There's very little in common, apart from some basic elements.
spoilerish
There's a fun buddy film in here, somewhere, had they just created a new IP without the baggage of sharing a name with a bonafide classic. It feels like they paid for the whole thing just to do the throwback dance.
They did a modern variant of the Full Force bullies, which was mildly funny, but in no way does it invoke similar laughter or quotability.
I was in from the trailer, but it fell very flat for me. I laughed fairly often, but it was hard to care about anyone or anything that was happening.
I applaud the effort to tell a new story rather than a carbon copy, but they could have gone further with that and just created something new.
They make a sharp left turn that seems like it could have been fleshed out into an entirely different story about a bonkers night out with a certain celebrity, and that was the only thing that had me genuinely interested.
Part of what made the og work, was the ensemble nature of it. There's no Robin Harris type character here, none of the commentary with the police, no John Witherspoon like role, etc.
And I don't mean from the standpoint of needing a shot by shot recreation. But these were small pieces of the og that went a long way toward elevating it to the classic many of us love, and this one doesn't have any of those ingredients. The one where they did make an effort, the "Threats"- an analog to the Full Force bullies- were somewhat amusing, but mostly came across as tryhard IMO.
I'm all for remakes and reboots. But this one just didn't land for me.
