"A Spoken Word for the world, from a south asian perspective"

Video coming soon on www.pariandharvin.com

last night was the premiere of the "raaga lounge" at shakti's in santa monica..it was a beautiful night of music (sitar by aalok mehta, keys by amir efrat, dj ameet on the 1's and 2's and winds by dominic), guitar (shakti), and i tried to expand my personal artistry by reaching outside of comedy, and writing a spoken word poem...this was the poem, background beats were done by J Dilla

We shall always remember 1947

Just as we will all remember 9-11

Dispel the stereotype of 7-11

As we slowly rise as sisters and brethren

Spread the message and give everyone a glimpse of

Equality, Humanity, and overall Ahimsa

In a time where we depend on the looks of fair and lovely

We must not care of complexion but bleed diversity

Bleed diversity through our veins and spread to others like infection

That’s the only way we can bring the low to resurrection

War and violence can sometimes get to me

But in those times I like to think of Gandhi ji,

Mother Theresa, Mandela and the Dalai Lama,

And the list continues, insert all the commas,

Martin Luther King, and Malcolm X,

Look past the lines of Race, Religion, and Sex

Why must we make life so complex?

Creating walls of exocentricity in the universal apartment complex,

Be citizens of the world, for knowledge is power,

For an idle mind is a devils workshop to devour,

One person cannot do everything, but everyone can do one thing

Keep your head up, look at your neighbors and grin,

No need to lay back, anxious with chagrin,

Say hi to a stranger, there is no danger,

Whether they believe in Guru Nanak, Allah, or Jesus in a manger

Let us all create a universal humanity constitution

Raise your hands in peace, and say “viva la revolution”

Yo I was REALLY feelin this.. especially this line-

"Why must we make life so complex?

Creating walls of exocentricity in the universal apartment complex,"

that line really struck a chord with me, just the way you stated what seems to me to be so obvious but is so hard to grasp for so many others.

This piece had me thinking of an ancient Middle Eastern university.. They had the right idea 2000 years ago and we can't get it right now, what kinda progress is that?

Much love and I'm feelin' this piece..
