difference with incentives and possibly endorsement deals (I mean dude is a billionaire).

asik and lin were RFAs w/ 2 yrs or less of nba service. that restricts the amount that they can be paid in the 1st 2 yrs of any new contract. after the first 2, you can pay them any amt up to the max. that's how the "poison pill" contracts work. only certain players are eligible for them.

paul and howard obv aren't. they're eligible for max annual salary w/ 15 (?) pct annual raises.

For the Clips to make that work, they'd have to make a deal with the Lakers

Usually that would be unthinkable, a Lakers/Clippers deal, but if a sign and trade is possible with D12, I'm hearing Griffin/Bledsoe would be on the table

Would Laker fans do a D12 for Blake/Bled? (assuming that's the deal on the table)

I don't think it's possible either, but if CP3 wants him that bad, they might do something radical to make it work with him

And Blake/Bled for Howard is by far the best offer the Lakers would get for D12

As for the leverage, the one with the most leverage is CP3...he can pretty much dictate to management what he would want in order to stay.

He don't like Blake...that's the biggest reason. He says I'll sign if you do something about Griffin, then they gotta make a choice
And if Clipper management had to choose between him and Blake, who would they choose?

Blake gets to play for a classy franchise.CP3 stays in LA. DHo plays for a franchise with few expectations. Plus, the Lakers get Bledsoe who's a good player.

Mike Antoni is the coach and that's a problem. They should fire him and hire Lionel Hollins. George Karl, right today, is a better coach than Mike Antoni.

CP3 is my favourite player ever, but the people LOVE Blake. I see people in Griffin jerseys all the time, I have one even. I have seen maybe 1 or 2 CP3 Clipper jerseys (have one of those as well..).

With that said I fully expect the clips to do something monumentally stupid before next season.

http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/nba/story/_/id/9386386/chris-paul-dwight-howard-hoping-play-together-sources

Chris Paul and Dwight Howard have been in consistent contact recently about the possibility of becoming teammates next season, according to league sources.

Paul and Howard will be the biggest free agents on the market this summer, and their desire is to play together, the sources said.

"They would love to play together if somebody can make it happen," one of the sources said.

The Atlanta Hawks could make it happen. Atlanta, which is Howard's hometown, has the cap room to sign both players to maximum-salaried contracts.

Howard is not particularly fond of the idea of returning to Atlanta, but he would do so to team up with Paul, the sources said.

But Paul, despite recently being upset with the Clippers over the perception that he got coach Vinny Del Negro fired, is unlikely to leave Los Angeles, one source said. He has gotten over his anger with the club and likes living in Los Angeles.

"It would be very tough for him to go to Atlanta," the source said. "He loved Atlanta when they should have drafted him in '05 but not so much since then. But hey, everybody is an option at this point."

The preference for both players would be to play together for the Clippers, according to the sources. Because the Clippers don't have enough cap room to sign Howard as a free agent, it would take a sign-and-trade deal with the Lakers to make it happen.

The Clippers would be open to working out a deal, but they fear the Lakers would never trade Howard to them, according to the sources.

But while trading Howard to a team in their own building seems unthinkable, the Lakers are not likely to get a better trade package elsewhere than say, Blake Griffin and Eric Bledsoe.

Sources say there was a faction of the Clippers organization that entertained the idea of trading Griffin for Howard when Howard wanted out of Orlando in 2012. But others within the franchise regarded Griffin as "untouchable," and there were never any serious discussions with Orlando.

Multiple sources insist Griffin remains untouchable. But realistically he would have to be included in any deal that brought Howard to the Clippers.

Paul and Howard have been communicating via text messages. This is not the first time they've talked about teaming up together.

During the lockout of 2011, they spoke often about going to Dallas together to play for the Mavericks. But their subsequent trades, Howard's decision to opt into the final year of his contract in Orlando and Dallas' current payroll situation seemed to eliminate the possibility of them becoming teammates.

It's basically what would have happened had he never been traded anyway. We'd have had an injured Bynum who we wouldn't re sign so now were back at square one.

Sucks, but what can you do.

I'd prefer Pau plays out his last year as a Laker and gear up for next summer.

In response to Reply # 0

it is for the Lakers...because those other teams will have to do sign and trades with the Lakers to make that happen...and through them competing over dwight...those sign and trade offers get better...

Lakers are in a win win right now regarding dwight...

I'll go on record now saying that I do not want the Lakers to re-sign Dwight. I think it's best for the team in the long run in we move on and go in a different direction..

for example if he wants to go to brookly and the Lakers end up with Brook Lopez...we ended up moving and injured Bynum and got back Brook Lopez...that's more than cool.

In response to Reply # 89

unless a team has the cap space to sign howard...they are going to have to do a sign and trade with the Lakers for Howard to get the salary he wants. The Lakers can re-sign Howard for more money than any other team being that he's their player. So the Lakers could sign him (to less than a max deal as I believe that's how you have to do sign and trades now with the collective bargaining).... but the Lakers sign him..and trade him to a team ...with the Lakers getting back comparable salaries..

that's how it works....and has for years, so I'm not sure why you wouldn't know that.

should have accepted...

Look at the teams on the alleged Dwight list that do not have cap space.....

now tell me that those teams do not have pieces that the Lakers could not only use....but would put them in a winning position when you consider they ended up giving up Drew Bynum in his current state for either a re-signed Dwight..or whatever they could get for Dwight..

that's a win win...

and if he just leaves for Houston or whomever doesn't have to make a deal with us.... We are left with something we havent had for years in our near future.....cap space..

cap space is valuble when you are the greatest pro sports franchise in modern history.....in LOS ANGELES...and you've never had to beg players to come play here..

it's a win....win....win...

he's not better than Blake offensively and he's only marginally better than DJ defensively

It is amazing how one season with a back injury makes people forget how scary a player Howard was....

It's OK...when he goes to Houston or the Clippers (don't think the Clips will happen though), people will suddenly remember...

Again, dude can still improve but it's crazy to see how an injury plagued season and a bad decision can make someone into a scrub

If it doesn't happen, that's fine, but he did his job.
