"Official 'The Doctor' (Julius Erving Documentary) Post. June 10th NBA TV"

yeah I know I'm early but that commercial has me amped.

While I'd appreciate a 9-part-mini-series, this will be 90 minutes well spent.

just the way magic johnson glows when talking about doc is like get the pop corn ready.

doc is a ground breaker and his aba era has been used for and against him and yet you can't take nothing away from this man.

all due respect Connie Hawkins and cats who were leaping crazy back in the day, however Dr J made so many cats want to be like him and he had that class vibe on top of that and he was a Soul brother as well.

he always stayed cool.

be at south main st court practicin my finger rolls an shit. fuck a free throw. fuck a jump shot (this was before 3 pointers, mind you).

finger rolls.

i remember (old ninja shit) when they had the dr j cartoon ads on the back of comic books for the converse all stars.

the commercials: "hey doctor j! where'd you get those moooves, are you wearin magic shooooooes!!"

the special olympic or march of dimes comemrcial w/ the sixers w/ doc playin w/ the special kids (i know) and he calls a foul, and hte kid says "foooulll??" and doc goes, 'that's right, you fouled him'.

this cat name wilton used to make fun of that commercial. he wuh kinda special his damn self, but we'd be on the court and if anybody called foul, he'd say 'foooooouuuullll?' and twist his face all up.

i digress.

but doc was that dude, tho.

peace & blessings,

x.

In response to Reply # 0

Dr J and Cap are really the only exceptions and even they don't get their due. It didn't have the legend mystique of the 60s or the television exposure of the mid 80s onward and I feel like there are some very consistently overlooked players in that era.

Hopefully like Monroe's book, this doc and other stuff like that changes that.

Above all, I am just excited for the footage of the Doc.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Hayes almost never comes up in the GOAT power forward discussions, McGinnis is almost totally forgotten and McAdoo was the only league MVP and maybe the only scoring champion before 97 that was not on the NBA @ 50 list.

How did a city that revered one of the classiest black
athletes ever regress to a city that only appreciates
black athletes with criminal records?

I mean, isn't it CLEAR that Dr. J would be called a "sellout"
who wasn't "tough" enough if he played today?

Said differently: when did y'all become a city full of
greasy-lipped onion breath ass niggas with jagged beard
lineups?

you see and I did like AI however Dr J made you feel good and yet he had attitude and creativity in the air. now as Much as i respected OJ as a football player, Dr J never put on no airs and stayed cool just liek George Gervin.

for a cat to be acting like a Sell out he would be grinning, shucking and big eyeing and trying to fit in, DR J never came across like that.

he was just a down to earth but a more laid back version of a Walt Clyde Frazier. he did his talking on the court and kept thing even toned without losing his cool.

most folks don't even trip over him going for larry bird's neck and that was a time when alot of white folks were bowing at Bird's feet for i see you Donny Aiello

and I dig Bird, however Dr J was street. he wasn't polished on the acting like Magic Johnson and the after era.

you never heard a Dr J Press conference with all the over the top language that kobe Bryant uses and crap he says to sound Hard.

Dr J was from a era where the play did the talking and he was a Brother all the way.

(and finally) won that elusive championship (out of 4 appearances) and that was mainly due to Moses Malone whose hard nose attitude and take no prisoners approach to the game, ironically, were qualities philly fans loved abt him and all their past and present athletes in general for that matter and what you ridicule them for...mistakenly assuming they revere "criminals" when it's really the toughness they admire in their sports legends which is usually an attribute of players who come from those troubled backgrounds.

If anything this isn't a philly thing but more so abt how many of today's athletes don't come from stable family backgrounds like a Donovan McNabb or many of the athletes of Doc's era. As a result of this living and social instability, troubled and wayward athletes have become commonplace nowadays in the sports world but that wasn't as widespread or covered by the press as it is today in a media saturated society which is why you had a Dr. J vs 20 yrs. later you get an Allen Iverson.

This last point isn't really true. Because Iverson wasn't
"tough enough" to be okay with coming off the bench. He cried
like a little pussy and ruined his career.

His last few tumultuous seasons in the league were abt his ego and even his disillusionment, not his toughness or the lack thereof...

>This isn't entirely true. Black athletes been poor since
>forever.

