So it's Dances With Wolves-- which was nominated for 12 Oscars, including Best Picture-- with revolutionary technology and visuals on top of that? That sounds like a fucking great movie! lol
Like, if you hate Dances With Wolves or stories like that, then that's one thing, right? But then the problem isn't "Avatar's story is like this movie's story." The problem is "I think this particular story sucks," lol. Which is fine! But then it's not a "lack of originality" that's your problem, it's your personal taste for that particular story. Because the "hero ends up embedding himself with people he thought were his enemy and found out he was on the wrong side" is a tale as old as time going back to the ancient Greeks and beyond. And people keep using that story because, well, if it's executed well, it tends to really work.
The meme that "Avatar is just a rip-off" just dismisses such a massive, massive chunk of what made Avatar the huge success with critics, people in the film industry, and general audiences that it was. It's like saying "Star Wars is just a prettier The Hidden Fortress." Like, okay, but they also created other planets and races of aliens and shit, lol. The world-building in Avatar is absolutely bonkers. And he used an archetypal hero journey to give us an entry point into that insane new world. I think, from a writing perspective, that makes perfect sense.
I'm not here to convince anyone who didn't like Avatar that they should, obviously. Just been seeing this line re-emerging recently, and I... just don't get this particular line as a knock against Avatar, lol.
