"Avatar (4K UHD high frame rate 3D re-release) (James Cameron, 2022)"

This remastered version felt like I was watching for the first time. The 3D in this remastered was unbelievable. I hated it back in 2009, now I'm in the Team Avatar camp.

Shit looked like a completely different movie.

Saw it with some people at an IMAX with single Laser projection cause the dual Laser giant screens can't project high frame rate. Cameron knows that High Frame Rate only looks good during action scenes where shit is moving. Otherwise most of this is in regular 24 frames per second.

And the scene from the new one?!

SSSSHHHHHHEEEEIIIIIITTTTT.

Now I see why he waited 13 years.

Regular 3D showings, Dolby Cinema, and single Laser IMAXs are where you can find the high frame rate.

Went to a single Laser IMAX instead of the giant 8 story joint that has dual Laser projection.

But HFR in 2K or 4k? Looks like 2k in the majority or even all of theaters.

Disney doesn't provide a list yet, and I can't find the DCP spec document online.

This thread has some limited details:

Some very these are only showing it at 2K in HFR and the IMAX theaters are not in HDR, unless they’re very very new.

But I’m not a projectionist I don’t have access to the details, call the theater just to be sure

All High Frame Rate versions are in 4K.

Also, you seem to love your TV. So I'm curious are you even considering venturing out to a theater to see this?

I don't think I am, but I would if not for COVID. I still haven't seen a HFR movie in the theater-- Gemini Man on 4K Blu-ray is the only one I've seen at home.

IMAX film is capable of 16K

Digital IMAX Xenon projection is 2K (which is why they're trying to slowly phase out those projecters).

I find it frustrating that, on AMC/Fandango apps, it doesn't say "High Frame Rate" by the movie times like it did when Hobbit and other things came out.

I'm basically just taking a shot in the dark and hoping I get it since it's not being clearly advertised on the ticketing apps.

It think the IMAX sound is slightly different to but if you want the best picture this is probably your best bet.

Disney has not done a good job advertising this.

I'll go anywhere in LA, really. I know there's a just Dolby 3D in Burbank, I can try to get there later this week. Really just wondering of my IMAX options if there's variance or not.

I'm gonna see it at Century City this afternoon, already took my shrooms, lol. So I guess I'll find out if I've got real high frame rate soon enough. If not, I'll probably plunk down to see it again later this week.

If I remember correctly (and maybe bwood can correct me if I'm wrong), they started filming the sequels years later, but they *are* filming the sequels back to back. The first movie was its own thing at the time, in terms of the actual shoot itself.

2 is obviously done. 3 is getting close to the finish line. Just started shooting 4. 5 will probably be dependent on 2's success. But seeing how well the re-release did, I think they're going to be fine (especially if what I'm hearing is true that 2 is INFINITLY better as a movie).

I'm sure it looks fantastic (couldn't knock any of the visuals the first go round) but there's less reason for me to see this than the Snyder Cut. Still can't believe Cameron sold all those 3D TVs off this movie though....

As for the new one? I'd give it a shot once the hype dies down the first week or so. Why not...

So it's Dances With Wolves-- which was nominated for 12 Oscars, including Best Picture-- with revolutionary technology and visuals on top of that? That sounds like a fucking great movie! lol

Like, if you hate Dances With Wolves or stories like that, then that's one thing, right? But then the problem isn't "Avatar's story is like this movie's story." The problem is "I think this particular story sucks," lol. Which is fine! But then it's not a "lack of originality" that's your problem, it's your personal taste for that particular story. Because the "hero ends up embedding himself with people he thought were his enemy and found out he was on the wrong side" is a tale as old as time going back to the ancient Greeks and beyond. And people keep using that story because, well, if it's executed well, it tends to really work.

The meme that "Avatar is just a rip-off" just dismisses such a massive, massive chunk of what made Avatar the huge success with critics, people in the film industry, and general audiences that it was. It's like saying "Star Wars is just a prettier The Hidden Fortress." Like, okay, but they also created other planets and races of aliens and shit, lol. The world-building in Avatar is absolutely bonkers. And he used an archetypal hero journey to give us an entry point into that insane new world. I think, from a writing perspective, that makes perfect sense.

I'm not here to convince anyone who didn't like Avatar that they should, obviously. Just been seeing this line re-emerging recently, and I... just don't get this particular line as a knock against Avatar, lol.

Maybe after a decade of mediocre superhero shit and a lot of real world nonsense that gets worse by each passing day, I found the ecological and racism themes much better only because of how relevant it has gotten since 2009. Also, the new render on effects is breathtaking. The nuances in the mo-cap performances stand out more and I see that the performances from the live-action actors Also help sell the story. LOVE the world building more this time out as well.

It's basically DUNE for kids.

The more everything becomes shoddy green screen, muddy made-for-streaming colors and flat visuals, and so exceptionally pre-existing IP-driven, when I see annnnnnything that's its own thing from the 1990s and 2000s, I tend to bump it up a good half star more than I probably would have at the time, lmao.

I watched Richard Donner's Conspiracy Theory yesterday, and it had, like, real helicopters in a city, and real crowd scenes on real streets and shit. Like, the human eye can tell the difference end of the day.

Yes, no idea's original. The saviour from another culture trope is centuries old, and will continue for centuries still. But there was incessant hype over this movie that, besides the visuals, probably wasn't warranted, so there was bound to be some backlash. When there are stories of people wishing they could die and live in that world, you gotta have someone say pump your brakes. As mentioned, if the trope is executed well the movie will do well. I'm in the group that thinks this version of Ferngully was average at best, and nowhere near the level of praise it gets at worst.

But hey. If you (maybe the royal 'you') like it, I love it. Not about to try and change anybody's view on this movie. I do feel a little bad at people that invested in those 3DTVs though.