Being impoverished didn't/doesn't necessarily mean you're coming out of an unstable living and social environment - particularly the athletes from Doc's generation because first and foremost there was solidarity in blk communities as a result of the social/political climate blk ppl lived in (segregation/civil rights era) which demanded that we have each other's back and that also meant that blk families had to instill in their children a sense of dignity and (race) pride...and that was evident not just of Dr. J but many blk athletes from that generation.

Needless to say, it was only a matter of time before we began to see blk families and their living environments radically undergo changes (for the worse) post civil rights movement which consequently led to the disintegration of blk families/communities which also explains much abt today's blk athletes and why so many are lost and troubled...

In response to Reply # 10

to do with his so-called criminal record..

it was more his style of play..and the fact really that he was basiclly riding for the Sixers as close to by himself as possible..

Also I think Sixer fans..just like in any other city with some questionable fan activity.....but basketball fans in general are different than football or baseball fans. By nature modern Basketball fans are more open-minded about the Black athlete because if they are nba fans..they are fans of a very very Black sport..lol.

so I think it's tough to compare how AI was viewed to how McNabb was viewed...and really if Philly fans chose TO over mcnabb that was not a case of picking a criminal over an upstanding guy because TO is no criminal..he was just a raging A-hole...

and I dunked that thing with Chitlins in the hall way in Cold Buffalo back in the day and I loved the Doc, however he ain't seeing no Lebron James, Michael Jordan, Shaq or Kobe Bryant, however DOc was badd.

turkey i got the ABA books and Bootleg videos. I grew up on Bob Mcadoo when he played in Buffalo.

Dr J in the ABA era now that is a whole different story just like David Thompson, however i've seen cats do things as time went by.

I loved the DOC and always will, however Bron is Better so live with it turkey

Magic and Bird carried that league. Doc is a cool rebel when you think about it, he went against the grain had his own space jam movie.

i've never said a bad word about Doc and never would.

He was one of my favorite players growing up.

I'm about giving the man his due without name checking everybody and their mama...

Doc put in work...And he gets underrated way too much by folks like yourself...

I'm a Bulls fan...And I know how mammoth the cult of celebrity/greatness can be (M. Jordan)...But u don't see me bringing dude up at every turn...

Doc was a innovator who paved the way for that modern era...I'm not saying anything groundbreaking or new...

Just giving the man his due without all that BUT bullshit...

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

so you need to shut up and stop trying to start something that ain't there. you ain't saying nothing i already didn't know turkey.

I watched Doc, I watch tiny, I watched Iceman, I watched Bob Mcadoo turkey.

i was a kid when the Now LA Clippers were the Buffalo Braves, you ain't saying nothing. Doc was an incredible creative talent.

He was the baddest player in the ABA then you had Moses Malone who i saw as a kid, you had David Thompson.

you are a wack one trick pony riding jive turkey.

i could tell you things on Doc and Philly was that far from B Lo.

i saw his creativity and his drive.

I just think it would be cool for dude to get the props he deserves as a true innovator....

i love Doc Man, I watched him play and dug what he was about.

Doc was a Brother with Class and had a larger than Life vibe and yet he was a Humble Brother.

if you have ever read some of my posts on Doc and the Sixers I always say that those 83 sixers are the best one season team that I have ever seen, in the post season.

30 years ago Doc, Moses, Toney,Bobby Jones, and them sixers still left me in Awe.

the Lakers of 01 are 2nd in terms of a one Post season run, but them 83 sixers man that was the team that ran rough shot in the post season back in the day

and as I have said a time or so before and it might sound cold, however i'm a little surprised they green lighted this project because let the NBA tell it basketball are started with Magic and Bird 79-now and the way they put there trademark all over it.

if the NBA wasn't about politicing and marketing the image a certain way they would do specials on so many others from that era.

the fact they had that footage on Magic and Zeke talking about DOC like that from back in the day tells you how they control so much.

The rise of Pro Basketball as a popular American sport is really an incredible story, and Doc is a central figure in all of that. He brought a flair and an excitement to the game increased the entertainment value of the game....

