Granted, I was relatively young when the OG came out so I don't have a lot of attachment to the characters, but it felt like it was written to be "1999" good, not 2022 good. It seemed to lean heavy on nostalgia, and to me, some of the story just felt thrown together to check off certain boxes in the drama category (for example, what was the point of the guy Jordan met in Saint Pierre?). But everyone I talked to so far seems to have enjoyed it, so I guess me and my girl are in the minority.

for the core audience of the original. The original had a great cast of characters and it’s good just seeing those characters at different points of their lives.
I had two issues with the series - one is legitimate and one isn’t. The illegitimate issue was I thought it was over dramatic. Plot points are driven by some TERRIBLE decisions made by characters. This I realize now isn’t a legit issue though - my wife and I went back and re-watched the two movies after finishing the series. I’d forgotten how much the movies themselves are also dramatic because of stupid decisions being made, so that’s consistent.
My second issue though is that you can tell this started with a more simple idea, maybe for a third movie, that was then stretched out. So you end up with several plot points that aren’t needed at all because they go nowhere. Not only that, but there are so many separate plot points that the characters aren’t really together very much - and that was the BEST thing about the original movie. For example Harper is the main character of this universe and he was literally gone for two episodes in the middle of the season with no explanation other than being busy, only showing up as a profile pic on text messages. My wife said he must have had a filming conflict or something. It’s just weird. I’d say maybe they wanted us to feel the same way his wife did about him being gone but that’s giving them too much credit.
The separate plot points and dramatic story turns end up making this feel like a soap opera. Again - great to see these characters again, but I feel pretty meh on the show.
