i thought about you today
between my left foot and the sky
you crept in and orbited the outer realm of my thoughts

sometimes
between the coffee and the shower
or
the loc and the lips
you slide in
a faint yet persistent memory
causing me to

pause

i usually grab you with a swiftness
shoving you down deep into the darkness
where i place things i no longer want
or need to desire

it goes right away
fade
away
as nonchalantly as it came

but this time...
right now...

when the pause came
i was in the mirror
between the eyebrow and the scarf
i saved you from the darkness
and held you up to the light
examined why you still exist
in the pauses

all i could come up with was
because...
you showed me what it could be
how it could be
how it should be
then you vanished

i spent all that time
thinking you'd taken my heart with you
then spent more time trying to forget
but for some reason
the memory couldn't completely be erased

now i think i understand
why you still gently skim across
my heart and mind
like stones skipped
you created movement

now i can appreciate
what you brought
instead of cursing what you took away
i know the possibilities
my heart plumped full of expectation
my soul running over with gratitude
the pauses where you live now
are just small reminders of how
extraordinary you were
and how amazing i am today.