Love the ABA footage.... there were some solid Basketball players in that league...and some great teams...the Pacers....Nuggets..and Doc's Nets....

the 76/77 series against the Blazers has always intrigued me...I remember seeing it vaugely, but over the years..really appreciated the match up. You had a Sixer team that was basiclly stacked...a Playstation team really..... But it goes to show you that just because you have 5 or 6 great players assembled...doesn't mean you're going to beat a team..that plays better as a team..

interesting comment about the Dawkins - Lucas fight being the turning point in that series...the Sixers won the first 2 games..but during game 2 the fight happens...and the Blazers win the next 4 games....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3e3C-LQWF2s

lol..well upon looking at the video..maybe the dissention that the Sixers had after tht fight was because Darryl's simple ass punched Doug Collins while trying to dirty mack Bob Gross.....but then Mo Lucas hit Dawkins with the back of the head dope fiend special...lol.

to Portland. the sixers got caught up watching DOC and didn't play team ball and it cost them.

the Blazers smoothered them and just got physical. Maurice Lucas was known for fighting you for the heck of it.

oh yeah Man the ABA was the truth and Doc was its Greatest Player period.

as a Buffalo Braves fan we got Bad News Marvin Barnes and he was something else except when he went crazy.

George Mcnnis was a beat back then.

the NBA hated them cats and say what you will i still think the NBA has kept a attitude about alot of the cats who went there.

because the NBA was a racist branch and they were scared of promoting the game.

man we came up on the tape delay era, i happen to catch the blazers and Sixers on CBS late night back in the day.

Dr Jack Ramsey left the Buffalo Braves and won in Portland and I never forgot that.

funny thing about Maurice Lucas I use to think he was the Brother in the doobie Brothers. i got them mixed up as a kid.

the blazers couldn't keep up with them, however once they got physical with them it slowed the sixers way down.

and I liked Darryl Dawkins however he was never that dude in the glass and you saw what Moses did some years later.

same thing with Caldwell Jones. Moses took them to a whole different level.

You had them kind of glossing over the fact that roughly HALF the NBA all-stars in the merger year had been in the ABA the year before. It was a stars' league. To say Doc was the only thing to look at in that dunk contest, man, that sold David Thompson short to me, not to mention all the great stars of the ABA the way they portrayed the league overall. It had some bush league elements, but that wasn't the players' fault and it surely was not a one-man show.

The doc overall was decent, but the footage was great and the way they concluded made me a little misty-eyed. Just based on that I feel indebted to the people responsible for this.

the Vince Carter of his time except other things short changed where he could have truly gone.

i know a few cats who think David Thompson won that dunk contest and will debate you on it.

things got glossed over for tv.

they weren't gonna talk the Nets beating them in the best 2 out of 3 back in 84 either.

they had more than their share of great NBA players..hall of fame playrs..and great teams..

and that style of play coming to the nba basiclly saved the NBA in the big picutre...it wasn't just the personality..but it was the style of play.....

and the buddy Cop era of Magic and Bird romanticize things as i remember it.

they used the ABA and took the best players however only DOC and Moses got with teams where they could do well.

Artis Gilmore with the bulls weren't a real threat.

Dan Issel out in Denver which had a scary team of Offense, however they never quite got to the next level.

George Gervin was stuck in San Antonio. they had some nice runs, however never a real threat. Billy Paultz the whooper did well in the ABA as well.

i remember back when Moses Malone slapped Paultz because the Whooper got physical with Mo.

In response to Reply # 0

First off, to hear the most competitive person on earth, Michael Jordan, say that even if he never won a title, he'd like most to remember with the esteem and reverence that the Doc was, wow, that was outright moving.

Then I had to say I lost it seeing him yam it one more time. The whole time, I thought about all the grand highlights, the shit that makes you say WOW every time, the stuff that CANNOT get old in a world where greatness constantly battles overexposure. Now, with that ending, we have ANOTHER great one all these years after everyone seemed convince we'd never have another.

That was special. Really special.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

It was a beautiful thing. Personally I was very young when the Doc retired, it was one of my earliest sports memories. I started obsessing over his highlights not long after that. Ageless stuff, in a way that I really can't compare to anything else. I'd sooner get sick of Hendrix's guitar than the Doc's dunks.

and in 87 it was sad for him to leave. he was one of those cats you just could relate to. when a Great player leaves usually we miss there domiance and greatness, however do we miss there Greatness and Personality and DOC was one of those rare few.

the only other players that i felt that from was Barry Sanders when he retired and Mike Schmidt.

i can tell you doc LEFT so many moements and memmorys and he was cool. he also was a victim of timing because had he came out in the 80's,90's,00's 10's oh Lawd he would be three times as huge and articulate and down to earth with it.

he was a educated articulate Brother and yet street and could roll with the Hood and yet also could do the cocktail with hollywood.

