"The Holdovers (Alexander Payne, 2023)"

Was really blown away by this. The best Alexander Payne movie to date imo. Funny, moving. Great script, great cast, great looking movie. Strongly encourage anyone reading this to seek it out and see it on a big screen.

And then AMC had a screening with a Q& A with Payne after, so I saw it again the other day. According to Payne, they found Dominic Sessa at the school they were filming at and he had never been in front of a camera before. Very surprising. Him, Giamatti and Randolph are all fantastic. Hope they get some awards season love this year.

Also, anyone who loves the look of 70’s movies is gonna enjoy this.

*Sort of a spoiler*

I like that they didn’t tie up every loose end. There’s a version of this movie where Paul quits drinking and Angus falls in love, etc. I liked that this followed a moment in time for these 3 characters and we know they’re all gonna continue to have ups and downs. It’s a feel good story, but it doesn’t try to “happily ever after” any of them.

and i don't see why she won the oscar over other nominees. I think this film was overhyped because of the director and Giamotti (who was very excellent, as always)

My buddy was an extra in the bar scene, and we've both served Payne many drinks over the years here so that'll always be a fun bit of frame-scanning for us.

I loved how much of a throwback it felt, from the initial trailer to the ending.

But I can't get behind placing this above Election or Nebraska. I know the latter is likely pretty weighted by my living here, but the former is such a good post-Cohen farce, probably the best of the dozens of them.

Suppose I'd follow an argument that was rooted in how much less cynical Holdovers is, but I liked it for what it was, nothing more.

Can't believe this is his first film and how they found him.

Other than that, I don't think I got much out of the film that I didn't get from the Trailer. It's mostly what I thought it would be (which isn't a total diss).
