"Anora (Sean Baker, 2024)"

First Sean Baker film I love.

Mikey Madison is just as good as you've heard.

This film is equal parts hilarious and heartbreaking.

I went into this blind other than the hype and I would suggest the same.

between the first half and second half. opening side is an absolute assault on the senses, never relenting, then the pace changes up completely. the second half is a lot funnier than I imagined; almost Uncut Gems-esque. both work extremely well (although as usual, probably 15 minutes too long).

yes, Madison is amazing -- these types of roles get a lot of attention for the unabashed sexuality, but her performance is a lot deeper than that. but I also really dug Eydelshteyn as Ivan, whose magnetic chaos would be hard for most people to nail down.

I've only seen The Florida Project (which I also enjoyed) but this one was grander and better. Baker has a real touch for letting emotions and scenes breathe. you are watching people being people, not just actors speaking dialogue that gets to the next scene.

And SO funny. Almost felt like a Three Stooges film in some places. Actual hysterics at some of these scenes.

LOTS of heart. The final 5 minutes is pretty damn heartbreaking.

Really great.

the mid-movie scene in the lake house is crazily well-orchestrated. the naturalistic choreography (?) is so good.

perfect ending. best part of the film amd it stays with you long past the end.

Best Director
Best Actress
Best Original Screenplay

really loved this film but definitely surprised it dominated the Oscars (not in regards to the quality of film but based on the voters).