LeBron's entire career up to last season was looked at as him choking in the big time...him not coming thru in the finals or the playoffs....He was a regular season G......

He chose to go to a big 3 situation so that he could get some help in crunch time...so it wouldn't be all on him....because the pressure of CHOKING when it counts was starting to weigh on him...

because he took that bum team in cleveland to the finals and what options did he have there?

two years ago against the Mavericks he was playing to not step on D Wade's toes and he ended up taking the brunt of the blame.

however since then he got a Chip, Finals MVP, and we ain't even going to talk about 4 Regular Season MVP's and now his 4th trip to the show all before the age of 30 gold medal, all star.

if that is choking then i'll gag now. Hate all you want Bron is a Winner period.

and acting like Kobe didn't pull Nash in and Dwight in to win a Chip this past year?

or Jordan and Pippen turning down Rodman during that last 3 peat.

unless its those Pistons both eras, Rockets or Dirk and the Mav's then 8 times out of ten you have needed strong side pieces.

and that's just a fact. Peep his playoff stats when Dwight and them mashed on the Cavs. There were playoff games where he was barely shooting n the 2nd half....even in the finals 2 years ago..

that's very un-G like... He figured how to get in where he fit in last year...but that was the 1st time...

a real post season G makes that shit happen each and every year...they don't shrink in the spotlight.

He had a bad Finals series, OK, sure, that Dallas deserves plenty of credit for, also. I love how people cyse that endlessly, yet forget that the Mavericks sodomized, I mean, swept the "Will to Win" and his boys in four very painful games that same season.

LeBron is a big game performer. You want LeBron on your team. Always.

the series against the Magic ended a season where Cleveland had the best record in the NBA....the series against Dallas 2 years ago was the culmination of Bron joining the big 3 and again having the nba's best record...

those are the 2 series where he faded....

oh and his last season at Cleveland..... they again had the best record in the NBA before losing the boston in the semis...

I'm just sayin.....lol. when it's time to cop pleas for LeBron, he had the worst supporting cast ever.....Yet....THEY HAD THE BEST REGULAR SEASON RECORD IN THE NBA.....

all 3 of those series saw LeBron NOT taking charge...NOT taking the games over when his teams were being eliminted...lots of 3s being chunked up...NOT going to the basket....

since this is supposed to be aboug Doc...compare that game 6 of the Portland series whre Doc attempted to single handledly willl his team to victory with an incredible game...

where is Bron's incredible performace during any of the deciding games in those 3 series????

My initial response was to Maxx saying LeBron never choked.....that is just patently untrue...he was KNOWN to choke..particularly in those 3 playoff series...before he won the title last year...

I'm not bringing up old shit..I'm just making sure we keep it factual.

I mean when you have Moses....Cheeks....toney....Bobby Jones....

that's 4 very above average defenders..... which means more breaks...more playing with the lead.... that took a lot of pressuer off of Doc, and allowed him to be more free on offense...

when they talk about Gene Shue selecting George McInnis to shoot the last shot over Doc.... I mean that was obviously a mistake...especially since their season was on the line.... But when you look at Gene Shue...dude is like 80 games under .500 over his career as a coach... not exactly stellar.... the other thing you notice about that Sixer team...out of their top players..

Henry Bibby
Doug Collins
World Free
Darryl Dawkins
Dr. J
Caldwell Jones

only 3 of those guys shot over %50 from the field that season. folks would assume 2 would probably be Doc and McGinnis...but it was actually Doug Collins, Caldwell Jones, and Darryl Dawkins(who only played 59 games that season in his 2nd year out of high school)

suprisingly... George McGinnis..who some think should be in the hall of fame...but he never shot over 50% in his career...has some huge seasons....scoring and rebounding..but wasn't a high percentage shooter...

that Sixer team was just playing too loose a style...had a Billy Cunningham coached that team..I think they would have finished off the Blazers...Gene Shue just didn't have the system or the strong personality to deal with a team with that many stars and personalities....

First off, McGinnis was a huge force in his own right. The play worked, he got open for a shot he generally hit automatically but just left it a little short. Doc was right at the rim for a tip-in and it eluded him slightly. Those are the breaks. How many big plays have come down to a tough bounce of a basketball, a puck on edge, etc? Tons. Even if they hit there, there are no guarantees about the outcome of the series changing.

