"Heretic (Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, 2024)"

Saw this shit Wednesday night.

Really enjoyed it until the first mystery woman shows up.

This movie thinks its smarter than it really is. The theological showdown was more entertaining than when the horror started to kick in once the two girls enter the first chamber.

With that said, evil Hugh Grant is my favorite Hugh Grant is my favorite Hugh Grant. My man is on a fucking tear right now. Giving A+ performance after A+ performance.

Rising scream queen Sophie Thatcher gives another great performance, but holy shit Chloe East is in a star-making role here.

Shoutout to Chung Chung-hoon. Very rarely am I disappointed with his photography.

This trailer is better than the movie and gives a lot away (just a warning): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9i2vmFhSSY

Shoutout to A24 and Alamo Drafthouse for the invite, the smell-o-rama experience with blueberry pie scent, the free blueberry pie, and the blueberry pie scented candle. Fun Q&A with Hugh Grant afterwards.

on the surface it looks like "famous genial star turns EVIL", and well yeah, it is that, but the theological back-and-forth is a much more interesting premise than what is pushed in most horror movies.

I enjoyed it even after the first mystery woman appears; it kind of goes into more traditional horror mode for a bit but the themes and dialogue stay snappy throughout the second half.

Grant, Thatcher and East are all fantastic and the three of them worked great together.

What if this wasn't a horror movie? Like I bet there was an alt ending shot that would have had the crowd cheering.

It makes me think about the Alt ending of Get Out that ends in a jail scene and I know if they went with that ending that movie wouldn't have been as big as it was.

There was a similar way this could have ended that could have left us cheering, instead it ended well, like a horror movie leaving me feeling meh and feeling like I just watched something slightly misogynistic.

Of course my proposed ending turns it from a horror movie to a thriller but yeah.
