"So I jumped into one of those "10 Most Disturbing Films" lists"
Shit. Some stuff you just cant unsee
I watched 8 out of the 10. My homeboy thats watching them too told me the two i didnt see were trash, so I avoided.
The list goes:
1-A Serbian Film 2-Salo (120 Days of Sodom) 3-The Bunny Game 4-Cannibal Holocaust* 5-Africa Addio* 6-Antichrist 7-Grotesque 8-Nekromantic 9-Men Behind the Sun 10-Martyrs
*did not watch-yet
I'd seen "Antichrist" years ago and remember being bugged out about it, but no way should it be higher than "Martyrs" or "Grotesque".
Grotesque made me take a break for about a week. Just extremely graphic torture pron
"Men Behind the Sun" has NO business being on this list. The most disturbing thing about that movie was the scene with the rats. Im deathly afraid of rats.
"Martyrs" shouldve been higher. The absolute meanest movie I've ever seen
"Salo" and "A Serbian Film" I guess could be interchangeable, but the fact that Salo was just so fucking constant makes it the absolute worst shit I've ever seen. "A Serbian Film" mos def aint no punk, but like my homegirl said,"Salo" is a fucking assault. No idea how anybody read the script and said "yeah man, I'm down, sign me up".
These jawns are all fucked up in their own ways, especially "Nekromantic". I'm surprised i made it through the ones I did, but uhh..I do not recommend any of these to anybody. Except maybe "Men Behind the Sun". That was like a bad Godzilla movie with no Godzilla.
Theyre all "out there" if you know where to look. Martyrs is actually on Amazon Prime

We did a whole Pasolini section for a course I took. We did a bunch of his films over the course of a month and a half. We get to Arabian Nights and the whole class was disgusted. He told us to then prepare ourselves for Salo the following week. He wasn't kidding.
7. "But isn't the film trash?" In response to Reply # 6
Meaning, do you think or did Hirsch try to argue, that there is some artistic value to the work? Or is the point just to "challenge" and gross you out?
I've always hated edgy for edgy sake. I also hate stuff that poses to be deep/artsy when its just, IDK, shockvalue.
IDK, I think a lot of 70s stuff in art, especially in film, took advantage of the disorientation caused by the 60s and was posing to be deep when it really wasn't all that deep.

>1-A Serbian Film
reading the wikipedia synopsis of this when everyone first talked about it was more than enough for me.
>2-Salo (120 Days of Sodom) >4-Cannibal Holocaust* >8-Nekromantic
rented these at the local video store in college. salo i thought was stupid. i understand this, like ASF, had a POV. this was where i started with pasolini and where i left off for many years. nekromantic was dumb as well but had no such point, from what i remember. CH i legit liked even though i feel guilty about the poor turtle. it's a sleazy film, no sugarcoating it.
>6-Antichrist
definitely disturbing, and i'm relieved a bit to see it ranked on this list.
>10-Martyrs
nothing's convinced me to see this. i watched salo because it was both notorious and had a legendary director. CH is legendary and influential, for the worse. nekromantic was schlock, the type that video store had plenty of for date night. (we also rented "2 psychos in love," and the store clerk got irritated with me: "it's 'psychos in love.'")
3. "These movies are never GREAT." In response to Reply # 0
Like, Ichi the Killer, Battle Royale, Oldboy, Irreversible, etc - all the movies that are on these lists over the years are mostly all about their shock value above everything else. Sometimes, the movies are pretty good - but they're NEVER great films.
It's one of those "Oh you HAVE to see ____" conversations in film school.
9. "It's like, you can never mention these movies as a convo starter" In response to Reply # 3
They're not even good, let alone great. Messed around and told my homie what site I watched one of these on and he fucked around and went deep into the page and saw some other shit that after he described it I'm convinced the devil has his own movie studio.
I'm going back to watching "so bad theyre good" movies...smh
13. "Yeah....honestly, OldBoy was an unfair example." In response to Reply # 11
It's a good movie. It's also not as hyper-violent as some of these others. Violent, sure. But more like Quentin Tarantino level than some of these other disturbing ass movies.

I think Martyrs is actually brilliant, in a lot of ways, but maaaaan it is a ROUGH watch. Especially the last part. It's on my list of best horror films ever, and I don't even like horror like that
Salo is one of those films that made me realize auteurs/directors are kind of nuts. I get the critique dude was making, but I couldn't imagine *making* that film. Like rehearsing and scripting and filming and editing THAT?? Pasolini was brilliant, but he was on one with this one
When I describe what it's about I get right up til those people show up and I tell folk "and I really dont want to ruin it for you."
That shit was tough to get through.
Re:Salo-yeah, everybody involved with that movie really needed to be examined. Can't imagine what that set was like. *************************************