I'd assume it was all their bigger guys, Jones, Dawkins and possibly McGinnis. Collins was a helluva player. In today's NBA, they probably would have called a pick n roll with him and Doc or him and McGinnis.

Not surprisingly, McGinnis's departure from Philadelphia was omitted completely in last night's presentation. It had plenty to do with that shot and what it symbolized.

>suprisingly... George McGinnis..who some think should be in

He played a face-up game before it was fashionable, he wasn't the plodding power forward most of his contemporaries and predecessors were. I am a little surprised, but definitely not shocked.

Agreed completely. I don't want to take anything away from Portland, that is an awesome team. I loved reading about it in Jack Ramsay's book and hearing about it from Walton over the years. Truly a deep, cohesive TEAM. Imagine if they could have afforded Moses Malone, man, him and Bill in the same frontcourt!

But if Philly had better coaching, there is no way they drop four straight. That fight did change some momentum but you can recover from that, come on. It's been years since I watched the series, but I always thought they should have involved Collins more and could have been more effective taking away Walton's passing.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

in the back court, and brought Bibby off the bench. It was like Bibby started primarily because he was actually the only real point guard on the roster...but his nba game really wasn't that solid...Collins could have ran the point in a combo guard fashion..and if you get World to shoot just a little less..which would have been difficult..but not impossible..they would have had a pretty unstoppable team..

one thing I noticed in watching replay of those games was how many time Doc brought the ball up and initiated the "offense"....or what was supposed to be the offense... they just seemed to be running no plays...just 1 on 1 and get open type of stuff...

totally agreed on bibby, that was a major impression watching the series initially. they were too committed to a traditional point guard. like i said i think collins definitely should have had a bigger role in the series. lloyd free, i dunno, he was a guy you had to manage a little, things could get too loose even for that era with him. entertaining as hell though, and if he was hot, by god feed him the fucking ball lol.

lack of imagination from shue and lack of adjustment, too. again though, credit to the blazers, great mix of toughness, skill and unselfishness. to me, that portland team and also the title-winning warriors and their 12-man roster were much stronger examples of team play than even holzman's knicks.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

..it was fairly obvious that the "fundamentals vs street" narrative of the '77 finals was explosive.

would've been nice to see a bit more of the storyline of that season, its turmoil, culminating in the finals match up between philly & portland.

you could really look at that era the same way people look at the super bowls when it was AFL vs. NFL......

the sixers were more of an ABA style team....even byond the fact that some of their key players were former ABA greats.... just the style they used.

people talk about how on paper the Sixers were so much better...I think that's a bit overstatd because I mean Walton in his prime along with Mo Luc and Bob Gross Lionel Hollins.... and a great great coach...

the new style of play vs. the traditional style of play....

the traditional style won the day that season....but the league continued to evolve.... the Super Sonic teams that came and went to 2 finals in a row ..winning 1 was another move in a more modern direction....playing the Bullets those 2 seasons who were built in a more traditional manner with vets like Unseld, Hayes and Dandrige. then the Lakers ShowTime was the break out of a new day in the NBA....but still led by MVP Kareem...

Because it not only would again highlight Erving, it would definitely educate some people about the greats of the game that get overlooked like cats said in this post

I don't know if it's been done, but they have numerous (and necessary) docs about Curt Flood (underrated hero) and the fight for free agency, the NFL/AFL merger. This would be just as important (especially looking at cats like Spencer Haywood and the ABA's radical style of drafting players right out of high school)

they did their thing w/ that.

when jorn came on at the end, my youngest son (the one who is crazy about bball, 9th grader), was like, 'jordan took all of the on court stuff from doctor j, but not the off-court stuff'.

in other words, the class.

i was explaining when it started how its so hard to compare across eras, b/c you got to give props for those that did it first. there was an oscar robertson before magic, etc.

(and i know connie hawkins was doing the damn thing right before doc, and doc certainly took some shit from him), but the foul line dunk. the cuff dunk. the waving the ball around while palming it to get off all the ill finishes. jordan swagger jacked a LOT of shit from the doc. having the shoes.

but the classiness and non-assholishness he completely left alone.
peace & blessings,

x.
